In this digital age, our children are growing up as digital citizens. To ensure their safety and ability to contribute positively to society, educating them about their digital responsibilities is essential. Join us on Kids Gone Global as we talk to Laura Jakubowski, the Technology Integration Coach about how she developed a digital citizenship curriculum for the International School of Hamburg tailored to younger students, focusing on digital literacy and societal participation. The program follows a systematic approach, beginning with digital citizenship for 5-6-year-olds, building a foundation of skills for their journey through secondary school. Concepts covered include responsible use, media balance, digital identity, data protection, research skills, and managing online presence. Laura emphasizes self-awareness and establishing routines and habits around technology use and screen time. Digital safety and addressing cyberbullying are fundamental aspects of education. The curriculum focuses on teaching students to use technology responsibly and kindly, while also providing resources to handle cyberbullying situations. Ultimately, the goal is to prepare children for a future where technology serves as a conduit for meaningful connections between people.
In this first episode, we delve into the core of the matter: what is the purpose of school today? What skills do students need to learn for their future and how do schools go about teaching them? Our guest, Dr. Alan Knobloch, the Head of the International School of Hamburg, will argue that to best prepare citizens of the future who can thrive in an ever-changing global environment, schools should aim to serve the needs of the child as a whole, develop students' knowledge and their talents, but also, and increasingly, their socio-emotional wellbeing and resilience. How do they go about this? Tune into this podcast to learn more.

This is one of my best episodes so far. I feel so much gratitude that you are listening to this one. Thank you. On 8/25, the day before I was in a bike accident, I recorded episode #43. I connected my phone and microphone, and called tap dancer friends all around the country. Some answered including; Bril Barrett, Rush Benson, Sarah Reich, Evan Ruggiero, and Davon Suttles. Others who did not pick their phones were left voicemails including; Matt at Dancing Fair, Ricci Milan, Rusty Frank, Anthony LoCascio, and Ashley Gonzalez. Then on the next day, 8/26, I flew off of a bike, hit my head and broke some bones. I tell the story here at the beginning of this episode along with an update. Then you will hear my phone conversations originally recorded 8/25 and unreleased until now. I am thankful, grateful, and touched by your well-wishes, prayers, and generosity. What's that word for when you put one foot in front of your other foot? And then you put the first foot back in front of the next foot and do it over and over and over? Andrew & Polly and their friends think about STEPS - the kinds you take with your feet, like when you go on a walk with mom, or when you get up and dance! Special guest Sarah Reich shares her favorite kind of steps - tap dancing. We investigate the sounds her taps can make and talk about the Tap Music Project and her awesome new album of collaborations, "New Change." And we wonder... if STEPS can have more two meanings... can it have three? Are there other kinds of steps? What do you think? If you're interested in finding out more about Sarah, you can check her out at sarahreich.com and on Instagram @sourtaps. Sarah Reich (Performer, Choreographer, Instructor, Composer) has emerged as one of the new leaders in the Art Form of Tap Dance. Sarah has been sought after to perform, choreograph, and teach in over 40 countries. "I want to continue to bring tap into mass media with great respect and quality," she says, focusing on "reprogramming the minds of the general public on their perception of tap dance." Sarah has become one of the art form's pop culture ambassadors, thanks to her appearances in videos with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. Her videos with them (A Star Wars–themed tribute, "The Tap Awakens," & “Thriller”, a Michael Jackson cover featuring Wayne Brady) have garnered millions of views on YouTube, all receiving rave reviews. She has toured the world with Postmodern Jukebox playing prestigious venues such as Radio City Music Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Sydney Opera House as well as a televised PBS special filmed in Las Vegas. With her Tap Music Project intensives in various cities, Reich teaches tap dancers how to dance with more musicality, communicate with musicians and write music. Using a live band in class, she instructs students on how to "scat" rhythms or transcribe choreography with rhythm notation, among other skills. Sarah is developing new, and exciting works with her company Tap Music Productions, with her debut Tap Jazz Album entitled “New Change”. This album is originally produced, composed from percussive tap rhythms, and performed by a great selection of musicians to create a unique sound. She hopes this is just the beginning: "I want to be the first tap dancer to win a Grammy Award". Sarahreich.com
Brian Seibert, a dance critic for The New York Times, offers an authoritative account of the great American art of tap dancing in his new book, What the Eye Hears. Seibert’s entertaining history illuminates tap’s complex origins—from the jig and clog influences brought from Africa by slaves, to its growth as a cousin to jazz in the vaudeville circuits, to its ubiquity on Broadway and in Hollywood, and finally its post-World War II decline and more recent reinvention. Seibert, born and raised in Los Angeles, will take the ALOUD stage to discuss tap’s influence on American culture, including the legacy of L.A.’s thriving tap scene. With archival film footage and special performances by the young L.A. choreographer Sarah Reich, acclaimed as one of the new leaders in tap, this program will be sure to move you.**Click here for photos from the event.
