Open Arms Adoption Agency has been Sam's vision for many years. Since reuniting with his birth mother 15 years ago, he has been developing a service to support and educate women when they are in a time of need. His birth mother was 15 years old and not prepared to raise a child when he was born, so adoption was the most loving decision for both her and Sam. Their adoption was originally closed, but as an adult Sam was able to locate his birth mom and now he feels fortunate to have a great relationship with both of his birth parents.Sam has had his own successful financial services firm for 21 years, he is a Washington State native, and has two WSU Cougar alumni children. His entire family feels blessed that 50 years ago one adoption laid the foundation for their strong family today.OpenArmsAdoptionAgency.comhttps://www.instagram.com/openarmsadoption/https://www.facebook.com/openarmsadoptionnwhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/sam-barnes-8a5551200/

His great-aunt was actress Ann Paige, who appeared in the films China Doll and The Young Lions with co-stars Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando, Dean Martin, and Hope Lange. David-Matthew fell in love with writing at the early age of 7, when his second-grade teacher recognized his storytelling talents after he wrote a Halloween-themed story titled The Blue Witch. Thanks to his sixth-grade drama teacher, who saw playwriting potential in him, Barnes' first play was produced when he was only 11. The script was a tribute to soap operas titled Life Isn't Easy. By the age of 13, David-Matthew was writing plays and short stories on a second-hand typewriter. David-Matthew credits meeting young adult author Norma Fox Mazer (who was a visiting author at his junior high school) as the defining moment when he knew he would become a writer. As a teenager, David-Matthew lived primarily in Northern California, where he attended the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VAPAC) at Sacramento High School and later Berkeley High School, where classmates included actress and model Rebecca Romijn and music video director Dave Meyers. In high school, David-Matthew found a love for cheerleading, which would become a part of his life for over a decade. At the age of 15, David-Matthew became a regular on the television series Dance Floor '86, which he appeared on for one year. That same year he published his first short story, a dramatic tale of five teenagers surviving the aftermath of a nuclear war titled The Children Are Crying, featured in the anthology Across the Generations. He has been a professional writer since. David-Matthew wrote and directed the coming-of-age indie film Frozen Stars (starring Lana Parrilla of ABC's Once Upon a Time), which received worldwide distribution and is available via Netflix DVD. The film was recognized for featuring a predominantly Latino cast. As a result, the film was the subject of international press coverage and received a world premiere screening at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles.David-Matthew then directed an independent documentary called Why So Fly? which offered a backstage look at the all-female hip-hop trio Northern State. Today we are joined by Alexander Barnes, who co-wrote Play Ball! Doughboys and Baseball during the Great War (Schiffer Publishing, 2019) with Peter F. Belmonte and Samuel O. Barnes. Blending sports and military history, the authors revisit the national pastime and the Doughboys who were fervent fans. Using primary sources and rare photographs, Barnes and his co-authors tell a compelling tale. Keeping soldiers occupied during the lull between military battles was always a goal for commanders, and what better diversion for red-blooded American men than baseball? Play Ball! takes readers to the front lines of the Great War, where games were sometimes played within shouting — and shooting — distance of the enemy. The authors are baseball fans and historians of World War I. Al Barnes served in the Marines and Army National Guard for 30 years and had a tour of duty during Desert Storm. He currently is the historian for the Virginia National Guard Command. Al’s son, Sam Barnes, earned his bachelor’s degree in history from James Madison University, and works as an archivist at Army Logistics University in Virginia. Peter Belmonte is a retired U.S. Air Force officer and also served in Desert Storm. He earned his master’s degree in history from California State University, Stanislaus. Together, these three historians provide a new window into baseball overseas during the Great War. Bob D’Angelo is a digital content editor with Cox Media Group. He earned his master’s degree in history from Southern New Hampshire University in May 2018. Play Ball! takes readers to the front lines of the Great War, where games were sometimes played within shouting — and shooting — distance of the enemy. Bob earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida and spent more than three decades as a sportswriter and sports copy editor, including 28 years on the sports copy desk at The Tampa (Fla.) Tribune. Bob can be reached at bdangelo57@gmail.com. For more information, visit Bob D’Angelo’s Books and Blogs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

They call them "the basics". Little, innocuous things that don't seem to really matter. But they do. In fact, something as simple as sending an acknowledgment email to an important message can make all the difference in keeping a team engaged and a client confident. This week Carl and Sam Barnes talk about why getting back to the basics is so important and how to get better at them. And when you do, you can enjoy the positive changes in both your work and your relationships with the people on your team.

In this episode we have a chat with Will Richards and Sam Barnes from Howls. As mentioned at the start of the episode, the brand new batteries I bought for our recording equipment a few minutes before the start of the episode lasted just 17 minutes, so the sound is all recorded using Voice Memos on my iPhone. It's not bad, but at times it does sound a little like 4 people talking into an iPhone. You can listen to and purchase Howls debut album from our bandcamp: https://truthseekermusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-headache
