Prabhupāda said in a lecture, yoga means plus, doesn't mean minus. So this idea of adding ghee and following the order of the spiritual master—these are all plus. We have active, positive practice. It's not block out thinking, and it's not giving up everything, but it's adding Kṛṣṇa. If you add Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa is all-purifying,"sa paryagāc chukram akāyam avraṇam asnāviraḿ śuddham apāpa-viddham kavir manīṣī paribhūḥ svayambhūr yāthātathyato 'rthān vyadadhāc chāśvatībhyaḥ samābhyaḥ" (Īśo 8) He's the purifying force. 'Om apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gato 'pi vā yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ sa bahyābhyantaraḥ śuciḥ'.If you remember Kṛṣṇa, then you become purified inwardly and outwardly. So just add Kṛṣṇa—that's the plus. And how to adhere to that? Remember the order of the spiritual master: "vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana bahu-śākhā hy anantāś ca buddhayo 'vyavasāyinām" (BG 2.41) There are so many speculations about what I can do: go here, go there, get sick, get well, hang around, and inkwell. But the fact is that if we just say, "Okay, I'm going to take the authority of Kṛṣṇa through the paramparā, I'll take my Guru guru's words; that's what I'm going to follow," then one doesn't have to be subjected to the whimsy of the mind and dragged all over the universe. One can be one-minded. And it's really helpful to have permission to do that because the mind comes up with so many excuses. Are you sure you want to be doing this, just sitting there? And there's a saying, sometimes parents would say to kids, " don't just sit there, go do something." But then there should be a book called "Don't Just Do Something, Sit There" for a change. Because the other question was, Arjuna said, "How a person fixing consciousness, can he sit?" Because he says, "How does he sit? How does he walk?" And then the question is like, can you even sit there for a minute without going somewhere else? And so all that leads to this very positive flow that The Holy Name is really beautiful and everything's there. It's enlivening—the form, the name, the līlā—everything's there in The Holy Name. And if I can just stay there long enough to get caught in that attractive flow, then I won't need anything else. It's all plus. Welcome to episode 75 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In this installment, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach/journalist Jo Confino discuss the practice of being and doing – in terms of both Buddhist and mainstream-society perceptions. Together, they look at practical ways to create conditions in which our way of being present can be truly valued and made essential in all our daily actions. How can we train ourselves to maintain presence, in spite of our circumstances? The conversation tackles various relevant topics, such as being as the ground of our actions; being as a state which is crucial for the art of peace; training our concentration; the super-strength of allowing and sharing our vulnerabilities; creating a schedule for practicing being; how ‘to be’ in Zen and what people can get wrong about it; being as a way to access interbeing; doing as an avoidance of being (what is it about being that scares us?); the risks of not bringing being into doing; and more. The episode ends with a short meditation on being, guided by Brother Phap Huu. We think that when we are not doing anything, we are wasting our time. That is not true. Our time is, first of all, for us to be. To be what? To be alive, to be peace, to be joy, to be loving. And that is what the world needs the most. So we train ourselves in order to be. And if you know the art of being peace, being silent, then you have the ground for every action, because the ground for action is to be. And the quality of being determines the quality of doing. Action must be based on non-action.” “This mindset of doing and being has been divided. Whereas, in our training we don’t separate between spirituality and doing.” “In Buddhism, our actions – which we leave behind in this world – are our truest karma. They are the true continuation of our thoughts, our speech, and our bodily actions: how I open the door, how I see you, how I speak to you, how I engage in difficult conversations.” “The schedule is our teacher.” “Being can be very confronting because, when we’re truly there, we start to see ourselves more clearly.” “The real art is being blissful and being present through every storm that arises.” “By being and understanding how to be, you can act with integrity and with understanding.” “Don’t try to explain it; be it first.” “The essence of our practice is to develop our quality of being present. Being present is the ground of all actions. But, a lot of the time, we don't do it with the foundation of right intentions. So when we practice meditation, study the teachings of the Buddha, and really put it into practice, it comes down to becoming more and more present and alive for whatever is present for us.”“We can’t convince people of the importance of being; they have to taste it.”

This week we're pulling an episode to lift your spirits from the archives. This episode was originally released in June of 2021. Looking for a new podcast that's not dark true crime or troubling news? Back in March of 2021 we brought you a playlist full of uplifting stories — and there were plenty more good vibes where that came from. This episode we're bringing them back! Enjoy a cast of characters who will make you smile: a worm who becomes human, a mischievous AI at summer camp, and a poet learning to turn poems into food. If you listen until the end you will be showered with compliments. Guaranteed! Featuring: Paired: "Guided meditations and musings from your digital assistant." Personal Best: "Fan is a poet and writer of love letters. He basks in fantasy, but he's never been able to muster any passion for cooking." The Story Seeds Podcast: "On this week's episode, 12 year old Brooklynite, Irthan joins forces with the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, Jason Reynolds, to grow his story seed about an earthworm that turns into a human every 28 days, on the night of a full moon. Join Irthan and Jason as they meet up at the Youth Wing of the central branch of Brooklyn Public Library where they get to know each other and plant the seeds for their collaboration which explores music, social justice, and being seen. Then, sit back and listen to the lyrical and timely short story, 'Hoo and Wut,' that Jason grew out of Irthan's idea." The Science of Happiness: "There are millions of YouTube channels with people crinkling bubble wrap or whispering about folding laundry. Our guest talks about why autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) makes her, and many others, feel more calm and happy." Sit There & Do Nothing: "Take a deep breath while Meg showers you with compliments in this incredibly relaxing episode of Sit There & Do Nothing."

Rest at PEACE - At St. Albert Alliance Church this May and June, we want to look at how the Bible might define work and rest differently - in such a way that our lives and families could experience more peace and wholeness.  We believe that the Bible lays a blueprint for truly purposeful work that invigorates and enlivens as well as for rest that truly re-creates and renews us.  Guest speaker Mark Buchanan begins our series with "Don't Just Do Something, Sit There"

We're excited to bring you our conversation with gay identical twins Coleman & Jackson Vrana, the guys behind Elephant. This punk-infused hip hop duo talks to us via video Skype (we got to see them, you don't!) about their cutting-edge music, their eclectic audience, the whole twin thing (yup, Scott went there), and their pet pig Coyote, who they suspect is gay. You'll dig these hotties as well as two tracks off their new Don't Sit There. It's Wet album, Queer Nation and Great 4 Play. Get ready for some hardcore, people. This ain't your standard gay bubblegum pop. These guys are trampling stereotypes and "...turning hip hop on its head." Also on this episode... Steve & Scott tell you about their trip to see Janet Jackson; Dale gets burned; We find out if Jason is into fisting; ABC cancels "Desperate Housewives"; The world premiere of Scott's "My Pussy Now" song; Britney is (allegedly) a pig; Fleshjack hires a new hottie foursome (see photo way below); Scott's second favorite redhead turns 100; and, The guys play "Whose Dick Is Bigger?" Episode 146 is called, "Queer Nation," in honor of Coleman & Jackson.
