Alden Wicker is a journalist, founder of ecocult.com and the author of To Dye For: How Toxic Fashion Is Making Us Sick—and How We Can Fight Back. You can subscribe to Alden's newsletter HERE. Avoiding toxic chemicals in clothing is important for both personal health and environmental sustainability. Here are some tips from Alden Wicker and the ecocult.com team: 1. Choose Organic and Natural Fibers: Look for clothing made from organic cotton, linen, and hemp. These materials are generally grown and processed without harmful pesticides and chemicals. Organic certification labels, such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), can be a reliable indicator of this. 2. Avoid Synthetic Fibers: Synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and acrylic are petroleum-based and often treated with various chemicals during production. These can include harmful dyes, flame retardants, and other toxic substances. Most “vegan leather” contains very toxic PVC or PUC, one plastic-free plant based leather that Alden recommends researching is called Mirum. 3. Check for Certifications: Certifications like GOTS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and Bluesign ensure that clothing is made without harmful chemicals. These certifications cover various aspects of textile production, from raw material extraction to the finished product. ToxicFreeFuture.org is another group Alden mentioned as a resource that tests products and urges legislators to mandate transparency in materials and chemicals. 4. Be Wary of Certain Treatments and Applications: Avoid clothing with features like wrinkle resistance, static resistance, and stain resistance, as these often involve the use of chemicals. Also, be cautious of overly bright or unnatural-looking colors, which can be a sign of heavy dye use. 5. Research Brands: Support brands that are transparent about their manufacturing processes and committed to reducing chemical use. Many eco-friendly brands prioritize non-toxic production methods and are open about their supply chains. 6. Wash New Clothes Before Wearing: New clothing can have surface chemicals or residues from the manufacturing process. Washing them before wearing can help reduce your exposure to these chemicals. 7. Use Gentle, Eco-Friendly Laundry Products: The detergents and fabric softeners you use can also contribute to chemical exposure. Choose products that are eco-friendly and free from harsh chemicals. 8. Practice Minimalism in Your Wardrobe: By buying fewer but higher quality items that are made sustainably, you can reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals and also contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry. 9. Speak Up: Ask retailers and manufacturers about their standards and materials. Over time, the market reflects what we ask for as well as what we refuse to buy. Ask your legislators what they are doing to make clothing safer and to require transparency of the chemicals workers and wearers are exposed to. Remember, while it's challenging to completely eliminate exposure to all toxic chemicals in clothing, these steps can significantly reduce your risk and contribute to a healthier environment. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Plant Based / Vegan Life Coaching. ”We're already starting to see this happening, like there's a leather tannery in Vietnam called Isa TanTeck, where leather runs through the blood. That's what they specialize at. They came out with their own mycelium material. A leather tannery has come out with their own mycelium material. Are they in it? Are they in it for the passion of saving animals and the vegan kind of philosophies? No, they're in it because they're smart people and they've got good scientists and they've been able to create a new a new product line.” – Joey Pringle Joey Pringle is the founder and co-owner of Veshin Factory, an original equipment and design manufacturer specializing in luxury bags and accessories made from leather alternatives. They work with brands during product design and manufacturing stages to help them make the switch to next gen materials. Veshin was founded with the goal of helping brands go animal free, but because of a partnership with Natural Fiber Welding, maker of Mirum, it's fast become a leader in plastic-free manufacturing too. Currently, Joey lives in Colombia where he is piloting Veshin Factory's second factory.
“And it's true that as much as online makes things much more accessible in so many ways, sometimes it's the feeling and seeing that actually really gets people over the line, because they're like, ‘Oh, wow, that feels really… that looks really good. Oh, look at it on me. Oh, you can style it like this as well. And oh, you can go over the shoulder like, yeah…' the touch is really important for consumer goods” – Jessica Kruger Jessica Kruger is the founder of a vegan handbag company called Shaker. They had a rebrand in June, they were originally founded as LUXTRA in 2018. With the rebrand, came new design and new material. Shaker's handbags are made with MIRUM® - the first high-end leather alternative that is 100% plastic-free, which is a HUGE deal. I spent time with Jessica in London and saw Shaker's bags in person. And they are absolutely stunning. Jessica originally started her journey of building cruelty-free businesses in 2014 when she opened ETHOS – one of London's best loved meat-free restaurants - after her mother volunteered at Farm Sanctuary in California. speciesunite.com https://shakerlondon.com/ https://mirum.naturalfiberwelding.com/

The BMW Group plans to launch its first vehicles featuring completely vegan interiors next year. It will be available in both BMW and Mini models. The German manufacturer says this advance is made possible primarily through the development of materials with leather-like properties. “It will be possible to also use these materials for steering wheel surfaces, which must fulfil demanding criteria when it comes to feel, premium appearance and wear resistance,” notes the group. BMW believes the demand for vegan and leather-free interiors is set to increase further in the near future, especially in the US, China and Europe. The launch of such interiors will also aid the manufacturer in its ambition to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over the lifecycle of a vehicle as it move towards climate neutrality, which is to be achieved by 2050 at the latest. “Replacing raw materials of animal origin makes a significant contribution to increasing sustainability in vehicle production,” notes BMW. “The introduction of a new surface material for steering wheels will see the proportion of vehicle components that contain traces of raw materials of animal origin fall to less than 1% in the respective BMW and Mini vehicles. “As a result, these materials will now only be found in areas that are not visible to the customer, for example in various waxy substances such as gelatine used in protective coatings, lanolin in paints, tallow as an additive in elastomers and beeswax as a flux for paints.” The new steering wheel surface material reduces carbon dioxide equivalent emissions along the value chain by about 85% compared with leather, says the company. Up to now, most of the emissions linked to leather – about 80% – were in the form of methane gas from cattle rearing. The remaining 20% was accounted for by processing of the cowhide, which is highly energy- and water-intensive. Climate Neutrality To achieve the group's goal of climate neutrality, BMW says it is relying on the use of green electricity in production and in the supply chain, a consistently increased proportion of secondary materials and natural raw materials, efficient electric motors and combustion engines and a high recycling rate. For example, the floor mats for various models are made from mono-material, thus avoiding material mixes that are difficult to recycle. As a result, BMW saves around 23 000 t of CO2 and an additional 1 600 t of waste a year, since the recycled floor mats and waste material are also reused within the production process. Research and development in the field of secondary raw materials and sustainable materials are also a priority. BMW says it is working with start-up companies to develop bio-based materials. Compared with the synthetic leathers previously used, these result in about 45% lower CO2 emissions. Mirum, which is 100% bio-based and petroleum-free, has the potential to mimic all the properties of traditional leather. Another new material, Deserttex, is made from pulverised cactus fibres with a bio-based polyurethane matrix. “With these materials, replacing raw materials of animal origin can be combined with a significant reduction in CO2,” says BMW.

Are you losing any sleep over the climate crisis? After another summer of heatwaves and wildfires around the world, the topic of sustainability is more top of mind than ever. Confronting this global crisis are countless “green” inventors, entrepreneurs, and corporations working on new ways to cut emissions and reduce our dependence on products derived from fossil fuels. And it's right here, at the intersection of innovation and sustainability, where intellectual property plays a critical role.On this episode of Stroke of Genius, host Raha Francis sits down with the Intellectual Property Owners Education Foundation's newly declared ‘Inventor of the Year', Luke Haverhals, the CEO of Natural Fiber Welding. Luke and his team at NFW have developed a new way of making the textiles in everything from t-shirts and sneakers to car interiors, using only plant-based materials. Their process is “circular,” which means their products need never end up in a landfill! As you'll hear, I.P. protection was a crucial component of Luke's journey from a farm boy in Iowa, to the US Naval Academy in Maryland, to founding his very own company in Illinois. Make sure to listen to the end, Luke shares some invaluable I.P. advice for aspiring inventors and entrepreneurs.Click here to learn more about the IPOEF's ‘Inventor of the Year' Award, and Natural Fiber Welding's patented MIRUM and CLARUS products. ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 137 Advancing Therapies for Rare Liver Diseases and Alagille Syndrome with FDA Approved LIVMARLI with Chris Peetz - CEO of Mirum Pharmaceuticals Chris Peetz is the CEO of Mirum Pharmaceuticals, a pharmaceutical company focused on rare liver diseases. They work closely with patients and advocacy groups and have genuine connections which reinforces their sense of urgency to create treatments for liver-related diseases and help to make lives better. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS How was Mirum founded? Our current programs include two different medicines. LIVMARLI (maralixibat) is for the treatment of cholestatic pruritus in patients with Alagille syndrome (ALGS) and another is currently in development for other liver conditions. These programs were being developed by a larger company who decided not to work further on the program. Our co-founder had a relationship with families involved with the clinical studies of maralixibat and, upon seeing how good the patients were doing, decided to start the company and get the program back on course. What does LIVMARLI do and what symptoms does it treat for Alagille patients? LIVMARLI is an oral liquid medicine that blocks the absorption of bile acids in the GI tract. In clinical studies, we've seen the itch that patients experience improves. How do you decide what rare diseases to focus on and what's in the Mirum pipeline? We're currently focused on broadening access to LIVMARLI for ALGS patients and taking what we've learned and applying it to other liver diseases that have similar issues with bile acids. How can rare disease advocacy groups help to push to get treatments approved? The impact patient groups have in working through the regulatory process is massive. They play a big role in providing a voice and awareness to help educate regulators. Patient groups do a lot to educate regulators, but also researchers so they can better understand the complex aspects of a rare disease. The customer journey is blurring the line between digital and physical experiences. Therefore, retailers should look to create consistent, convenient, and inspirational customer experiences in their brick-and-mortar stores while providing the physical touch, engagement, and interaction with products. By investing in AR, VR, AI, and gesture technology, businesses can focus on improving omnichannel shopping experience to optimise engagement opportunities with customers both online and in-store, while also allowing the retailer to get to know the customer better and provide customised offerings such as personalised samples, loyalty points or discounts. I invited Valtech MD Chris Daplyn onto the podcast to share his insights into the technology guiding the future high street. Chris has over 20 years of experience in the digital agency landscape. He is a proven leader with a passion for bringing together diverse talent to connect brands and audiences in relevant and contemporary ways. Before joining Valtech, Chris has led the significant growth of several businesses as managing director of Wunderman, and most recently, as CEO of Mirum in Europe.

Rick Rudzinski sits down with #Clockedin Podcast and talks about Tragic Media, Being Authentic to yourself and much more. Rich has been infatuated with computers from the time he first locked eyes on the sweet 486 Windows machine his uncle got his family in the early 90s. He broke, fixed, and gamed on that computer until he saved enough to build his own machine from scratch. The top of his class in high school, Rich followed his passion for computers while studying at UCSD where he graduated early with an innovative art/technology major (ICAM), with a focus on building interactive experiences with new technologies. After college, Rich worked as a web consultant before becoming a front-end developer at Digitaria (now the global digital agency Mirum). It was at Digitaria that Rich cut his teeth in the web industry, quickly rising to become a master of the front-end, focusing on Drupal and custom Javascript development. After a couple years, Rich began feeling constrained by the growth ceiling of his role, and decided to strike out on his own. He quickly identified a need in the industry for a trusted, scalable engineering firm to help agencies and businesses with technical website projects. Rich created Tragic in 2009, first focusing as a white-label development consultants for agencies across the US. After several years, the company pivoted to helping growing businesses and startups solve their biggest technology challenges from websites to applications to the cloud to IoT and beyond.Rich brings over 15+ years of enterprise software development and consulting, a focus on solving problems and streamlining processes with software, and the unique ability to translate very technical concepts to non-technical leads. Mitch Joel is a visionary. Global brands like Google, Starbucks, Shopify and General Electric, look to Mitch to tell them what's on the horizon of change. His accomplishments are too many to mention but include being the author of several books including Six Pixels of Separation and CTRL ALT Delete, he is a world renown speaker and Founder of Six Pixels Group, he sold his agency Twist Image to WPP after nurturing it for close to two decades, and most recently he was the President of Mirum; a global agency operating in 25 countries with over 3000 employees. Suffice it to say he has a lot to share. Today we cover subjects such as following your instincts in business, what he sees as the clear innovations that will follow the global pandemic, and why remote learning is nothing compared to the real thing. PS- he's also the good friend of Scott Stratten and Ron Tite and is as likeable and gracious, as them both!
The bar has never been lower to start a business by going Direct to Customer, but that doesn't change what the pillars of business are. Direct to Customer brands leverage their true purpose, technology, data, content, and speed to market in astonishing ways. Now, you can too. Brace for impact. Mitch Joel, Founder of Six Pixels Group, is our guest this week. He is one of the amazing speakers at the Conquer Local 2020 Conference in beautiful Montreal. Big and small business need to take it next level by going Direct to the Customer Customer. What do billion dollar companies like Kylie Cosmetics and Dollar Shave Club know that Starbucks and Walmart did not? Mitch explains why these startups quickly disrupted industries that took their competitors decades to decode. This new breed of Direct to Consumer brands has changed the dynamics of business today, What are these companies doing that is so disruptive? Mitch gives us the goods on what you need to know today about the power of direct to consumer brands, and how to build one and/or how to act like one (whether you are in B2C or B2B). Mitch believes that the fundamental traditional Four P's of Marketing - Product, Price, Place, Promotion - are still relevant in today's digital realm. Do you agree? Mitch Joel is Founder of Six Pixels Group - an advisory, investing and content producing company that is focused on commerce and innovation (although he prefers the title, "Media Hacker"). Prior to Six Pixels Group, Mitch spent close to two decades building, running and (eventually) selling his business. He was President of Mirum – a global digital marketing agency operating in 25 countries with close to 3000 employees. Mirum is owned by WPP. Mitch has been named one of the top 100 online marketers in the world, and was awarded the highly prestigious Top 40 Under 40.

More about Fran Fran Luckin is the Chief Creative Officer of Grey Africa and a member of the ten-person Grey Global Creative Board.Fran started out as an apprentice copywriter at the Jupiter Drawing Room following an interview in which she managed to distract CEO Graham Warsop’s attention away from her dismal portfolio by talking about books. Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Do you feel like growing and scaling is always a struggle? Need to differentiate yourself from other agencies? Finding success as an agency owner isn't easy. But with the right mindset, you can hit the 8-figure mark and even power through an eventual agency acquisition. Whether you want to grow your agency fast or plan on growing it to sell, you need to hear from the one and only Mitch Joel, who's done it all. In today's episode, we'll cover: 3 steps to an 8-figure agency. How to power through an agency acquisition. #1 way to differentiate your agency. Today, I talked with Mitch Joel, co-founder of Mirum and founder of Six Pixels Group. Joel is a marketing superstar. He was one of Canada's Top 40 under 40, does keynotes for top brands, and has a best-selling book, Six Pixels of Separation. Mitch also sold his agency Mirum to WPP (a.k.a the world's largest ad agency). And he's on the show to talk about how he was able to grow, sell, and move on from his agency. 3 Steps to an 8-Figure Agency For many agencies, the 8-figure mark is the "we made it!" moment. But how do you get there? Honestly, everyone's path is a little different. That being said, here are 3 universal steps you'll probably need to make. Take on the right partner: There are two things that make a partner great. They need to have the same goals, and they need to compliment your weaknesses. If you're a master salesperson and you're looking for an agency partner, don't look for a salesperson. Find someone who is amazing at the things you're really bad at. Otherwise, you may both end up trying to play to the same tune. And that can lead to a nasty breakup. Get a marquee client: Landing your first big client can completely reshape your agency. You can go from pennies to dollars overnight. It only takes on business with a few friends to grow your agency fast. There's a misconception that you have to have tons of clients to grow. That's not true. You just need a couple of good ones. And they don't even have to big per se! But they do need to be able to pay your agency what you're worth. Have the right philosophy: You need to be scale-focused. What does that mean? It means that your processes need to be capable of handling scale. Think about your ability to support large-scale projects with big clients. If you feel like your foundation is weak, you need to build it up before you take on any big clients. Don't just chase big fish without a big hook. You'll get pulled overboard. How to Power Through An Agency Acquisition There's another way to "make it" without hitting 8-figures. Getting your agency acquired is the dream for many of you. It happened to me, and it happened to Mitch. But what do you do when it actually happens? Your first instinct may be to go out and spend the cash. Don't do that! You have to wait until the acquisition is 100% finalized before you celebrate. The entire process will take a while. And you need to be focused on continuing to grow your agency AND focusing on your new "biggest client" — the company acquiring your agency. Force yourself to wait to celebrate. Afterward, you have to get used to not calling the shots. It's tough. You can always do what I did; go start a podcast. It gives you back some of the control you're used to. Plus, you get to help people out. It's a win-win! #1 Way to Differentiate Your Agency Are you tired of being a "me too" agency? Then change your philosophy. STOP trying to be like your competition and you do you. Don't be like everyone else, but instead figure where you stand on these four things that set you apart from every other agency: Trust Empathy Chemistry Authority How can you create a differentiate using these four pillars to stand apart? First, create trust with your clients by showing tons of empathy. Develop amazing internal chemistry that is evident in the way you carry out your core values. And display the level of authority that conveys domination in your area of expertise. Then, use your messaging (website, social posts, etc.) to display this differentiation to your prospects. We sat down with Greg Crockart, Business Director for the Mirum Agency (part of the Wunderman Thompson group), to get his thoughts on three hot topics. Artificial Intelligence, 5G and privacy are not just impacting the tech industry, but will drastically change the way marketers do their jobs. We are entering a transformative time in the marketing and advertising space. Greg shares his perspective on: In-store experiences merging with digital and getting ever so personal. Out-of-home advertising becoming customized by micro-demographic changes within different dayparts and updating in real-time. Addressing privacy, not as an afterthought but, as a fundamental issue built in from the start. Sources of inspiration for marketers and creative thinkers. Mitch Joel Show Notes Mitch Joel is Founder of Six Pixels Group – an advisory, investing and content producing company that is focused on brands, commerce and community. He has been called a marketing and communications visionary, interactive expert and community leader (he prefers the title “Brand Hacker”). He is also an entrepreneur, author, journalist, investor, trusted advisor, and passionate speaker who connects with people worldwide by sharing his insights on business transformation and marketing innovation. He has been named one of the top 100 online marketers in the world, and was awarded the highly prestigious Top 40 Under 40. Prior to Six Pixels Group, Mitch spent close to two decades building, running and (eventually) selling his business. He was President of Mirum – a global digital marketing agency operating in 25 countries with close to 3000 employees. Mirum is owned by WPP. Most passionate about Right now is an interesting time for me. I had been building and running with three business partners a digital marketing agency called Mirum that I recently left as of July 1st. I’m now in a new venture, which is called 6 Pixels Group, which is a business based off my blog and podcast, Six Pixels of Separation, but it’s more of a holding company for a whole bunch of things I’ll be working on. Mitch’s best advice about approaching customers I’ve spent a lot of time out in the world, sharing and connecting, and I think that’s the primary way people find and connect to me. I’ve spent a lot of time doing work for non-profits and volunteering. I’ve been very fortunate, and I’m playing a bit of a long game here, I’m really doing my best to not think immediately about what the issues are but instead how I can push things forward. Businesses need somebody to help them figure out how to get better consumers, and that’s the type of game I want to be a part of. I think you really need to understand and live your purpose. When you have a purpose that’s very specific as a business, your values, your mission, and not just the pedantic words you put on a sign, but the ones you live and breath, those are the ways that people truly believe or see a level of differentiation. So, I try to figure out what the differentiation is; it’s very hard to have something completely unique. Once you figure out what your angle is, it’s easier to say no to the types of businesses that aren’t right for you. I think, a lot of times, entrepreneurs get trapped because it’s hard. I’ve started many ventures and I know at the beginning you want to take everything and go for everything and it’s hard to do that really well. Biggest failure with a customer I was part of an agency business for over 15 years and you lose a lot more than you win, so I think the overall process of pitching would be the one. You have to have a very thick skin, you’re looking at it from the prospective of ‘you’ve answered everything perfectly, you’ve met them, there’s good chemistry’, but you still didn’t win the business. So, when you’re in the agency business, that question is a strange one because it’s all about spending most of your days losing and not winning the client, and not being successful. Once you have the client, the challenge is keeping them and trying to maintain that level because other people are knocking on that door. So when you ask ‘was there one failure?’ There’s many and they happen every single year because you’re counting on that to grow and maintain the business. It’s a constant slog when you are in the agency world. Biggest success due to the right customer approach Historically, over building the business that we did for over 15 years and trying to introduce different types of technologies and newer things to more traditional businesses. There’s just a process in place. So, when you talk about an error that was made, once the error is identified, we would get on the phone right away,...

Join Priscilla McKinney, CEO and Momma Bird at Little Bird Marketing as she talks with author, prolific writer and marketing guru, Mitch Joel. As the President of Mirum, a global digital marketing agency operating in close to 20 countries, he has earned the right to direct huge brands as they navigate digital marketing. He talks openly about how the marketing industry must come to grips with how consumers adopt quickly to technology while agencies and brands tend to lag behind. Since Mitch is a prolific speaker to the likes of LEGO, Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Twitter, Oracle, Nestle, Procter and Gamble, Unilever and more, his ideas have been put to the test. He breaks down complex strategies by focusing on three points on his "bull’s-eye" approach. Listen in for more of his musings on the nuance between the art and science of marketing. More than anything, Mitch believes in his work as craft and labors under the conviction that he simply wants to create things that are deeply meaningful to him. He writes, and challenges us to live our own truth as it rings true to us regardless of how it is received. In that way, he prefers the more creative approach to the absolute embrace of formulaic success. Follow Mitch's blog and be sure to subscribe to his fantastic podcast, Six Pixels of Separation. Welcome to episode #554 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #554 - Host: Mitch Joel. Sometimes, in life, you get lucky. You meet someone that you have always admired, and you become fast friends. I've been with my talent bureau for over a decade (hey Speaker's Spotlight). Each year they have a holiday party for staff, speakers and friends. I always have the best of intentions to go, but I've never been. This past December, I finally went. While standing in the darkish and loud office space, Neil Pasricha came over and introduced himself. I've known about Neil for a long while. I knew him as the hugely popular #1 bestselling author of The Book Of Awesome and The Happiness Equation. I knew him as one of the most popular TED speakers in the world. I knew him, because he used to work at Walmart in their leadership development division (and Walmart was a client of Mirum). I knew him as a very popular speaker on the topic of happiness, authenticity and living a life with meaning. Still, we never had the chance to connect - one-on-one and in our protein forms. Until now. Neil is also known for his blog (that started this all) called, 1000 Awesome Things. Now, he's focused on The Institute For Global Happiness and recently gave a brand new (and awesome) TED Talk called, How do you maximize your tiny, short life? Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #549 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #549 - Host: Mitch Joel. Let's start this new year off right, shall we? He's back! Google's Digital Marketing Evangelist, bestselling author (Web Analytics - An Hour A Day and Web Analytics 2.0), powerful blogger (Occam's Razor), friend and marketing big brain, Avinash Kaushik. His monthly posts may as well be business books, and his insights into what should really count today for marketing is refreshing. He's got an attitude, he is full of passion, and he has some ideas about what we all need to be thinking about in this day and age. More recently, Avinash also lauched his own, personal, e-newsletter titled, The Marketing-Analytics Intersect (you best sign up for it), and we're back to look at what happened in 2016, what we see coming in 2017 and, what's exciting (but isn't going to happen any time soon) in the world of analytics and marketing. Welcome to episode #545 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #545 - Host: Mitch Joel. Very few business thinkers have influenced me as much as Michael Gerber. His best-selling book, The E-Myth, made me rethink everything (from a business and a motivational perspective). It also came at the perfect time... just as Twist Image (now Mirum) was starting to take shape. Originally published in 1995, and now available in fifteen languages, The E-Myth Revisited has become the indispensable handbook for millions of small business owners, franchisors, and entrepreneurs alike. Recently, Gerber continued publishing books like The Dreaming Room (a book that helps entrepreneurs practice a new approach to creative and strategic thinking) then Awakening The Entrepreneur Within and now, Beyond The E-Myth. This is his simple (hard to do) eight-styes process to help entrepreneurs move to a place of working "on" the business instead of "in" it. It's a phenomenal read and Gerber's insights on business success will surprise you. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 49:32. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at iTunes. Welcome to episode #542 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Our team at Mirum has launched a interesting program for InterContinental Hotels & Resorts. It's a series that takes places across multiple InterContinental properties to tell stories that will get consumers excited about what travel brings into their lives (beyond visiting a different city or country). The first part of this program has been focused on the theme of "fascination." With that, our team connected with famed bestselling author, Julie Klam, at the InterContinental New York Barclay's Gin Parlour for a conversation about the power of fascination. Truthfully, I had nothing to do with this project, but jumped at the opportunity to have Julie on this show. I've been a fan of her work for a long time. Julie Klam interned at Late Night with David Letterman and went on to write for the likes of Rolling Stone, Harper's Bazaar, and The New York Times Magazine. She also worked on the VH1 television show Pop-Up Video, where she earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Special Class Writing. She's the author of many narrative non-fiction books like Friendkeeping, Love At First Bark, You Had Me At Woof and Please Excuse My Daughter. Her next book, The Stars In Our Eyes, will look at celebrities, memes and what makes us all so enraptured by those who have influence. So what makes us fascinated? Do we all have the same ability to capture attention like celebrities? Where do great stories come from? Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #495 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. The book Madison Avenue Manslaughter - An Inside View of Fee-Cutting Clients, Profit-Hungry Owners and Declining Ad Agencies, has been sitting - front and center - on my desk since it was released in June of last year. I've been reading it slowly. Very slowly. Trying to deconstruct and define the path for both my agency, Mirum, and this industry that I love so dearly. There is trouble in the air. Disruption is racing through the marketing industry at a pace that is unprecedented. I'm not sure anyone saw the myriad of ways that the agency model is being pushed, pulled, stretched, consolidated and digitized. The author of Madison Avenue Manslaughter is Michael Farmer. Prior to founding Farmer & Company in 1992, Farmer was a strategy consultant with The Boston Consulting Group and a Director of Bain & Company. He has been committed to bringing Bain-like analytical and strategic disciplines to the advertising industry for over two decades, in many diverse regions around the world. He is experienced, insightful and passionate about the world of advertising agencies. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #494 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. The last time that I saw Misha Glouberman was in the mid-eighties. We went to high school together (he was three years older than I was). I had not heard his name until the other week, when our Executive Creative Director at Mirum, Jon Finkelstein, asked me if I ever read the book, The Chairs Are Where the People Go: How to Live, Work, and Play in the City, which was co-authored with Sheila Heti and is a collection of his thoughts. The book was called "a triumph of what might be called conversational philosophy... hilarious and humane" by The New Yorker. Now, Misha is an expert on the subtle arts of negotiation and communication. His presence and work has been called transformative. He is also the host of Trampoline Hall, a lecture series which has sold out every show in its home city of Toronto since its inception, in 2001, and which has toured around North America. ("We love it" -- The Village Voice). In everything he does, Glouberman combines a creative people-cantered approach with analytic rigour: he was previously a software developer, and has a philosophy degree from Harvard. The Agents of Change: SEO, Social Media, and Mobile Marketing for Small Business
You cannot truly learn anything until you have to teach it to somebody else. And with so many platforms out there – blogs, podcasts, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, etc – how do you find the most effective way to reach and advertise to your audience? But more important than knowing where your audience hangs out, you need to find out how your personal voice can lend a different perspective and spin on some of the same information that is and has already been presented and published on the same topic. Mitch Joel is a content marketing gangster and the guy that Google turns to when they want to explain innovation and marketing to some of the top brands in the world. www.agentsofchangecon.com/podcasts/128
Nicola Benedetti reveals ten intriguing facts about Verdi's Requiem
Welcome to episode #480 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. I have read loved and re-read every little book that Marty Neumeier (he's also the Director of Transformation at Liquid Agency) has written. You should too. I use the word "small" in a physical way (it has nothing to do with his content). Marty writes books that you can read in a few hours. They are small and beautifully designed (re: simple). The ideas and depth of the words sink in (re: a wealth of knowledge). Slowly. Over time. He also writes books that you will go back to you. Every year. With joy. With that, I have been spending a lot of time thinking about design thinking. What does it mean to Mirum? What does it means to business? What does it mean to the personal work that I do with my words? What does it mean to our clients? What does it mean to the future of business? A lot of thinking. A lot of "what does it mean"? Currently, I am in the middle of reading the book, The Designful Company by Marty. I am loving it. Much like Marty's other books (The Brand Gap, Zag, The 46 Rules of Genius, and others), it is beautifully designed (typography matters!) and written in an easy-to-understand way. I reached out to Marty for this podcast. He was just launching his latest book, The Brand Flip. Do you have it? You have to get it. Enjoy the conversation... What do you think is the highest accolade an individual in the media industry can receive? Is it a Cannes Lion? A Media Innovation Award? In my opinion, being referred to as a ‘Rockstar’ carries much more weight than any statue ever could. And that’s exactly how Marketing Magazine has described this episode's guest, Mitch Joel. There are many things you can call Mitch: from best-selling author to public speaker, to blogger, to podcaster to media agency president. The list goes on. Today we sit down with Mitch Joel- Canada’s rockstar of Digital Marketing to learn about life growing up in Montreal, working as writer covering the Canadian music scene, co-founding a record label, and being the President of Mirum, a digital media agency that started out life at Twist Image.
Mitch Joel is one of the leading voices in digital media. He is the host of the Six Pixels of Separation podcast, author of 2 bestselling books and co-founder of Twist Image, the leading Canadian marketing agency that was acquired last year by the largest agency conglomerate in the world to form a global agency called Mirum, where Mitch serves as president. On today's show, Mitch and Danny explore some of the most important existential questions that modern, online entrepreneurs have to struggle with and come to some inspiring and insightful conclusions. Key Points At 2:44 - Mitch talks through the life cycle of the market online, starting with the iconic 'publishing button,' and how it's become something very different these days. At 5:47 - While everyone agrees that the cream rises to the top, Mitch goes into why he thinks that now is still a fantastic time for indie publishers to make their mark. At 12:46 - Mitch talks about what he thinks would happen if he were to have just now started his blog, and contrasts that with the wild success of others who are newer to the online realm. At 18:46 - Danny and Mitch discuss Seth Godin's book, 'The Dip,' and talk about how to know the difference between a dip, and a dead end. At 25:18 - Seth Godin's book, 'The Dip,' and what Billy Idol and Mitch Joel have in common, and how lunacy could easily factor in. Enjoying the podcast? Help us spread the word! A few months ago, I heard Mitch Joel in conversation with Seth Godin on the podcast Six Pixels of Separation, and I knew I had to have him back on to chat about careers, fear, failure, and building a body of work that is substantive. Mitch is president of Mirum, a global digital marketing agency, and author of the book Ctrl Alt Delete. We talk about career paths, embracing the "squiggle", and the line between following your muse and being flighty. Who is on the show today: In today's episode, we host Mitch Joel. Mitch is the President of a Digital media agency – Mirium. He is the author of two books –Ctrl Alt Delete and Six Pixels of Separation. He was a part of my list of insanely interesting people I discovered in 2014. He hosts a podcast called the Six Pixels of Seperation and blogs every single day here. Why is he on the show When Google wants someone to explain the latest developments in marketing to the top brands in the world, they bring Mitch Joel to the Googleplex in Mountain View, California. Marketing Magazine dubbed him the “Rock Star of Digital Marketing” and called him, “one of North America's leading digital visionaries.” Back in 2006 he was named one of the most influential authorities on blog marketing in the world. Mitch Joel is President of Mirum – a global digital marketing agency operating in close to 20 countries with over 2000 employees (although he prefers the title, Media Hacker) What are we talking about In this free wheeling conversation, we talk about a wide range of topics around digital marketing for not digital savvy entrepreneurs and CEO's. He gives us a work book on how to go about crafting a digital marketing strategy and succeed. Most important learnings from the conversation: The importance of doing the basics right – Know who your customers are and what they like and don't like, where they hang out and what are they concerned about. He also shares that digital strategy is not separate from the marketing strategy and it is just a part of the overall marketing plan. He also talks about how CEO's and business owners need to engage with multiple agencies and know clearly what they want to. You can reach Mitch on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
This is a test episode of The Spark & The Art podcast. It is basically my Born To The World EP with a silly intro and outro. It is the first time you'll hear the new Spynoh Creativity audio mnemonic. Fun. This is the long description so I thought I would add some longer text. Wait let me go get some lorem ... okay I'm back. This should make it long enough. Berlin Philharmonic Master Classes: Mastering Orchestral Repertoire
Berlin Philharmonic principal trombone player Thomas Leyendecker coaches Amanda Logue on the "Tuba mirum" trombone solo from Mozart's Requiem. Select members of the Berlin Philharmonic woodwind and brass sections led two days of master classes focusing on orchestral repertoire and audition preparation. Participating young artists attended panel discussions with the master class leaders and heard the Berlin Philharmonic in performance, led by Sir Simon Rattle, at Carnegie Hall.
