I'm sure you were all deeply alarmed (as was I) earlier this week to learn the unscrupulous Wheelchair Full Of Old Men Records had plans to relaunch Sockeye while employing an AI approximation of vocalist Food Fortunata.  It's a chilling development to be sure (particularly as Mr. Fortunata is very much alive and well) , but before we all jump to conclusions, perhaps it would behoove one and all to wait for the final results before passing judgement. Disruptors like Wheelchair Full Of Old Men didn't get to the top of the food (fortunata) chain by respecting the status quo (or Status Quo, for that matter who are probably due for an AI upgrade of their own).   Due to yet another failure on the part of East Village Radio's rights clearance department, there is no Sockeye on this week's program.  To be honest, I am no longer certain what any of us have to be thankful for.

Hawthorne, California's Redd Kross have been defying stylistic scene conventions since their pre-teen days opening for the likes of Black Flag, creating a body of work over the span of four decades! Liberally dipping into the cultural zeitgeist to borrow from The Beatles, Kiss, glam, punk, bubbelgum and a myriad of high-and-lowbrow signposts, the band as of recent seen a flurry of activity including a documentary Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story, a new, self-titled double opus on In The Red Records, and now a forthcoming book chronicling their wild ride called Now You're One Of Us: The Incredible Story of Redd Kross out this fall. Seemed like an appropriate time to get founder siblings Jeff and Steve McDonald (the latter spending recent years as well in Off! and The Melvins) to talk all things past present and future. And pick tunes. Do not miss! Playlist at brianturnershow.com

This week's episode was recorded just a stone's throw from East Village Radio's 1st avenue storefront though I don't understand why anyone would be throwing stones at the station's HQ.  Surely it would be more efficient just to bang on the gate?  Despite a multitude of changes, this can still be a pretty tough neighborhood - for instance, I was scheduled yesterday to meet with Bobby Steele in order to launch a competitor to John Joseph's “Fear City” walking tour and it turns out the person I'd been sending money to on CashApp is not actually Bobby Steele but rather someone operating out of a boiler room on the other side of the world.  Which I suppose is a good learning lesson for all of us (but especially me) — if you're going head to head with the cadillac of walking tours, you'd better bring more to the table than the Yugo of walking tours  (particularly if it turns out the Yugo is really named Hugo and couldn't tell A7 apart from A24).

I don't like to talk about this very often but when i was a young adolescent, the Unification Church tried (unsuccessfully) to recruit me.  I don't know if it was a matter of my being an usually difficult personality to break down or perhaps it was just that the snacks at the Jews For Jesus meetings were so much better (who buys RC Cola and realistically expects to brainwash anyone) but either way, I did not end up selling flowers by the side of the road.  Which brings me to present day and a memo from East Village Radio mgmt requesting my presence in NYC next for a “team building exercise”.  I've got some experience here and the rhetoric sounds suspiciously like something that will have me selling flowers by the side of the road.  And that's ok, I've never been a team player before and maybe it's time I started.  If do happen to see me selling flowers by the side of the road, please keep in mind a) the flowers don't sell themselves (if they did, they would be the smartest flowers of all time) and b) I CANNOT CUT YOU A DEAL.

Now that this show falls under the banner of East Village Radio's star-studded lineup, it seems I'm under some obligation to inform the station's powers-that-be what each episode contains in terms of themes, commentary.  I tried to explain that this episode was all about how I've got OLYMPIC FEVER but I guess the connection was poor and Brian thought I said “Ozempic Fever”.  Thus the entire show had to be vetted by the legal department at Novo Nordisk (who may or may not be bankrolling the station) and now I'm under what's being called TRIPLE SECRET PROBATION.  This seems a bit much, I mean, granted EVR has to protect itself but is an ankle bracelet really necessary (and does it have to be pink)?  (above 70's pop idols turned Ozempic pitchmen Pilot - hands up everyone who ever heard “Oh Oh Oh It's Magic” and thought, “there's no way this can be performed without a double neck SG”)

in the words of the wonderful lyricist Bernie Taupin, sorry seems to be the hardest word.  Especially if I have to say it many times in one intro.  There are a number of inaccurate or potential litigation-bait statements on this week's program and I'd like to profusely apologize for several of them, but perhaps not all of them. I'M SORRY #1 :  I regret to referring to decorated astronaut Sally Ride (above)  as "a school teacher" (she was, of course, a physicist) and no, she did not perish on the ill-fated Challenger Space Shuttle.  I'd mixed her up with the late Christa McAuliffe. I'M SORRY #2 :  during the show's first mic break, I claimed Consumer Electronics were playing Hotel Vegas on January 19.  The show is in fact, JUNE 19.  If this has in any way impacted your January travel, that's really a shame (but you should really double check this stuff, especially if you're booking a trip 6 months away, who does that)I'M SORRY #3 :  I suggested that after said event, Hotel Vegas' patio, "will never be the same".  In reality, absolutely nothing will change. Hopefully we'll have some news in the next week or two about this show re : East Village Radio, but to be perfectly honest I am already having difficulty with the program director's "less talk, more rock" edict.  Less so about the rock part (i love following orders about what to play), but less talk likely means fewer opportunities to apologize at the end of the episode.  Which means MORE TYPING.

This interview took place in September of 2013 in a tiny studio in the East Village in New York City. Pierre was thrilled to be asked to co-interview Gordon and Brian of the Violent Femmes on the occasion of their upcoming show at Summer Stage, re-starting an era of touring and recording for the band. The Violent Femmes were a hugely influential part of 1980's culture, starting with their massive hit “Blister in the Sun” in 1983 and continuing to this day.  Their music was life-changing for Pierre and kicked-started his journey as a guitarist and songwriter.https://vfemmes.com/https://www.brian-viglione.com/biohttps://www.evr2.com/Theme song; Marchandise by Pierre de Gaillande, from the album franglais. (originally Merchandise by Fugazi.) From MorriconeYouth.com:   Morricone Youth formed in New York City in 1999 with the mission statement of composing, re-interpreting, performing and recording only "music written for the moving image." With a repertoire of over 100 reinterpretations of film and television soundtracks and music production library recordings (many of which recorded for CDs released by Country Club Records),the band performs with projections thematically dedicated to specific composers or film music genres in addition to composing and performing its own original live scores to old silent films, midnight movies, animations and shorts in theaters and art spaces around the country. In 2005, Morricone Youth composed original music for its own imaginary film entitled "SILENZIO VIOLENTO," recorded with legendary Brooklyn producer and engineer Martin Bisi released by Country Club Records. The band's original music has regularly been used for television and films, including the documentary "Second Skin" directed by Juan Carlos Pineiro-Escoriaza about MMORPGs.   The band has embarked on the ambitious project of recording and releasing a 15-vinyl/digital series of the enormous body of work it has composed and re-worked for the 15 silent films and midnight movies and performed over the past six years around NYC. The first three releases of the series are now available digitally and on vinyl: (1) "THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED" 6-song 32-minute EP (150g black vinyl, limited pressing of 500 w/ digital download cards); (2) "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD" 6-song 25-minute EP (second pressing on 150g transparent blood red swirl vinyl limited pressing of 500 w/ digital download cards); and (3) "MAD MAX" 10-song 40 minute LP on coke bottle green OR gold black swirl 150g vinyl, limited pressing of 500 each w/ digital download cards). Up next: F.W. Murnau's "SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS" (est. April 2017); Alfred Hitchcock's "THE LODGER" (est. August 2017); and Sergei Eisentein's "BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN" (est. November 2017). Distribution via Light in the Attic Records and Revolver USA.   Guitarist/founder DEVON E. LEVINS has been a dedicated soundtrack record collector since the mid-90's and hosted a weekly soundtrack internet radio show on East Village Radio from 2007-2014 under the same Morricone Youth name as well as interviewing soundtrack composers. Devon is currently hosting an all new soundtrack radio show MORRICONE ISLAND on WFMU (wfmu.org/91.1 FM in NYC/NJ) every Tuesday from 7-8pm ET.   Listen in as Dave and Devon talk music, film, and live performance in the newest episode of the Needless Things Podcast! Steve Conte "International Cover-Up" New Music!

“In some ways, Steve Conte is the quintessential rock and roll musician. He lives in New York City , has played with everyone from the New York Dolls to the late Willy DeVille, released his own work, and is an unabashed admirer of rock and roll in all its many forms and genres. The latter fact is made completely obvious by the choice of material on his latest CD, International Cover Up. As a 13 year old live performer, Steve Conte looked to The Rolling Stones, The J. Geils Band, Black Oak Arkansas, The Beatles & Jimi Hendrix for both musical inspiration and how to give “good show”. Cut to 2016 – Conte releases his “COVERS” album featuring many of the songs he & his band have played on tour – and captures that LIVE spirit in the recordings! The album features songs written and/or recorded by Eddie Cochran, Willy/Mink DeVille, Tom Waits/Ramones, John Lennon, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Jason And The Scorchers – all delivered in pure Conte-style. In addition to playing original songs from his studio albums on tour, Steve would always add a few well-chosen covers. Conte says: “This album contains some of my favorite songs to play live; road-tested in Europe with my band, The Crazy Truth International. I kept the album production sparse to showcase the band’s live energy. All songs were recorded live, in a few takes. Most guitar solos were played live.  ”INTERNATIONAL COVER-UP was largely recorded at Labtones Studio in Dordrecht, The Netherlands by Wilco Minderhoud & Jasper van Dorp. It features 6 studio recordings with Conte’s European version of The Crazy Truth – plus a pair of solo acoustic tracks recorded in New York City; one in his own Manhattan studio, The Joint NYC and the other recorded live on renowned record producer, Steve Lillywhite’s program for East Village Radio, The Lillywhite Sessions.

Camea was born and raised in Seattle as a classical and jazz pianist and music enthusiast, and in her youth she studied a variety of instruments and played in several bands. She started collecting records and experimenting with electronic music in the late 90s, and in 2002 she relocated to Brooklyn, NY, where the city's intense artistic environment deeply inspired her. Her passion for collecting and playing music continued to evolve as she acquired several regular club nights in Manhattan and spawned Clink Recordings, and on Friday evenings she had a radio show with Ambivalent (M_nus, Ovum) on East Village Radio. Eventually Camea began to tour internationally and moved to Berlin in 2007, where she still resides today and is currently signed to Bpitch Control, one of the world's premier underground labels that can be credited in the evolution of artists like Ellen Allien, Paul Kalkbrenner, Apparat and Modeselektor. Camea is a passionate performer and blends her more traditional musician roots with classic and modern house and techno. Her tracks have topped sales and DJ charts on many occasions, and she has been center stage at many of the world’s hottest clubs and festivals. Even though DJing has stayed the forefront of Camea's passion, when she is not touring she spends most of her time in her studio in Berlin. She released her first solo EP in 2006 and has achieved a lengthy discography of original work and/or remixes on labels like Bpitch Control, M_nus, Clink, Soma, Plus 8 and Get Physical. Since her relocation to Berlin Camea has become one of the handful of women from America to make it to the International stage for her genre. Though now splitting her time between Miami and Brooklyn, XLR8R’s “artist to watch” Jubilee will always be Brooklyn’s bass sweetheart. Known for her rambunctious combination of upfront bass music, UK house, and tropical flavors, she has become a surefire remedy for ailing dancefloors around the globe. Co-opting her name from the X-Men character who shot fireworks out of her hands, Jubilee works similar magic when she steps into the DJ booth.

But she’s also simply Jess, the one-time South Florida raver who grew up obsessively listening to Miami bass on the radio and dancing the night away at underground breaks parties. After making the move to NYC, she quickly infiltrated the DJ circuit and began turning heads with her knowledge of all things bass. It’s the sweet mix of underground bass and tropical vibes that brings Jubilee from clubs and warehouse parties to the comfort of your own home. Her radio show Fireworks, on both Brooklyn Radio and Electric Soundstage (iHeartRadio’s new electronic station), continuously features fellow global producers such as Sinden, Bok Bok, Mike Q, and Star Eyes. Prior to Fireworks, she has DJed on East Village Radio and put together well received guest mixes for “The Mix Up” on Australia’s Triple J Radio and XLR8R Magazine’s esteemed podcast series. You can also find Jubilee on the production end of things as one half of Bassanovva, a project with Canadian producer Grahmzilla (previously of Thunderheist). The duo’s debut EP, Chicken Lover, dropped this past November on Sinden’s Grizzly label.

Be sure to also check out her Paypur EP with Udachi for the Nightshifters label, an imprint she runs with Jason Forrest (a.k.a. Dj Donna Summer). These days we have also seen official Jubilee remixes for some of the most buzzed about artists- Cubic Zirconia (with Proper Villians), Canblaster, and Creep (with Star Eyes). As if that’s not enough, Jubilee also puts on the infamous Flashing Lights party (with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres); named Best New Party at the Paper Magazine 2010 Nightlife Awards.

Critical recognition is no stranger to Jess- in 2009, Sasha Frere-Jones invited her to perform at the New Yorker Festival—she was the only DJ on the bill. Jubilee regularly DJs throughout the US and Europe, and you will be sure to see a lot more of her bass-loaded fireworks on both sides of the Atlantic.

Last year we found a deeply beat up copy of the original DUKE 7" and underneath all the scratches and hiss, we heard a brilliant digital roots tunes...HEAVY, driving bassline with classic Waterhouse style vocals. On our next trip down to Jamaica, we were able to locate JAH ROOTS who it turns out, also produced the tune. Apparently he had recorded his vocal in the 80s but never released it until the early 90s at which time he recorded his combination with Biggy Ranks as well a next tune pon the riddim, ROLEX - TELL ME TEACHER. Well, the man had his tapes still, so we put it all together and BOOOM! the exclusive 7" vinyl reissues will be out January 21st on Duke/Deadly Dragon and ONLY available at www.deadlydragonsound.com.
