Jeff Archibald is the Managing Director of Paper Leaf, a full-stack website, app, and software development firm. Their products have received awards and accolades, and they are also recognized as one of Canada's top firms by Strategy Magazine and Clutch. Takeaways As an Agency Owner, you need to step out of roles that are not strategic and uses your time productively. It is difficult, but you have to make that shift from a tactical to a strategic mindset. This is quite crucial for the early growth phase. Organize your processes, divest the skill sets amongst the group, and become a profitable company. This is the right way to structure a business vis-a-vis someone simply showing an interest in acquiring your business. In case someone does show up, be a willing participant in those conversations When considering an acquisition offer, do your due diligence, identify the financial red flags and ensure that any risks that you're taking are mutually shared. “You need to understand that you're going to have to take on some risk, and the acquiring party is going to have to take on some risk. But if those balances ever get out of whack, then you need to be willing to walk away.” - Jeff To make your life easier, hire an attorney and an accountant, even if you happen to be familiar with the legalities of an acquisition. Phil is joined by strategic effectiveness experts John Bradley and Carrie Bradley to discuss how to convey insights through data. Shared understanding is essential during change. People must align on the why, what, when, where, and how of the initiative. Everything must make sense, or doubt, resistance, and risk seep in. Data is the foundation of knowledge. It is the raw materials of pattern recognition, insights and fact-based decision making. A challenge is that most people struggle to make sense of data. They think in stories instead of numbers and need context for data within their frames of reference to have meaning. Without personal connections to new concepts, people may become confused and distrustful of your insights and your recommended way forward. So, how do you convey insights from data so that they are understood, build consensus and lead to positive action? “If you look at the past decade, I’d be challenged to see another industry as disrupted by technology as speaking.” - Mitch Joel (click to tweet) Today, most brands and businesses are also trying to be a media company. Selling a product or service is no longer enough. Whether it’s an engaging social media presence or valuable email marketing campaign—this new expectation of content creation provides an unprecedented marketing opportunity for companies all over the world. However, if we’re not careful, we can fall into the abyss of marketing noise; following templates and sticking to the norms will mask your authentic voice and have you hidden in the crowd. That’s why on today’s episode of Steal the Show, we are joined by Mitch Joel live at Heroic Public Speaking HQ to discuss content creation. Mitch has been called one of North America’s leading visionaries and the “rockstar of digital marketing” by Strategy Magazine. When brands like Google, Starbucks, Shopify, and GE want to leverage technology to better connect with their customers, they call Mitch. His first book, Six Pixels of Separation, named after his successful blog and podcast is a business and marketing bestseller. His second book, CTRL ALT Delete was named one of the best business books of 2013 by Amazon. Listen to this episode to learn the intellectual significance that Mitch brings to the table, and how you can apply Mitch’s wisdom to your brand. “You have to find the thing that makes you want to create content.” - Mitch Joel (click to tweet) Steal The Points Create content that is you, rather than what you think the audience wants. Find a talent agency with speakers who speak on similar topics. There will always be opportunity to write and speak about what’s next. Be mindful of when criticizing other work takes the place of working on your own. Watch the best speakers and read the best authors if you want to speak or write.
