As economic conditions continue to create complexity, it's easy to look for quick fixes and short-cuts that ringfence and protect margin and profit. But at what cost? Almost every week a new scandal breaks of an organisation breaching standards and causing harm either to humans or the environment. Ethics, it seems, are on the wane. But what are they and why do they matter? In this episode, Jen, Dom and Cat ask Roger Steare – the corporate philosopher – to explain the cruciality of ethics in business, not least in the age of AI. More importantly, we discuss the role internal communication can play in upholding ethics in the workplace, in a way that serves both people and planet. Takeaways Ethics is the way we think about and debate how to lead a good life in every aspect of our lives. Ethics in business is a force for good, but it requires leaders of good character and a shift in mindset towards a healthier society. Effective dialogue and communication are essential for ethical decision-making and creating a well-functioning organisation. There is a growing pressure and expectation for organisations to do good for society, but there is a gap between business and societal values that needs to be bridged. The addiction to consumer capitalism and the focus on profit and growth hinder the pursuit of a good life and a sustainable civilisation. Cultural transformation in organisations can happen rapidly when leaders prioritise ethical decision-making and create a culture of trust and dialogue. organisations should align their values with universal moral values and apply the 'gulag test' to ensure their values are morally sound. Generative AI poses risks such as bias, misinformation, security breaches, and lack of accountability. Internal communicators should engage in moral education and facilitate discussions at all levels of their profession. Courage is required to take a stance and do the right thing in shaping the future of organisations and society. It is important to focus on the good work and responsible leadership as an antidote to the pervasive disaster narratives in mainstream media. About Roger Steare Roger Steare is The Corporate Philosopher recognised worldwide as a leading expert on moral reasoning, values-based leadership and culture, and the responsible use of AI. He has collaborated with CEOs and their teams across multiple industries to address billion-dollar ethical challenges and opportunities, focusing on reflection, learning, and a commitment to positive change. Notable partnerships include working with Joe Garner at HSBC in 2007, Openreach in 2012, and Nationwide Building Society in 2016, aiming to foster a culture of social purpose and ethics. In 2023, Joe wrote this testimonial of their work together. “Roger is brilliant in his field and thinks very differently from most.” Following the 2010 Gulf of Mexico disaster, BP asked Roger to develop a global Ethical Leadership program for 4,000 leaders. The program was so impactful that it earned recognition from the US Department of Justice in 2016 as part of the US$20.8 billion Consent Agreement with BP. In 2012, after RBS's massive restructuring, he was sought for a leadership and culture transformation program in collaboration with PwC, earning high praise from CEO Stephen Hester for the shared learning and growth experience. In 2021, he was invited to help a national government to define those moral values that are essential for a fairer society. Drawing on insights from anthropology, psychology, and moral philosophy, he recommended Humanity, Justice, Wisdom, Courage, Temperance, and Resilience as the values that define a fair and prosperous society. New from award-winning book publisher Octane Press, Trophies and Scars is the profoundly personal and remarkably revealing story of the life and times of NASCAR Hall of Famer Ray Evernham, as told to New York Times bestselling author Joe Garner. With forewords by motorsport legends Jeff Gordon, Rick Hendrick, and Roger Penske, the book launched in March. Trophies and Scars traces all the twists and turns of Ray Evernham's fascinating life. A son of the Jersey Shore, he was dedicated to fulfilling his boyhood dream of becoming a professional race car driver, and by age eighteen, he was banging fenders with good success on the Northeast short track circuit. When his dreams of becoming an Indy car sensation literally crashed and burned, he turned to Roger Penske's International Race of Champions (IROC), before another brutal crash forced him to give up his Indy dream for good. It was time to change careers. As a technical crew leader rather than driver, he developed new skills and strategies critical to building successful racing organizations. A brief, ill-fated, and downright volatile stint on Alan Kulwicki's crew, turned into a "right place at the right time" scenario, sparking a seminal partnership with racing phenomenon Jeff Gordon. They would prove to be one of the most potent racing duos in history. Evernham shares previously untold tales of how the pair led the No. 24 team to three championships in four seasons (1995, 1997, 1998) and an astounding forty-seven wins in just 216 starts, revealing in candid detail how and why their storied relationship came to an end. After his father died, Joe Garner found an old suit of his in the attic. His dad, Charlie had played bass at the Grand Ole Opry for decades and when Joe found the suit… he was struck with inspiration. He hadn't grown up wanting to play country music but when he picked up the suit, he knew there was unfinished business with his dad and that maybe he could figure it out through music. And thus, The Kernal was born. On his albums, he plays with conventions and standards and updates them with modern themes, like break up ballads that involve scrolling through Instagram. Listen to the Blood is the third album in a trilogy written in response to his father's passing. This week, on the Reckon Interview, we discuss that journey, which has carried him from a small town in East Tennessee all over the country. We chat about where he finds his inspiration. And we talk about whether this is the end of that red polyester suit. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Joe Garner, better known as The Kernal, crashes into The Marinade. This is the second time we have had the pleasure of sitting down with The Kernal, last time had to be on Zoom as most folks were not yet back to touring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This go ‘round we got to sit side-by-side in my Mazda SUV the day after Kern and the boys crushed their set at Tuffy's Music Box in Sanford, FL. The Kernal's latest record Listen to the Blood is the culmination of an idea Kern has been working on for several years, more about that in the conversation.

Welcome to Roadcase!! We're super-psyched to have Nashville-based artist, The Kernal aka Joe Garner, for this episode. Joe's recently released album, "Listen to the Blood," is a compelling alt-country take on traditional roots music and also a heartfelt tribute to his late father, Charlie Garner, who played bass in the Grand Ole Opry for thirty years. Joe is an incredibly astute and at times acerbic songwriter who, despite his lineage, came into music as a path in his late teens, studying poetry and working his songcraft at open mics in college. Joe's signature is the red suit which belonged to his Dad and which Joe wears when performing to continue the tribute theme -- it's both touching and also slightly small, as Joe is quick to point out! Joe is an intelligent and affable human who moves forward with a mindful attitude accompanied by a playful and creative spirit. So hop on the Roadcase bus and learn more about this unique and amazing artist, Joe Garner, The Kernal. It's a great ride... and here we go!!For more information: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comTheme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Welcome to Roadcase!! Please welcome The Kernal, Joe Garner, to the Roadcase community. Joe's latest album, "Listen to the Blood," released January 14, is a very personal journey through the mind of this amazing artist whose modern take on country music is both heartfelt and wonderfully structured. His album is a posthumous tribute to his Dad, who was a touring musician and played at the Grand Ole Opry for 30 years. Joe takes it to an even higher level by wearing his Dad's original blood-red suit on stage -- a striking and lovely tribute. Joe's heart also belongs on the road where he relishes the opportunity to portray his songs in a live setting, and where his gift for intimate storytelling -- honed at open mics and with a deep love of poetry -- truly comes alive. Pandemonium reigned in downtown Dallas on the afternoon of November 22, 1963. An assassin's bullet had murdered President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Within an hour, police had arrested their lead suspect Lee Harvey Oswald, a former Marine and accomplished sharpshooter. On Sunday morning, November 24, with TV cameras in place, and NBC airing it live, Oswald was led through the department's basement for transport to the county jail. And, for the first time, the nation watched an historic national news event - as it happened.Written by Joe Garner and Brian WilliamsContributors:Gary DeLaune, formally a reporter for KLIF Radio DallasBill Lord, formerly a producer for ABC NewsIke Pappas, formerly a reporter for WNEW Radio New YorkBob Huffaker, formerly a reporter for KRLD Radio and television and the CBS affiliate in DallasFred Rheinstein, formerly the field director for NBC NewsChad Hagan, formerly a producer for NBC NewsHomer Vinso, formerly a cameraman for NBC NewsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

“War of The Worlds” is a phenomenon of a bygone era, and of a medium a hundred years old, yet its lessons resonate to this day. It's the original “deepfake of 1938.” A radio drama about an alien invasion but presented as “breaking news,” scared the daylights out the nation. On the evening of October 30, 1938, radio listeners across the U.S. heard a startling report of mysterious creatures and terrifying war machines moving toward New York City. But the hair-raising broadcast was not a real news bulletin—it was Orson Welles' adaptation of the H. G. Wells classic. This episode goes behind the scenes of the making of Welles' famed radio play and its impact. Welles's broadcast became a major scandal, prompting a different kind of mass panic as Americans debated the bewitching power of the radio and the country's vulnerability in a time of crisis. When the debate was over, American broadcasting had changed for good, but not for the better.Written by Joe Garner and Brian WilliamsContributors:A.Brad Schwartz, broadcast historian and author of BROADCAST HYSTERIA: Orson Welles's War of the Worlds and the Art of Fake News (Hill & Wang, May 2015)Orson WellesHoward KochJohn HousemanSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

As the anchor of MSNBC's nightly The 11th Hour, Brian Williams is no stranger to live coverage of major breaking news, and now he's narrating a new podcast about broadcast news, We Interrupt This Broadcast, which tells each story through the voices of the broadcast journalists, producers, photographers and others who covered the story on that day.Based on the book of the same name by writer Joe Garner, We Interrupt This Broadcast tells each story as it unfolded through the eyes of reporters, news anchors and the photographers, producers and technical crews that drop everything to cover major news. “You know, I was there for some of these,” Williams told me. “And I've delved into all the audio, and I've sat in the studio and narrated them, and they still make my pulse race. They still make me emotional.”Previous episode:In episode 13 of the podcast, I spoke with Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace on the 25th anniversary of the Fox News Sunday public affairs show.“When I came on [in 2003], I wanted to put Fox News Sunday at the forefront of the conversation, that it would be taken as seriously and make as much if not more news than any of the other Sunday shows,” Wallace told me. “And I think we've succeeded at that.” This is a public episode.
