Dilip Barman, a passionate advocate for plant-based living, has dedicated his life to transforming the way people view food and nutrition. As president of the Triangle Vegetarian Society, his work has reached thousands, inspiring healthier and more compassionate choices. Beyond his leadership, Dilip is also a Food for Life instructor with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), where he educates communities on the profound health benefits of plant-based eating. His role as Director of Nutrition Education at Central Park School in North Carolina allows him to shape young minds and integrate plant-based principles into educational systems. With boundless energy and an unshakeable commitment, Dilip's work continues to reshape lives through the power of plants. A Journey Rooted in Vegetarianism Dilip's journey began with his parents, who were early immigrants from India. Raised in a vegetarian household, Dilip was introduced to meat as a child, but it was always accompanied by the ritual of washing hands and lips after consumption, reflecting his family's deep-seated cultural beliefs. This early exposure to vegetarianism set the stage for his eventual transition to veganism, driven initially by ethical concerns rather than health reasons. From Vegetarianism to Veganism: The Ethical Shift The transition from vegetarianism to veganism was a gradual process for Dilip. During his college years, a moment of reflection in a grocery store led him to give up meat, but it wasn't until he encountered a vegan Thanksgiving event that he started to seriously consider a fully plant-based diet. The literature and community he encountered there deepened his understanding, eventually leading him to give up dairy, a staple in his family's diet. His journey highlights the challenges and rewards of aligning one's ethical beliefs with dietary choices. Health Benefits: A Personal and Familial Perspective While Dilip's initial motivation for going vegan was ethical, he later observed significant health benefits. He shared anecdotes of how eliminating dairy from his diet led to a dramatic reduction in colds and flus, a benefit he has maintained for over 25 years. Furthermore, Dilip reflected on the health issues faced by his family members, many of whom were heavy dairy consumers. These observations reinforced his commitment to a plant-based lifestyle and his advocacy for others to consider the health benefits of such a diet. Code Blue: Advocating for Plant-Based Medicine Dilip's commitment to plant-based living extends beyond personal practice; he has also played a key role in broader advocacy efforts. As the executive producer of the film "Code Blue," Dilip helped bring to light the potential of a plant-based diet to prevent and reverse chronic diseases. The film follows Dr. Saray Stancic's journey of overcoming multiple sclerosis through a plant-based diet, emphasizing the transformative power of nutrition in managing and reversing serious health conditions. Educating the Next Generation: The Healthy Snack Program In addition to his advocacy work, Dilip has made significant contributions to nutrition education, particularly in schools. Although his role as the Director of Nutrition Education at the Central Park School in Durham, North Carolina, has been dormant since the pandemic, Dilip has successfully implemented the Healthy Snack Program in other schools across the country. This program provides teachers with the tools and resources to offer healthy, plant-based snacks to students, fostering a new generation of informed and healthy eaters. www.HealthScience.org/097-dilip-barman

In 1995, Dr. Saray Stancic was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Within a matter of years she was already reliant on a cane to walk and doctors told her that eventually she would be confined to a wheelchair. Frustrated by her deteriorating health and lack of options, she began doing research on her own. What she discovered was so much more than she could ever have hoped for. By changing her diet and reintroducing exercise, her health returned in dramatic fashion. Today, she no longer needs a cane and is walking freely without assistance. She no longer requires medication and is looking forward a future without a wheelchair! On this episode of The Exam Room™, she joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to share what she learned and how it revolutionized her health! Dr. Stancic also reveals how the same diet and lifestyle changes that she made could eliminate up to 80% of all chronic disease cases, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer! — — — ICNM https://www.pcrm.org/icnm — — — Dr. Saray Stancic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drstancic Website: https://drstancic.com Code Blue: https://geni.us/codeblue What's Missing In Medicine: https://amzn.to/3aYXJU8 — — — Chuck Carroll Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: http://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Barnard Medical Center Appointments https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed 202-527-7500 — — — Physicians Committee Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/physicianscommittee Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PCRM.org Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/pcrm — — — 21-Day Vegan Kickstart App iOS: https://bit.ly/VegKStrt-iOS Android: https://bit.ly/VegKStrtAndrd Web: https://www.pcrm.org/kickstart — — — Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers. To kick off Season 2, I review the first year of my podcast with guest host Jeremy Toffle, M.D. We first talk about my path into medicine then my journey to better health, both of which can be traced back to my upbringing and the passing of my father. We then go into the inspiration behind my podcast, a recap of what it's all about and highlights of some of the memorable moments from this past year. We also briefly discuss some of the difficult challenges I've experienced, both personally and professionally, managing the podcast while working as a hospitalist during the pandemic. We end our talk by looking toward the future of my podcast. Dig deep into the all-encompassing world of Lifestyle Medicine Physician, Dr. Saray Stancic. Her story has a little of everything that will have you on the edge of your seat -- personal trauma and transformation, redemption, discovery, and a passionate pursuit to change not just her health and the health of her patients, but of the healthcare field as a whole. Not a small task, but as you’ll hear, this plant-armored warrior is more than up to the task! In 1995, as a third-year medical resident, Dr. Stancic was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. At the time, it may as well have been a death sentence for this young doctor. This unforeseen health challenge changed the course of her life, both professionally and personally, and Rip and Saray talk about the impact that diagnosis had on her life as well as her “galileo” blueberry moment that ultimately changed the way she viewed her prognosis. Today, over 25 years later, in addition to being a physician, you can also add marathon finisher, filmmaker, and author to her long list of credentials. Her film, “Code Blue” examines the healthcare industry and offers solutions featuring the practice of lifestyle medicine to prevent, treat, and manage disease. And, her new book, What’s Missing From Medicine offers six lifestyle changes to overcome chronic illness, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases like lupus, multiple sclerosis, and many others. (Note: This show first aired back in March.) Our guest on ST Medical Monday is Dr. Saray Stancic. In 1995, she learned that she had multiple sclerosis. By 2003, she was walking regularly with a cane, had stopped nearly all unnecessary physical activity, and was on several medications. Flash forward to 2010, when she ran a marathon.... How'd she do this? It didn't happen overnight, of course, but -- through a series of dedicated lifestyle changes -- it did happen. Dr. Stancic is a lifestyle medicine physician based in New Jersey, and she's also the author of "What's Missing from Medicine: Six Lifestyle Changes to Overcome Chronic Illness." She tells us about this book, and about her own remarkable story, on this edition of our program.

In the first episode of 2021, Dr Stancic, M.D. is a board certified internist and infectious disease specialist whose path during her medical training took a dramatic detour due to a disorder called Multiple Sclerosis (MS). After years of becoming dependent on medications and a walking cane, she had an epiphany in 2003 that inspired her to reclaim her health through profound lifestyle changes. This motivated her to successfully run a marathon in 2010 and even produce a movie in 2019 called Code Blue, which sheds light on the lapses in our healthcare system. Dr. Stancic also discusses her new book entitled, What's Missing from Medicine. As an infectious disease specialist, she discusses how fine tuning your lifestyle choices can help to optimize your immune system to protect against COVID-19. I hope our talk will inspire you to strengthen each of the 6 spokes of your lifestyle wheel of health. Hi, and welcome to my podcast where I engage doctors, scholars, PhD's, registered dietitian and many other experts in their field on topics that gravitate around lifestyle medicine, the power we have to take control of our own health and how our diet and lifestyle factors affect the world around us. The goal is not to tell you the right or wrong thing to do, it's to educate, to expand consciousness to open or illuminate doors you never knew were there to ultimately become a more knowledgeable and healthier person. This connection with my guest Saul Bautista was made through a mutual friend who has now recommended several people for the podcast. It was fun speaking to Saul because he's around my age, he wasn't as intimidating as some of my other high-profile guests and we weren't in a huge hurry to get done by a certain time. We had time to talk organically. In trying to summarize this conversation and the course Saul's life has taken, the word ‘fate' comes to mind. Everything from his time in being with the Army, to his parent's divorce to him getting injured to the signing of the GI Bill, all played a serendipitous role in who he is and where he is right now. Noteworthy talking points include: How his experience in the armed forces shaped who he is today and solidified his decision to go into medicine. His interest in exercise and disease prevention. The Relationship of doctors and lifestyle medicine and the reasons why we don't see more doctors doing this now. The relationship between medicine and medical students, creativity and aversion to risk has on the spread of this idea of lifestyle medicine. We end with talking about his appearance in the much hyped Code Blue film that highlights the lack of nutrition and lifestyle medicine education in med. Schools. It's the brainchild of podcast guest by Dr. Saray Stancic, who was featured on Ep. 32 of the podcast. It's Saul's perspective as a med student and as someone who has a deep understanding of the power of lifestyle medicine that makes this talk unique. Please enjoy our conversation, on Episode #60, with Saul Bautista.
Peter Rezkalla is a third-year medical student at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (USA) and describes himself as a “human, Christian, son, brother, Disney fanatic, friend, medical student, and 'YouTuber'." He has a passion for the arts, more specifically the performing arts, and has always been consumed with its' relation to science. As Peter recounts: "Growing up, I was always captivated by the arts and fascinated with science, but never truly felt either side accepted the other. I succeeded in my academic work with my “smart” friends and then left to choreograph theater work with my “arts” friends. (I use quotation marks because I believe both sides offer ingenuity to the other if they only allow themselves to explore.)” In medical school, Peter was able to channel his artistic talents into several endeavors. He has developed a highly successful Medical Improv course open to students, residents, nurses, and physicians. The course was able to educate people about the value of empathy skills in medicine. Peter had heard many in the medical education community doubt the ability to teach empathic skills, but found through Improv this was definitely not the case. He went on to become his medical school's official videographer and created a video sharing his fellow classmates' compelling acceptance stories, worked on AMA Video Challenges for his colleagues, and was a cameraman for a medical documentary produced by Dr. Saray Stancic titled CodeBlue. During this time Peter also chronicled medical student stories in his medical school through a Humans of NJMS Facebook page. After USMLE Step 1, he had a “reset”, and it allowed him to begin anew in his 3rd year of medical school. This is where he decided to start his YouTube channel: Doctor Disney. Peter recounts why he started his Doctor Disney YouTube Channel: So, I picked up a dream of mine - almost a summation of my prior activities - and started my YouTube channel - Doctor Disney! Today, I am humbled to use medicine to serve, and arts to entertain - two forms of healing humanity. I really just wanted a platform to simultaneously have a creative outlet, share stories, make people laugh, and create a positive impact on our world. Pretty simple.
Happy New Year everyone! If you or someone you know has had a diagnosis of Multiple sclerosis or any autoimmune disorder, this is the episode for you. It took my wife and I a plane, 3 trains and an Uber to get to Dr. Stancic in Ramsay, NJ, but we made it. Dr. Stancic is so great, not only was our conversation fantastic, but she was kind enough to move a patient on her schedule just so we could fit in this interview. The Ian Cramer Podcast is 1 year old and I will continue to bring you conversations with doctors and scholars to make the world a better, healthier place. We've averaged about 1000 listens per episode. Which is great for the first year. We have 15 proud patrons of the podcast, and they deserve a special thank you. And so if I'm doing my math right, that's 1.5% of my listener base. As I've said in the past, this podcast is free and always will be because I feel that this information is too important to withhold from people. But I'd like you all to be aware that for the end listener, it's free, but behind the scenes in reality, it's not. There are many expenses associated with the making and production of the podcast. In the spirit of transparency and greater understanding, allow me to explain. I have a full time job and this podcast is a passionate side hustle. At this point, 100% of what I earn from patron contributions is recycled back into the podcast. So Ian, what do you spend the money on? Good question. First are podcast website hosting fees. I advertise the podcast to get the episodes in front of more eye-balls or in front of more ears, which costs money. I'm also constantly trying to upgrade my equipment to make the production quality better, which costs money. I pay for the software that I use for my Facebook Live sessions and Ask the Doc sessions. Not to mention the time, reading, research and prep that goes into each podcast. Now, if at this point, you're rolling your eyes, I promise to only make this type of extended soap box speech once per year, but I want you to understand that if you're listening to these podcasts, you are a part of this community! And you can play a role in supporting me and my work to progress this message to change the world around us for the better. If you've been listening to this podcast for a period of time and if they add value to your life, if they're educational, or have made you healthier or if you've implemented something into your lifestyle that you've heard from this podcast, ...consider how much that's worth to you and consider supporting the podcast. This is just a friendly reminder, not a order…this is not an ultimatum. On the flip side, there are conditions in which you should not donate. #1- If you don't enjoy it. In which case I would ask you 'Why are you still listening' and #2: If donating would involve making material sacrifices. You must put yourself and your family first. With your support, I'm able to spend more time creating and spreading meaningful content that can positively impact people's lives. Will you help me and those around you become healthier? Dr Saray Stancic became an infectious disease specialist in response to the HIV and hepatitis C crisis of the 1980s and 90s. On October 11, 1995, the then-3rd year medical resident found a short nap window at 2am, and collapsed in fatigue in the on-call room of the hospital where she worked. When she was awakened for her next shift, Dr Stancic couldn't feel her legs. She was rushed to the ER, and an MRI revealed multiple sclerosis (MS) with multiple lesions in the brain and spinal cord. In addition to the neuropathy in her legs, it turned out that her kidneys were also failing. She was admitted to the hospital, given an IV steroid drip and a bunch of other medications. And just like that, a young, energetic, ambitious doctor was converted into a frightened, confused, dispirited patient.
