Prabhupāda said in a lecture, yoga means plus, doesn't mean minus. So this idea of adding ghee and following the order of the spiritual master—these are all plus. We have active, positive practice. It's not block out thinking, and it's not giving up everything, but it's adding Kṛṣṇa. If you add Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa is all-purifying,"sa paryagāc chukram akāyam avraṇam asnāviraḿ śuddham apāpa-viddham kavir manīṣī paribhūḥ svayambhūr yāthātathyato 'rthān vyadadhāc chāśvatībhyaḥ samābhyaḥ" (Īśo 8) He's the purifying force. 'Om apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gato 'pi vā yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ sa bahyābhyantaraḥ śuciḥ'.If you remember Kṛṣṇa, then you become purified inwardly and outwardly. So just add Kṛṣṇa—that's the plus. And how to adhere to that? Remember the order of the spiritual master: "vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana bahu-śākhā hy anantāś ca buddhayo 'vyavasāyinām" (BG 2.41) There are so many speculations about what I can do: go here, go there, get sick, get well, hang around, and inkwell. But the fact is that if we just say, "Okay, I'm going to take the authority of Kṛṣṇa through the paramparā, I'll take my Guru guru's words; that's what I'm going to follow," then one doesn't have to be subjected to the whimsy of the mind and dragged all over the universe. One can be one-minded. And it's really helpful to have permission to do that because the mind comes up with so many excuses. Are you sure you want to be doing this, just sitting there? And there's a saying, sometimes parents would say to kids, " don't just sit there, go do something." But then there should be a book called "Don't Just Do Something, Sit There" for a change. Because the other question was, Arjuna said, "How a person fixing consciousness, can he sit?" Because he says, "How does he sit? How does he walk?" And then the question is like, can you even sit there for a minute without going somewhere else? And so all that leads to this very positive flow that The Holy Name is really beautiful and everything's there. It's enlivening—the form, the name, the līlā—everything's there in The Holy Name. And if I can just stay there long enough to get caught in that attractive flow, then I won't need anything else. It's all plus. Welcome to episode 75 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In this installment, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach/journalist Jo Confino discuss the practice of being and doing – in terms of both Buddhist and mainstream-society perceptions. Together, they look at practical ways to create conditions in which our way of being present can be truly valued and made essential in all our daily actions. How can we train ourselves to maintain presence, in spite of our circumstances? The conversation tackles various relevant topics, such as being as the ground of our actions; being as a state which is crucial for the art of peace; training our concentration; the super-strength of allowing and sharing our vulnerabilities; creating a schedule for practicing being; how ‘to be’ in Zen and what people can get wrong about it; being as a way to access interbeing; doing as an avoidance of being (what is it about being that scares us?); the risks of not bringing being into doing; and more. The episode ends with a short meditation on being, guided by Brother Phap Huu. We think that when we are not doing anything, we are wasting our time. That is not true. Our time is, first of all, for us to be. To be what? To be alive, to be peace, to be joy, to be loving. And that is what the world needs the most. So we train ourselves in order to be. And if you know the art of being peace, being silent, then you have the ground for every action, because the ground for action is to be. And the quality of being determines the quality of doing. Action must be based on non-action.” “This mindset of doing and being has been divided. Whereas, in our training we don’t separate between spirituality and doing.” “In Buddhism, our actions – which we leave behind in this world – are our truest karma. They are the true continuation of our thoughts, our speech, and our bodily actions: how I open the door, how I see you, how I speak to you, how I engage in difficult conversations.” “The schedule is our teacher.” “Being can be very confronting because, when we’re truly there, we start to see ourselves more clearly.” “The real art is being blissful and being present through every storm that arises.” “By being and understanding how to be, you can act with integrity and with understanding.” “Don’t try to explain it; be it first.” “The essence of our practice is to develop our quality of being present. Being present is the ground of all actions. But, a lot of the time, we don't do it with the foundation of right intentions. So when we practice meditation, study the teachings of the Buddha, and really put it into practice, it comes down to becoming more and more present and alive for whatever is present for us.”“We can’t convince people of the importance of being; they have to taste it.”

Don't Just Do Something, Sit There | "Knowing Grace, Part 03" | Tullian Tchividjian John 6:28-29
Based on Kevin DeYoung's: Just Do SomethingRespectable Sins – Chapter 8 – “Anxiety and Frustration”We will be spending a little time on some sins that Jerry Bridges refers to as “Respectable Sins.” These tend to be those sins in our lives that we accept or excuse. Today we will be looking at anxiety and frustration.▪ The opposite of trust in God is lack of trust which usually manifests itself in anxiety, worry, or frustration.Anxiety & Worry▪ Prominent passages:~ Matthew 6:25-34▪ Word “worry” or “anxious” in the text we tend to use only in a negative sense.▪ Not always the case [1 Cor. 7:32; Phil:2:20]~ 1 Corinthians 12:25 – so that there should be no division in the body, but that its partsshould have equal concern for each other~ 2 Corinthians 11:28 – Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concernfor all the churches▪ You see Scripture talks of two kinds of worry or concern.~ There is a godly, circumspect and moderate concern that is appropriate for a believer;while there is a distrustful, inordinate, and overwhelming concern that is not onlyinappropriate for a believer, but also sinful.~ Philippians 4:6 & 1 Peter 5:7▪ What is at the bottom of anxiety? What are we truly saying when we are anxious?~ Distrust~ Lack of acceptance of God's providence in our lives~ Bridges – “Unwillingness to submit to and cheerfully accept God's agenda for me.”~ John Newton – “How happy are they who can resign all to him, see his hand in every dispensation, andbelieve that he chooses better for them than they possibly could for themselves.”▪ Pray that God would give us a spirit to submit to His providential will when it is contrary to my own plans▪ Difference between worry and anxiety:~ Worry is associated with more long-term difficult or painful circumstances for which there appears to be no resolution.▪ We are to rest in the promises of God and the ministry of the Holy SpiritFrustrationWhen we struggle with God's providential care, sometimes this results in our being upset or even angry at whatever orwhoever is blocking our plans▪ Failure to recognize the invisible hand of God behind whatever is triggering my frustration▪ When my printer doesn't print (offline) or drivers are struggling with the simple rules of driving, I tend not to think about God in the situation but focus entirely on the immediate cause of my frustration▪ Psalm 139:16 – “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”▪ Bring to bear specific Scripture and dependence on the Holy Spirit▪ Pray that God would help us see what He might be seeking to teach us through these events/circumstances ~ ways in which He is growing our faithFor more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. Work through these principles from chapter 8, “The Way of Wisdom”▪ He begins with Proverbs 2:1-6 and then provides these three insights about how we get wisdom:1. By reading our Bibles (storing up God's commands) [scripture]2. Listening to sound advice (turning our ears to wisdom) [counsel]3. Praying to God (calling out for insight) [prayer]And make application to work & marriage (Chapter 9) - maybe helpful to walk through these as wellNot sure if the material from chapter 6 would be helpful in this conversationIn chapter 6, DeYoung provides insights on how God provides guidance in decision making.▪ “I believe God guides us in decision making. But note the key word there: ‘God guides us in decision making.'I did not say, ‘God expects us to discover His plan for our lives.'”▪ DeYoung then quotes from Hebrews 1:1-2 and then give five statements to help us understand God's guidancein the book of Hebrews1. God guides us by His invisible providence at all times. (page 63)2. God can speak to His people in many different ways, guiding them with their conscious cooperation(pages 63-64)3. In these last days, God has spoken to us by His Son (page 64)4. God continues to speak to us by His Son through His Spirit in the Scriptures (page 65-66)5. Apart from the Spirit working though Scripture, God does not promise to use any other means to guideus, nor should we expect him to. Go For It! - Ecclesiastes 11:1-12:1 Today we will see Solomon's message to young people and others who are anxious about making wrong decisions – if you love God and you are already committed to live according to biblical truth, when you have an opportunity to do something for Him, GO FOR IT! Read Ecclesiastes 11:1-12:1 Anxiety is defined as a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. Interestingly, the dictionary presents the following antonyms (opposites) for anxiety: Faith, collectedness, composure, confidence, contentment, joy, peace, security, tranquility. Committed believers should be people of action V. 1-6 He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him. -Psalm 126:6 “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” -Jim Elliott In Chapter 10 Solomon advised us to plan ahead and prepare for what we will face; here he wisely instructs us not to put off what we need to do because of what might go wrong. Committed believers trust God is unfolding His plan in their lives V. 5-8 When you hold a child, you appreciate the beautiful little person that God has brought into the world. Like that, one day you will understand how God was bringing all things together in your life, making everything beautiful in its time! Good and evil run on parallel tracks and usually arrive at the same time. -Evangelist Ron Dunn The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed are for us and our children forever. -Deuteronomy 29:29 Did you know that the word decide comes from the Latin word decidere, meaning ‘to cut off?' We can stop pleading with God to show us the future, and start living and obeying like we are confident that He holds the future. -Kevin De Young, Just Do Something, page 42 We must say no to anything that the Bible calls sin. We must obey the Holy Spirit when He won't give us peace about a course of action through prayer. It is good to get godly counsel on a matter. But don't live in fear of “missing God's will” when decision time comes – Go for it! Committed believers go for it! V. 9-10 But if you love God and are committed to staying within His biblical guardrails for your life, the word here is to GO FOR IT! “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” -Psalm 37:4 Maximize your life for God's glory while you can, because you can't go back and do it again. But remember that we will give an account to God for it all, so stay away from what's off limits!

AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich has a conversation with District 1 Director Dr. Liz Brock on how mindfulness meditation has impacted both of their lives in a positive way. They share their stories about their messy lives and how they have incorporated meditation practice to improve mental health, reduce stress and anxiety, manage work-life interaction, improve focus, and being generally happier. Gingrich and Brock talk about what brought them to meditation practice, its importance for bovine veterinarians who are suffering, and feeling our thoughts and emotions on a practical level. While neither are experts in mindfulness coaching, they share their direct experiences on the positive impacts it has had on their lives and encourage other veterinarians to try to start a daily practice. In this episode, we sit down with Ruth to discuss her decision to embark on a new adventure, trusting that God will guide her every step of the way. We explore the power of making decisions and trusting in God's plan, even when it's hard to see the way forward. Ruth shares her experience of helping students discover God's presence in their lives and the joy of stewarding the gifts that God has given us. Join us for this inspiring conversation and let it encourage you to take that next step, trusting that God is with you every step of the way. “It was hard to think about leaving family behind [...] and just feeling like I was going to miss out on a lot of their lives.” Just Do Something by Kevin DeYoung “At the end of the day, sometimes you have to just make a decision [...] that's what it felt like when I decided to go. I just had to make a decision.” “Trust that, whatever decision you make, God's going to be with you through that.” “[It's neat to get] to be a part of that in a student's life, helping them see that God cares about all of the little things in our lives and listens to our prayers.” “God has slowly been working at my heart and calling me one step at a time.” “I trust that this is what's next; I don't know exactly what that's going to look like, but I'm trusting that God's going to show me each step of the way.&rdquo “It's okay to not be perfect and to not have it all figured out right away. God is bigger than that, and I can trust Him with all of the big things and all of the little things.” “By studying math, we train our brains to notice patterns and solve problems, and that's just a good stewarding of the brain that God has given us.” Join Dakar Academy in praying for staffing needs on the day this episode releases! So far as we know, Jesus' brothers and sisters were not present at the crucifixion. With one exception, his disciples were no-shows. The people whose sight Jesus had restored, whose bodies he had healed, they weren't present. But when Jesus looked down from the cross, through a haze of pain, he saw that his mother […] The post Don't Just Do Something, Stand There appeared first on Wisdom of the Wounded.
Today with us on the Incite Change Podcast, Coach Mauro sits down with Abiola. Abiola like many others wanted to be active in sports growing up and did not have the opportunity and later developed an unhealthy relationship with food. Having made many attempts along the journey such as different diet fads etc she later realized getting started was something as simple as walking. Having the drive for change and noticing she felt different from just walking, she decided to take matters into her own hands and begin trying different workouts and routines through her research and bouncing knowledge off others. She also speaks to us about starting small and understanding what exercises/plan works best for you. Listening to your body and being consistent is ideal for the process in addition to being strict with your nutrition and understanding what your body needs. In closing, the most important thing she wants us to remember is we be mindful of how we speak to ourselves. The things we tell ourselves matter and you can always Do Whatever You Want To Do. In this episode the guys discuss the question of God' will in the life a believer. This episode is Part 1 of a two-part mini series. Where do I find what God wants for my life? Is Scripture enough or do I need to search for something more? Do I need to hear from God outside of Scripture? Is God speaking today to us through a still, small voice?
