We're even trying to convert music in to mp3 from Apple and it helps to have software up to date as I was getting failed messages. Scott Bradlee and Kyla Scanlon: Nostalgia and Nuance (Just Press Record LIVE! at Epsilon Connect)

BE MORE MID. No, seriously. Or at least come listen to this discussion of why the nuance and nostalgia around mid-ness might just save the world. Scott Bradlee is kind of a professional nostalgia pusher.  Postmodern Jukebox has been flipping songs into older styles and genres for multi-generational audiences for over 10 years now. Their tagline is “Todays Hits Yesterday.” It works, in that the band can can sell out rooms all over the world, and - with a cool 6.25 million YouTube followers - they're well represented in rooms they're not even physically in too. I've always wanted to ask him why he thinks it works as well as it does. It can't just be Nickelback sounding better as a Motown act. Or can it?  Then there's Kyla Scanlon. In her new book (reviewed here!) she's taking her concept of “the uncertainty cake” and applying it across economic history.  A quick synopsis of the uncertainty cake idea: If Reality and Expectations are the outer layers of the cake, then the middle connective filling can be described as Theory, which covers as much as it can, but is boringly unpoetic until you add the secret ingredient to every great recipe, love VIBES. As an educator and commentator, on not just the economy, but markets and culture at the largest scales, Kyla Scanlon is kind of a professional nuance pusher. Where else but Just Press Record are you going to get professional nostalgia pushing Scott Bradlee and professional nuance pushing Kyla Scanlon on stage, in conversation, comparing and contrasting the details of each other's work? We talked about: How nostalgia works in cycles Reboot culture vs. remix culture What happens when the past becomes more unpredictable than the future How to look back without being “period-correct” (and why that fresh insight can work) The role community plays in experiencing art (and everything, really) Why it's so hard, and so so so important to BE MORE MID Why compressing time and giving access to damn near everything ever is a form of risk mitigation that might not be helping humanity these days And so much more. I mean, Chumbawamba even gets a shoutout in here. You couldn't possibly imagine a more diverse 40-minute conference talk than this. Maybe you missed it at Epsilon Connect, but Cultish Creative on YouTube is here for you now. Be sure to like, subscribe, follow, share, and all the social media things, but more than anything, please (watch and) LISTEN. These ideas are profound. Scott and Kyla are so articulate, and they're such deep thinkers, spending this time with them - it brought me so much joy. I'm so excited to share it with you here and now: But wait, there's more! Well, more thank you's. Extra special thanks to Ben Hunt, Rusty Guinn, Harper, Alex, Rafa, and everybody else who put Epsilon Connect 2024 together. You all, with FABLE (The Foundation for Applied Bio Linguistic Exploration) and Vanderbilt too, created the space for conversations like this to happen in public. Incredible. Extra extra special shoutouts to Steve Ujfalussy at Pinnacle Creative Productions and Jack Forehand for their production wizardry too! Can't wait to share some more of the footage you helped capture and curate.

My guest this week is the one and only AUBREY LOGAN. Aubrey is singer songwriter, trombone player and an amazing performer. It would have been a lot easier if Aubrey Logan would have just picked one. But she's never been one to be pigeon-holed. She lives her life outside the box and that makes her difficult to define. And that's OK with her because she purposely defies definition. Her Top 5 debut album in 2017 helped establish her as one of the premier young singer-instrumentalists in the country. Her participation in Dave Koz's #1 album, DAVE KOZ and the Summer Horns: From A to Z in 2018 helped cement her position. But it was her own #1 album in 2019 that really helped Aubrey Logan become a household name with music aficionados around the world. Because it was that album, Where the Sunshine is Expensive, that showed the depth of songwriting that she's capable of. Her new Album STANDARD will be released on May 21. The 1st 2 singles ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET and DREAMS are available on all music platforms.  To download her music on Spotify, cllick HERE Her appearance on American Idol helped her meet some of the people she's worked with throughout her career. She is beloved by not just the dedicated fans of Postmodern Jukebox, but she considers the creator, Scott Bradlee, and her colleagues within the collective her true friends. She absolutely loves performing. But it's in her writing that we find out who Aubrey Logan really is. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Casey Abrams became an overnight celebrity in January 2011, when he was selected to be a contestant on the popular televised talent competition American Idol.   ******LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE AND SUBSCRIBE!!! www.richredmond.com/listen   Abrams was born on February 12, 1991, in Austin, Texas. Abrams' family lived in Illinois for several years before settling in Idyllwild, California, where his father taught filmmaking at the Idyllwild Arts Academy. Abrams became a student at Idyllwild, where he studied both jazz and classical music, with emphasis on the double bass and piano. In addition to jazz, Abrams developed a fondness for classic jazz and pop vocalists such as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and James Taylor, and began studying singing as well as instrumental performance. When the producers of American Idol began holding auditions for their tenth season, Abrams appeared at the tryouts in Austin, and his version of Ray Charles' "I Don't Need No Doctor" impressed the judges, who made him one of the 24 semi-finalists who took part in the televised competition in Los Angeles. Abrams' warm, engaging style and likable personality made him a favorite with American Idol's viewers as well as the judges, as did his eclectic choices of material, ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Nirvana. When Abrams fared poorly in the voting after reaching the Top 11, the show's judges made the rare choice to "save" him, intervening to keep him in the running after an impressive performance of Elton John's "Your Song." However, four weeks later, Abrams was finally voted off the show, coming in sixth place while Scotty McCreery came in first. After making a number of television appearances and taking part in the annual American Idol concert tour, Abrams made his recording debut in the fall of 2011, when he and Haley Reinhart (another season ten contestant) recorded a duet version of the seasonal favorite "Baby, It's Cold Outside" that was issued as a single. In January 2012, Concord Music Group announced they'd signed Abrams to a record deal, and his self-titled debut album was released in June 2012.   Beginning in 2014, Abrams became involved with Scott Bradlee's jazz-themed covers ensemble Postmodern Jukebox, joining the group on several tours and recording fan favorite covers with them like a New Orleans' take on Sam Smith's "I'm Not the Only One" and a version of Haddaway's "What Is Love" done in the style of the Isley Brothers. His ebullient vocal delivery and double bass chops made him a strong fit for the band, even as he continued to record his own music, including the 2016 EP Tales from the Gingerbread House. 2018 saw the release of Abrams' third full-length, I Put a Spell on You, while he dipped back into his roots the following year with the aptly titled effort Jazz.   Some Things That Came Up:  Eve of Destruction w/ Cyndi Lauper Playing on American Idol Rich's playing near Steven Tyler and JLo on AI Getting emotionally attached to an acting role Playing with Jack Black on AI Putting a bass track to "Kiss" by Prince "Make Out" performance    Follow Casey: www.caseybassy.com @casseybassy   The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. She’s a singer. She’s a trombone player. She’s a songwriter. She’s a performer. It would have been a lot easier if Aubrey Logan would have just picked one. But she’s never been one to be pigeon-holed. She lives her life outside the box and that makes her difficult to define. And that’s okay with her because she purposely defies definition. Her Top 5 debut album in 2017 helped establish her as one of the premier young singer-instrumentalists in the country. Her participation in Dave Koz’s #1 album, Summer Horns, helped cement her position. But it was her own #1 album in 2019 that really helped Aubrey Logan become a household name with music aficionados around the world. Because it was that album, Where the Sunshine is Expensive, that showed the depth of songwriting that she’s capable of.  In between her recording commitments, Logan finds time to share the stage with artists such as Alabama Shakes, Meghan Trainor, Pharrell Williams, Josh Groban, Dave Koz, The Commodores and The Boston Pops at venues as diverse as Ronnie Scott’s famous jazz club in London to the expansive Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. She’s appeared on Jimmy Kimmel, the Grammys’ Award Show, and ABC’s The Goldbergs. Aubrey has recorded a duet with her childhood hero, Gloria Estefan. She’s won multiple awards at the Montreux Jazz Festival. She’s beloved by not just the dedicated fans of Postmodern Jukebox, but she considers the creator, Scott Bradlee, and her colleagues within the collective her true friends. And she loves performing. But it’s in her writing that we find out who Aubrey Logan really is. Learn more about Aubrey Logan at www.aubreylogan.com.

Examples include vintage covers of Radiohead’s “Creep” and a 1920s Gatsby style rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” Since 2013, Bradlee’s PMJ performances have received over 1.2 billion YouTube views and 4 million YouTube subscribers. Before Bradlee’s career took off with PMJ, he was a struggling musician in New York with a passion for jazz, ragtime, and doo-wop styles.  Today PMJ has toured 6 continents and performs in excess of 300 shows per year. Bradlee authored the 2018 memoir Outside the Jukebox: How I Turned My Vintage Music Obsession into My Dream Gig which Broadway legend Kristin Chenoweth described as “Candid, hilarious, and wildly fun” and it’s “the book I wish I’d had when I was getting my start in theatre.”

Sarah Reich (Performer, Choreographer, Instructor, Composer) has emerged as one of the new leaders in the Art Form of Tap Dance. Sarah has been sought after to perform, choreograph, and teach in over 40 countries. "I want to continue to bring tap into mass media with great respect and quality," she says, focusing on "reprogramming the minds of the general public on their perception of tap dance." Sarah has become one of the art form's pop culture ambassadors, thanks to her appearances in videos with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. Her videos with them (A Star Wars–themed tribute, "The Tap Awakens," & “Thriller”, a Michael Jackson cover featuring Wayne Brady) have garnered millions of views on YouTube, all receiving rave reviews. She has toured the world with Postmodern Jukebox playing prestigious venues such as Radio City Music Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Sydney Opera House as well as a televised PBS special filmed in Las Vegas. With her Tap Music Project intensives in various cities, Reich teaches tap dancers how to dance with more musicality, communicate with musicians and write music. Using a live band in class, she instructs students on how to "scat" rhythms or transcribe choreography with rhythm notation, among other skills. Sarah is developing new, and exciting works with her company Tap Music Productions, with her debut Tap Jazz Album entitled “New Change”. This album is originally produced, composed from percussive tap rhythms, and performed by a great selection of musicians to create a unique sound. She hopes this is just the beginning: "I want to be the first tap dancer to win a Grammy Award". Sarahreich.com

Celticunderground:The Celtic Football Fan Podcast

Sorry for the break for the past few weeks but we’ve been busy but we’re back.  A football fans podcast from the guys behind The Celtic Underground and now in our 12th season possibly the greatest time in those 12 years to be a fans of the hoops and maybe longer.  Officially the best football fans in the world, we support a great team that is also in a different league to the rest of Scottish football.   Since the last podcast we’ve defeated Hibs to reach the first final of the season, bossed the 2nd best team in Scotland on their own patch and moved close to European football after Christmas.  With all of this (and the sacking of Pedro and construction of a 1960’s office block by Hearts) there was so much to chat about we needed two guests - Mark Cooper and Hullbhoy.   The music this week is Scott Bradlee’s Post Modern Jukebox with a cover of Shake it Off and Morcombe and Wise.  Ohh and it’s the Basque Atletic Bilboa and not the Castillian Athletico Madrid.   Enjoy…
