In this episode of Counsel to Counsel, I'm taking a summer pause from interviewing to catch up on some projects. I share with you my thoughts on using time blocking as a way to get to the things that are important but not urgent. December is a great time to take stock, hit the reset button, and do some planning. With 2024 around the corner, I've been speaking with my clients about setting goals for the new year. I'm not talking about making New Year's resolutions. It's important to understand that resolutions and goals are not the same. Resolutions often lack specificity and a plan of action, making them easy to abandon. On the other hand, setting clear, well-defined goals lays a foundation for measurable progress and sustained success. In this episode, I'm pleased to welcome Wendy Merrill and Jennifer Forester, two great coaches who also work with the legal community. Jen and Wendy are also talking right now to their clients about goal setting and they have some great tips to share. In our conversation, we speak about setting marketing and business development goals for your law practice. But Wendy and Jen also have some thoughts about other areas in your professional and personal life where setting goals can help ensure that you are moving forward in all aspects of your life. They also discuss creating a “To Don't” list. Jennifer Forester helps lawyers avoid random acts of marketing. She's a business development coach for corporate and consumer attorneys, drawing on 20 years of experience in sales, marketing, and client service roles with big law and boutiques. Jen lives in northern California with her two Boxer dogs and her husband, who is a family law attorney. Wendy Merrill is a growth strategist, thought leader, and founder of StrategyHorse. StrategyHorse is a consulting firm dedicated to improving law firm profitability through alignment and engagement strategies. For over a decade, Wendy has been working with lawyers and firms to revolutionize the practice of law. Wendy lives in the DC area. The thought of goal setting can be a turn off for many people including adults with ADHD. One of the reasons is that many adults with ADHD are not clear on what goals they would like to set, both personally and professionally. Goal setting does not have to be scary or overwhelming. Those of us with ADHD can set meaningful and achievable goals if we prepare properly and keep them attainable. Back on Overcoming Distractions is Sarah Reiff-Hekking, Ph.D. of True Focus Coaching, Inc. She takes us right back to the basics of goal setting and advises how to make this part of our life easier and more manageable. First, she defines what a goal is to get our discussion going. From there, Sarah gives us advice so we can determine what type of goals we should be setting in our lives. She discusses how we can understand the deeper meaning or personal significance of the goals we set. Some of the other discussion highlights include. · Setting short term goals. · Trusting yourself when setting goals. · What's most important right now? · Planning for reality. · Moving towards a goal, not away from it. · Understanding how goals complement each other. · Understanding your time frame when setting goals. · Analyzing what's working. · Setting mini deadlines. Dr. Sarah Reiff-Hekking joins us this week as we discuss time management and how to mitigate procrastination. She talks about fuel for your ultimate self and challenges us to give ourselves permission to take a break. Her and Dave talk about the 5 steps to overcome procrastination and overwhelm to make more time for what you really want to do in life.
This episode was recorded during Well-Being Week in Law 2023. In Massachusetts and around the country, there are a lot of programs being offered to get lawyers thinking about the many mental health challenges that are widespread in the legal community. This particular week was designated to align with Mental Health Awareness Month which is May, and many organizations ran workshops and gatherings to talk about depression, substance abuse, anxiety, stress and a host of other topics. Underlying many of these issues is having too much to do and too little time to get it done. Many lawyers need tools for effectively managing their time and dealing with overwhelm. In this episode of Counsel to Counsel, I spoke with Sarah Tetlow of Firm Focus who gave some great tips on delegation, dealing with interruptions, and generally managing our time more effectively. Sarah is an expert on the subject. Sarah is an experienced productivity consultant, trainer, and international speaker for attorneys and other busy professionals. Through one-on-one consulting, strategic planning, workshops, and group trainings, Sarah works with attorneys, law firms, and busy professionals to find personalized ways in which to manage one's day with a proactive and focused approach. Sarah is also the creator of the ARTT® Email Productivity system and course which she discussed in this episode. Through Sarah's passion for focused work and her unique and sympathetic coaching approach, she helps her clients change their behavior and reduce their stress and anxiety. Did you set goals at the beginning of the year or did you create any New Year's resolutions? Have you gotten off track on your New Year's goals or completely forgotten what you set out to do this year? Many people set goals at the beginning of a new year but oftentimes, we struggle to stay on track. Back on Overcoming Distractions is Sarah Reiff-Hekking, Ph.D. founder of True Focus Coaching. Sarah and Dave first discuss whether the new year is the best time to set goals. Hint, maybe not. Sarah suggests reframing goals and calling them either a target or a vision and even the label ghost targets and visions to better resonate with yourself. Sarah says it's important to find what works when it comes to reminding yourself of your goals. That can include vision boards, all types of visual reminders and regular reminders to keep you on track. Sarah also reinforces something she has talked about before on the podcast which is making sure your personal goals come before your career goals. Sarah advises on ways you can continue to keep steering toward your targets and goals. She also says it is important to create authentic goals and those that are intrinsic. Goals should be about you not what other people think you should be doing. You should also make sure if this is a meaningful goal or something you are just chasing. And Sarah suggests making sure you go through goal setting and ways to stay on track in a non judgmental way. Don't be afraid of this goal-setting discussion because we are going to discuss setting goals in a way that supports both our professional and personal desires. Ask yourself this question when setting goals. Who do I want to be? If you're like many people, you set some New Year's resolutions, and then by February, you fell off track pretty quickly with meeting your goals or even getting started on them. On this episode of Overcoming Distractions, we are going to discuss how to stay consistent on the progress needed to achieve our goals. We have back on the podcast, Sarah Reiff-Hekking, Ph.D. of True Focus Coaching. First, we discuss whether setting New Year's resolutions is a bad idea or if there might be a better time of the year to set them as well as implementing goal setting on a more frequent schedule. Sarah says that we have to understand who we want to be in order to set and achieve goals. This means finding a way to align both professional and personal goals so they are harmonious. Your professional goals should help support your personal and family goals and the way you want to live. Sarah also says that setting and achieving goals helps us with our self-esteem and gives us purpose as well as meaning in life. It also facilitates engaging with others which can help with the process. Dave and Sarah also discuss why good habits and routines are some of the keys to making progress with our goals. With behavior change, small moments can help you in the long term. And as always Sarah gives us some quick tips to get back on track. She says always keep restarting and a good rule of thumb is to revisit your goals every three months. She also says if you're struggling, just focus on today. You can work up to revisiting your goals weekly, make sure you're taking your whole life into consideration, and renew your goals when needed. In this week's podcast, Annette speaks with Attorney Tracey Ingle and speaker, coach, and Psychologist Dr. Sarah Reiff-Hekking about setting goals for yourself for the new year. Tracey is the founder of Ingle Law and works with clients to create their estate plans and plan out the future. Sarah is the founder of True Focus Coaching Inc and works with clients to transform their lives and businesses. Setting goals can feel overwhelming for some people. Some may not be able to visualize their goals or be able to think of goals in the long term rather than short term. The first thing Sarah mentions to people is to NOT do resolutions as they are really only a will power thing and will only get you so far. You should create a completed vision of your goal – what will it look like when you reach it? Once you have that in mind, you work backwards to create the steps to get to this goal. This does not have to be figured out right away. You will want to break it into smaller pieces and spend at least 5-10 minutes every so often working on some of the details to get you to your goal. Another important key is to pick only one or two goals and make them realistic. Most of us including those that are caregivers, are already too stressed and pushed to their limits. Adding a huge list of unrealistic goals to accomplish is a sure way to chip away at your personal energy and motivation levels. Don't try to do it all yourself. Delegate if possible. You may find someone that would love to do that task for you or maybe someone will have an easier and quicker way to do it. Tracey uses systems with her clients to keep them on track with their estate plan goals. There are clear steps as to who does what next and by what date. Keeping clients on track and moving toward their goals keeps the momentum going. Tracey even sends out congratulations cards to clients when their estate plan goals are met and are complete. Annette, Tracey and Sarah all agree that getting support and asking for help is important. It is human to get stuck and need assistance. It is not a sign of failure and not a sign that you are not good enough if you can't do it alone. Sarah leaves us with the thought that “Success never happens in a vacuum.” If you would like to contact Attorney Tracey Ingle, you may find her on her website Ingle Law, as well as on Facebook and Linked In. Sarah Reiff-Hekking can be found at True Focus Coaching Inc, on Facebook, Twitter and Linked In Please send us your comments: As Annette mentions in the intro, she recently purchased a building in Massachusetts. As of January 1, 2022, Special Needs Companies, Special Needs Law Group and Special Needs Family Services will all be housed in this new location. They will be working with designers and contractors to create a family friendly environment that is special needs accessible. Annette wants to hear from you – what is something you would like to see or something that would make your visit more comfortable when you visit a professional's office. Of course they will focus on ramps and more handicapped parking but are there other items that you would like to see or were maybe lacking in your last visit to a professional's office?
