Hi Warriors! We are dropping this episode early so that you can listen as you travel for Thanksgiving, while you are cooking, or just relaxing. We want you to have all the tools in your toolbox to combat any struggles that can creep up around food and diet culture. The stories we tell ourselves in our head, the indirect messaging, and direct messaging about food can really mess with us. It seems that even those of us who have done the work to heal our relationship with food and our weight can still get triggered. These triggers can happen at any time during the year, but the holiday season is often a time where they are amplified. Dr. Natalie Gentile, Board Certified Family and Lifestyle Medicine Physician and self proclaimed Healthcare Disruptor shares with us some tips on how to take care of our mind and body this holiday season. Dr. Natalie is a wealth of knowledge and has such a unique perspective as someone who is a Weight Neutral Direct Primary Care Provider. Sarah and I learned so much in this conversation. We will be taking these tips with us into all the festivities over the next two months and hope you find some that resonated with you too. Remember to Stay Wild and Weird Warriors, and take care of yourself this holiday season. Xo, Amy & Sarah Find all things UTI here. Have a story to share? Contact us here. Episode 133: Dr. Adelola Ashaye of InTouch Primary Care - Sugar Land, TXDr. Adelola Ashaye is a Board Certified Family Physician and Lifestyle Medicine Physician. Her interest in the medical field was first sparked when she was in high school, by her observation of a patient-doctor relationship. Many years have passed since that interaction which took place at Alpena General Hospital in Michigan, and it is the desire to build and maintain meaningful long-lasting relationships that continues to draw her to medicine. After graduating high school, she went on to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where she obtained a B.S. in Cognitive Science and Biopsychology. Then, she graduated from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago IL with a Medical Degree. She completed her residency in 2010 at MacNeal Family Medicine Residency, affiliated with the University of Chicago IL.In this episode...Dr. Ashaye reveals that her experiences with patients receiving inadequate care led her to question her purpose in medicine. She felt frustrated by the lack of effective follow-up and wanted to make a more significant impact. Discovering the Direct Primary Care model aligned with her vision of providing better care based on relationships and patient choice, regardless of insurance status or employment. She acknowledges the limitations of fee-for-service care, where patients' insurance changes or losses can disrupt continuity. The Direct Primary Care model offered a solution that allowed her to provide the type of care she had envisioned when she became a doctor.---------------------LISTENER'S GUIDE!NEW TO THE POD? We are going to tell you something that you already know. Our lives are made up of many different parts and each of us is quite different. It just stands to reason that the way we approach our overall health should be just as unique. Our modern healthcare system can sometimes get labeled as impersonal, quick to rely on pharmaceutical treatments, and a bit “cookie cutter.”Enter the growing area of the healthcare world called Lifestyle Medicine, which is proving to be an elemental route to better health and well-being. This medical specialty emphasizes behavioral changes as a primary treatment for disease. It is often referred to as “whole-person care,” organizing behavior modifications into six pillars, including: a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections. This model is designed to provide effective prevention of chronic negative lifestyle conditions. If you are human, like us, you could benefit from attention in at least one (or all) of those areas. Welcome to Episode Seven of The Nature of Wellness Podcast. On today's episode, we sat down with Dr. Melissa Sundermann, a plant-based physician who has been practicing medicine for over 20 years. She is double-board certified in both Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine, and has completed professional training in Mind-Body Medicine through the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC. She has been featured in multiple Lifestyle Medicine articles and podcasts as well as being an invited speaker for several health/medical national conferences. Dr. Sundermann strongly believes in fostering a partnership with her patients and helping to guide them towards a healing pathway through self-care. She utilizes the six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine, while adding a seventh-daily exposure to nature and fresh air (WE LOVE THIS). She recently joined the staff of Canyon Ranch Wellness Resort in Lenox, MA as their Lifestyle Medicine Physician. She does her best to practice what she preaches and enjoys running, biking, hiking, skiing and spending time outdoors and creating adventures with her family. If your New Year's goal was to be healthier, then this episode is JUST what the Doctor ordered. Please subscribe and leave a review anywhere you listen to this podcast. In today's very special launch episode, airing on World Menopause Day, I'm delighted to welcome to the show Dr Shashi Prasad. Dr Shashi Prasad is an experienced GP, British Medical Society accredited Advanced Menopause Specialist, a member of the British and International Menopause Societies, and a certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician. She is passionate about providing evidence-based menopause care and combines Hormone Replacement Therapy with Lifestyle Modifications to help transform the lives of her clients, balance their hormones and make them feel like their best selves. Now, you might be wondering why this topic is related to happiness habits - it's a topic that's very close to my heart because during the height of the Covid pandemic I started experiencing perimenopause symptoms myself. Not knowing why I was feeling the way I did, I started to spiral downward - I'm sure that if I'd known more about perimenopause and menopause at the time I would have put two and two together more quickly than I did. Thankfully there is more awareness about this natural but often challenging season of our lives now, and because I'm still a huge believer in us sharing our own stories to help others, I've written a brand new chapter about my experiences for the second edition of my book The Happiness Habits Transformation which I'm excited to share is coming out next year. Dr Shashi contributed to this chapter and I'm delighted to welcome her to the show today for what I'm hoping will be a sort of Menopause 101, answering some of the questions that I had when I started this journey in the hope that it helps you with yours. Please be aware that in this episode we discuss a lot of perimenopause symptoms including the impact on body functions and sexual libido so if you're of a nervous disposition, you've been warned! Now, while you're listening today, think about how you can take what you learn and put it into practice. Take action in any way that's meaningful for you. As always you'll find the links and details of today's show and all the other shows in this series at my new website michellereeveswrites.com/podcast

Many fitness professionals tend to think in quite narrow terms about movement and physical activity. Firstly, the image that comes to mind for many of us is typically something exercise-related, rather than just any form of enjoyable movement (think lifting weight versus dancing or gardening). Secondly, the environment this movement is performed in is most often a health/fitness club or gym. While this approach is not wrong in the least, it is clear that it only resonates with out 20% of our population. A broader perspective on movement, and where it is performed, could go a long way to engaging a much larger segment of the population. This broader perspective is exactly the focus of our discussion in episode 57 with Dr. Melissa Sundermann. Dr. Sundermann is a Lifestyle Medicine Physician as well as accomplished endurance athlete and ultra-marathoner. Her unique perspective on medicine and treatment of chronic disease brings together two of her passions: movement and being outdoors. As we'll discuss in this conversation broadening our language to include the term movement makes physical activity more approachable for the many non-exercisers in the population. Furthermore, being outdoors confers specific health benefits, not achieved while spending time indoors. As Dr. Sundermann points out the combination of movement and being outdoors can really amplify the effect on overall health and wellbeing. Dr. Sundermann's energy and passion for this topic is abundantly clear from the beginning of our chat to the very end. More importantly she provides an important perspective on how fitness professionals can engage a broader segment of our population, and do so in a way that makes physical activity more approachable, inclusive, and enjoyable. This is definitely a perspective shifting conversation that should be enjoyed while taking a nice, brisk, walk outdoors.Show Notes Page: https://www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/podcast/episode/57 Our Guest: Dr. Melissa SundermannDr. Melissa Sundermann is a plant-based physician double board certified in both Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine and has been practicing medicine for over 20 years. She has been featured in several Lifestyle Medicine articles and podcasts as well as an invited speaker for health/medical national conferences. Her 7 pillars of health include a wholefood/plant-based diet, daily movement, restorative sleep, avoidance of risky behaviors (such as tobacco, excessive alcohol, drug use), stress management, social connection and daily exposure to nature and fresh air. Many cancers can be cured if detected early and treated effectively. Studies have shown that an anti-cancer diet is an important strategy you can use to reduce your risk of cancer. Dr. Shireen Kassam co-founded Plant-Based Health Online, the UK's first online lifestyle medicine service, and Plant-Based Health UK, a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate health professionals on the benefits of whole food plant-based nutrition. Dig deep into the all-encompassing world of Lifestyle Medicine Physician, Dr. Saray Stancic. Her story has a little of everything that will have you on the edge of your seat -- personal trauma and transformation, redemption, discovery, and a passionate pursuit to change not just her health and the health of her patients, but of the healthcare field as a whole. Not a small task, but as you’ll hear, this plant-armored warrior is more than up to the task! In 1995, as a third-year medical resident, Dr. Stancic was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. At the time, it may as well have been a death sentence for this young doctor. This unforeseen health challenge changed the course of her life, both professionally and personally, and Rip and Saray talk about the impact that diagnosis had on her life as well as her “galileo” blueberry moment that ultimately changed the way she viewed her prognosis. Today, over 25 years later, in addition to being a physician, you can also add marathon finisher, filmmaker, and author to her long list of credentials. Her film, “Code Blue” examines the healthcare industry and offers solutions featuring the practice of lifestyle medicine to prevent, treat, and manage disease. And, her new book, What’s Missing From Medicine offers six lifestyle changes to overcome chronic illness, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases like lupus, multiple sclerosis, and many others.
