The Republican Party has long been lacking in courage. But profiles in it can still be found among the scores of Trump administration staffers who have come out against their former boss, at potentially immense personal cost. One among them: Sarah Matthews, who served as Donald Trump's deputy press secretary until January 6th. On the latest episode of Inside the Hive, Matthews opens up about the “cognitive dissonance” she experienced as a spokesperson for Trump, recalls how the Capitol riot became her breaking point, and unpacks why she has thrown her support behind Kamala Harris's campaign, even if doing so puts a target on her back. “Donald Trump is so much bigger than just me,” she says. “The guilt that I would feel” from sitting on the sidelines,” Matthews adds, “would have been much greater than the fear that I might feel right now.”

EPISODE 77: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: God what a terrible speech! Trump's official declaration he's running was so bad Fox News bailed out of it! And CNN bailed out of it! And Mick Mulvaney trashed it. And two ex-Trump Press Secretaries. AND DURING IT IVANKA TRUMP ANNOUNCED SHE'S LEAVING POLITICS! (5:00) The mainstream GOP continues to distance itself; Fox News lists 13 GOP presidential possibilities - none of them are Trump (5:40) Chris Christie trashes Trump to GOP Governors conference, gets applauded (8:30) These are not moral judgments, not patriotic ones, not decency ones, not pro-democracy ones. But these people have the survival instincts of cockroaches and somebody just flipped on every kitchen light in America (8:40) Even crazy Wendy Rogers in Arizona is wondering if she's been living in an echo chamber (11:15) And yet there's just enough loyalists to remain to make sure if the GOP can keep Trump at bay, he'll run as a third party candidate in 2024. They were the ones outside Trump Tower yesterday screaming "Trump or Death" - to which we say "OFFER ACCEPTED!" B-Block (15:31) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Elsa in Brooklyn (16:26) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Latest on the Russian missile or rocket that hit Poland; (18:14) IN SPORTS: Angels with their annual dubious free agency signing; Richard Nixon's alma mater ends 107 years of football; and the merchandisers of the NBA finally outsmart themselves (22:03) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Republicans keeping 50-99% of what they raise for Herschel Walker and Fox's Kevin Corke are no match for Worst Persons Hall of Famer Bill O'Reilly - he's baaaack! C-Block (26:43) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: O'Reilly's contretemps with the "News Nation" channel reminded me Dan Abrams has a show there, on the cable tv news version of 'Nick-At-Nite.' And THAT reminded me of the day MSNBC tried to switch the disrespected Abrams from hosting its unpopular 9 PM show, to being network General Manager. After the staff stopped laughing, it wound up being worse than we could have dreamed. Within ONE WEEK management had reassured us he would be fired. He became a Lame Duck in ONE WEEK! Sarah Matthews has a political resume similar to a lot of conservatives her age. At Kent State, she joined the College Republicans and made her first pilgrimage to the annual CPAC conference in Washington. Sarah interned on Capitol Hill for John Boehner and Sen. Rob Portman, both of Ohio. And then she got a job doing comms for Republicans on the Hill. But a few years later, in June 2020, she was working for Donald Trump. Like a lot of her colleagues, she was well aware of Trump's flaws, but she agreed with his policies. When her mentor, Trump press secretary Kayleigh McEnany invited Sarah to be her deputy, Sarah didn't think twice. It was a chaotic seven months, marked by the Lafayette Square protest incident, Covid, the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Then came Jan. 6. You probably remember Matthews from her primetime testimony to the Jan. 6 committee in July. She testified about her experience in the White House during the insurrection and how Donald Trump's actions that day so disgusted her that she resigned that night. The January 6 committee is back next week, on October 13th, for its first hearing since the one at which Matthews appeared. Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza sat down with Sarah Matthews, former deputy White House press secretary, to hear the full story of what it was like for a young Republican to publicly break with the president, upend her career, and experience the full wrath of Trump and his supporters by cooperating with the January 6 committee. Reps. Good news, both David Waldman and Joan McCarter set their alarms for KITM o'clock today! The January 6 Prime Time Committee hearings will have at least 2 more disillusioned Trump White House aides, Mathew Pottinger and Sarah Matthews, testifying on Thursday. The Committee's intent is always to leave us wanting more, which is fine as long as they can keep coming back. Merrick Garland doesn't want to make waves before the election, which is fine as long as he is actually planning to after the election. Democrats voted to protect access to abortion on Friday, and the Biden administration is stepping in to remind pharmacies that withholding birth control is illegal. The forced birther nightmare is just beginning, however. The heat is breaking records in Britain and throughout Europe. It's pretty hot in the US as well. The AC in Joe Manchin's Maserati and yacht is just fine, thanks for asking. Chuck Schumer is only Senate Leader, not a coal mine board director, so why should Manchin listen to him? No Democrat has time to make deals with Mitch McConnell with all of the federal judicial positions vacant... If only they had time to fill a few SCOTUS seats too. A constitutional crisis brews in Pennsylvania, with three counties still refusing to certify accurate results. Ohio's Supreme Court says Ohio's GQP-backed congressional map is unconstitutional, but they said that last election also. (The Constitution never stops Ohio Republicans.) The Associated Press officially found no problems with ballot boxes and of course no conservative F's will be given. The Wisconsin Supreme Court says ballot drop boxes are just like North Korea and Syria. Jimmy Carter and James Baker will tell you that the Electoral Count act needs reform, but former North Carolina Chief Justice Mark Martin (No, not the NASCAR driver) was the guy who told Donald Trump that Mike Pence could overturn the election, and lawyer William Olson (No, not the director of 1986's Rockin' Road Trip) told Trump to declare martial law. The January 6 mob wasn't just hunting for Pelosi and Pence, they wanted to destroy ballots too. Sure, there were copies, but who'd believe that?
The January 6 Committee hears testimony that multiple advisers told Trump his plan aided by lawyer John Eastman to overturn the election was illegal, but he relentlessly pressured his Vice President Mike Pence to follow his orders anyway. Trump denouncing Pence for ‘lacking courage' in a tweet causing a surge as the mob was storming the Capitol, was like “pouring gasoline on the fire”, White House aide Sarah Matthews said. The panel says rioters came within 40-feet of Pence while they called for his head. There's also testimony on the alarming levels of violence Trump's lawyer was willing to tolerate causing as a consequence of his actions, and the DOJ says an informant told them Proud Boys would have killed Pence and Pelosi if they had the chance on January 6.
