Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
So far we've talked (and written) twice about character misbeliefs. Then we took a baby break because we're like that, but we're back on it now, my friends. Those earlier posts are linked below. First off to recap, the big lie or character misbelief in your story is what motivates them or causes them to act in a certain way. If your character grows in a positive way, during the story, they usually realize by the end that the lie was a big ole lie and not a glorious simple truth and voila—life is better. Your lie has to move the plot forward and it has to relate to your story's theme. According to LitCharts, theme is just “a universal idea, lesson, or message explored throughout a work of literature.” So a character lie is something like “MIGHT MAKES RIGHT” because your character believes this with all their mighty heart. The theme might be love is more powerful than might. Often, the theme disproves the lie, right? Cool. Now, when you're building characters for your novel and building the plot around them, you want to use that theme and that lie to make your story resonate, to make your readers or audience feel for the characters involved and root for them to stop lying to themselves and get some wisdom (in the form of the story's theme). So basically, you find the theme and the opposite (kind of tweaked) is usually the character's misbelief. So, here's how it goes, step by step for those of you who like steps: Figure out the theme. Think of what's the opposite of the truth of that theme (the lie). Think about why your main character believes this hideous lie. Write a little scene about it. Call it backstory. Think deeply about whether it actually needs to be in the story AS SCENE or if it can be sprinkled in. Think about other moments that made your poor honey of character believe this BS. Think about how believing this lie has totally messed up your character's life right now in the story. Figure out if your main does something that they think sparks joy because of this BS lie but they are totally wrong? How does your character go after a goal that deals with the lie or the theme? This is the plot of your book. Cool, right? DOG TIP FOR LIFE Every once in awhile reassess the things you believe about yourself and the world. Are they really true? Why do you even believe them? What's the theme of your life? It sounds like we've had some Mary Jane, but seriously, as Kira Newman at the Greater Good asks, “If your life were a movie, where would the plot be headed right now? “You may not be immortalized in film anytime soon, but your life is still a story. According to psychologists, we all have an internalized narrative that explains how we became the person we are today and where we are headed tomorrow. Like any Hollywood blockbuster, this narrative has settings, scenes, a plot, characters, and themes.” WRITING TIP OF THE POD A lot of books are flat not because they aren't clever or the plot doesn't have cool things. They are flat because the characters are. The characters are often flat because there's no big lie that's part of their motivation. PLACE TO SUBMIT Exploration and Recovery: Mental Illness and The Awakenings Review Year-round “The Awakenings Review is an award-winning literary magazine committed to publishing poetry, short stories, nonfiction, and photography by writers, poets, and artists who write from experience with mental illness: either in themselves, family members, or friends. Please read our submission guidelines at www.AwakeningsProject.org.” RANDOM EXERCISE FOR THEME Over on the Reedsy blog, there is a post about finding your novel's theme. You can read it in full over there, but we're going to encapsulate it here: Write nouns that deal with your novel. Hobbits. Friendship. Powerful ring. Hot elves. Pick one to be your center noun. Power. Make a thematic statement with that theme. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Melissa Gorga's Lookers Gentleman's Club Ex-Colleague Nicole Carrasquillo steps Behind The Rope. Yes, Nicole worked with Melissa Gorga at Lookers Gentleman's Club in Elizabeth, NJ way back when before she was Mrs. Joey Gorga, before she was Tre's sister in law, before RHONJ and before the infamous “Strippergate” which had, has and probably always will have Melissa claiming she was not a stripper. Nicole says, “not so fast” to Ms. Gorga as she details the inner workings of Lookers answering questions such as how often Melissa worked, what did she wear, why she denies various facts surrounding “Strippergate”, the clubs owner / manager's appearance on RHONJ, the fallout on RHONJ and in real life after “Strippergate” for many parties involved, Joey Gorga's frequent Lookers' visits, how Joey met and courted Melissa and finally, hopefully, once and for all, did Melissa Gorga strip at Lookers. Nicole spills the tea on this topic that just will not go away, at least for today, that is. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
On our last podcast and post, we talked about the character misbelief, which is basically what the character in your story believes that isn't real or true. The big component of this is that your character believes this big lie about life or about themselves because of something that hurt them in the past. The thing that hurt them in the past that causes that big untruth that dictates their lives is often called a wound. Whew. So much lingo. False belief/big lie Wound/thing that hurt them in the past So, the cool thing is that you can use these false beliefs to make a better story. We talked about those false beliefs in our last podcast, but it could be that they aren't lovable, they are unworthy, that might always makes right. The wound makes this a logical thing for them to think even though it's super wrong. The big trick is that you want to show this to the reader rather than tell them. You can't just write: Carrie cried because she was unlovable, which she knew because Steve Sills told her so at the seventh grade dance. And you can't just write, “I'm only doing this,” Carrie said, “because of what Steven Sills told me at that seventh grade dance.” You want to show these beliefs rather than tell them. Instead, you want to show the reader by how the main character reacts to something BECAUSE of their false belief. It's all about our character's mind tricking them into lies. That's called a cognitive distortion in real life, right? There's a great post by Jami Gold that talks about 15 ways to show false beliefs in our characters. And honestly, they are so much like real life that it kind of hurts. She talks a lot in that post about Michael Hauge who talks a lot about this and is kind of the guru of false belief. Here we go: 15 Ways to Show False Beliefs in Our Characters (Note that these cognitive distortions are not exclusive. We can use multiple methods to show characters' false beliefs throughout a story, so we don't have to choose just one.) If characters believe X about themselves (e.g., they're unlovable), they might react in one or more of the following ways: Filtering: Magnifying the negative and ignoring the positive They'll dwell on plot events that prove their belief right and they'll gloss over those that prove them wrong. Polarized Thinking: Seeing things in black-or-white They'll deem any attempt to overcome that flaw a failure if it doesn't turn out perfectly. Overgeneralization: Basing conclusions on single piece of evidence They'll pick out a single word, act, or event to reinforce their belief. Jumping to Conclusions: Assuming others' feelings or motivations They'll assume others' actions are driven by their flaw. Catastrophizing: Expecting disaster to strike They'll worry a minor mistake due to their flaw will cause great tragedy. Personalization: Taking everything as a direct reaction to them They'll see themselves and their flaw as the cause for everything others do or say. Control Fallacies: Seeing themselves as a victim They'll either think fate forces them to be a victim of their flaw, or they'll make themselves into victims by accepting blame for everything because of their flaw. Fallacy of Fairness: Judging life by “fairness” They'll expect things to turn out positively to make up for the pain “life” inflicted with their Wound. Blaming: Blaming others for troubles They'll think others are responsible for the pain of their Wound. Shoulds: Prioritizing “rules” They'll set up rules for how to deal with situations caused by their belief and feel guilty when they violate those rules. Emotional Reasoning: Believing feelings automatically true They'll trust their feelings about their belief above all other evidence. Fallacy of Change: Expecting others to change They'll expect others to change to accommodate their belief and think their happiness depends on meeting that goal. Global Labeling: Extreme and emotional mislabeling They'll exaggerate and overgeneralize their flaw to the point of creating unhealthy emotions. Always Being Right: Being right is most important trait They'll argue about their belief with the insistence that they're right—no matter the costs (including to others' emotions). Heaven's Reward Fallacy: Expecting actions to “pay off” They'll expect life to reward their sacrifice in the name of their belief. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Sometimes a misbelief can be helpful. Pogie thinks she's a bad ass. She is not. SHOUT OUT! The music we've clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License. It's easier to be served than it is to serve. But God's called us all to be servants, not only to Him, but to each other. Having faith in Jesus should lead to an attitude of obedience and a heart of service. We were put here not only to be His hands and His feet, but to be His eyes and His ears -- to see people for who they really are, and to listen to their stories.
While it is easier to be served than to serve, God has called us all to be servants to Him and to each other. Our faith in Jesus should lead to actions of obedience and service if our faith is truly genuine. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/640/29

Welcome to the Digital Tourism Show Episode 268 and in this 5-min workshop, I am focusing on the sales process for enquiry based products. This has been a question that has come up a lot lately, not just from our own customers but from other tourism business owners looking for this sort of advice online. Although some of you reading may not believe this, the amount of potential revenue I see being flushed down the drain is frightening. So many potential customers are either not being contacted at all, or they only receive one form of communication and then are forgotten about. The excuse I hear a lot is “I just did not have the time to contact everyone who enquires”. Let me apologise in advance if what I am about to say seems blunt but it is absolutely essential to convert the leads generated from marketing — especially during the pandemic. “Having no time” is something I can sympathise with during this chaotic time. I am a business owner myself so I understand how busy things can be, but it seems counterintuitive to throw away potential revenue that your business could make. I am sure we have all been there at some stage, but take a closer look at what you do on a daily basis. Really look hard at what you do. Could you spend 1 hour less watching your favourite show on Netflix if it meant you could close a few extra bookings? You probably could. Human beings are so good at procrastinating. If you took some simple steps to rearrange your daily routine your business could perform better in many areas. For example, in my business I have set up some automated tools to take care of the initial stages of my sales process. I also divide my day into chunks. I look at my email between 8am-9am and then later between 4pm-5pm. I spend a few hours helping my team with our own customers and then the last few hours on my business, creating strategies, looking at new opportunities as well as writing my thoughts about the industry, including this very guide you are reading now. The day-to-day is delegated to my team. I may be preaching to the converted here, but it really does help when trying to stay on top of sales leads to schedule in a section of structured activity each day, focusing on any leads generated. Dedicating even just one hour on sales per day can make all the difference. With this episode, my hope is that it can show you how to interact with your potential customer in an automated way, with just a few in-person touch points along the way. Not only that, I have provided a basic process guide and email templates that you can use today. Over the next 5 days, and following my guide, I would like you to go through your sales process and see how you can make improvements. On day 1, check all your enquiry forms on your site are set up correctly and ask the right questions. On day 2, Set-up the automated emails to your email platform of choice. Day 3, If you wish to try Facebook Form ads, set this up, targeting the right audience. My book, Lookers into Bookers, which you can download for free, provides advice on how to create Facebook Ads. On Day 4, Using Zapier, connect your website form(s) and Facebook forms to your email platform and test that this works. Guides on how to set up Zapier, and other platforms are widely available online, or take a look at my book which has some step-by-step guides. On Day 5, Launch and test the automated sales process and be ready to interact with your potential customer at key stages. What I am providing you is a basic process and you may have more complicated systems, but I hope it inspires you to take a good look at your sales process and make it more efficient. I would never go for a full automated process as you do need that human interaction, but what I propose in this guide will help make the process easier with a little upfront work. Let me know how you get on. Important Announcements and the Future of The Digital Tourism Show Welcome everyone to the Digital Tourism Show, the first of 2022 so Happy New Year to you all and hope you had a fantastic break. I wanted to use the time in this episode to provide you all with a few exciting announcements of things I am looking to launch in 2022, as well as an update on the future of this very show, so let's start with the Digital Tourism Show. When I first launched this show back in January 2017, my main aim was to help educate tourism businesses on effective ways to grow their business through online marketing, and many of the episodes have fulfilled this promise. The show then evolved into providing insights from others in the industry, which in itself has added incredible value, but for me personally, I feel the show has lost its original focus and I want to go back to its roots, so this year, the show will be providing a lot less of these interview style shows and go back to providing actionable marketing advice. This will start with a new series of 5-min workshops, which will be launching in the coming weeks. I will do a separate video next week on what this will entail. The second big announcement is that I am currently working on a follow up to my book, How To Turn Your Lookers Into Bookers, entitled, ‘The Lookers into Bookers Marketing Blueprint.' The aim of this book is to guide tourism businesses through a full marketing strategy from start to finish, highlighting each step of the consumer's purchase journey and how you can guide them towards booking with your company. Not only that, it will help advise on what you should do during experience and after. The book will highlight a real company and the journey they will take to become successful, as well as highlight the results of the strategy they will take. The book will come with actionable tasks and worksheets so you can implement this in your own business. The third announcement is that following the book, I will be launching ‘The Lookers into Bookers Marketing Blueprint' workshops. These will be in-person workshops that will use the blueprint from the book, to further guide those who wish to take their business to the next level. More on that in the coming months. These are just some of the initiatives that I have planned for 2022 and more will be announced soon so please do keep on the lookout for more updates coming soon. Until then, stay safe and keep positive as I do feel 2022 will be the year we are all wishing it to be. A special welcome to the new partners who have signed up in the last week or two. Great to have you as part of the conversation.I suggested in last week's post that perhaps the key moment in the growth of Christian disciples is when we start to look left:I lift my head up, and open my eyes, and see the multitudes all around me that need to move to the right—to take steps towards knowing Christ or growing in Christ. And I realise that God has called me, in my own weak and faltering way, with my own particular relationships and opportunities, to help those people take one step in that rightward direction. The more we move right, the more we look left, and long to see others take a step to the right. The question we left hanging was simple enough: How does this happen? How do I become that sort of ministry-hearted person?! And (as a leader) how do I see more of those sorts of left-looking people emerge in the congregation? The answer is simple but not easy. If this looking-leftness is a function of moving-rightness, then we already know how God moves people to the right—it's through what the Reformers called the means of grace and what we in our love of alliteration call the four Ps (Presenting the Word, Prayerfully, in and through People, Persevering in Practice over time). These are the means God gives us for spiritual growth. There are no others. So to see more people become left-lookers, just prescribe the four Ps, twice daily after food, and all will be well. To which you might say, “Well we've been doing that already, and the patient isn't showing much improvement! We preach the word and pray and so on, but there still seem to be lots of people who are stuck in a complacent, self-focused Christianity. Isn't there a special pill for those people?!” Well, yes and no. Two important further points need to be made. Firstly, while the treatment is never anything other than the four Ps, the four Ps aren't uniform or one-dimensional. The ‘whole counsel of God' is rich and multi-faceted, and we apply different aspects and implications of it to different people at different times. That's what ‘moving each person one step to the right' really means—meeting each person where they are, and applying the word of God to them in their particular circumstance, with its particular implications and outworkings. There is an order to the teaching—basic principles followed by meatier instruction. And this also intersects with the different levels of maturity and understanding that each person has. As Richard Baxter puts it (riffing on Hebrews 5:11-14): The ministerial work must be carried on prudently and orderly. Milk must go before strong meat; the foundation must be laid before we attempt to raise the superstructure. Children must not be dealt with as men of full stature. Men must be brought into a state of grace before we can expect the works of grace from them. (The Reformed Pastor, II.2.3)At some point in the growth of every Christian it's time to ‘move them to the right' in this specific area—that is, to help them see that they are not just disciples but also disciple-makers; to teach them about the privilege and joy that every Christian has in seeking to move everyone around them to the right through the four Ps, within the amazing plan of God. How will Christians know and embrace this wonderful truth if they are not taught it?This teaching can and should happen within the course of regular Sunday preaching, as we teach people of God's extraordinary purposes in Christ, and as we expound those passages that particularly speak of our part in that plan. However, occasional references in sermons won't be sufficient. We need to bring this particular word to the people who need to hear it, and take the time to help them hear it, understand it, learn it and embrace it. This might happen in a number of ways:* at special seminars, weekends-away or teaching times that address this particular topic;* in small groups (either occasional groups formed for this purpose or as part of the regular small group diet); * in one-to-one meetings;* using books and other resources that bring together the Bible's teaching on this subject. (Incidentally, this is why I wrote The Course of Your Life study material, and the little book that goes along with it, The Thing Is. I was struggling to find good study resources or material that taught about this particular area in a coherent and helpful way. See more on this in the PS below.)The framework or method or context will vary—what's important is that we intentionally teach, apply and work through this aspect of God's Word, to our own hearts and to others. Secondly, however, we become this sort of left-looking person as we put the word into practice—as we learn the practicalities of how to move others to the right, and begin to actually do so. Hebrews 5 says something about this as well. “Solid food is for the mature”, it says, “for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil” (Heb 5:14). As they implement and practise what they have learned, the mature develop muscles of discernment and understanding. It's maturity not just in solid-food-knowledge—although it is certainly that. It's also maturity in the lived practice of that knowledge. People learn to be left-lookers by beginning to exercise those muscles; by taking part in the action. This could be by beginning to read the Bible with someone else; or by taking some steps to pray for and talk with their neighbours; or by joining the welcoming team on Sunday mornings; or by door-knocking their street; or in a thousand other ways, both structured and informal. This is what ‘training' really is—teaching a new way of thinking that generates a new practice or way of life, and then growing in that practice by doing it. And this is where ‘training courses' can be extremely useful if they are used well—if they help us to prayerfully teach God's word on a particular topic, and then provide opportunities to practise and grow in that knowledge by implementing it. In my experience, moving people to the right in this crucial area—that is, helping them become loving, ministry-hearted, left-lookers—often fails by neglecting one or both of the two facets above:* We fail to teach clearly, compellingly and personally about the nature of the Christian life as a disciple-making life. We work hard at recruiting people to serve in different ways, to be part of ministry teams, to ‘get involved'—but we don't prayerfully address the heart with the powerful and sharp word of God about why we should serve and what ‘service' really is (it's moving people to the right). * We do teach about ‘moving right and looking left', but fail to provide practical training in how to do it, along with structured opportunities for people to learn by doing. The result of one or both of these failures is the landscape that many of us battle with in our churches. We constantly struggle to find people willing to lead or be involved in the various ministry structures or teams we run. And those who do get involved often suffer from a lack of joy, perseverance and right-moving intentionality in the work they are doing. The underlying issue is both spiritual and practical. We need to plant and water, and do the weeding and organize our farm activities—and pray that God would move more and more people to the right, so that they start to look left.PSAs always, I'd be interested (and we would all benefit) from you sharing your own experiences and reflections about growing ‘left-lookers' in your congregation. Drop a comment on the website or simply reply to this email with your thoughts and questions. Sometimes you only really realise why you've done something after you've done it. Looking back, most of what I've done over the years at Matthias Media has been in service of the principles in this article—to provide biblical teaching and training resources to help Christians become left-lookers, and then to train and equip them for moving others to the right through the four Ps. The two resources I mentioned above have a special place in this. The Course of Your Life was my attempt at creating a training framework to revolutionize people's view of their own life as ‘disciple-making disciples'—over time, in a group with others, with practical learn-by-doing elements as well. The Thing Is was the little book version to read alongside the course (or as a lead in or as revision). If you haven't ever checked them out, here are some sample chapters to take a look at: I tried very hard to find an image of Richard Baxter looking left, but this was the closest I could find … This is a public episode.
