Historically, sports have acted as a glue bringing communities together from around the world. In June, the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games hopes to do just that in Orlando, Florida. By building a new serverless application on Amazon Web Services (AWS), the organization is connecting athletes and attendees like never before. The Fix This team chatted with Lonnie Snyder, chief information officer of the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games, to hear how the app is changing the games. From providing virtual cheers to hosting up-to-date schedules and more, the application will act as the single source of truth to help remote or in-person attendees navigate and celebrate the athletes during the 2022 USA Games.
Starting June 5 at Exploria Stadium, the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games will unite more than 5,500 athletes and coaches from all 50 states and the Caribbean and 125,000 spectators. This event will have 19 Olympic-style team and individual sports and 30 events at venues across Orlando. We talked with the president and chief executive officer of this year's Games, JoeDzaluk, about the work that has gone into setting up the event over the past four years, how COVID interrupted and changed planning, how Orlando has adopted the Games as a major event and much more. Stacey Hengsterman, President and CEO Special Olympics New York, visits RadioRotary on the occasion of the Special Olympics Summer Games for New York State being held in Dutchess County, with Vassar College as the principal site. While we think of the Special Olympics primarily in terms of the 30 Olympic –style team and individual sports, the full program of health, education and community building tackles the inactivity, stigma, isolation, and injustice that people with intellectual disabilities face, going beyond sports events enable full social participation for people with intellectual disabilities. Listeners to the program will learn about how some 40,000 volunteers help almost 70,000 athletes—adults as well as children—strive to excel in their chosen sports. The New York State games move from region to region, and Dutchess County has been very excited to host both summer and winter games. The popularity of the Special Olympics has been a big part of “the inclusion resolution,” whose motto is “think differently.” Learn some of the ways you can be a part of this great change. In this first episode of Wild Peace, Deborah Lagasse shares insights into her extraordinary journey raising a son who has managed to shatter all conventional expectations about his autism. Her story will upend any limiting beliefs you might have about autism - or any other "dis"ability for that matter.Deb's son Tyler Lagasse began reading and writing at the age of two, but he was slower to talk and learn social skills. By the age of four he was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, a form of autism. Today at 31, Tyler has won 3 silver medals in golf - the elite division - at the Special Olympics USA games. He also holds 12 gold medals from Special Olympics Massachusetts and is a member of the organization's Hall of Fame. In 2007, he became a Special Olympics Global Messenger. Beyond sports he has accomplished as much. He co-authored a book with his mother, What Do You Say?: Autism with Character, engages in motivational speaking, and is working towards a bachelor's degree in earth, environmental and atmospheric sciences at UMass Lowell. Tyler's story of courage, heart and perseverance is truly amazing. During this fascinating conversation, Deb and I discuss what it was like to raise Tyler. She explains how she approached the challenges and how she (and the whole family) were enlightened as a result. I walked away thinking she should be a motivational speaker, too!
