SHOW NOTES: Today, discover how to protect your pipes during the busy holiday season, get expert advice on choosing the perfect paint sheen for your project, and learn how to quickly upgrade your outdoor space with custom stone features. Plus, we're answering your questions on all things home improvement, from minor fixes to major makeovers! - Plumbing: Don't make these common mistakes during the holiday plumbing disaster season. - Paint: Besides picking the perfect paint color, you need to choose the right sheen that shines. - Stone Features: Customize your outdoor space with easy DIY building block kits.   Q & A: - Lighting: Donna can't get the lights over her kitchen island to hang straight. She'll need to readjust the rods that go into the junction box in the ceiling. - Safe Installation: Richard wants to install a safe in the concrete foundation floor. Bolting the safe to the concrete instead avoids the risk of any electrical or plumbing damage. - Vent Fan: There is no vent fan in the bathroom, mold on the ceiling, and the window is painted shut. Diane gets advice on running a duct through the wall and installing a humidistat. - HVAC: Robert has electric baseboard heat and good insulation, but high energy bills. Installing a heat pump would be challenging but less expensive to run. - Roof Moss: What size copper flashing would prevent moss on a roof? Sunlight is the best mildewcide, but Sue could use 8” copper flashing on each side of the roof ridge. - Insulation: What is the best way to insulate a new house? Chandler can install spray foam insulation in the entire attic without any risk of shortening the roof shingle life. - Window Repair: Should rotted window sills be repaired or replaced? Kaitlyn can fill the rotted areas with wood epoxy, but replacing exterior sills is not that hard to do. - Electrical: Russ has an LED light fixture that flickers when the hot water comes on. The water heater is pulling electricity from the system and making the light voltage drop.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? We'd love to help! In the latest episode of the Veg Grower Podcast, host Richard and Chef Scott delve into the intricacies of summer gardening and the joys of using fresh produce in culinary creations. Richard shares his wealth of knowledge on managing summer crops, finding and caring for bargain plants, and ensuring the well-being of plants and livestock during holidays. Chef Scott complements this with a delectable recipe for Vietnamese salad rolls, showcasing the versatility of garden-fresh ingredients. Tending to Summer Crops: Essential Gardening Tips for a Bountiful Harvest Maintaining Moisture LevelsOne of the primary challenges Richard discusses is keeping the ground moist during the hot summer months. This is crucial for preventing bolting in brassicas like cabbages and cauliflowers. Bolting occurs when plants prematurely flower and go to seed, often due to stress from inadequate moisture. Actionable Tips:Mulching:** Apply a layer of organic mulch around your plants to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.Consistent Watering:** Water your plants early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize evaporation. Use a soaker hose or drip irrigation system for efficient water delivery.Rainwater Harvesting:** Collect rainwater in barrels to use during dry spells, reducing reliance on tap water. Monitoring for Potato BlightPotato blight is a common issue that can devastate crops if not managed properly. Richard emphasizes the importance of vigilance and timely intervention. Actionable Tips:Regular Inspections:** Check your potato plants regularly for signs of blight, such as dark spots on leaves and stems.Proper Spacing:** Ensure adequate spacing between plants to improve air circulation and reduce humidity, which can exacerbate blight.Preventative Sprays:** Use organic fungicides or copper-based sprays as a preventative measure, especially during wet weather. Thinning and Pruning Fruit TreesThinning apple trees and pruning cherry trees are essential tasks for promoting better fruit production and preventing disease. Actionable Tips:Thinning Apples:** Remove excess fruit to ensure the remaining apples grow larger and healthier. Aim for one fruit per cluster.Summer Pruning:** Prune cherry trees in the summer to reduce the risk of disease. Focus on removing dead or diseased branches and improving the tree's shape. Bargain Plants: Finding and Caring for Discounted Treasures Richard shares his experience of finding bargain plants at garden centre's and offers tips on how to care for them to ensure successful growth. Actionable Tips:Inspect Before Buying:** Check for signs of disease, pests, and overall plant health. Avoid plants with yellowing leaves or stunted growth.Acclimatization:** Gradually acclimate bargain plants to their new environment by placing them in a shaded area before moving them to their final location.Soil Preparation:** Ensure the planting area is well-prepared with nutrient-rich soil and proper drainage. Managing Your Garden and Livestock While on Holiday Richard provides valuable insights into how he manages his garden and livestock during holidays, emphasizing the importance of planning and cooperation. Pre-Holiday PreparationsActionable Tips:Weeding:** Thoroughly weed your garden before leaving to reduce competition for water and nutrients.Watering Systems:** Set up automatic watering systems, such as drip irrigation or soaker hoses, to ensure consistent moisture levels.Rainwater Utilization:** Use rainwater harvesting systems to supplement your watering needs. Enlisting HelpActionable Tips:House-Sitting:** Arrange for a trusted friend or family member to house-sit and care for your livestock, ensuring they have adequate food and water.Neighbour Cooperation:** Collaborate with allotment neighbours to look after each other's plants, creating a supportive community network. Today, we are sitting down with Evan Wisheropp, a part-time professional photographer with a full-time passion for climbing.Evan's climbing journey began like many of ours—in a gym. From there, he explored various climbing disciplines until he found his true passions: desert offwidths and route development.Off-width climbing, takes Evan  to Indian Creek and Moab, Utah, every year to tackle massive desert offwidth splitters. His latest project, The Cleaver, a 13b offwidth roof Evan spotted while scouting…. After several failed attempts, he handed the first ascent to the Wide Boyz but returned the next season to redpoint the route and film a short documentary about the experience. When he is not suffering up desert offwidths Evan spends his time climbing and developing new routes in the Northwest region of California. He began developing routes back in 2014. Since then, he has created an impressive 4,775 routes. Over the past nine years, Evan has personally invested nearly $60,000 to develop the limestone crags of Northern California. Many of these areas remain largely unknown to the public, offering hundreds of cleaned, bolted classic routes with only a handful of ascents. This conversation is split into two parts. First, we'll journey back in time to explore how Evan became the climber he is today. We'll dive into three traumatic climbing accidents that shaped his progression, his relationship with trad gear, and his perspective on taking risks. Our conversation reminds us how dangerous climbing can be, but more importantly, how we can learn and grow from our mistakes and still recover a deep passion for climbing and the outdoors. ----Don't forget to check our our full video episodes on Youtube! The TCM movement is growing but we need your help to spread the word! Increase Blog Revenue By Bolting On A Newsletter Business with Craig Schoolkate

Have less traffic on your blog? No problem! You can still earn more money through a newsletter. In today's episode, Jaryd Krause is joined by the dynamic Craig Schoolkate. So, get ready for insights on ramping up your blog revenue through the power of the newsletter business.  Craig developed his copywriting skills under Quinn Zeda at Zeda Labs. While at Empire Flippers, he found a passion for newsletters and successfully built one with 60,000 readers, boasting impressive engagement statistics. Currently, he authors the Growth Memo and oversees the growth of several newsletters, reaching a combined audience of over 89,000 entrepreneurs and marketers. Jaryd and Craig dive into starting  a newsletter. Why should every business have a newsletter (not just for extra money but for far more important reasons)? How do you grow a newsletter? What metrics should you track and how? And what email service provider (ESP) can you use? They also discuss building a brand within the newsletter. How can you make your newsletter and blog magnetic so that people will come to you with advertising dollars and opportunities?  Lastly, Craig shares the 3-legged marketing stool. This is so valuable; businesses should know how this works and incorporate it into their strategy. It's a game-changing episode you won't want to miss! Tune in now and generate more money for your online business.    Episode Highlights 04:08  Craig's journey into copywriting and online entrepreneurship 12:02  How do you transform relationships into business success?  23:32  Unlocking your potential and monetizing your email list as a blogger  30:03  The art of value-centric growth and monetization  44:43  What are the best strategies to optimize a newsletter?    Key Takeaways ➥ According to Craig, an email list is considered the most important business asset. He goes so far as to state that if a business doesn't have an email list, it may not be considered a true business. The rationale behind this assertion is that an email list provides a consistent and engaged audience to whom products can be sold or who can be directed to the business's website. ➥ Craig promotes a shift from a competitive mindset to a collaborative one. Instead of viewing other businesses as competitors to be surpassed, he encourages businesses to see the potential for collaboration and abundance for everyone involved. This approach involves thinking about what can be given to the audience rather than what can be taken. ➥ To successfully monetize a newsletter, Craig recommends first defining a unique value proposition that sets the content apart. Subsequently, he emphasizes the importance of a testing phase with a small audience, gathering feedback, and refining the content based on responses. Adopting a long-term approach, he suggests building healthy metrics, such as achieving 50% or more open rates and minimizing unsubscribes to less than 1%, before considering monetization strategies. One of the primary methods he highlights is the introduction of sponsorships, but he suggests waiting until the newsletter is well-established and exhibits robust engagement. The quality and engagement of the content play a crucial role in attracting sponsors and retaining subscribers for successful long-term monetization.   About The Guest Craig Schoolkate was nurtured into the craft of copywriting by Quinn Zeda, founder of a left-field CRO agency called Zeda Labs. When he moved on to Empire Flippers, he discovered his love for newsletters. He built the Empire Flippers newsletter, which had 60,000 readers, a 53.5% average open rate, and 96%+ of the audience read the entire email every week. Now, he writes the Growth Memo and leads the growth of multiple newsletters with a total audience size of 89,000+ entrepreneurs and marketers.   Connect with Craig Schoolkate  ➥ Craig's Website - https://www.hitnewsletters.co/ ➥ Everything You Need to Know About Newsletters - https://bit.ly/3OmYIhH ➥ Reach Craig at - Craig@hitnewsletters.com   Resource Links ➥ Sell your business to us here - https://www.buyingonlinebusinesses.co/sellyourbusiness ➥ Buying Online Businesses Website - https://buyingonlinebusinesses.com ➥ Download the Due Diligence Framework - https://buyingonlinebusinesses.com/freeresources/ ➥ Active Campaign - https://bit.ly/3DCwYQH ➥ Convert Kit - https://bit.ly/3o10Xgx ➥ Substack - https://substack.com/ ➥ Beehiiv - https://www.beehiiv.com/ ➥ Passionfroot - https://www.passionfroot.me/

Complexity   Identity Credentials and Access Management  (ICAM)      Toxic Combinations Napoleon Hill once said that a goal is a dream with a deadline.  When it comes to the federal transition to Zero Trust Architecture, the Office of Management and Budget outlines a path for implementing zero-trust architecture by 2024.  Today's discussion gives federal practitioners terrific guidelines on how to accomplish that noble goal. The group is a wonderful mix of federal experience, innovative leaders, and experts who were part of many initial network specifications.  During the discussion three topics were obvious:  how to manage complexity, identity, and unexpected combinations. Complexity During an exchange about “shiny new things” that seem to trap system managers, Josh Brodbent made a fantastic observation when he stated that complexity doesn't always mean effectiveness.  Drilling deeper into the concept of new technology, Frank Bruglio suggests some people will purchase a “shiny new toy” for the sole reason to check a box on a compliance requirement.  ICAM Bryan Rosensteel has spent his career in the world of federal identity management.  His experience leads him to believe that to fulfill the desired transition to zero-trust architecture, application developers must be taken into consideration. His point is simple, if ICAM isn't a part of application development, how can they assure that it will be compliant?  Bolting on compliance brings about delays and unneeded code revisions.  Bryan expands on this concept with his thoughts on abstract authentication and centralized structures. Toxic Combinations Frank Briguglio reminds us that managing Identity Credentials and Access Management must be understood at a much deeper level.  In the discussion, he revives the phrase “toxic combinations.”  This is a reference to granting privileges to users that can create risks in unexpected ways. Automation has its limits, and humans must be part of the package when a federal agency commits to zero-trust-architecture.

Bolting a 4000+hp twin turbo V8-powered drag car onto a dyno and pushing it to its limits isn't for the faint of heart, but it's just another day in the office for this week's guest, Anderson Dick of FuelTech USA.Use “FUELTECH100” for $100 off our HPA Tuning Starter package here: https://hpcdmy.co/starterbFounding FuelTech 20 years ago as an electrical engineering student in Brazil, Anderson started from absolute scratch with very little support and no other ECU products on hand to even take inspiration from. The problem, as Anderson explains in this episode, was that extremely strict import regulations put the Brazillian motorsport scene a good couple of decades behind the rest of the world — so much so that enthusiasts were pulling EFI systems off cars and fitting carburettors in order to run forced induction. If that sounds backwards to you, Anderson doesn't disagree, and took it upon himself to create what was then a very simple programmable EFI computer to try and bring his country into the 21st century. Two decades later and FuelTech is a leader in the EFI management space, especially when it comes to extremely high horsepower drag applications. So, after Anderson talks us through the very early days of his career and the unique challenges he came up against, the conversation naturally moves to tuning big power cars. Petrol vs Ethanol vs Methanol tuning, Inductive vs CDI ignition systems, reading spark plugs, and much, much is covered in this fascinating episode. If you want to pick up some new tuning knowledge from one of the best in the industry (we certainly did), this is one episode you won't want to miss. The brassica family includes cole crops, descendants of the mustard family and wild cabbages. This includes broccoli, cauliflower, romanesco, kale, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and collards.(cabbage is actually a member of the mustard family- but we lump it into brassicas!)Soil and TemperatureThese crops prefer well drained soil, kept moist. The seeds require slight warmth to germinate at 65 degrees Fahrenheit or more, but prefer to grow in cool conditions. If grown in peak summer, and not provided with cooling shade, they'll bolt. Bolting means going to seed, or sending up flower heads before a true crop is produced for harvest.Tip: Know your growing environment! If your temperatures where you are seeding stay in the 60-70 range you may not need any bottom heat for germination. If you do use heat mats (and we do!) just remember to remove the trays when you have germination. Forgetting to do so can contribute to weak and leggy seedlings. When to Sow and TransplantSow 6-8 weeks before last date of frost in seed trays. Direct sow when temperatures are warmer. Can be transplanted out three to two weeks before last frost date when left unprotected. If row cover or a hoop house is provided, can transplant into the garden much earlier.Tip: Grow where you have NOT grown like crops in the past couple of years- this goes for the whole brassica family. It is safe to generalize the statement that brassicas want a soil pH of about 6-7.Tip: I have found over the years that crops like broccoli and cabbage enjoy a little “extra love” when the plants are in your garden and roughly 4-5 inches tall. We side dress with some well aged compost. Growing and HarvestingHarvest broccoli and cauliflower when heads reach roughly 5” across, variety dependent. To blanch cauliflower heads, tie the leaves residing directly below the head together above the crown. This will blanch the cauliflower for a whiter color. According to some folks, as brussels sprouts grow, leaves can be pruned off to allow more sunlight to reach the small cabbage heads along the stalk. This is said to increase sprout size. Cabbage should be harvested before the head splits, usually at around 6” in size (again variety dependent).KaleNote the kale experiment PerennialTroubleshooting: Any damage (usually pest related or rough handling when removing pests) to the central growing point can lead to a stunted or no head growth. The outer leaves will still grow so it may seem “okay” but they too will be tough and non-edible. Perennial choices exist for brassicas:Angela purchases her's here: https://plantingjustice.org/product-category/perennial-tree-kales-collards/9 Star Broccoli (bushing growth habit and is white like cauliflower)Tree CollardsWalking Stick KaleDaubenton's KaleKosmik Perennial KalePests: Slugs, snails, cabbage mothsTo deter cabbage moths, use row cover before moths appear throughout the growing season-Companion planting broccoli with garlic, chives and nasturtium helps to deter cabbage moths. Plant thickly.Mulching the garden is great but leave a small bit of soil exposed around the stem of brassicas to avoid slug and snail accessTip: Spend 10 minutes a day with a morning tea or coffee and pick off any cabbage worms (small green worm like terrible creatures) and dispose. We also like to keep a butterfly net in garden storage to catch any you miss!

I don't know about you but when I first started climbing..creating a first ascent and developing a route was something my regular climbing partner and I would fantasize about—looking out the car window on long road trips for any rock formation that might have been untouched, a prize yet to be claimed. However, like most of you, I am sure, I was too enthralled in actually climbing to take the time, money, and focus to become a route developer. With climbing being so accessible, and there being over fifty thousand published routes on Mountain Project between California and Canada alone, it is easy to just enjoy climbs and forget all the work it took to establish them. Today, our topic is route development and we get to sit down with a local climber and route developer here in Reno, his name is Colby Wangler. In our conversation, we talk about how Colby found climbing and what lead him to become a route developer, the ins and out of the route developing process, and how Colby both developed and climbed his first own 5.13. We cover how we, the majority, the people who get enjoy the work of others, can support, maintain, and give back to the areas we love so much. And finally, we talk about a potential dark side to this amazing sport we call climbing. Please rate, review the show, and share this podcast with your friends. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio to talk more about the huge news that both USC and UCLA will be leaving the Pac-12 conference and joining the Big Ten conference starting in 2024. This week they are joined by Fox Sports media personality and USC superfan Colin Cowherd to talk about this huge move and what it means for the Trojans going forward. It's been five days since the news broke and the entire college football world is still in shock, trying to make sense of this huge power shift and trying to figure out what will be the next domino to fall. Notre Dame appears to be the next Big Ten target and until the Irish make a move it is unlikely that the SEC of B1G will do any more raiding. But that won't stop the Pac-12, Big 12 and ACC from potentially making some moves, anything from raiding each other to merging together to forming a more formal (and written) alliance. There are already reports that Oregon and Washington want to join USC and UCLA in the Big Ten, but do the LA schools want that? The Big 12 is also reportedly having meetings with the Arizona and Mountain schools from the Pac-12 which would essentially be a death blow to the Conference of Champions. New Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff isn't going to sit idly by, but will there be any conference left for him to save? We shall see. If you have a question for Ryan and Chris you can drop them an email at podcast@uscfootball.com. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Nick talks about one of the most important core principles in private equity, one that helps to create high-value businesses - multiple arbitrage. As Nick explains, if you can fully understand the principle, it can lead to a life-changing exit, and will endow you with the experience and knowledge to hold effective conversations with potential business purchasers. KEY TAKEAWAYS  Multiple arbitrage is the increasing of value of a company between buying and selling, absent of any operational improvements. Bolting on businesses to a smaller concern can help to grow size. As it increases in size and value, you create a multiple arbitrage strategy. If a bigger company has a higher value, and you are bringing a smaller value company in, the value of the bigger company instantly increases.
