Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger grew up in a house of 14 children and his his connection with his father, a World War II veteran, was watching Notre Dame football. Rudy's dream was to play for the Fighting Irish. But his high school athetic career did not merit attention from Notre Dame and he says his grades weren't good enough to get accepted there either. So a co-worker encouraged him to join the Navy. Rudy says his time in the U.S. Navy changed his life and made his Notre Dame dream possible. In this edition of "Veteran's Chronicles," Ruettiger tells us about his time in the Navy, including trips to Guantanamo Bay and serving on a destroyer in the Mediterranean Sea during the Vietnam era. He explains how a conversation with an officer who graduated from Notre Dame rekindled his dream to play football. He then shares the tough road to get accepted into Notre Dame, how the GI Bill paid for his academic journey to get there and how his military service helped him to connect with both football coaches for the Fighting Irish. Finally, Ruettiger walks us through life as a walk-on and the dramatic events that led to him taking the field, getting in the game, and recording a tackle in his one play from scrimmage. And he'll reveal what was real in the movie "Rudy" and where the filmmakers took some dramatic license.
Daniel “RUDY” Ruettiger is an American motivational speaker and author who played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. His early life and career at Notre Dame were the inspiration for the 1993 film Rudy which has transcended sports and been an icon in American culture. If you are a sports fan or even just a movie fan you undoubtedly know the movie Rudy. It's the story of a young man who was determined to attend Notre Dame and play on the football team even though he stood a mere five foot six and a hundred and sixty five pounds. He works tirelessly to earn the respect of his teammates and coaches, and repeatedly gets annihilated in practices, all while family and friends think he is out of his mind to chase such an outrageous dream. But that perseverance leads him to spending two years on the practice team and getting to be in uniform for his last game where at the very end of the game he gets to play, makes a tackle and is carried off the field by his teammates. The movie is based on a real story and today we have the man who lived that real story, Daniel Ruettiger, better known as Rudy. He tells me all about his days at Notre Dame, how he earned his teammates respect and the other story of perseverance in his life which was the ten years he spent trying to get a movie about his life made so people could be inspired.Rudy's websiteVisit my website: saxinthemorning.com for merchandise and other links. Need a bit of inspiration? What better way than to hear from the man who one of the all-time greatest sports movies was made about? Daniel 'Rudy' Ruettiger joins Nick Shepkowski in this episode of Fighting Irish Wired and gives you a bit of inspiration and motivation before sharing some of his stories from his time at Notre Dame. The conversation starts with Rudy discussing the movie but also the mentality it took to get him to accomplish his dream, a mentality anyone can apply to their lives. Hear 'Rudy' discuss: Creating a positive mindset and self-love Developing relationships, specifically with everyday people Living with no regrets The unpleasant but very first thing you need to do each and every morning Then hear Nick ask Rudy about some stories from his time at Notre Dame as well as his thoughts on a few Notre Dame/football related items including: His legendary high school football coach, Joliet Catholic's Gordie Gillespie What made Tom Brady so great for so long The actual events that led to Rudy dressing (no, it wasn't Joe Montana being hurt) The greatness that was Ross Browner How Ara Parseghian used to take pressure off the team each game-week How Rudy introduced himself to Ara in real-life (better than the movie portrays) Rudy reacts to the comments Joe Montana made about 'Rudy' in recent years Brian Kelly's exit from Notre Dame And finally, hear Rudy discuss a made-up part of the movie that would have been handled differently in real-life than it was in the movie...had it been true, at least! If this podcast had a tenth of the heart of Ruettiger, we'd have made All-American by now. Aaron Weber walks on to talk a little football, Notre Dame, and all things Rudy.
His story was told in a 1993 motion picture that USA Today ranked as the number one "Best Football Movie of All Time," centering on his time trying to get into Notre Dame and on their football team, and eventually into a game against Georgia Tech when he sacked the quarterback with less than 30 seconds to play in the game. He is a U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran and has gone on to be a motivational keynote speaker, including having spoken at the White House under two presidents. He has co-authored several books and offered his message in his original production live on Broadway. He also is the co-founder of the Rudy Foundation.

In this episode, we have invited Rudy Ruettiger. Daniel ‘Rudy' Ruettiger is the real-life inspiration for the iconic movie, RUDY. He carved his way into history books as perhaps the most inspiring graduate of Notre Dame University. Rudy rose from valleys of discouragement and despair to the pinnacles of success and achieved his first dream – to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. Today, Rudy is an award-winning motivational keynote speaker, author, and producer with over 25 years of experience speaking to corporations, universities, sports teams, and special events. In my talk with Rudy, he shares inspiring stories of hope, perseverance, beating the odds, and choosing courage over adversity—making a difference in his life and the lives of others. [02:34] How important is adaptability to change in sports? I was considered a dummy, and I graduated from high school third in my class in the bottom, but I had this burning desire, this inspiration, this feeling when I would watch Notre Dame football that's where I should be because I saw my father's eyes light up and get a new feeling about himself for Notre Dame. I said, “There's something there.” I would love to give that feeling to my dad. Notre Dame lights him up every Sunday when he watches Notre Dame Highlights. Inside-out transformation changes people. When you put these internal feelings together, that's when you had to change. [08:25] What advice do you give to people who are afraid to try new things? Who are you hanging around with? What movies are you watching? What books are you reading? You're living in an illusion of fear. There's nothing to fear but fear itself. And you have to eliminate that by moving forward and be willing to fail. Are you willing to fail? We learn from failures. But if you quit because you're afraid to fail, then that's it. [18:11] The Importance of Preparation in Games and Movies Notre Dame was an incredible journey. I learned a lot by moving forward by finding the answers. Playing football was just a contribution part of my life to contribute to something great. You needed mentors around you to push forward and help you get there. But preparation was a key as well. If I didn't train every day, I would never made that tackle. Be prepared every day like your dreams will come, just like the movie. I use the same model to get the movie made. As I played and got at Notre Dame, I prepared for that movie every day. [19:46] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? Believe in me, and you will be set free. Key Quotes [15:57 – 16:01] “Hard work pays off. Good luck comes into your life through hard work.” [08:49 – 08:57] “There's nothing to fear but fear itself. And you have to eliminate that by moving forward and be willing to fail.” Learn more about Rudy Ruettiger on: Website: https://www.rudyruettiger.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RudyInternational/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealrudy

Whatever you’ve most wanted in your life can’t compare to how badly Daniel Ruettiger wanted to play football for the Fighting Irish. And he did. The end. Okay, it’s not, and you might get sick of hearing him talk about it ALL THE TIME. Scoring At The Movies #43 delves into Rudy’s obsession and we certainly got on his case about all his whining. We debate whether this is a movie for dads or a movie for kids. There’s talk of the dreaded slow clap (good God) and the absurdity of the “Rudy, Rudy” chant (gooder God). So if you love this flick, you will not love us for the next 50 minutes, but listen anyway. After all, we’re entitled white men who tell people they want something they don’t even deserve. We ARE Rudy! Pedantry Alert: Sean Astin WAS 21 during shooting, so he was indeed the right age to play this character. Also, Notre Dame was in a bowl game in 1975 and 1976...and they’ve won 11 (!) National Championships. Tweets-a-comin’: Find us @moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies The website is www.top100project.com In 2 weeks, we’ll act like F...B...I agents and speak about Point Break

Put on your favorite jersey and join the Roundtablers as we analyze the 1993 film Rudy. This film was written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh. It’s based on the true story of Daniel Eugene "Rudy" Ruettiger, a walk on to the 1974-1975 Notre Dame Football team. Jarie feels it’s a great example of how to adapt a true life story. Each week one of the Story Grid Editors—Jarie Bolander, Valerie Francis, Anne Hawley, Kim Kessler, or Leslie Watts—pitches a favorite film as an example of a significant story principle. Then we team up to debate whether it succeeds or fails, giving authors deep insight into story structure. Click here for the full show notes.
The 1993 inspirational (to idiots) sports drama, "Rudy," is based on a true story—meaning that it’s mostly made up. Most of the characters never existed, and all the events are misconstrued to make it seem like this little manipulative weasel actually accomplished something special. He didn't. Sean Astin plays Rudy, a mediocre high school football player who wouldn't give up until he schemed his way into the University of Notre Dame and onto the football team. Like any true heroic journey, the process entailed a lot of butt kissing, begging and lying. Jon Favreau plays D-Bob, a lecherous douche who becomes fast friends with Rudy after realizing that, although they have different goals, they are cut from the same repugnant cloth. Charles S. Dutton plays Fortune, a mysterious groundskeeper with a heart of gold who may or may not be a ghost. He doesn’t realize how awful Rudy is, and he inadvertently mentors him throughout the execution of his Machiavellian plan. And weirdly Vince Vaughn is in this movie. PODCAST EPISODE 87 WITH RUDY REUTTIGER: SUMMARY Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger was born in Joliet, Illinois. He spent one year in the United States Navy following high school. Rudy worked for a power plant before applying to Notre Dame. Due to marginal grades, he completed his early college work at Holy Cross College before finally being accepted to Notre Dame in 1974. Following his time at Notre Dame and the release of the movie “Rudy” in 1993, Rudy has served as a motivational speaker, traveling the country inspiring others through his story of determination. For anyone who hasn’t seen the classic movie “Rudy”, Rudy Ruettiger grew up in a poor town outside Chicago. He was told over and over that he wouldn’t amount to anything, but he proved the naysayers wrong and – after lots of hard work – he beats the odds and got into Notre Dame. Rudy’s dream was to play Notre Dame football, and though he was not a ‘natural’ at the sport, his persistence, drive, and work ethic lead to him not only playing but being the first person to be carried off the field by their teammates at Notre Dame. In this interview, Rudy Ruettiger talks about everything from inspiration to overcoming obstacles and offers actionable tips for the listeners who want to succeed at their dreams. If you have ever felt like your dreams were impossible or that you have insurmountable obstacles in your way, this is the podcast you need to hear! Rudy firms believes that if he can accomplish his dreams, anyone can. About Rudy Ruettiger: 5:00 Rudy Ruettiger was born in 1948 in Joliet, Illinois into a lower class family of steel mill workers. Upon graduating from high school, Rudy worked at a power plant both before and after serving in the Navy. After losing his best friend in an industrial accident at the plant, Rudy decided to no longer waste time by putting off his dreams. He set out for the University of Notre Dame with hopes of one day playing football for the Fighting Irish. After getting admitted into Holy Cross Junior College in South Bend, Rudy spent his time studying and working as a groundskeeper at Notre Dame's Knute Rockne Stadium. During his time at Holy Cross, Rudy learned that he suffered from a mild case of dyslexia, which may have contributed to his previous academic struggles. He worked around his disorder and received good grades during his two years at Holy Cross. It took Rudy three semesters to be granted acceptance into Notre Dame as a transfer student. He almost didn't make it because Notre Dame does not accept seniors as transfer students. Rudy then won a spot on the scout team, against whom the varsity team ran its plays. Through two years of hard work, he earned the respect of the Fighting Irish players and coaches, and in the last home game of his senior year, Rudy dressed for the game. During the last moments of the game, Rudy tackled the Georgia Tech quarterback. Rudy Ruettiger later received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Notre Dame in 1976. Rudy’s Life on the big screen: 14:00 The movie “Rudy” inspired thousands of people with its message of not giving up, getting up when you get hit hard, keep moving forward, don’t listen to the naysayers, persevere no matter what, and be persistent. MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER: 27:35 Rudy entertains international corporate audiences with a unique, passionate, and heartfelt style of communicating. He reaches school children, university students, and professional athletes with the same enthusiasm, portraying the human spirit that comes from his personal experiences of adversity and triumph. His captivating personality and powerful message of "YES I CAN" stays with his audiences forever. Rudy's opening remarks receive thunderous applause and standing ovations from audiences of 200 to 20,000 people who emotionally chant "RU-DY, RU-DY!" About the 4 C’s He lives by: 30:18 1. Commitment – Despite being told time and again that he could never be accepted as a Notre Dame student due to his poor grades (much less become a member of their football team because of his small size), Rudy never let anyone or anything stop him from achieving his dream. In the end he succeeded and showed the world and other men that no matter what limitations others place on you, your life is in your hands and you can achieve what you dream of. 2. Character – Rudy’s dreams didn’t end on the football field at Notre Dame. He believed that his story could inspire others so he worked for a decade to learn what he needed to know about the movie business and kept knocking on doors and telling his story until Hollywood made a movie about his life. 3. Courage – Rudy Ruettiger had been literally knocked down hundreds of times on the football field leaving him bloodied and bruised. Yet, each time he was knocked down – often by much larger players – he kept getting up and fighting back. This is a clear example that you don’t need to be a big man “physically” to be an alpha male. 4. Contribution – Rudy continues to help others achieve their goals through his speeches, training seminars, interviews and scholarship programs. Best Advice: 37:09 “Steady the course.” Links: Rudy Ruettiger’s website Rudy Ruettiger’s YouTube channel
