Boul God records is a Philadelphia-based bizarre music label that traffics in all manner of surreal and mind-bending contemporary styles of music. From the cavernous, early Death in June influenced post-punk/neofolk of Gorseddd FM, to the disorienting blend of head fucked techno and garbled BM vocals of Grail Wizard, to the brutal and frightening electronics of Incluse, to the dadaist, Kiwi-influenced fucked guitar pop of Flying Mausoleum , Boul God is less concerned with genre than it is the cultivation of an AESTHETIC and an atmosphere. You see, underground labels function best when they are approached as conceptual art projects. The best underground labels — Siltbreeze, Harbinger, Bunker Records, Darker than Black, Hospital Productions — understand this, and when we think of them we think of a certain aesthetic. Boul God is establishing itself upon that list. The anonymous curator/owner/auteur of Boul God joins us here to discuss the label, his own personal taste, covering the Grateful Dead, and the decline of the music scene in his home city of Philly. PATREON LINK SOUNDTRACK: Flying Mausoleum "Wiking in Scotch Ghetto" Grail Wizard "The Werewolf Call" Incluse "Thousands of Intelligent Reliable..." Gorseddd FM "The Promise of Rot" Bizarre Carnival "Ketamine Death" LINKS: Boul God at Bandcamp Boul God at Big Cartel Dirk Kolk at Youtube

Your last ever recommended listening is a far too obscure 90's underground rock gem and a Mike James all-time fave, the full length "Doomsday Rock" by Brother JT & Vibrolux released in 1996 on Siltbreeze (for the CD only pressing) and also on Bedlam (for the vinyl only edition with the Jesus and B-17 Bombers album cover, y'all!)...SO GREAT!

On today's episode, I talk to musician Bill Orcutt. Originally from Miami, Florida, Bill made films and played music in various groups before co-founding the noise rock group Harry Pussy in the early '90s with his then-wife Adris Hoyos. After releasing a number of albums and EPs on labels like Siltbreeze, the group broke up and Bill moved to San Francisco to focus on filmmaking and other endeavors. In 2009, he began making music publicly again, and in the last 13 years, has produced a number of incredible experimental albums. His latest, Music for Four Guitars, was just released back in September, and it's wonderful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

We listen to Dancer Equired from the shitgaze pioneers, Times New Viking. Their last full length release on Merge Records takes all the hiss and blown out peaking guitar, drum and vocals and squeezes it into their dense pop style. Matt actually got to hang out with them once before a show in Boston and Jason has a hand colored split single from these guys. We try to figure out what makes this sound so great and what happened to the other gazers of shit from the early 00's. Gold Class: Starting in Melbourne in 2014, Gold Class has had a rapid rise to where they are today. They have released a 7 inch, written, recorded and released their debut album ‘Its You’ via well known tastemaker label Spunk Records here in Australia, as well as scoring an international release through Felte Records for the US and Europe. 2017 saw them follow up with the release of Drum. Produced by The Drones Gareth Liddiard, their second album builds on the post-punk sounds established on Its You, with a new found forward momentum. Recorded at the Against The Grain Fest in Brisbane on the 27th of August 2017. Recorded and mixed by Reuben Aptroot. Kitchen's Floor: Kitchen’s Floor was formed in 2007 by Brisbane based musician Matt Kennedy. They play pop documenting the angst-ridden narratives of Brisbane suburbia. Amongst various EP's, 7" singles and live albums, the band have released 3 full length studio albums to date - Loneliness Is A Dirty Mattress (2009), Look Forward To Nothing (2011) and Battle Of Brisbane (2015). These recordings have been released through independent labels such as Siltbreeze, Bedroom Suck, R.I.P Society, Negative Guest List, Quemada, Easter Bilby, and Breakdance The Dawn. Recorded at the 4ZZZ Carpark in Brisbane on the 26th of August 2017. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic.
If you follow Random Old Records on Facebook, you know that episode #48, the first new episode of Random Old Records Podcast in TWO YEARS, was posted to Soundcloud back in February. This isn't just a temporary thing. ROR IS BACK! Expect to see a brand new episode every second day of the month from here on out. The reasons I quit and came back are convoluted and not very exciting, so I'm not going to go into great detail. The main takeaway is that my podcast host Mevio went out of business two years ago and took down everything I had online, and it's taken me a long time to get the time to fix that mess the right way. Below this post you will see a box to subscribe to my brand new mailing list. Since the venues to freely advertise something like a podcast are drying up (lookin' at you, Facebook!), signing up to the ROR mailing list is the best way to keep up. The ONLY time you will get an email from me is when a new episode is posted. That's it! Put your email in, click Submit, and you'll be the first to know when (and where) the next episode drops! While I'm on the self-promotion kick, you will notice that there is a new "Podcast Archive" post below this one. This will contain links and info for past episodes of Random Old Records. I'm slowly going through my files and re-uploading everything, and this will keep track of the process. There are a bunch already posted, with more coming soon! Now that all the boring babble is finished, let's get to the JAMS! Random Old Records Podcast #49 features an hour's worth of killer tracks, The spotlight this time is bruising, heavy, noisy punk rock from the likes of Mystic Inane, Life Stinks, Cows, and Whatever Brains, plus the chillest of chill jams by Mac Demarco, Mild High Club, and Greg Ashley, and a bit of rare 70s rock n' roll from Morningstar and Sugluk! Kitchen's Floor (Solo): Kitchen's Floor was formed in 2007 by Brisbane based musician Matt Kennedy. In this particular set, Matt had come back from touring Europe in solo mode and continued the trend for this particular show. Many songs from the Kitchen’s Floor discography appear in this set in a stripped down form and you can hear Matt compensating for the lack of extra guitars with his melodic playing. Recorded at The Bearded Lady in Brisbane on the 26th of December 2015, this is Kitchen’s Floor solo and you are listening to Live Delay. The Bear Hunt Originating from the stifling humidity of Townsville, North Queensland, The Bear Hunt moved down to Brisbane late 2012 with one EP in hand, and thought it fitting to re-record many of the original EP tracks to better reflect the band’s changing sound in the form of their first full length album “TBH [To Be Honest]”, which was released in October 2015. Their sound is raw and disheveled but somehow tight, full of heroic stoner groove riffs. True garage rock mingled with the occasional touch of blues, country and psychedelia. Recorded at The Triffid in Brisbane on the 13th of December 2015, this is The Bear Hunt and you’re tuned into Live Delay.
Our musical crosshairs set themselves on Columbus, Ohio this psychedelic weekend, with an explosive set of blues flavored rock from trio Mount Carmel. The group has released a new album on Siltbreeze called Real Women, a great soundtrack as you spin donuts, jump bridges, and dodge explosions in your ’76 Trans Am. In 2010, a […]
As expected, missed records from 2009 keep rolling in, with the Meercaz LP on Tic Tac Totally (reissue of Gulcher Records CD from early 2009) currently dominating the stereo. For those that are also late to the game on this one, Meercaz is based outta Portland, Oregon and even shares a member with one of my favorite bands from that city, Meth Teeth. Definitely one of those records that doesn't sound contemporary, but more like some long lost mid-70s proto-punk group hailing from some industrial city in middle America. Heavy riffage, tone deaf vocals and plenty o' weird analog synth bleeps and burps thrown in for serious left tiltage. Songs range from two-minute, fist pumping MC5-styled jams to seven-minute stormy industro-punk excursions. Highly recommended. Also late on the 2009 chopping block is the sprawling 2LP speaker shredder that is the new Shit & Shine. Over an hour of repetitive riffs that sound spewed through slashed amps and run over with a rusty lawnmower. 229-2299 Girls Against Shit also makes brief dalliances into dub, disco and, uhhm, race car humour(?). Yeah, anyways, fans of the early, damaged end of the Butthole Surfers and even the overkill fuzz-sludge of The Goslings are urged to pay attention. The painfully limited-run of the Siltbreeze 10 inch compilation Skulls Without Borders dropped in the mail slot last week, and it's an odd mix of folks trying to share the same airspace. Puffy Areolas make a nasty punk-splatter and give high hopes for their forthcoming Siltbreeze debut LP; Chickins, an FNU Ronnies off-shoot, put down a quirky number complete with raygun guitar shots; Dan Melchior plops down another grumpy blast of fuzz riffs and off-kilter guitar solos. The flipside, featuring Kurt Vile, Tommy Jay Band and Sic Alps, will be played next week...Heading back over to this side of continent, AFCGT (aka A Frames Climax Golden Twins), who have been given much love here on ETMS, drop their vinyl-only (!) release via Sub Pop next week, and I was lucky enough to be able to provide a sneak peek. Not much has changed from the Seattle juggernaut, hell, if anything, the 5 piece have beefed up their sound considerably on the more amped up tracks, and waded even deeper into their more experimental side. Not yr typical Sub Pop release, but we're pleased as all hell they've decided to put this one strictly to wax.Swimming up the coastline back to our city, Tassles sent over a few intriguing tracks of drifting bedroom electronic pleasantries. Tassles is better known in Vancouver as Sean Orr, who helms the shit detector on Beyond Robson's Morning Brew and fronts the recently reunited post-hardcore revisionists Taxes. Tassles sees Orr relaxing his jaw for a few and learning to relax a little bit. You probably won't see Tassles open for Taxes anytime soon. Either way, someone out there release fucking something from either of these...asap!Banana Head (aka Zully Adler, head of Goaty Tapes) also was kind enough to send some new jams my way. Brand new cassette of solo loner jams, absolutely perfect for these bland winter days. Goaty Tapes has come a long way since its inception a few years back; brand new tapes by HNY (awesome cassette on Not Not Fun reviewed here), Russian Tsarlag and Paradise Sisters, who have a forthcoming 12 inch due out soon on De Stijl. In the works are cassettes by El Jesus De Magico, Psychic Reality (split 12" with LA Vampires forthcoming for them on Not Not Fun) and Goaty will also head into LP territory with an Ancestral Diet full length. Get stoked, people.Hot off the heels of the much-loved seven inch, Brainbombs offshoot No Balls release a full length LP on Sweden's Release The Bats. And, of course, its in a disgustingly small pressing of 300 and sold out before it was even outta the pressing plant. Not far off the Brainbombs aesthetic of violent, hammering repetition, but, this time around with just drums and guitar, plus the occasional sax squlech and distance vocals, which may or may not be appallingly misogynistic.
