It's a New Musicá episode! This week we spotlight recent releases from León Larregui, Son Rompe Pera, Diamante Electrico, Conexion Divina, Raul Malo, Juanes, Ramona, Bizarrap & Arcangel and more.

Son Rompe Pera started as a street band in Mexico City, but the marimba-playing cumbia punks have spent the past six years honing an electrifying and buzzy mix of modern cumbia, tropical dance beats, hard-hitting punk, psychedelic guitars, traditional Mexican and Colombian rhythms, horns, and a pinch of dub and hip hop, (Kennedy Center program notes.) Their 2020 record Batuco, named after the band's marimba player father, leaned more toward a folkloric, traditional sound by way of nine covers. However, their 2023 record, Chimborazo, delivers 12 originals that really bring the marimba to the mosh pit, including a song where the title is a Chilean expletive and is based on a dream about an alien abduction. Son Rompe Pera slays, in-studio. For over a month the people of Colombia, mostly youth, have been on the streets demonstrating against the far right government of Ivan Duque. What began as a protest against a tax reform that once again favoured the wealthy and punished the popular sectors has become arguably the most significant social uprising in modern times in the country. On the program we'll speak with Blandine Juchs, a human rights defender from Quebec who has been based in Colombia for the past ten years. We'll also hear from Hans Fhilip, a young Colombian photographer who has been on the front lines of the street demonstrations in Bogota as part of the “Primera Linea”.
