A lot of Americans only know Eurovision via Will Farrell's film, “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” which capture some of Eurovision's over-the-top aspects, but the history of the annual event actually shines light on some of the biggest cultural, social and political developments in post-World War II European history. In this episode, Paul Jordan, aka Dr. Eurovision, joins Ben and special guest cohost/his wife Kelly Kolar for a conversation about Eurovision's origins, how it's been shaped by geopolitics, and, of course, who their favorites are in this year's contest, which airs live on May 17 at 3pm est. Dr. Paul Jordan is an expert and media commentator on the Eurovision song contest and the author of The Modern Fairy Tale: Nation Branding, national identity and the Eurovision Song Contest in Estonia. From 2015 to 2018 he served on Eurovision's communication team. You can learn more about him at DrEurovision.com. This episode was edited by Ben Sawyer.
In honor of Eurovision 2025 (which is happening this week) we watched Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga! Justin shares his enthusiasm for this film and all things Eurovision. Ashley is on board and has been on board with Eurovision for a few years now. Dave, who is brand new to Eurovision, seems to have been charmed both by this film AND Justin's Eurovision evangelism and maybe, just maybe, will watch this year's contest. Dave also picked the next thing we're going to be watching: Ted Lasso. Which Dave describes as "the best television show ever made."

Guests: David Dobkin (Director: Wedding Crashers, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga with Will Ferrell), Jerry Mitchell (Three Time Tony Award Winning Director/Choreographer, Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde) Eurovision is the most watched song contest in the world– with viewership reaching 200 million people. It's larger than the Superbowl! But while Eurovision songs have charted 28 times in America, 19 of those times came before 1974. This was shortly followed by a dry spell that featured only one Eurovision song on the US charts in nearly 50 years. What happened? And why, over the past three years, have we seen a resurgence– with Eurovision acts touring major venues in the states, garnering awards and press coverage, and, yes, charting? We explore these questions, and then talk with David Dobkin, the director of the movie responsible for the suddenly growing American interest in Eurovision– taking a look behind the scenes at the Will Ferrell vehicle that streamed #1 on Netflix, and tracing David's personal journey of discovering and falling in love with the contest as he made the film. Then we introduce Eurovision to Tony Award Winning Director Jerry Mitchell live on the podcast, with a game we call “Tops and Bottoms with Jerry Mitchell.” As we sip palomas in his Fire Island home, Jerry brings his expertise, honed through years of staging Broadway's biggest musicals, to help us evaluate what makes a successful Eurovision production number. 2020 was a dark time for live music. It also marked the first time in the Eurovision Song Contest's 65-year history where the competition was canceled. Rather than letting the lights go down in Rotterdam, Eurovision's fan community and the European Broadcasting Union found new ways to celebrate the contest's artists with at-home concerts, fan-driven countdowns, AI analysis of song content, and internet watchalongs of remastered editions of previous contests. When the contest returned in 2021, “Open Up”—the slogan carried over from the 2020 contest—took on new meaning. Participating nations took extra precautions to put on their selection processes safely while Eurovision made sure it could be “back for good.” Fans had more say in who would be representing their nation, the Rotterdam Ahoy crew tested the feasibility of large-scale music events, and improvements in streaming platforms over the last decade meant that even more eyes were on the contest. What wide-ranging effects could this have as Eurovision breaks out of its European bubble and starts bleeding into other areas of pop culture, including the Billboard Hot 100 and the 2023 Grammy Awards? "Play Ja Ja Ding Dong!"Ok, ok...But also, to celebrate the Eurovision Song Contest being held here in the UK, and in support of Ukraine, the history and legacy of not only the contest itself, but also Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Will Ferrell first saw the contest in 1999, and became a huge fan. It would take him over 20 years to bring a movie to the big screen, and it would be a movie endorsed by the European Broadcast Union. It had to balance a fine line between being an introduction to the competition for people who new nothing about the kitsch, campy song contest, and a love letter to its fans and participants. No-one expected it to become Oscar-nominated, though... I would love to hear your thoughts on Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga !CONTACT.... ALIEN PORTALS, EUROVISION, FEMINISM, GOUGH WHITLAM & MORE: It's the Eavesdroppin' Summer Pot Luck! We've been accused of being a little dark in recent episodes, especially as we're meant to be a comedy-chat podcast, so we've added a little mystical sunshine to the episode! In this week's summer pot luck, we address questions, pseudo questions, posits and posers from loyal Eavesdroppers and chat about the BIG QUESTIONS like… Is Al Teggart real? Can larvae sense when you're about to squish them? Are aliens birds? Can you drown an ant? Is Michelle an ant-killing psychopath? We also ask questions like... Do alien lifeforms have more than 5 senses? Are governments hiding information about aliens? Are there portals and other dimensions that alien lifeforms can travel through? Are shooting stars alien ships going into lightspeed? Can you have Botox and still be a good feminist? Why is having facial tweakments and being a feminist such a layered bombshell? Who is Caitlin Moran? What is the correct name for the jawbone? Who is Elizabeth Reid? Are aliens just billionaires from another planet? Do aliens go anal probing for fun? Is Skinwalker Ranch a portal for aliens? What's happened to Hazel The Psychic Real Estate Agent?? What is ding dong all about in Eurovision? It's jam-packed full of rambling feather-brained chat... Hear Michelle call the ex-Governor General of Australia Sir John Kerr ‘Jim' Kerr (#SimpleMinds anyone??)! Hear Geordie utter the words 'Kasabi Testicles'! Hear Michelle throw shade on the moon landing! Hear Geordie say ‘dobbed on' (look it up if you don't know what it means hahaha)! Hear Michelle ponder whether or not Boris really had Covid! Hear Geordie call Richard Branson 'Dickie B'! Hear Michelle say Chocolate Canal! And more... all on this week's episode of Eavesdroppin'! Stay beautiful and keep Eavesdroppin'! (Thanks Louise!) Ayelet and Pramit sit down to discuss Charulata, probably our favorite movie so far. We take in wallpapers, politics, Hollywood glamour, the Bengal Renaissance, and get deep into triangles (so many triangles). We also bring a new - salacious! - biscuit, and digress into our newest obsession, Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga.

We are BACK, baby! We talk about why last week's episode didn't get aired, then dive into some personal updates. We discuss our friendship, then talk about Comic-Con at Home and its "attendance" issues. Chuck talks about the Land of the Giants podcasts featuring Netflix, as well as a documentary about Danny Trejo. We discuss the Child's Play TV show/movie series. We briefly mention some restuarants we hit up as well as a day trip to Newport. Hey, remember the spat between Universal Studios and AMC Theatres? Well, a detente has been reached! Wow! I tell Chuck about the movie "Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga" (although I may have called it Fire Song while recording). Chuck tells me his thoughts on Happy Death Day, and then we discuss whether 90-Day Fiancee is xenophobic. - BradMP3 Download
I just have to go ahead and admit I don't understand Will Farrell. I still like him but I don't get him. He is awesome at what he does, until he isn't. In the last 10 or so years he's way more isn't than is. He had a strong run with some great movies with a few bombs in between. If you look over his career and count the good verse the bad his good ones are about 1 in 4. So basically 25% of his movies are really good, and 75% range from iffy to horrible. I used to excuse his bad movies by saying he is fearless when it comes to comedy, and that he is not afraid to take chances. That is no longer an excuse. The great movies he made shows his potential, and it shows that he knows what is funny. Sadly this Eurovision thing is not going to be his comeback movie. The movie is based on The Eurovision Song contest they have every year. The movie opens up in 1974 in Husavik Iceland a small fishing village. Everyone has gathered to watch the contest. There is actual footage of Abba performing in the contest that they won singing Waterloo. A young boy named Lars is captivated by the show and vows to his friends and family that he is going to win that contest someday. He is joined in his adventure by a childhood friend named Sigrit. We fast forward many years and Lars, played by Will Farrell, and Sigrit, played by Rachel McAdams, are singing some crazy song called Volcano Man. Lars' dad played by Pierce Brosnan comes in and tells them to be quiet and tells Lars that he is wasting his life and not only has no chance to win the contest, but he will never amount to anything. Lars' entire life is devoted to winning that contest, and Sigrit's entire life is devoted to Lars. But alas, her love for Lars is not reciprocated. This is impressed upon us every time someone asks if they are brother and sister Lars replies “more than likely not”, and Sigrit says “absolutely not!” This is a running joke, which becomes endearing more than funny along the way. A series of events, and not their singing talent, gets them to the tryouts, where everything that could go wrong, does go wrong. But they manage to get to the finals via a weird stroke of luck. Which is one of the funnier moments in the movie. The movie is a really long 2 hours and 3 minutes. It's Rated PG-13 for crude sexual material and some violent images, along with language. I think when Farrell was writing this he envisioned Blades of Glory but it doesn't come close. First, not many Americans are familiar with the Eurovision Song contest. B. The actual contest is so over the top with elaborate costumes and such it is already a satire of itself. It would be like making a movie about the bad singers they used to show on American Idol. It's really hard to be ironic about something that is already ironic. There are a couple of huge production numbers that contain actual winners of past Eurovision competitions. The movie can't decide if Lars and Sigrit can sing or not. They are supposed to be horrible, but then they are not. Lars' terrible accent seems to come and go, and I'm not sure if it's on purpose or if he is just lazy and wanted to get it over with. I know I did. My Score: 2 Buds Learn more about your ad choices. Rachel McAdams and Will Ferrell play enthusiastic but perhaps slightly self-deluded aspiring Icelandic pop stars in Netflix's new film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga, so who better than Eurovision devotee Mark Blankenship to join us to talk about it? Around The Dial takes us to Search Party, Hot Mess House, Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels, Unsolved Mysteries, and Outcry. Dave Lost Wages uses his Extra Credit to have us add a family member to a stale TV family. Mark presents the Dinosaurs series finale, "Changing Nature," for induction to The Canon. Jayus digs into the history behind the famous song competition that inspired the Netflix movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, the music stars it has introduced us to over the years, and its significance to the queer community.
