Can we practice the art of surrender before the first dose?Today on the show Robin Arnott and Dr. Sandeep Prakash explain how SoundSelf evolved from a VR curiosity into a clinically oriented tool that uses sound and light feedback to induce the unitary states therapists aim for in medicine sessions. We unpack the science of voice-activated biofeedback, ways to weave SoundSelf into preparation and integration protocols, and the larger promise of digital therapeutics for scalable, whole-person care.SoundSelf is a voice-guided, audio-visual platform that primes the nervous system for psychedelic-level surrender and supports post-session integration. Robin Arnott is the former CEO of Andromeda Entertainment, and author of The Technodelic Manifesto. On this episode of the Psychedelic Invest Podcast, host Bruce Eckfeldt is joined by Robin Arnott and Sandeep Prakash of SoundSelf. SoundSelf SoundSelf knows that therapists and healers are more than just one-size-fits-all practitioners of a system—they're highly empathetic and creative souls who yearn to better their patients and community. SoundSelf believes these people should have access to the best tools that enhance their practice in a way that is not only safe and effective, but also rewarding and even fun. Their state-of-the-art tools use techniques of ancient origins. They are spiritual technologies, validated by science, and delivered in a compassionate setting by you. Robin Arnott Robin Arnott is the founder and CEO of SoundSelf, a digital therapeutic supporting life and mind transformation. Before founding SoundSelf, Robin was the CEO of Andromeda Entertainment, where he oversaw the distribution of VR experiences that provide psychological fulfillment through embodiment and meditation. A longstanding public speaker, Robin teaches and advocates for game design principles that facilitate psychological transformation by engaging the body. His work and ideas are featured in Netflix's "Screenland" docu-series, and the documentary "Game Loading: Rise of the Indies". He has spoken about technology as an awakening agent at the Game Developers' Conference, Wisdom 2.0, Transformative Technology Conference, The Science of Consciousness, and TEDx Linz. Sandeep Prakash Sandeep Prakash is a psychologist, educator, and researcher. My work draws on western psychology and indigenous systems of wellness, such as shamanism, yoga, Buddhism, and non-dual Vedanta philosophy. I completed training in research, depth psychology, eco-psychology, and psychological work with altered states of consciousness during my Master's and Doctoral degrees at the California Institute of Integral Studies. I have extensive experience facilitating transformative events, training, seminars, CE continuing education, graduate-level courses, on topics such as psychedelic integration, yoga psychology, neuropsychology of trauma, nature-based psychological practice, and transformative experience design in Virtual Reality. My doctoral dissertation research explored cutting-edge virtual reality, or VR, technology for psychological well-being. Using a novel collaborative study design, the research generated qualitative and quantitative data about the long-term use of a VR app-SoundSelf VR-- that induces altered states of consciousness akin to psychedelics, such as LSD or psilocybin. At SoundSelf, I lead research, medical affairs, and Digital Therapeutic design. I also assist with strategy, marketing, regulatory affairs, and general business processes of a fun, fast-paced, and industry-leading psychedelic health-tech startup.
The world of digital therapeutics is booming just as fast as psychedelic therapy. Today's guest, Lyle Maxson, is resolutely optimistic about the positive synthesis of the two. On the show, we discuss the science of Lyle's software SoundSelf, which uses voice to generate a hypnotic world of light, color, and sound. We review his business partner Robin Arnott's Technodelic Manifesto and ask the important question: Will technology replace therapists? We also cover data sovereignty, metric tracking, and finally the future of psychedelic medicine and digital therapeutics. With a start in immersive environments at festivals, Lyle Maxson is a pioneer of Transformative Entertainment. He is Chief Strategy Officer of Entheo Digital - a digital therapeutics company pursuing FDA clearance and the creation of a wellness technology marketplace at the intersection of psychedelic therapy and experiential medicine. He is also the co-founder of Andromeda Entertainment, a VR publisher bringing to market “Games for Good,” and GeniusX, a VR education platform. Robin Arnott (@videodreaming) is the Co-Founder of Andromeda Entertainment and SoundSelf, a VR experience that harmonizes patterns of colored lights and shapes to the sound of your voice. What we discuss with Robin:Philosophy of game design as it relates to our sense of self and the mind.Integrating spirituality into business with the holacratic organizational model.Envisioning a future that synthesizes individual and collective perspectives.Innate intelligence of biology and nature. The fractal relationship between personal and societal development.
Robin Arnott is an audio designer and game developer who developed Deep Sea, released in 2010, and SoundSelf. Both games focus mainly on audio, with Deep Sea being audio only and SoundSelf featuring audio accompanied by abstract visuals. He also did sound design for Antichamber.About SoundSelf: Use your voice to generate a hypnotic world of light, color, and sound. Now, more than ever, the stresses of daily life grind us down. A strong meditation practice helps us feel more at peace and ready to meet the world. But those very stresses make it difficult to form a practice. The constant pressure distracts the monkey brain, and we drift into anxiety instead of stillness. SoundSelf induces a meditative state. SoundSelf will gently lull you into meditation by engaging you in a centuries-old practice called "toning." You'll breathe deeply and exhale in long extended tones, SoundSelf will produce audio/video feedback to shift you into meditation. Relax and let go.https://soundself.com/https://www.enterandromeda.com/http://eastforest.org
Robin Arnott from Andromeda Entertainment thinks he might just have the "Trojan Horse" that'll get video gamers into meditation and mindfulness. It's called Soundself: A Technodelic, and it's virtual reality experience that some users have compared to the effects of taking psilocybin, the hallucinogenic ingredient found in some mushrooms. You can read a written version of this story here: Soundself: Video games meet virtual psychadelia - pixelsift.com.au This episode of Pixel Sift was reported by Jason Head, and produced by Gianni Di Giovanni.
This was actually recorded several months ago before COVID19 but it's probably more relevant now. You seriously should check out SoundSelf for your 2-month quarantine-style meditation retreat: https://www.soundself.com/
Not content with simple sound design and engineering, Robin Arnott wanted more from the games he made. Sound design, along with games that featured those design approaches, followed a specific template, and Robin wanted to try something different, and so a wonderful career blossomed from that moment. Robin Arnott, CEO of Andromeda Entertainment (enterandromeda.com), discusses his work with the next wave of gaming and the ever-expanding world of entertainment technologies. Andromeda Entertainment is the first publisher to serve the advancing interest in mindfulness and wellness with truly transformative content and amazing virtual entertainment experiences for users. Arnott talks about his background as an audio engineer and game designer. Through working in games in the entertainment technologies space, he came to truly understand how games capture our minds perhaps better than anything else. It's about practicing and being, and can really bring people into a specific environment. He talks about how games can play an important role in people's introspective journeys, hitting deep states of consciousness. With video games, we can package practices that are good for us, in a fun, engaging, deeply involved game environment. Arnott explains that video games can become addictive, but most games can actually exercise parts of your mind, thus the benefits are there. Arnott discusses how their games engage people on a somatic level, to move out of deeply held trauma, to approach self-actualization. As we learn, he states, we can really take advantage of this form in a positive way, elevating the gaming experience. Arnott talks about some of the games that are coming out soon, and their mental and physical benefits. Continuing, Arnott says they, as a company, are looking for original genius ideas; he is looking for creators who are engaged on a higher level. As a publisher, Arnott states that they often take on games that may be somewhat unusual, but offer transformative experiences. And Arnott discusses how game designers might draw from the mind/body connection to inspire their designs, to make a new kind of game for self-actualization and beyond.

I first met Robin Arnott, CEO of Andromeda Entertainment, at E3 many moons ago when he was showing an audio-based thriller game Deep Sea at the Indiecade booth. It was a true oddity -- a video game without video -- an immersive experience before we were throwing that term around as we now do. In the years since Robin and I have crossed paths on his home turf of Austin -- when I was working a story on indie games for NPR -- at GDC, and Indiecade. In my mind he's always been one of the "weird art kids" making games in the space beyond the horizon. So it was a shock when I was at an event months ago and learned that he had become the CEO of a start-up that was looking to redefine just what games could be. Robin? A CEO? Get ready for an adventure as we catch up, road trip style, from the heart of DTLA to the Hollywood Hills -- and from Austin's indie game scene to the philosophical frontier.
Full Interview with Robin Arnott, Founder and Designer of Sound Self Game.
Robin Arnott's first virtual reality game was a sense-depriving gas mask with a literal suffocation mechanic. Instead of the paralyzing terror of "Deep Sea," his new project "SoundSelf" aims to induce meditative bliss. Both games focus heavily on audio as the core experience. Creating games as we all know can be very challenging and time-consuming. Robin expresses his feelings and experience on his 6-year journey making SoundSelf. One key takeaway is to have a sense of why and purpose in order to maintain motivation.

Robin Arnott is an indie game designer and interactive artist. In this presentation from the 2014 Buddhist Geeks Conference, he speaks about applying game design to meditation. Robin first explains how a state of trance is central to both the experience of meditation and the experience of game play. He then shows how game mechanics might be utilized in meditation practice to support a trance, and how these ideas are already being explored in the video game industry.
