“My most powerful content is when I lead with my voice as a mom because I have the same concerns about keeping my kids safe as my audience does. It's a powerful and effective way to find common ground with people,” says Dr. Jess Steier, a popular public health scientist and science communicator seeking to bridge divides and foster trust through empathetic, evidence-based communication. Dr. Steier has several platforms from which to do this work, including Unbiased Science -- a communication hub that uses multiple social media platforms and other communications channels to share validated health and science information -- and as executive director of the Science Literacy Lab, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reaching a diverse audience seeking clarity and reliable information on scientific topics. “The science is less than half the battle,” she explains. “It's about how to communicate with empathy.”Join Raise the Line host Lindsey Smith for a valuable conversation that explores:What sources Dr. Steier relies on to validate informationHow she uses “escape room” exercises to train clinicians on empathetic communicationWhy tailored, story-driven messages reach audiences more effectively than facts.Mentioned in this episode:Unbiased Science If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. Many things we once widely accepted as true and considered non-controversial galvanize intense debates.Leaders are often advised to stay neutral, to not get political when these issues come up in their organizations.Of course leaders should be mindful of what they discuss, how, and with whom. But that isn't the same as being apolitical or neutral. In fact, our collective discomfort with being political often has less to do with neutrality and more to do with avoiding discomfort or even silencing conversations outright. When leaders stifle discussions because they fear losing control, that's not neutrality, that's avoidance. And avoidance doesn't make a space safe; it makes it fragile. As leaders of teams from different backgrounds, lived experiences, and viewpoints, it is neither responsible nor possible to be truly neutral. But what we can do is create cultures of openness, generosity, and meaningful discussion. And in a time when science, health, food security, education, and mental well-being are being politicized, it's essential. In the second part of this series on science communication, my guest is an incredible leader, scientist, and science communicator. She shares critical reflections on what we can do to fight misinformation, regardless of our training and expertise.Jessica Steier, DrPH, PMP is a public health scientist, advocate, science communicator, and Co-Founder and CEO of Unbiased Science. In this episode, host Dr. Christina Madison interviews Jessica Steier, DrPH, PMP, CEO of Vital Statistics Consulting, and the founder and CEO of Unbiased Science, on her journey in public health and entrepreneurship. In a period of misinformation and disinformation, both Madison and Steier discuss the importance of creating informed, evidence-based decisions within health care. Key Takeaways: Data-Based and Evidence-Informed Decisions: Using her podcast, Unbiased Science, Dr. Jessica Steier explains that she doesn't intend to tell people what scientific opinions to have. Instead, she encourages listeners to use data and factual information to create their own evidence-based decisions to avoid falling for misinformation and disinformation. Misinformation Versus Disinformation: Dr. Steier explains that the difference in these terms revolves around intent. Misinformation refers to the unintentional spreading of inaccurate information, whereas disinformation is the intentional spread of false information. Dr. Steier also highlights a study conducted by the Center for Countering Digital Hate which found 12 people were responsible for the bulk of disinformation surrounding vaccines. The Benefits of Social Media: Although social media has been harmful in spreading misinformation and disinformation, Dr. Steier and Dr. Christina Madison discuss how it has been beneficial in emphasizing previously underdiscussed topics. As an example, they note the pain that women experience during IUD insertion, and how the mass discussion of that topic has encouraged health care practices to begin offering solutions and additional education. Our kids have all types of feelings and emotions, and they may not yet know how to process those feelings and regulate their emotions. This can result in temper tantrums, yelling, crying, stealing, and expressing a wide array of behaviors that tend to drive us crazy as parents. So what is our children's bad behavior REALLY trying to tell us? When kids act out, they are telling us that they have deep and strong emotions. They need to be heard; they need to have their feelings acknowledged and validated. They need us, as parents, to remain calm and in control, because when we are calm and in control, we make them feel safe. We need to be present for our children in a loving way, even when we set boundaries for them. We can let them know that they are not able to do something, while at the same time showing then compassion and empathy. Emunah Steier, a psychiatrist, therapist, and mother of 3, who is passionate about family communication, shares the following tips for parents: 1. We need to cultivate our consciousness that our kids are innately good; they are precious, holy souls that were hand picked specifically for us to parent. We don't always know what is going on inside of them that causes them to behave a certain way, and we need to connect with them to open a dialogue so that they can share their thoughts and feelings with us. 2. We need to let our children know that ALL feelings are ok. Certain behaviors are not ok, but all feelings are acceptable. 3. When our children do something to trigger us, we need to realize that it's not really them who is triggering us; it's something that already exists within us that is being triggered. We then need to take some time to sit with ourselves and explore what it is inside of us that we need to address and heal. Throughout our conversation, Emunah shares many examples and relatable personal stories that show how we can address "bad" behavior with our good kids, while judging them favorably. Algorithms. Shortened attention spans. Competition from uncredentialed influencers. In communicating science, even the best in the industry may occasionally fall prey to the siren song of sensationalism in an effort to deliver evidence-based information. Dr. Jess Steier, creator of Unbiased Science, emphasizes the importance of nuance in science communication and resisting the urge to make absolute statements, as very few things in the world are black and white. However, Dr. Steier notes that this is a challenge on social media. She has learned that communicating science in social media requires a balance between sharing credible nuance and capturing people's attention. She's found that her more recent posts, which have a different tone and contain more nuance, are less popular because they don't elicit the same emotional response as her past posts. However, she feels strongly about upholding scientific integrity while still communicating empathetically. She also recognizes that the algorithm rewards more absolutist views. She highlights that meeting people where they are is crucial to communicating science effectively, but how do RDs handle subjects such as genetic modification, CRISPR, and pesticides when other supposedly science-based professional groups spread misinformation? Listen in for Dr. Steier's insights and how she personally shops for herself and her family. We love our scicomm episodes, because they really dig into the material heart of the conflicts this project tries to understand. What is this information chaos tearing apart public health? How do you push back against it? What does “follow the science” mean to the average voter? And how do we push back against influencers who exploit the difficulties of science and the reasonable fear that erupts when a virus is on the loose? One answer is that we produce the best content we can, and our guests today, Drs Andrea Love and Jessica Steier have the chops. Like us, they started the popular “Unbiased Science” podcast during the pandemic in the midst of a tsunami of confusion. Only they come at it from within the sciences: Andrea is an immunologist and biologist who specializes in infectious diseases immunology, cancer immunology, and autoimmunity, while Jessica is a public health scientist who has designed and led multiple COVID-19 related research and science communication projects. This week, they tell Derek why the new COVID boosters are important, discuss the challenges of science communication in an age of misinformation, and confirm that colloidal silver and essential oils are not, in fact, immune boosters. The origin story of Unbiased Science began with the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Jessica Steier and Dr. Andrea Love realized that their friends and family were reaching out to them to make sense of all the information that was being hurled at them in terms of headlines. They were individually educating their networks, but then they decided to join forces and create Unbiased Science. The podcast was formalized after they did some joint Facebook lives and Instagram lives for their networks, and people commented on their chemistry and how comprehensively they were covering these topics. Unbiased Science provides a framework for thinking about how to approach information and misinformation. They cover a wide range of topics, including vaccines, COVID-19, nutrition, mental health, and more. They aim to provide evidence-based information and to debunk myths and misconceptions. They also provide tips on how to evaluate sources of information and how to be critical consumers of information. This episode is sponsored by Doc2Doc Lending. There are over 1.8 million nonprofits in the United States. Tens of thousands of new nonprofits are launched every year, and tens of thousands fail. With 10% of the U.S. workforce employed in nonprofits, I thought I would use my experience with HomeBase Youth Services to examine what it is like to found a nonprofit, the role of a nonprofit Board of Directors, and how mature nonprofits grow and embed themselves in communities. My guest for this first episode in the series is Dan Minton. Dan was the first Executive Director of HomeBase, a position that came with very little pay and a lot of heartache. Today, Dan is the Associate Vice President of The Steier Group, a national firm that assists nonprofits with fundraising and capital campaigns. More information about Dan, The Steier group, and HomeBase Youth Services, is available at www.TalkingAboutKids.com.

Navigating the employer employee relationship can be tough. I believe we often want our employees to succeed more than they want to succeed themselves. With those wishes we often times put ourselves in a bad position by advancing pay, allowing absences, or just going above and beyond for them when we know there will be no thanks or return on the investment.John Steier is the owner of Steier Flooring in Algona, Iowa, a certified flooring installer, and an 18 year veteran of the floor covering industry. Through the years John has built up his business to needing help, whether they be subs or employees, it hasn't always worked out well.
