Stadig flere opplever oppmerksomhetssvikt og problemer med en viljestyrt kontroll over kropp og sinn. Er det noe galt med hjernen, eller er det snakk om skranten «mental kondis»?Jeg er en forkjemper for å se på hjernen som en muskel. Sønnen min har akkurat lært seg å løse en Rubiks kube i en voldsom fart. Han har hatt med seg kuben overalt gjennom en hel sommeren, og nå løser han den på under 30 sekunder. Hvis man kunne se inn i hjernen hans før og etter all treningen, vil man se noen endringer i områder som har med vissospatial kognisjon å gjøre. Han har forandret hjernen sin ved å spesialisere seg på Rubiks kube. Datteren min er ikke like rask som broren, men hun er heller ikke like dedikert. Hun lærte seg å løse kuben fordi hun tror man blir smartere av det. Sønnen min gjorde det fordi det var gøy.Vi endrer hjernen vår hele tiden avhengig av hvordan vi bruker den. Men når vi sliter med eksempelvis hukommelse, tenker vi sjelden at vi er dårlig trent. Vi tror at hjernen vår har en skavank, er svak eller eventuelt syk og på vei til å degenereres mot en tilstand av kognitive svikt. Når vi sliter med å holde konsentrasjonen på en viktig oppgave, tenker vi helle rikke at vi har forsømt oppmerksomhetstrening og bør legge oss i selene for å holde tritt på skole, jobb eller på alle andre arenaer som stiller krav til et skarpt fokus. Det er heller ikke sikkert at vi reflekterer over sammenhengen mellom mobiltelefonens ustanselige jag og forstyrrelser, og hvordan det eventuelt korrumperer vår evnen til å holde fokus over lengre tid. Å holde et intenst fokus på noe som interesserer oss dypt og inderlig er som regel ganske lett, og her kan utfordringen være å zoome ut for å håndtere parallelle oppgaver i tillegg til det vi er oppslukt av. For mange mennesker i et moderne samfunn er det ikke alltid nærliggende å tenke at man er dårlig trent med henblikk på kunsten å forvalte egen oppmerksomhet. Man tenker heller ikke at man er under digitale mediers innflytelse, og at vår oppmerksomhet er under konstant angrep fra smarte algoritmer som fanger oppmerksomheten vår i et digitalt fengsel vi kaller en smarttelefon. Isteden tenker mange moderne mennesker at manglende kustus på egen oppmerksomhet handler om en utviklingsforstyrrelse og en defekt i hjernen som må utredes, diagnostiseres og medisineres med et amfetamin derivat. Nesten halvparten av alle henvisninger til psykisk helsevern handler om folk som opplever manglende evne til konsentrasjon og et viljestyrt eierskap til viktige kognitive evner.Istedenfor å trene oppmerksomhet, får mange en medisin som vil fasilitere et skarpere fokus, og det representerer kanskje en beleilig løsning på problemet, men de fleste medisiner har bivirkninger.
