Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1:  Gwinnett voters reject transit tax – again Gwinnett County voters rejected a proposal to expand transit for the third time in five-and-a-half years, with a 53.7% to 46.3% margin. This marks the fifth rejection of a transit sales tax, including past proposals to join MARTA and expand the county's transit system. The latest proposal aimed to fund a major expansion of Ride Gwinnett through a 1% sales tax, including new routes and microtransit. Some voters skipped the transit tax question, citing confusion and insufficient information. The defeat means transit expansion won't be funded by sales tax but could still proceed through other funding sources. STORY 2:  Trump carries Georgia four years after losing Peach State Former President Donald Trump secured Georgia's 16 electoral votes, narrowly defeating Vice President Kamala Harris with 50.8% to her 48.5%, according to projections. With only three rural counties left to report, Trump led by nearly 120,000 votes, significantly outperforming his 2020 loss to Joe Biden by 11,799 votes. This victory in Georgia, along with a win in North Carolina, shifted focus to the "Blue Wall" states for Democrats' hopes of retaining the White House. Trump and Harris both campaigned extensively in Georgia, with Trump holding rallies in rural areas to bolster support.   STORY 3: Gwinnett's Overstory Rooftop Bar To Host Holiday Cocktail Class Overstory Rooftop Bar is hosting a Holiday Cocktail Class on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., where guests can enhance their mixology skills by learning to craft two signature holiday cocktails: the Winter Chill and the Fall Spritz (NA). Led by Food and Beverage Director Ashley Castillo, the class will focus on using seasonal ingredients and refining cocktail techniques, perfect for holiday gatherings. You're not over messaging, but people just aren't interested in your emails? We have a solution. in this week's AKNF podcast. How to create the perfect edutainment / entertainment email. How to figure out the right mix of edutainment and merchandise focused emails. Will be discussing how to effectively build value in email campaigns to increase site traffic. How do you build an audience of loyal openers and clickers that actually care about reading your emails? The most common mistake people make with email content, is not creating engaging and interesting content that actually builds loyalty in a list. We're all used to getting cliché “GET X% OFF”, “LOOK AT THIS NEW PRODUCT”, “ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BUYING X” style emails. What actually builds brand loyalty and keeps people opening and clicking is a radically different approach to email content strategy. ACTIONABLE ADVICE: Take a deep look at your audience. You need to understand their pain points and interests. Identify your core buyer, and the interests that go along with their profile. Following that, you need to be aware of the position your brand holds in their eyes. They trust you enough to buy your products or subscribe to your email list, so clearly they regard your expertise in some way. Lean into this, and figure out how you can leverage your expertise. Figure out a unique way that works for your business and audience to create an ongoing series of content-first focused emails. Don't overthink merchandising and CTA's, don't hunt aggressively for the conversion, just provide some genuine value, or entertainment to your audience. To avoid bombing AOV and keep the emails generating money, make sure to sneak in product / service promotions. Shoehorn in your products in a way that's logical and subtle. For example, with a recipe email, you recommend your cookware to make the dish. Now for the real killer part, for each value providing email, create two versions. One version that has all / or the majority of value in the email, and one version that is gate kept behind a CTA. For example, with a recipe, you have the actual ingredients in the email itself in one version, and another version of the email with just a teaser about the recipe, but no actual details of it. CTA linking to site with the actual details. Split test these against each other and see what performs better. Do this a few times, and learn and adjust. Figure out what the exact tipping point is for your audience. How much up-front value do you need to give in your emails to get a click and keep engagement. This gives you two benefits: A more engaged list that sees the value in your emails Provides you a keen understanding of how much value to provide in your pre-click vs. post-click experience. Do this consistently, and keep adapting emails and adjusting the content to hone in on a series of emails that resonates with your audience. Build up the health of your list. Once you have a consistent format, stagger it with your normal merchandise focused emails. If you notice list health is extremely strong, top end metrics are good, run more of the merchandise focused emails. If you notice your list health declining, top end metrics going down, run more of the value focused emails to win back your list. He's also known for inventing the Tappercussion e-tap electric tap dance instrument, which he has used on some of the six albums he has released over the years. Shoehorn, tap dancing saxophonist youtube: https://youtu.be/dRDh7YS3ocg (MC Shoehorn Conley) website: https://shoehornmusic.com/ Marti's Links! http://MartiMendenhall.com http://Patreon.com/MartiMendenhall Marti's Music Kitchen Season 1 Cookbook https://martimendenhall.com/cookbook-store.html Persimmon Pumpkin Seed Salad Serves 4 INGREDIENTS ¼ cup red onion, minced Juice of 2 lemons 2 cups cabbage, thinly shredded 1-2 Fuyu persimmons, peeled and thinly sliced (a potato peeler works great!) 1 cup red lettuce greens, torn ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese ¼ cup pepitas (shelled pumpkin seeds) 2 tablespoons tahini 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS Soak onion in lemon juice for a few minutes. Combine with remaining ingredients and serve. Savory Bean Sauté ADVANCE DIRECTIONS Soak dried beans overnight: cover with water by 1-2 inches. Drain and rinse. (Quick soak: cover beans with water by 2 inches in large pot. Boil 5 minutes; remove from heat, let sit one hour.) INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter 4 cloves garlic, chopped or 2 tablespoons garlic flakes ¼ cup onion, chopped 1 carrot, chopped ½ cup mushrooms, sliced 1 cup radish greens, chopped and blanched 1 cup dried mixed beans (should yield at least 2 cups when cooked) 1 tablespoon curry powder (S&B is recommended) 1-2 tablespoons soy sauce 3 cups rice, cooked If desired: salt, pepper, brewer's yeast, grated cheese, hot sauce (Sabor Mineiro is recommended) DIRECTIONS Cook soaked beans in water until tender. (Shoehorn loves his stove-top pressure cooker, but Instant Pot or stove-top boiling will do.) Blanch radish greens in boiling water. Strain and chop. Heat olive oil in skillet on medium-high heat. Add garlic, onion, carrot, mushrooms and radish greens, in that order. Turn heat to medium; saute 1 minute. Cover with beans; do not stir. Add curry powder and soy sauce. Stir when heated through and serve over rice. In this episode of Elixir Mix the panel interviews Jon Carstens about his work with Nerves. Michael Ries gives a little background on Jon, as they have worked together and Jon helps run the remote nerves meet up that Michael attends.  Jon recently started working with Frank Hunleth at Smart Rent. Jon tells the panel what an adventure it is working at Smart Rent.   The panel asks Jon about the parts of the Nerves ecosystem he has been working in. He explains how he has been working with NervesHub to manage collections or groups of devices. He has also been working with ShoeHorn controlling app start order and erlang heart stop module. Making sure that they can remote reboot devices.    Jon talks more about what Smart Rent does. He explains that there are lots of brands and types of smart home devices, not all of which can connect to the internet. At Smart Rent, they connect various brands and devices using their own custom-built hub. Smart Rent has many benefits tenants and even more for property managers. Property managers can use Smart Rent to manage vacant properties, monitor for leaks, break-ins, fire, and dangerous temperatures. They can even set up open houses remotely, changing the temperature to comfortable levels, turning on and off lights, and unlocking and locking the doors for walkthroughs of the properties.    Justin Schneck gave a keynote at ElixirConf 2019 where he showed of an IEX console Nerves device. The panel asks Jon about his role in building the devices. Jon explains how he was tasked with the project. He explains how the console works using an IO. The hardest part, Jon explains, was getting the ASCII characters right. He spent hours working on it, he shares the libraries and tools he used to help him get it right.    The panel asks how the IEX server sessions work. Jon explains what would happen if you tried to SSH into an IEX session running through NervesHub on a device and other examples of how it all works. The panel discusses the benefits of debugging devices using the IEX console. Jon explains that it has been extremely beneficial in debugging remote devices.    While the IEX console is very useful, Jon warns that it is not very pretty. The IEX console was designed by backend developers and he points out some of the things that could use a little love. The panel asks about contributing to this project and invites listeners to contribute on the Nerves GitHub pages.     To finish, the panel asks Jon about his lightning talk. Jon launches into the story of his at-home Nerves projects. It all started when they replaced their old ceiling fan for one with a remote. The problem was that the frustrating design coupled with his remote thieving kids, the fan became an annoyance, to say the least.    Jon discovered that the remote-operated using a radio frequency. He learned all he could about radio frequencies and how they worked. He warns listeners not to broadcast radio frequencies to far from their homes because there will be legal ramifications. Using a raspberry pi and a jumper cable, Jon built a device that now controls all devices in his home that operate using radio frequencies. He shares the tools he used to record the frequencies from the remotes and the library he built of the frequencies. Jon shares his dream of running all remote-controlled devices either through his phone or his voice. His next project is infrared. I'm with him in the cupping room at World Cup Coffee and Tea at Northwest 18th and Glisan which is where we do all of these things. Sometimes baristas come in and have to grind coffee, but you know, we’re in a coffeeshop. Glad you decided to spend some time with us again this week. You have seen Shoehorn, I betcha. Yes, he plays clubs and concerts, but you also might find him busking on the street, something he’s done all over the world. He has a new album and dvd out called Wingin’ It. It’s got some of Oregon’s best Jazz musicians on it, plus one of his daughters. His other daughter did the album jacket design.
