Mitch Joel is a visionary. Global brands like Google, Starbucks, Shopify and General Electric, look to Mitch to tell them what's on the horizon of change. His accomplishments are too many to mention but include being the author of several books including Six Pixels of Separation and CTRL ALT Delete, he is a world renown speaker and Founder of Six Pixels Group, he sold his agency Twist Image to WPP after nurturing it for close to two decades, and most recently he was the President of Mirum; a global agency operating in 25 countries with over 3000 employees. Suffice it to say he has a lot to share. Today we cover subjects such as following your instincts in business, what he sees as the clear innovations that will follow the global pandemic, and why remote learning is nothing compared to the real thing. PS- he's also the good friend of Scott Stratten and Ron Tite and is as likeable and gracious, as them both!
The bar has never been lower to start a business by going Direct to Customer, but that doesn't change what the pillars of business are. Direct to Customer brands leverage their true purpose, technology, data, content, and speed to market in astonishing ways. Now, you can too. Brace for impact. Mitch Joel, Founder of Six Pixels Group, is our guest this week. He is one of the amazing speakers at the Conquer Local 2020 Conference in beautiful Montreal. Big and small business need to take it next level by going Direct to the Customer Customer. What do billion dollar companies like Kylie Cosmetics and Dollar Shave Club know that Starbucks and Walmart did not? Mitch explains why these startups quickly disrupted industries that took their competitors decades to decode. This new breed of Direct to Consumer brands has changed the dynamics of business today, What are these companies doing that is so disruptive? Mitch gives us the goods on what you need to know today about the power of direct to consumer brands, and how to build one and/or how to act like one (whether you are in B2C or B2B). Mitch believes that the fundamental traditional Four P's of Marketing - Product, Price, Place, Promotion - are still relevant in today's digital realm. Do you agree? Mitch Joel is Founder of Six Pixels Group - an advisory, investing and content producing company that is focused on commerce and innovation (although he prefers the title, "Media Hacker"). Prior to Six Pixels Group, Mitch spent close to two decades building, running and (eventually) selling his business. Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Do you feel like growing and scaling is always a struggle? Need to differentiate yourself from other agencies? Finding success as an agency owner isn't easy. But with the right mindset, you can hit the 8-figure mark and even power through an eventual agency acquisition. Whether you want to grow your agency fast or plan on growing it to sell, you need to hear from the one and only Mitch Joel, who's done it all. In today's episode, we'll cover: 3 steps to an 8-figure agency. How to power through an agency acquisition. #1 way to differentiate your agency. Today, I talked with Mitch Joel, co-founder of Mirum and founder of Six Pixels Group. Joel is a marketing superstar. He was one of Canada's Top 40 under 40, does keynotes for top brands, and has a best-selling book, Six Pixels of Separation. Mitch also sold his agency Mirum to WPP (a.k.a the world's largest ad agency). And he's on the show to talk about how he was able to grow, sell, and move on from his agency. 3 Steps to an 8-Figure Agency For many agencies, the 8-figure mark is the "we made it!" moment. But how do you get there? Honestly, everyone's path is a little different. That being said, here are 3 universal steps you'll probably need to make. Take on the right partner: There are two things that make a partner great. They need to have the same goals, and they need to compliment your weaknesses. If you're a master salesperson and you're looking for an agency partner, don't look for a salesperson. Find someone who is amazing at the things you're really bad at. Otherwise, you may both end up trying to play to the same tune. And that can lead to a nasty breakup. Get a marquee client: Landing your first big client can completely reshape your agency. You can go from pennies to dollars overnight. It only takes on business with a few friends to grow your agency fast. There's a misconception that you have to have tons of clients to grow. That's not true. You just need a couple of good ones. And they don't even have to big per se! But they do need to be able to pay your agency what you're worth. Have the right philosophy: You need to be scale-focused. What does that mean? It means that your processes need to be capable of handling scale. Think about your ability to support large-scale projects with big clients. If you feel like your foundation is weak, you need to build it up before you take on any big clients. Don't just chase big fish without a big hook. You'll get pulled overboard. How to Power Through An Agency Acquisition There's another way to "make it" without hitting 8-figures. Getting your agency acquired is the dream for many of you. It happened to me, and it happened to Mitch. But what do you do when it actually happens? Your first instinct may be to go out and spend the cash. Don't do that! You have to wait until the acquisition is 100% finalized before you celebrate. The entire process will take a while. And you need to be focused on continuing to grow your agency AND focusing on your new "biggest client" — the company acquiring your agency. Force yourself to wait to celebrate. Afterward, you have to get used to not calling the shots. It's tough. You can always do what I did; go start a podcast. It gives you back some of the control you're used to. Plus, you get to help people out. It's a win-win! #1 Way to Differentiate Your Agency Are you tired of being a "me too" agency? Then change your philosophy. STOP trying to be like your competition and you do you. Don't be like everyone else, but instead figure where you stand on these four things that set you apart from every other agency: Trust Empathy Chemistry Authority How can you create a differentiate using these four pillars to stand apart? First, create trust with your clients by showing tons of empathy. Develop amazing internal chemistry that is evident in the way you carry out your core values. And display the level of authority that conveys domination in your area of expertise. Then, use your messaging (website, social posts, etc.) to display this differentiation to your prospects. Most traditional businesses are just now getting used to the idea of a mobile-first world where people spend six hours a day immersed in digital media. But as the digital economy starts to take over, businesses will have to be ready for even more tumultuous change. A new wave of disruptive technology is coming. It will usher in a post-digital age of continuous connectivity and transform how society functions: what’s been called the 4th Industrial Revolution. AI-powered smart speakers, streaming services, messaging platforms, apps, mobile commerce, 5G-connected devices, virtual and augmented reality, blockchain – all converging to transform how people live their lives. No wonder IDC is forecasting over $1 trillion in digital transformation spending this year, an increase of 18% over 2018, as businesses frantically try to upgrade and modernize their infrastructure and systems. But most businesses remain “digitally distraught”, as IDC puts it. New ways of connecting with customers means new ways of doing business – hard to pull off if the C-suite can’t see past the next earnings report. Digital transformation is not for the “faint of heart”, IDC warns. It takes an enterprise-wide commitment to change. It requires an inspiring vision of how to create an unforgettable customer experience. And it means rewiring the business to become more agile, collaborative, daring, innovative. In other words, it means acting more like “digital natives”. Since the number one goal of digital transformation is almost always to improve the customer experience, marketing should be leading the way. Yet, according to Forrester, that job is usually handed to the CIO, who’s more likely to be thinking digital-first, not customer-first. Which is why efforts at digital transformation generally run aground: siloed mentalities, timid goal-setting and risk aversion get in the way of being customer-obsessed. To act like a “digital native” demands an inquiring mind and a constant itch to defy convention. Those attributes perfectly describe Mitch Joel, the Montrealer who’s made a name for himself as a digital expert specializing in decoding the future, as he puts it. He built his reputation as a trailblazer in the early days of the digital revolution, dating back to the start-up of his digital agency Twist Image in 2002, which he later sold to WPP. Mitch writes a popular blog called “Six Pixels of Separation” which he started 16 years ago and produces a weekly podcast by that same name. He’s also written a couple of best-selling books, the second of which, “CTRL ALT Delete”, was about “the evolution and reboot of business”. So it was natural that digital transformation would be the main subject of our conversation. But first I wanted to know – how did he go from being a music journalist and publisher at the start of his career to becoming a renowned digital seer?
Connecting through meaningful advertising is a key element of any real estate business. However, how we think about buying has greatly changed because of the new models and technology, thereby making advertising rather challenging. Digital expert Mitch Joel shares his observations on how advertising works from a consumer and advertiser’s perspective. Mitch is the Founder of Six Pixels Group, an advisory, investing, and content-producing company that is focused on brands, commerce, community, and what’s next. He offers some tips on how brands and consumers can use technology to efficiently connect with each other, and touches on the importance of evaluating and understanding various audiences before creating a marketing or advertising campaign. Mitch Joel Show Notes Mitch Joel is Founder of Six Pixels Group – an advisory, investing and content producing company that is focused on brands, commerce and community. He has been called a marketing and communications visionary, interactive expert and community leader (he prefers the title “Brand Hacker”). He is also an entrepreneur, author, journalist, investor, trusted advisor, and passionate speaker who connects with people worldwide by sharing his insights on business transformation and marketing innovation. He has been named one of the top 100 online marketers in the world, and was awarded the highly prestigious Top 40 Under 40. Prior to Six Pixels Group, Mitch spent close to two decades building, running and (eventually) selling his business. He was President of Mirum – a global digital marketing agency operating in 25 countries with close to 3000 employees. Mirum is owned by WPP. Most passionate about Right now is an interesting time for me. I had been building and running with three business partners a digital marketing agency called Mirum that I recently left as of July 1st. I’m now in a new venture, which is called 6 Pixels Group, which is a business based off my blog and podcast, Six Pixels of Separation, but it’s more of a holding company for a whole bunch of things I’ll be working on. Mitch’s best advice about approaching customers I’ve spent a lot of time out in the world, sharing and connecting, and I think that’s the primary way people find and connect to me. I’ve spent a lot of time doing work for non-profits and volunteering. I’ve been very fortunate, and I’m playing a bit of a long game here, I’m really doing my best to not think immediately about what the issues are but instead how I can push things forward. Businesses need somebody to help them figure out how to get better consumers, and that’s the type of game I want to be a part of. I think you really need to understand and live your purpose. When you have a purpose that’s very specific as a business, your values, your mission, and not just the pedantic words you put on a sign, but the ones you live and breath, those are the ways that people truly believe or see a level of differentiation. So, I try to figure out what the differentiation is; it’s very hard to have something completely unique. Once you figure out what your angle is, it’s easier to say no to the types of businesses that aren’t right for you. I think, a lot of times, entrepreneurs get trapped because it’s hard. I’ve started many ventures and I know at the beginning you want to take everything and go for everything and it’s hard to do that really well. Biggest failure with a customer I was part of an agency business for over 15 years and you lose a lot more than you win, so I think the overall process of pitching would be the one. You have to have a very thick skin, you’re looking at it from the prospective of ‘you’ve answered everything perfectly, you’ve met them, there’s good chemistry’, but you still didn’t win the business. So, when you’re in the agency business, that question is a strange one because it’s all about spending most of your days losing and not winning the client, and not being successful. Once you have the client, the challenge is keeping them and trying to maintain that level because other people are knocking on that door. So when you ask ‘was there one failure?’ There’s many and they happen every single year because you’re counting on that to grow and maintain the business. It’s a constant slog when you are in the agency world. Biggest success due to the right customer approach Historically, over building the business that we did for over 15 years and trying to introduce different types of technologies and newer things to more traditional businesses. There’s just a process in place. So, when you talk about an error that was made, once the error is identified, we would get on the phone right away,...
