On this week's episode of our show, Captain Ingle and I set a course for the 24th century and the farthest reaches of the Federation. On this particular episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Captain Sisko, having grown tired of the constant casualty reports of the ongoing Dominion War, launches a desperate gamble to bring the Romulan Empire into the war on the side of our heroes to stop the enemy once and for all. But what will the price be? Join us as we go boldly!
Ever wanted to see TNG turn into a mindless action franchise? Yeah, neither did we, but here we are anyway. It's “Star Trek: Nemesis” on this very special episode of ST:TNGeez, Not Another Star Trek Podcast, and it's coming at you right about . . . NOW!The final frontier is reached at last as we enjoy this final “Next Generation” motion picture extravaganza! In an unexpected maneuver, the newly ascended praetor of the Romulan Empire requests a visit from the Enterprise E! Picard hightails it to the Romulan homeworld without the common courtesy of dropping off the newlywed Troi and Riker. What could be so pressing as to lead our classy captain to commit such a faux pas? How about a coup that places the mysterious Shinzon in the role of predator of the empire backed by his equally mysterious Reman “brothers”? (Are there any female Remans? If so, where are they?) The command crew beams down to Shinzon's goth palace for a chat, and as a welcome gift, Shinzon offers some of his blood. Sounds gross until Bev analyzes the blood to discover that Shinzon is a clone of Jean-Luc! (Which is still gross, but at least there's a point to it, kinda.)Meanwhile, the Enterprise just happens to stumble onto yet another Soong-type android scattered across a desert planet. Picard drags Worf and Data on a dune buggy ride to retrieve the bits and reassemble them into an android that looks just like Data. They deduce it's a prototype that just happens to be named . . . B-4. Seriously. That's its name. It has the brain of a Pakled and a jumpsuit to match. Seems they don't make clones the way they used to. But things kick into gear when Shinzon begins to implement his master plan involving the deadly Thalaron radiation! How is B-4 linked to Shinzon and his master plan? What is his master plan anyway? Why does he need Picard's blood so badly? Why is his suit so tight? (that has to chafe!) Do they not have dentists on Romulus? As the outlook for the powers of the Alpha and Beta quadrants grew increasingly grim, the Romulan Empire turned to drafting soldiers from their dirty little secret: The people of Romii, known to the rest of the galaxy as Remus. The Remen were at worst 2nd class citizens of the Empire and at worst slave labor, their population subjugated when then violent Vulcan pilgrims settled on a twin planet in the system. A planet that would become Romulus.
As our voyages continue, we arrive at the last Star Trek film to feature the cast of The Next Generation: Star Trek Nemesis. In this final adventure, a new ruler of the Romulan Empire desires to negotiate with the Federation. Captain Picard and the USS Enterprise travel to Romulus, only to discover that the new ruler of the Empire is a clone of Picard himself! Today we are joined by our good friend and fellow Trekkie Justin Toner. Join us as we go boldly! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pageturnerstheywerenot/message
It's time to begin the procedure and say goodbye to the old era of Trek cinema as we come face-to-face with the last TNG film: "Star Trek: Nemesis"!Writer, podcaster, and Batman expert Chris Sims joins the show this week to talk about the much maligned though possibly misunderstood final film of the TNG era. When a vicious new faction comes to power in the Romulan Empire, Picard and his crew are sent to make an overture of détente to the new regime. When the faction's new leader is revealed to be a secret clone of Picard, Jen-Luc will be force to face a life that might have been...and one of his crew will be forced to make the ultimate sacrifice!Conventional Trek wisdom has always held that the odd-numbered films are bad and the even-numbered ones are good, and for some Trekkies that pattern was shattered by TNG's last film. It's hard to know exactly why the Next Generation as a cinematic brand had such a relatively short shelf life, but it wasn't for a lack of creativity on the part of the writers and directors of the series. Nemesis may have challenged audiences' ideas of what a typical Trek blockbuster looks and feels like, but it introduced a surprising depth and poignancy to the series that would continue to echo through Trek's 21st century revival. On this episode, we talk about the film's rocky production and cold reception, the value of an "episode film", Trek justifying itself in the current marketplace, choosing who you want to be, the standout casting in the Trek franchise, how a family gives a person strength and identity, and why Star Trek needs to have hope.We also discuss solving space problems with allegory, mourning pulp novel episode titles, the blog-to-podcast pipeline, (not) ranking "Cow Tools", Teeny Tom Hardy, Wars vs. Trek on TV, "units" of storytelling, Trek as the OG continuity nerd's refuge, boiling down the captains, Batman fighting a lion, and letting your ship designs cook a little!Hey, I didn't ask to be cloned!Follow Chris on Twitter and check out his other work and podcasts!http://www.twitter.com/theisbhttp://www.the-isb.com/Learn the story behind your favorite Trek episodes with BackTrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingToast us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/WVvCHVWqzfBuy us an Argo on Patreon and Ko-Fi!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodhttps://ko-fi.com/E1E01M2UASubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2
So the Enterprise is just tooling along when a sudden visitor from the Romulan Neutral Zone arrives. It's a Romulan scout ship with a Warbird in hot pursuit! The scout's passenger seeks asylum aboard the Enterprise. As Picard orders the scout ship enclosed in the Enterprise's shields, the Warbird shrugs and heads back into Romulan space. The passenger ends up being something as rare as a Ferengi with straight teeth: a Romulan defector! He claims to have vital information about a secret Romulan base that threatens the tenuous peace between the Romulan Empire and the Federation. Picard and company have to determine if the defector is telling the truth or if he's a spy leading the Enterprise into a trap. Will Data ever figure out what a metaphor is? Will . . . Will Troi ever get a chance to do her fucking job?

The Enterprise D is ordered to the Neutral Zone to investigate the disappearance of several outposts and to determine if they are the result of the Romulan Empire reasserting itself in the quadrant. The Romulans haven’t been heard from in over 50 years, so tension is high as the bridge crew tries to plan for whatever may come. Adding to the fun, Data and Worf discover three survivors on a derelict craft who were frozen cryogenically back in the 1980’s and shot out into space. Data brings the trio back to the Enterprise D, and they end up being underfoot while Picard and the crew prepare to get reacquainted with their old adversaries. Will the Enterprise be up to the task of meeting the Romulans? And what do those little stinkers want anyway? Will Data and Cryo-pal Sonny find any pit woofies aboard – And what the hell is a pit woofie? Will someone please get Whalen the 20th Century Expert up here?
Book Review “Star Trek: Picard - The Dark Veil.” This month starts production of season two of “Star Trek: Picard” - while it may be another year before we get a new episode, we are still getting new stories from this larger story setting. The trio engages “book club mode” to discuss the second PIC novel - “The Dark Veil” by James Swallow. This book is set on the U.S.S. Titan, with Captain William T. Riker in command. This story takes place approximately 14 years before the event of “Picard” season one, when the Romulan Empire is still facing the threat of the “star death” (supernova) and the Federation has banned synthetic life, following an attack on Mars. This story blends the storylines of Romulans, Tal'Shair, and some other shadowy organizations. We finally meet young Thad Troi-Riker and his linguistic talents, as well as the crew of the Titan. Let us know if you enjoyed this adventure as much as we did!

Positively Trek 84: Picard: The Dark VeilWith Special Guest: Author James Swallow! The year is 2386, and the United Federation of Planets has been dealt a serious blow: synthetic lifeforms have attacked the Utopia Plantia Shipyards at Mars, derailing a massive relief effort to save the Romulan people from an impending supernova. The Federation, reacting to this tragedy, has turned inward, halting relief efforts in the Romulan Empire and instituting a ban on research and development of synthetic lifeforms. All of this serves as the backdrop to the situation facing Captain Riker and the crew of the U.S.S. Titan as they respond to an urgent distress call from the Jazari, a species situated very near the Romulan Neutral Zone… In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Dan and Bruce welcome renowned author James Swallow to the show to discuss his latest novel, Star Trek: Picard: The Dark Veil. BackTrekking returns again to look back at the real-world inspirations of classic Trek episodes! It's tough to improve on Shakespeare. Sure, the guy's got a cultural monopoly going since he happened to write his plays in English, and America exports more culture than we do bullets. But you have to admit, the guy's pretty good. It would be the height of hubris then, you'd have to agree, to try and rewrite one of his most famous and beloved plays in an attempt to give it a more raw and modern take on power and politics. And an expanded role for Falstaff, 'natch. And yet, Australian actor and former thin person Joel Edgerton did exactly that for his Netflix "Henry V" adaptation, "The King". This contemporary revision of Shakespeare's mostly nakedly propagandistic play strips out the impassioned speeches, the racial tensions, and most of the poignancy of a treatise on the responsibilities of a head of state that still has something to teach modern audiences, 400 years after it was first performed on stage. Meanwhile, 1000 years after Henry and his men landed on the beaches of Normandy, Captain Jean-Luc Picard finds himself weighing the same responsibilities and consequences that Henry did on the night before Agincourt. A Romulan admiral has risked ex-communication and death to defect across the Neutral Zone in order to warn Starfleet that the Romulan Empire has established a secret beachhead in anticipation of an all-out invasion of the Federation. Should Picard strike first and expose the Romulan plot, saving billions? Or is he leading his crew that is sworn to follow him into a trap and an ignoble death? We're contemplating what makes a good king (or a good captain) this week, as we compare these two ruminations on war and rule. We also discuss "fixing" Shakespeare, drool acting, why Trek keeps going back to Shakespeare, the episode's unique premise, the unrealized potential of the Romulans, shouting=acting, and the Data ex Machina. We also talk about the double double-cross, pocket Klingons, Falstaff 3000, manic pixie dream fille, Jared Leto's the Dauphin, manipulators gonna manipulate, the Koala Krew, Gooey's got questions, Kal's got answers, and our all-time best Technological Exchange! We got swords, they got swords, all God's children got swords!Join us in the Just Enough Trope Discord!https://discord.gg/EAx5VGXTweet at the show or your hosts with your suggestions for future episodes!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkinghttp://www.twitter.com/ka1ibanhttp://www.twitter.com/gooeyfameCheck out the other shows on the Just Enough Trope network!http://www.justenoughtrope.comTheme: Disco Medusae Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Death in Winter. Following the film Star Trek Nemesis, novels in the Star Trek literary universe were given more of a free reign to play with the familiar characters and situations, creating what has been termed the "novelverse." Without any more televised or filmed adventures for the crew of the Enterprise-E on the horizon, authors could take the story in new and exciting directions. One of these directions involved the culmination of the "will they/won't they" romance of Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher, as well as a new source of turmoil for the Romulan Empire. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson discuss Death in Winter. We talk about Beverly's transfer off the Enterprise, the state of the Romulan Star Empire, an undercover mission into Romulan space, Worf and Geordi's role in the story, the love between Picard and Crusher, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings. Federation Exceptionalism. In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling are joined by Duncan Barrett, co-author of Star Trek: The Human Frontier, to discuss the concept of exceptionalism in Star Trek. Mike, Zachary, and Duncan consider various forms of exceptionalism, both here in the real world and in the Star Trek universe. Are humans exceptional lifeforms with unique properties and abilities compared to other life forms here on Earth? In the Star Trek universe, do humans have unique or exceptional abilities compared to members of various alien species? Is the Federation an exceptional political entity compared with neighboring political organizations such as the Romulan Empire or the Ferengi Alliance? How does Federation Exceptionalism compare and contrast with so-called American Exceptionalism? And is there a positive sense of exceptionalism that can avoid the pitfalls of superiority, cultural assimilation, colonialism, and hegemony while allowing for genuine progress toward Federation ideals of liberty, diplomacy, and self-determination? Nationalism. It is a commonly-held belief that humans in the 23rd and 24th century world of Star Trek have progressed beyond nationalism. The Federation, however, is only one of many intra-galactic nation states. The Federation, the Romulan Empire, the Klingon Empire, and the Cardassian Empire each has its own "national" symbols, colors, political structure, and cultural values. To what extent has the Federation helped humanity transcend the need for nationalism, and to what extent is it still bound by nationalism but on a larger, galactic scale? In this episode of Meta Treks: A Star Trek Philosophy Podcast, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling debate the role of nationalism in the Star Trek universe, asking the fundamental question, "Is nationalism something to be transcended or to be embraced within the idealism of Star Trek's vision of the future?" War in TNG.Just as in contemporary times, war can take many forms. Star Trek: The Next Generation did not feature a primary war akin to those stories featured in Deep Space Nine or Enterprise, however many enemies confronted Captain Picard and his crew. The Romulan Empire posed a continuing threat to the United Federation of Planets that stood on the brink of war ("The Defector"), the results of the off-screen Cardassian War became a source of many episodes ("The Wounded," "Chain of Command, Parts 1 and 2," "Journey's End," and "Preemptive Strike"), and the Borg presented a new form of warfare heretofore unknown to the 24th Century ("I, Borg" and "Descent, Parts 1 and 2"). Phillip, Daniel, and Darren explore whether there are modern parallels to the "post-Wolf 359" era of TNG, how its combat/conflict compares to other Trek series, and how the serious potential for galactic war was continuously tackled by the flagship U.S.S. Enterprise. The Battle of the Omarion Nebula. The build up to the Dominion War was a slow one, with hints about the Founders and skirmishes with the Jem'Hadar setting the stage. But it wasn't a one-sided affair. Fearful of the Dominion, the intelligence services of the Cardassian Union and the Romulan Empire—the Obsidian Order and the Tal Shiar—teamed up for a preemptive strike against the Founders' homeworld. It was a bold plan to annihilate the Changelings before they could invade the Alpha Quadrant. What they didn't know was that they were walking into a trap. In this episode of The Orb, hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss the first major battlefield engagement between the Dominion and the Alpha/Beta Powers, the state of cold war between the Dominion and the Federation, and the motivations on both sides of the conflict that led to the battle.
