Marcia Dawood, an experienced investor and advocate for small business capital formation, is on a mission to change that perception. In today's episode, she shared how equity crowdfunding has made it possible for anyone to invest in startups and drive meaningful change.Marcia has been an angel investor for over a decade and served as chair of the Angel Capital Association. She now sits on the Securities and Exchange Commission's Small Business Capital Formation Advisory Committee, working to ensure small businesses have a voice in regulatory decisions.During our conversation, she reflected on the transformative power of equity crowdfunding. "Back in 2016, when the SEC changed the rules, it became possible for anyone to invest in startups for as little as $50," she said. "But not enough people know about it. The potential for impact is enormous."Marcia's journey into angel investing began with a simple invitation to an investor meeting. At first, she assumed it was a world reserved for the rich and well-connected. But as she listened to entrepreneurs share their visions for changing the world, she realized she could be part of it. “I thought, ‘Where have I been?' I had no idea this was happening,” she recalled. “I started to see how powerful investing could be as a force for good.”Today, Marcia is committed to making investing more inclusive. She highlights that platforms like Republic, WeFunder, and StartEngine have made startup investing transparent and accessible. "Everything is disclosed on the platform—CEOs can't have side conversations with select investors. That levels the playing field," she explained. One of her biggest concerns is the lack of funding for women-led startups. "Women make up about half the population, but they receive just two to three percent of venture funding. That has to change," she emphasized. By encouraging more people—especially women—to invest, Marcia believes equity crowdfunding can reshape the entrepreneurial landscape. For those hesitant to take the leap into impact investing, her advice is simple: start by observing. "Take your time, look around, and learn. See which companies align with your values. Then, when you're ready, take that first step."Marcia's message is clear: investing isn't just about financial returns—it's about fueling innovation and creating a better world. By lowering barriers to entry, equity crowdfunding is opening the doors for everyone to be part of that change.tl;dr:* Marcia Dawood discusses how equity crowdfunding is expanding access to capital for underrepresented founders and everyday investors.* She shares her journey into angel investing and how it has become a powerful tool for impact.* Marcia highlights the importance of transparency and accessibility in platforms like Republic, WeFunder, and StartEngine.* She explains the need for more investment in women-led startups and the potential for crowdfunding to bridge the gap.* Marcia identifies decisiveness and resourcefulness as her superpowers, offering actionable tips for making better decisions and solving problems efficiently. How to Develop Decisiveness and Resourcefulness As a SuperpowerMarcia Dawood has honed two superpowers that have propelled her success: decisiveness and resourcefulness. "I've had people tell me that if they were in a crisis, they'd want to stand next to me," she said in today's episode. Whether in angel investing, business, or personal life, she has built a reputation for making quick, confident decisions and creatively solving problems. One of the most powerful examples of her decisiveness came during the pandemic. She shared the story of JoyLux, a startup whose CEO immediately pivoted when faced with financial uncertainty. Instead of waiting for conditions to improve, the company quickly adjusted its strategy, engaged investors, and ensured financial stability. "That kind of decisiveness can be the difference between survival and failure," Marcia explained. For those looking to develop decisiveness, Marcia offers practical advice:* Identify the Core Decision – Clarify what needs to be decided and focus on key factors.* Seek Input, but Don't Overanalyze – Consult trusted sources, but avoid analysis paralysis.* Take Ownership – Make a choice and commit to it, rather than second-guessing.* Learn from Decisions – Reflect on past choices to improve future decision-making.* Act with Confidence – Recognize that no decision is perfect, but moving forward is better than inaction.By following Marcia's example and advice, you can make decisiveness and resourcefulness a skill. With practice and effort, you could make them a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileMarcia Dawood (she/her):Advisor on the Small Business Capital Formation Committee - Vice Chair, TEDx Speaker, Podcast Host, Author, Associate Producer, Helping people learn to Do Good while Doing Well, U.S. Securities and Exchange CommissionAbout U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission: The SEC Small Business Capital Formation Advisory Committee was established by the SEC Small Business Advocate Act of 2016, and is designed to provide a formal mechanism for the Commission to receive advice and recommendations on Commission rules, regulations and policy matters relating to small businesses, including smaller public companies. On today's Redefiners episode, Simon and Hoda sit down with David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee (IRC). David oversees the agency's humanitarian relief operations in more than 50 war-affected countries and its refugee resettlement and assistance programs in 28 United States cities. David shares the journey of how the IRC was founded by Albert Einstein and has since grown to help 33 million people in countries affected by crisis in 2023 alone. He talks about how the IRC prioritizes its limited resources to help those in need and how he manages through the complexities of not only providing aid to clients living in war-torn areas, but also of working with a host of partners often with competing agendas. He also digs into the importance of trust and what leaders can do to build or rebuild trust with their organizations, partners, and clients/customers. We'll also hear from Dee Symons, a Managing Director in our London office, who will highlight why trust is such a critical component of an effective team, and how leaders can best foster a culture of trust. As attorneys, we share many qualities that make us effective in representing our clients. Our skepticism, aversion to risk, sense of urgency, competitiveness, and pessimism, can all be good for out clients. But when it comes to building a practice, advancing our careers, or taking on leadership roles, we are more effective when we remove our lawyering hats. As it turns out, these qualities can also have a pernicious effect on our mental health. In this episode of Counsel to Counsel, I share my thoughts on why it is important to stop thinking and acting like a lawyer in social situations. This podcast is dedicated to the memory of Edgar Schein, a former professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management and author of ‘Process Consultation' who sadly died four days before this podcast was recorded. He made notable contributions in the field of organizational development in many areas, including career development, group process consultation, and organizational culture. Professor Schein's influence has extended into many other ‘helping' domains, including Educational Psychology and Coaching Psychology. His valued legacy will live on, while we send condolences to his family and loved ones. In this episode, Dr Natalie Lancer discusses with Mark Adams, Prof. Christian van Nieuwerburgh and Dr. Manfusa Shams how coaching benefits students and staff alike. We highlight the two streams of practice in coaching in education, one involving educators using coaching tools and models from an educational perspective, and the other involving coaching psychologists using psychological knowledge to support individuals. We discuss the specific ways in which coaching psychology can make a positive difference in schools and education. We explore: Why is coaching psychology in education important? What do we know about coaching in education today? What impact can coaching have on students and teachers? How does coaching psychology interface with educational psychology? To what extent is grounding coaching practice in appropriate theories and models important? What are the key considerations in making coaching initiatives successful in schools? How do the different methods of delivery (external/internal coaches, peer-to-peer) affect coaching outcomes? How can coaching psychology help build capacity within school communities? What is the value of reflective coaching spaces for leaders in schools? What are some key current priorities for research and the application of coaching psychology in education? There are a growing number of pathways into coaching in education and a variety of ways that coaching initiatives can be implements in schools. Coaching in education can also be used to help address mental health and well-being issues in schools and we discuss its future potential uses in this context. Join us on The Coaching Podcast as we have the pleasure of introducing Jolie Wills, a renowned creator of tools for coaches hailing from New Zealand. Emma Doyle's connection with Jolie was established through the AUS-DENVER hub, a vibrant community that unites Australians and New Zealanders in Colorado. Drawing on her expertise as a cognitive scientist and a global thought-leader in resiliency, leadership, and team effectiveness under pressure, Jolie takes center stage in this episode. With firsthand experience leading teams through incredibly challenging circumstances, including the aftermath of the devastating Christchurch Earthquakes in her hometown, Jolie imparts invaluable insights. Prepare to discover practical examples of having courageous conversations and gain a deeper understanding of prioritizing our own health and well-being in the future. Get ready for an enlightening conversation that will empower you both personally and professionally. Some of the highlights include; 3.01: Christchurch Earthquakes (2010 - 2015) 3.36: Worst coaching moment: The superhero curse (the feeling of drowning) with too many balls in the air. When you are feeling like this, how can you be of support to others? 5.18: Self-care - "Energy and time is finite" meaning that both energy and time are limited resources. This also means that we have to be very intentional to create the biggest impact. 6.12: Best coaching moment: By taking a break (giving herself permission) Jolie was able to re-set and role-model self-care for others to follow her lead. 9.07: Sliding Doors: Christchurch Earthquakes - supporting the psycho-social role around recovery for the people affected by the earthquakes. Living with a constant state of threat and uncertainty (15,000 aftershocks from 2010 - 2015) and helping people who were suffering room burnout. 14.28: What Makes a Great Coach? (Curiosity, Empathy, Courage) Curiosity - what you first see and what you first hear is often really clouded by your own judgments. Therefore, be a curious explorer instead! Empathy - people need to know that you care, they feel heard, and valued, and that you have their best interests at heart. Courage - to ask the circuit breaker questions so that they can have a fresh look at their situation (mirror questions). ED Qu's: "So what's the truth here?" "What are you not saying?" JW: Be mindful of your "Planned continuation bias." And take a temperature check. 18.39: What is your go-to question? JW (a recovering martyr): "Are you a martyr (no boundaries) or are you a professional (care deeply about the mission but you set your boundaries)?" 24.31: How did you come up with the name Hummingly? 27.16: What are the 'Doing Well' cards? The Doing Well deck supports the well-being of coaching clients and their teams. There are 5 themes to help you be intentional, and set a plan when you are under pressure to help with your self-care while still being able to perform at the same time. For example; 30.10: Theme: Connect - your social network is critical during tough times. Theme: Dam Good Decisions - Ask a series of questions to check your decision-making. 34.30: What is the workshop in a box? To help leaders support their people. Tip 1) Know where your people are at? "Where am I at? Because that is where I am leading others to!" Leaders need to acknowledge how hard it is to look after themselves. Tip 2) Having a crew - who are the perspective checkers? Wise heads? Truth tellers? Vulnerability buddies? Tip 3) Have a set of leadership questions (to re-set someone's compass) For example: "What is most important to you in your life and what do you need to do to protect it?" Daphne Javitch is a Health Educator and Founder of Doing Well, who overcame lifelong symptoms of stage four endometriosis through diet and lifestyle. Her approach to health is founded in nutrition but emphasizes holistic well-being, including sleep, stress management, exercise, AIS connection and purpose, and routine building. Daphne's endometriosis symptoms started when she was 13 years old, and they became more debilitating as she grew older. At the age of 34, she was diagnosed with endometriosis and was advised to go on birth control immediately. Instead, she chose to address her condition holistically with the help of a health coach. Daphne was consistent and rigorous in her approach, and some of her symptoms went into remission within six months. She went from taking 12 Advil a day on the worst day of her period to just one Advil for her entire cycle. This awakened an innate feeling within her and propelled her life and profession in a new direction. Daphne believes that consistency, repetition, and creating a routine play a vital role in improving health. She understands that people have a lot of information, but they are missing the how. Being consistent with small adjustments has a cumulative effect and is more impactful than extreme measures that lead to extreme failure. “Living a healthy life is not just about exercising, it's about finding ways to support your body, especially if you're dealing with chronic pain, chronic conditions, injury, or disabilities. While we have the potential to heal ourselves internally, we also live in a very unnatural modern world that exposes us to toxic burdens. Even if we do everything perfectly, we can still experience health challenges.” – Daphne When asked what someone could do to lead a more uplifting, energized life with a healthful routine, her response was simple: start drinking a liter of water before noon. This not only ensures hydration but also helps people keep track of how much water they're drinking, which can be difficult to gauge without measurement. Drinking water in the morning is also supportive of intermittent fasting practices and helps give the body an internal rinse after a night's sleep. As for words of encouragement, Daphne advises people to focus on the return, especially when things don't go as planned. Life is full of unexpected interruptions, but it's important to find joy, excitement, and spontaneity, which can be healing in their own right. In summary, Daphne's journey with endometriosis taught her the importance of a holistic approach to health, emphasizing nutrition, sleep, stress management, exercise, AIS connection, purpose, and routine building. Her story is a testament to the power of consistency and the innate healing power that we all possess. Follow her along on her journey. At Inspira Physical Therapy in Brooklyn, NY, we use different holistic osteopathic techniques like Craniosacral Therapy and visceral manipulation. Learn more and book an appointment today.
This episode was recorded during Well-Being Week in Law 2023. In Massachusetts and around the country, there are a lot of programs being offered to get lawyers thinking about the many mental health challenges that are widespread in the legal community. This particular week was designated to align with Mental Health Awareness Month which is May, and many organizations ran workshops and gatherings to talk about depression, substance abuse, anxiety, stress and a host of other topics. Underlying many of these issues is having too much to do and too little time to get it done. Many lawyers need tools for effectively managing their time and dealing with overwhelm. In this episode of Counsel to Counsel, I spoke with Sarah Tetlow of Firm Focus who gave some great tips on delegation, dealing with interruptions, and generally managing our time more effectively. Sarah is an expert on the subject. Sarah is an experienced productivity consultant, trainer, and international speaker for attorneys and other busy professionals. Through one-on-one consulting, strategic planning, workshops, and group trainings, Sarah works with attorneys, law firms, and busy professionals to find personalized ways in which to manage one's day with a proactive and focused approach. Sarah is also the creator of the ARTT® Email Productivity system and course which she discussed in this episode. Through Sarah's passion for focused work and her unique and sympathetic coaching approach, she helps her clients change their behavior and reduce their stress and anxiety. The subject of attorney well-being is a topic of conversation at most major law firms today. Several years ago, the Report of the Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being was issued by the American Bar Association, Conference of Chief Judges, and other legal organizations. It called well-being an essential element of a lawyer's duty of competence. More recently, Law.com and ALM Intelligence conducted a survey of lawyers and staff members, mostly from large firms, has found that anxiety, depression, and isolation remain at concerning levels. And about 74% of the respondents thought that their work environment contributed to their mental health issues. When asked about the factors that had a negative impact on mental health, top concerns were always being on call, billable hour pressure, client demands, lack of sleep, and lean staffing. In January of 2020, The Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts created a Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being. And there are similar initiatives in jurisdictions all over the United States. But what are the core issues that these committees are addressing? Why are businesses paying attention to the subject? How are these issues playing out in a corporate environment and what can the legal community learn from corporate America. Mari Ryan has thought a lot about well-being in the workplace and while her focus is not the legal community per se, she has worked with companies in many industries to address these issues. Mari Ryan is a workplace well-being strategist, speaker, and award-winning author. Mari works with organizations to create workplaces where both the people and the business thrive. Mari is the author of award-winning book The Thriving Hive: How People-Centric Workplaces Ignite Engagement and Fuel Results. Successful companies don't just withstand disruption, they find ways to innovate throughout technological change. In this episode of CDO Matters, Malcolm interviews Dr. Cheryl Flink, an author and noted researcher in the field of human-centered design and social psychology. Dr. Flink shares insights from her upcoming book, “Doing Well and Doing Good — Human Center Digital Transformation Leadership,” set to release in March 2023. She makes the case that digital transformation represents a fundamentally different way of operating, one that represents an optimal intersection of business, social and employee success. She proposes that a successful digital transformation is one that prepares organizations to withstand — and even prosper from — the constant disruption of technology, where the delivery of human value is as important to financial value. In addition to making a strong case for a human-centered focus within digital transformations, Dr. Flink also shares some of the keys to digital transformation success — most notably the need for a strong mandate from senior leadership — something many companies still struggle with. Having broad awareness and consensus around the ‘why' of a digital transformation is the foundational level of a ‘scaffold' approach to a framework for digital transformation that Malcolm discusses with Dr. Flink — outlined in more detail in her book.Dr. Flink also makes the case for creating the corporate culture needed to allow for employees to feel safe to highlight imbalances between any of the various tensions that naturally exist within organizations — for example — between speed/agility and governance. The more balanced these forces are — and the more employee or stakeholder needs play an equal role to financial needs — the more human centered the approach will be. This is exactly what Dr. Flink sees as the optimal approach for long-term social and business success. This episode of CDO Matters is perfect for those CDOs who have been tasked to execute a digital transformation strategy and who are looking for alternatives to more traditional program management approaches to these large-scale business initiatives. This episode explores how using more human-centered design approaches could optimize not only shareholder value, but also employee and social value. Dr. Flink makes a compelling case that ‘doing good and doing well' is not only preferred, but increasingly required during a time of constant disruption and social scrutiny of business practices. Key Moments[3:55] What is Human-centered (HC) Leadership?[7:10] Who Should Reap the Profits of AI/Digital Technology?[10:45] Human-centered Leadership's Role in Environmental, Social Governance (ESG)[13:20] Leadership Benefits of HC Leadership[14:15] HC Leadership in Digital Transformation[16:00] A New Way to Work[19:40] Applying HC Leadership to Data Strategy[24:25] Differences in Approaching a Digital Transformation[28:50] The Decision-Making Process[31:35] HC Leadership InvestmentsKey TakeawaysThe Significance of Human -Centered Leadership [5:40 — 6:50]“Are we really thinking about how we create human value? Not just financial value...I think that in this human centered leadership world, it is about the ability to think through that calculus...We think about that human value as including two major components: one is the value we are creating for individuals and the corporations we work with and the other is for society at large.” — Dr. Cheryl FlinkDigital Transformation Defined [14:45 — 15:35]“The ongoing process of strategic renewal that uses advances in digital technologies to build capabilities that refresh or replace an organization's business model, collaborative approach or culture. In other words, you are preparing the organization for the constant disruption of technology.” — Dr. Cheryl FlinkTransitioning to a Human Centered Data Organization [21:25 — 22:04]“You cannot move forward with digital transformation unless there is a transformational mandate. Why are we doing this? If that ‘why' is not clear…the organization is going to flounder. They have to know why in order to create directional alignment and commitment. Alignment is we know how we are going to get there and commitment is we are all going to band together to make this happen.” — Dr. Cheryl FlinkThe Tension Between Business Innovation and Governance [26:00 — 27:25]“When you think about these teams that are innovating, they are rewarded for taking risks...fast release of products. The seamless integration team is rewarded for protecting data...for making sure that what is produced integrates into the current platforms. I have to innovate and I have to have business continuity. So, one of the things that a leader, to create human value, has to do is really create psychological safety...and balance that tension. ” — Dr. Cheryl FlinkAbout Dr. Cheryl FlinkDr. Cheryl Flink is the former Global Vice President for the Center for Creative Leadership. She helped organizations around the globe find new market opportunities, improve revenue and cost drivers and create exceptional customer experiences by linking data, technology and analytics to strategy, product development and business execution.
