When Steve Jackson stopped drinking in 2023 he noticed something odd. As much as non-alc drinks have improved over the past twenty years no one was making a zero proof alternative in the premium wine space. He set out to fix that with Society de la Rassi, which offers a high-end drinking and aesthetic experience at 0.5% ABV. Steve sits down with Greg to talk about positioning his product in the market, the process by which the wine is created, and the ongoing discourse around mocktails and low and no alcohol drinks. Why ARE people drinking less anyway? They put their heads together to get to the bottom of it.Plus, major news out of the northeast! What a month it's been! As Women's HERStory Month comes to a close, I couldn't think of a better way to wrap it up than with a conversation that's redefining inclusivity in food and beverage. Laura Silverman, founder of Zero Proof Nation and Booze Free in DC, is leading the charge in the non-alcoholic beverage movement, proving that choice and inclusion belong at every table. With 17+ years of sobriety, Laura's journey is deeply personal. After struggling with binge drinking in college and getting sober at 24, she saw firsthand how limited and uninspiring the non-alcoholic beverage landscape was. So, she built the resource she wished existed—a global hub connecting people with alcohol-free options, community, and education.

I recently sat down with Betsy Frost, the CEO of Hoplark Brands to talk about drinking less, the NA industry, and why she believes hops are 'magic'. Hoplark brings us the 'Yes And…' which is to say it brings the flavor and the complexity of hops to tea, sparkling water and 0.0 beverages. A range of products that have zero sugar, zero alcohol and zero calories! Betsy shares that hops are a magical ingredient that has basically been ‘held hostage' by the beer makers for hundreds of years. And, Hoplark is taking back hops and bringing the brewing aspect without the fermentation or malt into a new variety of beverages to delight the palate. Frost describes the brewers at Hoplark as a ‘bunch of passionate 'hopheads' who want to ‘free hops from beer'. But, the company philosophy goes beyond hops. Betsy shares in this episode of The Sober Edge Podcast that Hoplark Brands delivers a new way of thinking about alcohol-free beverages - beyond personal choice but offering new and inclusive options. She sees this class of beverages as less ‘anti-alcohol' and more ‘pro-options'. Tune in to hear more of our conversation, including: How Hoplark leaves out the fermentation to create a 0.0 option Her personal philosophy of 'yes and'... Kevin joined us to give us the 4-1-1 about this year's festivities happening on June 15th at Xfinity Live in Philadelphia. To hear all about the festival, along with where to buy tickets, tune in to Food Farms and Chefs! Our next guest, Shayna Minuto, gained a strong knowledge of running an Italian-based cuisine while working in her father's restaurant. After graduating college, Shayna found herself drawn further into the industry, and eventually opened her own concept, Hold My Knots, inside the Gansevoort Market in the Meatpacking District of NYC. After finding increasing success, they crossed the bridge into New Jersey, taking over ownership of her father's restaurant to establish a permanent location for Hold My Knots in Bergen County. Now, Hold My Knots is looking to expand their brand's locations and available Food Trucks to spread the joy of their menu options for carboholics (including GF options) to more areas. We love the combination of food, beverages, and fun! So, we brought Lee Leung (Regional General Manager of Fearless Restaurants) on to help celebrate their Spring menu options, the Kentucky Derby and other special events, and new openings under their restaurant group! Lee also grew up inside her parent's restaurants, and was drawn back into the culinary world after graduating college. Soon after graduating, she began working for restaurant groups with recognizable names. Today, you can find her making all the events at Fearless Restaurant Group's Autograph Brasserie, Triple Crown in Radnor, and Rosalie a delicious and memorable experience!
Our guest Katey Armstrong comes to us with a unique perspective on living alcohol free. Unlike most of our guests Katey didn't grow up struggling with her relationship with alcohol. Katey was actually only an occasional drinker who never really enjoyed it. What Katey did always struggle with, were the objections she continually got every time she said "No" to drinking. 3 years ago Katey realized there was no real reason for her to continue to consume alcohol, she didn't enjoy it nor did it align with her lifestyle as a health & wellness coach, so she gave it up completely. Katey explains to us how she finally found her voice after years of continuing to say "No" to alcohol. It's no surprise that Katey has found many sober curious people gravitating towards her now, as she is a perfect example of what it looks like to be living an abundantly energetic alcohol free life!Follow Katey in Instagram https://www.instagram.com/healthyevolutionbykatey/Check out her website: https://healthyevolution.ca/**Please remember to: Like, Subscribe and leave us a 5-star rating or review. "Dry January" and healthier lifestyle choices are two of the top resolutions we hear you're making, so we asked Chris Carney, the owner of NoProof Seltzer to join us on the show. NoProof is a non-alcoholic energy drink with an orange-citrus flavor, infused with beneficial vitamins, no sugar added, and a light caffeine kick. Chris started his company when he was looking for something that was alcohol free, healthier for you to consume, and offered a caffeine boost - without the unnecessary added sugars and artificial flavors. When he couldn't find anything on the market, he found a way to create his own, and now you can enjoy the benefits and refreshing taste of NoProof Seltzer! Now, we're aware that not everyone participates in "Dry January," so we spoke with one of the co-founders of Bitchin' Kitten Brewery, Michael Crosson. Michael and his wife, Bridgette, started the brewery inspired by her Bridgette-smitten kitten (Shadow) and Michael's enthusiasm of home-brewing. After years of successfully being a home-brewer, Michael landed an apprenticeship at Tindall Road Brewery to gain more experience and knowledge of brewing on a larger scale, and in October of 2021 they opened the doors to their brewpub in Morrisville, PA!Some people like beverages, others have a hankering for something sweet which is why we spoke with Jenny Gardner who owns Philly Waffle Cabin! What is Philly Waffle Cabin? Well, it's one of those delightful joys where you'll smell the tantalizing scent of freshly-made Belgian waffles in the air before you find where the fully mobile version of the Waffle House Cabin franchise is located at. Born from the slopes, this skier-friendly treat can now be wherever you would like! So, if you're familiar with the tasty treats then you already know why you'd want to seek some out--but if you're not, then let us introduce you to Philly Waffle Cabin and why they're so sought-after on (and now off) the slopes!

I wanna preface this episode with the disclaimer that we are talking about sexual assault/rape. This isn't in a violent form by any means, however it is still a nonconsensual sexual encounter. That's not the entire podcast topic/discussion, but enough of it to where we reference it throughout so if that triggers you, please skip this episode. I interview Laura from Zero Proof Nation who was diagnosed with herpes after being date raped by her crush. We talk about how her first sexual experience shaped her arousal to date. She sprung on my that she was bisexual as well for those who want to hear about that experience. Laura also talks about grieving a sex life she never had since she's been living with herpes since 22 years old and has only known dating with that since then, and after 2 hospitalizations from alcohol poisoning decided to be sober. Another big takeaway from this episode is that there is much more to discuss/disclose than a herpes diagnosis. We discuss a vulnerability of Laura's which is her own struggles with her finances and the trouble she may have gotten herself into. Connect with Laura on Instagram @wearesober today! Today's guest is Sean Goldsmith, founder of The Zero Proof, a leading curator, wholesaler, and online retailer of premium non-alcoholic wine and spirits. Sean kicks off today's episode with an overview of the non-alcoholic beverage industry, which has seen a recent boon with more and more people choosing not to drink for health reasons, just like Louisa Nicola explained on the show back in December. He explains the business model, the process of making the beverages, and then I share what some of my favorites were from doing some taste testing before the episode. The new wave of generative artificial intelligence, like ChatGPT and DALL-E, has got the tech business in a frenzy. Venture capitalists are pouring money into new AI startups: Investments in generative AI have already exceeded $2 billion. But there’s lots of unknown unknowns about the innovation. There’s virtually no oversight from the government, and teachers, artists, researchers and others are raising concerns. “There’s so much happening under the hood that we don’t get access to … there needs to be much more transparency,” said Alex Hanna, director of research at the Distributed AI Research Institute. On the show today: why AI is getting so much attention these days, ethical issues with the tech and what lawmakers should focus on when trying to regulate it. Plus, why some say it could exacerbate the climate crisis. In the News Fix, some Kia and Hyundai cars keep getting stolen, and insurance companies are taking notice. Plus, we might spend the most on health care, but health in the United States falls behind other high-income countries by several measures. And, why you might want to get ready for some inflation whiplash. Later, we'll hear from a listener who's pro-ChatGPT when it comes to writing cover letters. And in the spirit of Dry January, Elva Ramirez, author of “Zero Proof: 90 Non-Alcoholic Recipes for Mindful Drinking,” gives us a little history lesson on mocktails (or cleverages). Here’s everything we talked about today: “Investors seek to profit from groundbreaking ‘generative AI' start-ups” from Financial Times Alex Hanna’s “Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000” streamed weekly on Twitch “AI rockets ahead in vacuum of U.S. regulation” from Axios “Robots trained on AI exhibited racist and sexist behavior” from The Washington Post “What jobs are affected by AI? Better-paid, better-educated workers face the most exposure” from the Brookings Institution “Yellen Sees Low Inflation as More Likely Long-Term Challenge” from Bloomberg “State Farm says it has stopped insuring some Kia, Hyundai vehicles” from CBS News “Health care spending in the US is nearly double that of other wealthy nations: report” from The Hill We want to hear your answer to the Make Me Smart question.
