In this special super-sized bonus episode of Genre Exposure, we used the spooky season this year to discuss at exhaustive length the titular franchise: Halloween. From favorite kills to the coolest incarnation of Michael Myers, we spill our guts and geek out over our history and experiences with the complete franchise. Nothing fancy, and we're not trying to reinvent the wheel or give some deep analysis you've never heard before. Just two horror nerds gushing our hearts out in a more casual chat guided only by a handful of topics we selected in advance to fuel discussion. And of course we throw down the gauntlet and take to the battlefield with our own rankings of the series as well. So from all of us at Genre Exposure, we wish you a very Happy Halloween and hope that, like us, you get the chance to spend at least part of it soaking up the Fall vibes of Haddonfield and its very special Boogeyman. But before all that, we dish on more of our October watches including some surprising first time watches plus get hyped about Rhonda Shear and Up All Night returning and, hey, does anyone else remember Michael Jackson's Ghosts? Please turn off your cellphones and join us in reliving the trauma of what happened 40 years ago tonight when shit went sideways and HE came home, and see if we can live up to the rarely heard, yet immensely catchy slogan of, evil dies tonight! For our 82nd Commentary we subtly lead an angry mob through the labyrinthine like hallways of the hospital that is 2021 for the night that evil dies, and will seemingly never end, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, and Anthony Michael Hall to relive what happened 40 years ago tonight. Evil dies tonight as we relive what happened 40 years ago tonight and ponder how many goddamn catchphrases one character can spew repeatedly, debate how realistic a kill or two is, wonder if this is a comment on the culture wars, and see if we're with it enough to remember what happened 40 years ago tonigh.
Send us a textKatie and Bridget go get their (outside) bushes trimmed as they re-watch the iconic: Edward Scissorhands! It's a story all about an emotastic man/possibly-AI-creation who teaches a small town that disabilities are not roadblocks but rather obstacles to overcome... Or according to Tim Burton, they actually will always lead to DEATH and SADNESS. THANKS TIM! Come along as we meet Edward Scissorhands - he's the guy with the scissorhands, in case you were confused. When he gets pseudo-adopted by an Avon Saleswoman named Peg, he discovers a world full of horny housewives, possibly hard of hearing dads, and a weird love interest with Peg's daughter Kim. This movie asks the deep questions, such as: Does our society ultimately highlight, exploit, and then vilify those with disabilities? What can we as a culture do to better support individuals with disabilities in the real world/in Tim Burton's world? Would these housewives have been completely different people if they all just had vibrators instead!? All this and more in this very Tim Burton-esq film. Released in 1990, it was directed by Tim Burton and stars Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Michael Hall, Alan Arkin, Kathy Baker, and Conchata Ferrell.
It begins! October is here and we're bringing you the first of our anthology series so hop on that terrrbrrrkerrrrr trrrrrrrrk! We join a feline friend on a journey to find Our Girl Drew through a system run by a sadist for love of the game, we're haunted by Anthony Michael Hall and Nicole has questions then we head to Atlantic City 27 floors up where the plants stay watered. Clenched buttholes, penthouse knowledge and that pigeon gets it too! Finally, we head back to the 'burbs to find a very unlikeable mother, grandma dracula or gramacula, Polly's pecker and a troll we would totally adopt and force to live in our dollhouse - it's Cat's Eye, this time on Doom Generation.
In this episode of "Normal World," Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela kick things off with unusual headlines, from a nun in Ohio celebrating her 105th birthday on the golf course to a Texas man rescuing a newborn abandoned in a dumpster. The crew then reacts to a bizarre Homeland Security video that feels more like a Saturday morning cartoon than a government warning, before joking their way through fashion trends, forgotten shows, and the curious careers of Billy Zane, Bruce Campbell, and Alec Baldwin. The conversation shifts to Sean Penn's history of fights, Jude Law's awkward defense at the Oscars, and the infamous Will Smith slap. From there, they reminisce about '90s sitcoms, the odd rise and fall of TV formats, and the cultural status of pinky rings, Gucci loafers, and Louis Vuitton luggage. International politics enter the mix with Britain's recognition of Palestine and the spectacle of protest culture, which the hosts approach with sharp skepticism. Later, they highlight Corey Feldman's run on Dancing with the Stars, his Michael Jackson-inspired choreography, and his enduring pop culture mystique. The panel then examines Donald Trump and RFK Jr.'s warnings about Tylenol, questions surrounding autism, and the unintended consequences of health debates. The show closes with Gary Busey's probation for misconduct at a convention, his unpredictable career from Buddy Holly to Pet Judge, and a final detour into the surprising evolution of Anthony Michael Hall. What'sa happenin' hot stuff? Bob, Brad, Carla and Mark are back to discuss one of our favorite movies, John Hughes' first feature film, Sixteen Candles. This movie did not have an official soundtrack, but the songs featured in it are a killer combination of new wave, post punk and rock 'n' roll. Here are four songs we felt would have made the soundtrack cut. Find the Playlist on Spotify + Apple Music. Mama mia, 300 episodes! Insane to have been doing this for 11 years and 300+ episodes. Thank you all for listening! We had to do a BIG one for this, and what better re-visit than John Hughes' coming-of-age classic? This is a movie with some *electric* performances, but oof-a-doof some rough moments. Thank you for your support and bearing with our offseason. This podcast episode features a conversation with actress and director Blanche Baker, who discusses her career, her notable roles, and her passion for making films that address social issues.Show Notes:Early Career and the Impact of HolocaustBlanche Baker's debut role was in the Emmy-winning miniseries Holocaust. This role was deeply personal for her because her father, Jack Garfine, was a Holocaust survivor. Before filming, she retraced her father's journey through the concentration camps, including visiting Bergen-belsen, where he was liberated at age 14.She also shares a story about a taxi driver in Vienna making a joke about the Auschwitz ovens, which made her experience "horrifying at times".Her father supported her doing the film, believing people would relate to the story better than "just facts and numbers".She also recounts how her father would laugh at most films about the Holocaust, saying that in the camps people were singing and dancing, and those who felt sorry for themselves were the ones who died. This was his way of saying you have to "find the joy in life despite the horrors" to survive.Acting Technique and EducationBaker believes that an academic background gives actors roots in a tough business with many ups and downs. She recommends the books Respect for Acting by Uta Hagen and Intent to Live by Larry Moss for her students. She has also taken Stanislavsky's work and translated it for film to help students achieve the naturalistic performances seen on screen today. She notes that the basic acting technique is the same across mediums like film, television, and theater, but it must be modified for each, with film bringing the "audience... right up into your face".Sixteen Candles and On-Set StoriesBaker recalls that John Hughes wrote Sixteen Candles in just two weeks and let the cast improvise.None of them expected the film to become a cult classic that still resonates with young people today. She recounts a story about Anthony Michael Hall hanging from a coat hook in her hotel room and other pranks on set, describing the experience as "like being at camp".She also shares a story about trashing a hotel room while shooting a film in Israel when she was younger and how it taught her that pursuing acting as an art is what makes you happy, not acting out.Moving Behind the CameraBlanche Baker is passionate about making films that make people think about social issues. Her short films, like Street Right, deal with freedom of speech by contrasting negative advertising with positive graffiti. Her other short film, Make America Safe, uses humor and a "backwards" world to highlight the issue of gun violence and school shooter drills. She mentions that she believes there need to be stricter gun laws. She is currently working on a film called Girl in a Glass Box, which explores psychological manipulation and shines a light on gaslighting and abuseLINKS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Respect_for_Actinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konstantin_Stanislavskihttps://www.nyfa.eduUse Promo Code "FILMMAKINGSWABY" for all my deals or just click the link:25% Off More Labshttps://www.morelabs.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY20% Off Strong Coffee Companyhttps://strongcoffeecompany.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY15% Off Tusslehttps://www.tusslegear.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY20% Off Eric Javitshttps://ericjavits.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY25% Off Quantum Energy Squarehttps://quantumsquares.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY20% Off Long Tablehttps://longtablepancakes.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY20% Off HyperNaturalhttps://hypernaturalstyle.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY20% Off wearplaygroundhttps://wearplayground.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY15% Off STAND+https://www.standshoes.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY10% Off Molly Bzhttps://mollybz.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY41% Off Cozy Earthhttps://cozyearth.com/discount/FILMMAKINGSWABY

Enjoy Teen Movies! 1985 was a banner year for teen comedies, giving us characters we loved, related to, and sometimes cringed at. These movies didn't just entertain, they helped define Generation X adolescence. Why did these films resonate so much? Because the '80s were overflowing with disposable teen cash, hungry studios, and an army of rising stars like Michael J. Fox, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, John Cusack, and more. They gave us escapism, identity, and some truly quotable lines. Did one of these movies speak to you? Did you own the soundtrack? I grew up on Route 66 and have road trips in my veins. I've driven all over this great country, visited every single state and seen thousands of interesting things. Nothing inspires me more than a good road trip film — if you're the same way, check out one of this week's recommendations. All of the my picks on this week's list are pretty well known, which makes them so much fun to revisit. If you haven't seen one or all of them in a few years, what better time to revisit them?Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)There's nothing Pee-wee Herman loves more than his bicycle. Unfortunately for him, spoiled frenemie Francis Buxton loves it to, and hires someone to steal it for him. A distraught Pee-wee organizes a search party to find his bicycle and eventually hits the road and crosses multiple states in search of his irreplicable bike. Join Pee-wee and all the friends he meets along the way as he goes on his adventure. The Muppet Movie (1979)Life's like a movie, write your own ending! In the first full-length Muppet film, Kermit is convinced by a lost agent to head to Hollywood to fulfill his dream of making millions of people happy. Along his journey, Kermit meets a joke-telling bear named Fozzie, a weirdo named Gonzo, a rock band called the Electric Mayhem (led by Dr. Teeth), and the world's most beautiful women, Miss Piggy. Will Kermit and his friends reach Hollywood before Doc Hopper catches Kermit and forces him to become the mascot for his restaurant? I hope so, because there are a lot more Muppet movies after this one! The NeverEnding Story (1984)While hiding from school bullies, young Bastion acquires a book promising a never ending story and skips school, hiding in the attic to read it. The book tells the story of Atreyu and his quest to save Fantasia from a darkness known as The Nothing. The more Bastian reads, the more it seems his own life is becoming entertwined with the book itself! Featuring a hit theme song and a luck dragon, The NeverEnding Story is a journey not to be missed. National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)If you've ever gone on a road trip, either as a child or a parent, you'll relate to the Griswolds as they drive across the country in their new station wagon from Chicago to Wallyworld! Directed by Harold Ramis and starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, and Dana Barron, and Randy Quaid, and featuring cameos from comedians including Eugene Levy and John Candy, among others. As a kid I identified as oldest sibling Rusty, and as a parent I can't help but see a little bit of Clark in the rearview mirror.Spring is here and there's no better time to roll down your windows, put the pedal to the metal, and hit the open road. If you can't fit a road trip into your current schedule, watching one of these movies about journeys is the next best thing! This is a public episode. What if Anthony Michael Hall wasn't the face of 1980s teen angst? What if instead of starring in The Breakfast Club, he was flipping omelets at a diner or selling insurance in suburban Chicago? This week on Celebrity Jobber with Jeff Zito, we dive into the alternate reality of one of the most recognizable faces from John Hughes’ iconic coming-of-age films. Anthony Michael Hall — the original “geek” who made awkward cool — joins Jeff to talk about what could have been if Hollywood hadn’t come calling. Hall shot to fame with a string of unforgettable roles in Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club, becoming the go-to actor for every lovable outsider in 80s cinema. But he wasn’t just a teen dream. He broke molds again by becoming the youngest cast member ever on Saturday Night Live at just 17 years old — a bold move that showed his comedic range and fearless ambition. Over the years, Hall has shed the high school persona and proven his versatility in serious roles — from the gritty The Dead Zone to portraying Whitey Ford in 61 and even embodying a cold-hearted villain in The Dark Knight. But despite the evolution, one question remains: What job would Anthony Michael Hall be doing today if he never got that lucky break? Many stars have walked a thin line between fame and flipping burgers. Remember Kanye West’s stint at The Gap? Or Brad Pitt sweating it out in a chicken suit for El Pollo Loco? Hall might’ve ended up a music producer, a writer, or even a motivational speaker — but one thing’s for sure: he never saw himself as just a jobber.
Following up on the instantly classic Anthony Michael Hall interview, Chaz and AJ asked Scot Haney about the celebrity interviews he's done that completely went off the rails. (0:00) Chaz and AJ asked the Tribe to call in with the craziest stories of things they've seen people doing while driving. From potato sacks, to machete-wielding women in nightgowns, and the "ketchup packet" incident. (17:33) Boss Keith's Top 5 list today included all the things he's most envious of, from 85-inch TVs, to laundry on the second floor. (34:49)

“So, what do you little maniacs want to do first?” As embodied by Kelly LeBrock, Lisa was full of questions, answers, and (for unknown reasons) a variety of witchy powers in the 1985 classic, Weird Science. Written and directed by John Hughes, the movie was a perverted teenage geek's dream: building a woman to spec, controlling her, and using her to gain popularity among the cool kids. But now, nearly 40 years later, what in the name of Gloria Steinem is going on here? Is there any joy to be had in this Anthony Michael Hall of horrors?
