Researchers and analysts are beginning to ask whether two powerful forces are quietly reshaping how and why people eat: the rise of GLP-1 medications and the constant churn of food trends. What happens when drugs like Ozempic don't just reduce appetite but change how the body processes food, forcing users to rethink nutrition to avoid side effects and maintain balance? Could that shift create new demands the food industry is already preparing to meet? And at the same time, why do consumers continue to chase new diets, ingredients, and health claims month after month? What is driving this persistent search for the next solution, even as advice keeps changing? We examine whether these developments are connected, how pharmaceutical intervention may be accelerating longer-term shifts in food culture, and what it reveals about the forces shaping modern eating habits. Sylvain Charlebois, professor at Dalhousie University and director of its Agri-Food Analytics Lab, and Samantha King, professor and director of the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen's University, discuss nutrition, behaviour, and the emerging questions at the intersection of medicine, markets, and consumer choice.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gut health has become one of the biggest wellness trends online.Everywhere you look, there are:Greens powdersProbiotic supplementsGut cleansesDetox teas“Gut healing” protocolsExpensive wellness drinksRestrictive elimination dietsAnd honestly? It can feel overwhelming trying to figure out what actually supports gut health versus what is simply clever marketing. As a registered dietitian, I think there are some gut health habits that truly can support digestion, energy, and overall wellness. But I also think social media has made gut health way more complicated than it needs to be.The reality is this:You do not need a cabinet full of supplements to support your gut.Let's break down the gut health trends that may actually help — and the ones I personally think are overhyped.Check out the blog post: Gut Health Trends Follow us on INSTAGRAM

Cortisol is getting blamed for basically everything online, and we get why it's tempting: it gives a neat explanation for feeling tired, stressed, bloated, or “off.” But as a family medicine doctor and a nurse, we want to bring the conversation back to what cortisol actually does, what real testing looks like, and why most people don't need to treat normal life stress like a hormonal crisis. From there, we zoom out to other trendy health topics we keep seeing everywhere: gut health and the microbiome, pricey supplement stacks, and the promise that one test will finally explain your symptoms. We talk about the evidence and the limits, plus the unglamorous basics that move the needle for most people: fiber, plants, sleep, exercise, and cutting back on ultra-processed foods. We also dig into CGMs and “glucose spikes,” including what's normal (yes, exercise can raise glucose) and what actually signals risk, like blood sugar staying elevated after meals. Then we hit high-protein culture, why protein helps, why more isn't always better, and how longevity trends can distract from what matters most. Our bottom line: wellness marketing moves faster than science, so we aim for practical, evidence-based choices you can stick with.If you found this helpful, subscribe, share it with a friend who's stuck in health-trend overwhelm, and leave a review so more people can find the show.Send us a (voice ) message with this link, we would love to hear from you. Send us Fan MailA mental health label can be a lifeline, or it can quietly become a cage. We get real about what mental health trends and statistics actually mean once they hit the therapy room, especially when someone walks in convinced a diagnosis from 20 years ago still defines them today. Matt Fox joins me as we talk about why diagnoses should be based on symptom patterns, duration, and daily functioning and why they can legitimately change as new details emerge. We also pull back the curtain on the system itself: insurance billing often requires a diagnosis code tied to session codes, which can pressure clinicians to name something before the full story is clear. From there we zoom out to comorbidity, because mental health rarely arrives one symptom at a time. Anxiety and depression commonly overlap, PTSD and substance abuse often pair up, and ADHD can fuel anxiety when life feels unmanageable. Then we dig into disparities that shape who gets help and who doesn't: women seek treatment more often, men avoid it and face higher suicide rates, and stigma still blocks care. We talk income, disability, rural access, and the complicated promise of telehealth therapy and mental health apps, including what makes online sessions work and what can make them pointless. If you want a grounded, practical take on diagnosis, therapy effectiveness, and how to advocate for yourself, hit play, share it with someone who needs it, and subscribe. Send us Fan MailOne in five US adults is living with a mental illness, and the odds are high that someone in your family, workplace, or friend group is quietly carrying it. We take a hard look at mental health trends in 2026, including what the latest stats say about anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and more, plus the gut-punch reality that depression rates have surged over the last decade. We also talk about the part nobody wants to admit out loud: access. Mental health may be the leading driver of disability claims, but treatment is still out of reach for a lot of people. We unpack why only about half of those diagnosed actually receive treatment, why so few people make it to therapy in a given year, and how cost, stigma, rural provider shortages, and high-deductible insurance plans keep people stuck. Along the way, we highlight demographic patterns, including why young adults are hit so hard, why women seek help more often, and why men are less likely to ask for support even when the stakes are life and death. Finally, we get practical and hopeful. Most mental health conditions are treatable and manageable, and progress starts when you stop treating symptoms like a personal failure and start treating them like a health issue you can work on. We also share why we're cautious about diagnoses becoming identities and how changing your thinking can change your life. They started as a treatment for diabetes, but GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have quickly become the most talked-about drugs in modern medicine. With two-thirds of Australians now living with obesity, the shift from lifestyle-only messaging to pharmaceutical solutions is accelerating, but is it just a new form of diet culture, or a genuine medical breakthrough? Today, we get rare access to one of the original pioneers of the science. Professor Lotte Bjerre Knudsen, Chief Scientific Advisor at Novo Nordisk, joins us to answer your questions. Plus, Lotte addresses the headlines regarding side effects and why the FDA recently removed a major warning from the label.

This episode is brought to you by Troscriptions, Timeline, Joi and Blokes. In this conversation, Dr. Tim Spector breaks down why modern life has quietly dismantled our relationship with fermented foods and how that loss may be fueling inflammation, metabolic disease, and poor mental health. Drawing from the landmark Stanford fermented foods study, he explains how just a few daily servings of fermented foods lowered inflammatory markers by 25%, outperforming fiber alone in immune impact. He outlines the hierarchy of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics, why ultra-processed foods sabotage gut health, and how eating 30 diverse plants per week can measurably improve mood, energy, and microbiome diversity. From reversing type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease to redefining stool health as a vital sign, Spector argues that restoring gut diversity may be one of the most powerful levers for extending healthspan — potentially adding ten more healthy years of life. ----- 00:00 – The Fermented Foods Study That Changed Everything 03:22 – Health Trends in 2026: Fiber vs. The Protein Craze 06:04 – The 30 Plants Per Week Rule 09:40 – Gut Health and Mental Health Connection 16:27 – What Modern Life Destroyed About Fermentation 21:55 – The Stanford Fermented Foods Study 24:31 – 3 Fermented Foods to Start Today 27:29 – Live vs. Dead Microbes (Postbiotics Explained) 38:56 – Probiotics vs. Prebiotics vs. Postbiotics 48:41 – The Biggest Destroyer of Gut Health 52:48 – The New Gut Health Metric (Nature Study) 01:01:56 – What Your Stool Says About Your Health 01:09:29 – Can Gut Health Reverse Chronic Disease? 01:13:02 – The Simplest Gut Health Rule 01:13:36 – Adding 10 Healthy Years to Your Life ----- Episode resources: Try Troscriptions clinical-grade wellness troches and use checkout code EVERFORWARD for exclusive savings Save 39% on MitoPure longevity gummies with code EVERFORWARD at https://www.Timeline.com/everforward Get 50% off any diagnostic labs with code CHASE at https://www.JoiAndBlokes.com/chase Watch and subscribe on YouTube

What do collagen powders, weighted vests, parasite cleanses, and protein bars all have in common? (According to our favorite no-nonsense doctor, probably a lot less science than TikTok would like you to believe.) This week on Laugh Lines, we're welcoming back the wonderfully persnickety Dr. Eric Topol to help us debunk the health trends that keep popping up in our feeds (and in our shopping carts.)After our last conversation, we were flooded with listener emails, voicemails, and questions, so this time he is answering all YOUR questions! After nearly two decades in the online health space, Tina Haupert dives into the 7 biggest health trends she's personally tried and why she ultimately changed her mind about them. From cycle syncing, celery juice, and The Bean Protocol, to parasite detoxes, functional testing, and peptides, Tina breaks down what actually worked, what backfired, and what she continues to use as a woman navigating perimenopause, metabolism changes, gut health, and autoimmune challenges. This episode is perfect for women over 35 who feel confused by conflicting health advice, burned by trendy “quick fixes,” and ready for a smarter, science-backed approach to energy, fat loss, and long-term wellness. Here's what you'll learn: - Why more exercise nearly wrecked my metabolism, hormones, and gut - Cycle syncing workouts: what I still use and what I don't - The bean protocol and why soluble fiber became essential for my gut and hormones - Celery juice: what helped, what didn't, and why it's not a cure-all - The parasite protocols I went all-in on and the symptoms they created - Functional testing vs. “normal” bloodwork and why both matter - How HTMA and hormone testing validated symptoms labs missed - What peptides taught me about foundations, recovery, and resilience - The difference between using peptides and using them strategically Early enrollment is open for Fit + Fueled: https://www.carrotsncake.com/offers/UkQyuWup?coupon_code=FFWAITLIST2026 Connect with Tina Haupert: https://carrotsncake.com/ Facebook: Carrots 'N' Cake https://www.facebook.com/carrotsncake Instagram: @carrotsncake https://www.instagram.com/carrotsncake YouTube: Tina Haupert https://www.youtube.com/user/carrotsncake About Tina Haupert: Tina Haupert is the owner of Carrots ‘N' Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). From hyper-personalized health data to longevity, cortisol testing, wearables, and digital detoxes, this episode explores what's truly shaping the future of health and how to navigate it without overwhelm. In this insightful episode of The Art of Living Well Podcast®, hosts Marnie Dachis Marmet and Stephanie May Potter break down the most important health and wellness trends emerging in 2026. They discuss how technology, AI, at-home testing, and recovery tools are changing the way we care for our bodies while emphasizing why human connection, coaching, and personalization matter more than ever. Through real-life examples, client stories, and honest conversation, they unpack what's helpful, what's hype, and how to apply these trends in a sustainable, realistic way so you can feel better, live longer, and protect your mental and physical well-being. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why personalized, data-driven wellness is becoming the foundation of health in 2026 How wearables like Oura, Whoop, and Apple Watch are shaping sleep, recovery, and stress awareness The role of at-home lab testing, including cortisol testing, in understanding your body Where AI fits into wellness and why it can't replace human support and connection How accessibility to health tools is expanding and what that means for long-term care The growing focus on longevity, cellular health, and recovery, not just anti-aging Why digital detoxes and tech boundaries are becoming essential for mental health How community wellness, recovery spaces, and movement-based practices are replacing traditional social habits What women need to know about hormones, menopause, and personalized testing Why simplicity, awareness, and guidance matter more than chasing every new trend Noteworthy Quotes from the Episode: "2026 is really the year of personalized health. There isn't one solution that works for everyone." "Data can be incredibly powerful, but it still needs a human to help interpret what it means." "Wearables don't just show us numbers, they validate how our bodies already feel." "Longevity isn't about anti-aging. It's about staying strong, mobile, and energized for life." "Digital detox isn't about removing technology, it's about creating boundaries." "Wellness doesn't need to be complicated. Simplicity is often the most effective approach." Today, Heather and I talk through the health and hormone trends we see gaining momentum as we head into 2026. Some of them are things we've personally seen help women and we feel good about. Others made us stop and ask more questions before moving forward. And in a lot of cases, slowing down has felt like the wiser choice for our own health.A few moments that stood out:Concerns and boundaries around AI in health and hormone supportWhy peptides aren't inherently bad, but often used without enough context or preparationWhy hyper-focusing on one body system often misses the bigger pictureIf health advice has been coming at you from all sides lately, press play and let us help you think differently about what your next step is.NEW Private Podcast - 3 Steps to Making Hormones WellBook a FREE Hormone Strategy Call with meCONNECT WITH Dr. HEATHER RHODES:WebsiteIG: @drheatherrhodesNEED HELP FIXING YOUR HORMONES? The end-of-year mental health-related assessments are in and, y'all. You. All! These reports offer some bad news and worse news. Sorry, I ran out of sugar-coating; it's been a long year. Psychotherapy Action Network's latest survey uncovered a substantial disconnect between what PMCs, for-profit private management companies like Alma, Headway, and Rula, promise therapists and what they deliver. Shocker, I know. While demand for mental health is exploding, power and influence are shifting to insurers and investors at the expense of patients and providers. But we possess the answers. We're a community of people dedicated to healing ourselves and caring for others in a world that's always one dictator away from total collapse. Don't let fear and loneliness lead you. We can only get through this shit together. *** Join the Group Practice (R)evolution!
