Winston Peters had no option when it came to sacking Phil Goff from his job as High Commissioner in London, but that doesn't mean I'm happy with it. I think he's done the right thing. But he's done the wrong thing, as well. Because it just shows how scaredy-cat the world is of Donald Trump. But we better get used to it – this is how it's going to be for the next four years. That's why I accept that it needed to be done, but it's still pretty cruddy that we are running scared of him like this. What Goff did was he let the political nerd in him come out when he was at an event at Chatham House, in London, earlier this week. And it looked like it was some sort of Q&A session involving Finland's Foreign Affairs Minister. The significance of Finland, of course, is that it shares a border with Russia. So Phil Goff had the roving microphone, and he asked Elina Valtonen whether she thought Donald Trump understood the history of the second world war. That's because people are likening what Trump is doing with Ukraine to what happened in 1938, when Nazi Germany was allowed to get its hands on land in Czechoslovakia in a bid to avoid war. It was a deal signed in 1938, but, as we know, a year later Germany still went to war. Phil Goff isn't the first person to say it. And on the face of it, it doesn't seem that outrageous, but in diplomatic circles, it was probably enough to have them spilling their G&Ts. And it was certainly enough for Foreign Minister Winston Peters to tell his people in London to give Phil Goff the flick. Winston Peters says the reason he did it was because Goff's comments “do not represent the views of the New Zealand government and make his position as High Commissioner to London untenable.” And former High Commissioner Sir Lockwood Smith agrees. He's in no doubt that Winston Peters has done the right thing to minimise any damage. Phil Goff was due to finish his posting later this year, but that could have been extended, of course. But he's over there right now and all the diplomatic crew will be chattering. So it will be very embarrassing for Goff. Not the way he would've wanted to go out. Especially, given that as far as I'm aware, it's the first time New Zealand has sacked a High Commissioner. Yes, he was being a bit of a smart-alec, something you're not supposed to be when you move around in diplomatic circles. Which is a tension that Sir Lockwood talked about when he was on Newstalk ZB this morning. He was saying that when you've been a politician, it can sometimes be difficult to take your political hat off. But he reckons that his time as speaker before being a High Commissioner helped prepare him for that. Maybe that's why we're not hearing about former speaker Trevor Mallard putting his foot in it over in Ireland, where he's High Commissioner. But perhaps Phil Goff can take some comfort from Dr Stephen Winter, who is an international relations expert at Auckland University. He's says if things weren't so on edge around the world, Goff might have got away with it. He says: "Goff can take comfort from the fact that he is right, even though he was not diplomatic.” But things are on edge, and Goff is off. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The government says it's still figuring out how much money it should give to people who were abused while in the state's care. University of Auckland associate professor of politics Stephen Winter spoke to Alexa Cook.
The Government will issue its apology to survivors of abuse in state care and faith based institutions tomorrow. The apology has been a long time coming and is set to be a monumental day for survivors. The apology is taking place in Parliament, and with spaces being limited, a huge number of survivors won't be able to watch it in person, instead entering a lottery to gain a space in Parliament. The remaining survivors will be watching via livestream in multiple locations. Beyond the apology the government is also yet to layout what its redress and compensation plans will include despite recommendations being made in the royal commission of inquiry into abuse in state care report. Producer Evie spoke to the University of Auckland's Stephen Winter about the apology and what to expect from the government next.

Last week the government released the findings of the inquiry into abuse in care that was established in 2018. This inquiry was established to investigate abuse in faith and state-based care from 1950 to 1999. Māori, Pacific, and Disabled rangatahi were all overrepresented in this report. Now people are asking what to expect next when there is evidence abuse in state care remains ongoing, and while the government has promised an official apology and redress scheme. Wire Host Caeden spoke to the University of Auckland's Stephen Winter about the report, how it compares to international standards, and what we can expect to come next as a result of the report.

In his 1996 film “Chocolate Babies,” Stephen Winter drew on his life as a young Black gay man in New York City to tell the untold story of the AIDS crisis: the fact that it disproportionately affected racialized people. With the film's new 4K restoration and inclusion into the Criterion Channel, Stephen joins Tom to talk about the legacy of “Chocolate Babies.”
Jason Yamas is a queer fiction and nonfiction writer making his prose debut as author of Tweakerworld: A Memoir (Unnamed Press, 2023). Meet Jason: a college educated documentary film producer, cat parent of two, and was one of San Francisco's top drug dealers. After Jason's world fell apart in LA, he moved to Berkeley for a fresh start with his kid brother. Just one problem: his long-closeted Adderall addiction had exploded into an out-of-control crystal meth binge. Within weeks, Jason plunged into the sprawling ParTy n' 'Play subculture of the Bay Area's gay community. It is a wildly decadent scene of drugs, group sex, and criminals, and yet it is also filled with surprising characters, people who continually subverted Jason's own presumptions of the stereotypical tweaker (slang) A person addicted to methamphetamine. Soon Jason became a dealer on the pretense of researching this tweaker world for a project that would carry him, like a life raft, back to the shores of a normal life. But his friendly entrepreneurial spirit and trusting disposition disarmed clients and rival dealers alike. The money began to roll in as demand increased to frightening levels. Suddenly, Jason was in control of the entire crystal meth market for San Francisco's gay community, even as he was nodding off behind the wheel of his car, or walking down the sidewalk. As friends and family worked frantically to steer him towards recovery, Jason resisted, chasing something else: a sleepless nirvana fueled by sex, drugs, and the Tweakerworld. With painful honesty, Jason Yamas has crafted a landmark narrative that is not just a personal account of addiction, but a portrait of a vulnerable, largely undocumented community of people who, for many reasons, have been marginalized to the point of invisibility. Prior to his foray into literature, he produced documentary and narrative films such as Jonathan Caouette's Walk Away Renee (SundanceNow) and Stephen Winter's Jason & Shirley (Criterion). He produced charity arts and music projects in Detroit with the late great songwriter Allee Willis ("September", The Friends Theme, The Color Purple.) His self-directed and produced feature Not Me, Murphy premiered at the MIX NYC Film Festival. He's currently writing his first novel and pursuing acting training at the Sanford Meisner Center. He holds a BFA from NYU, Tisch School of the Arts in Drama and has performed in and directed in the experimental downtown New York theatre scene. With the publication of Tweakerworld, he intends to shine a bright light on the worsening epidemic of crystal meth in the LGBTQ+ community. The Government has started offering rapid payments to historical abuse-in-care claimants. The payments are for those who are seriously ill, who are aged over 70 or who have waited the longest to get their claims considered. Survivors who don't meet the fast track criteria will have to wait until the government's new redress programme is up and running. However, it is not yet clear when that will be. Auckland University expert in redress and reparation Stephen Winter spoke to Corin Dann.

When Stephen started going out to gay bars, he was immediately made to feel like a Black visitor in a predominantly white gay world. When Femi was socializing in queer spaces during and after college, she was struck by how it was segregated by race in the south and by gender in the north. In this episode, Phil and Alex listen to Stephen and Femi's story and discuss the race, racism and gender in the LGBTQ social scene, the need for safe spaces, and what it truly means to be an ally to the Black community.
This emergency episode was made quickly during a time of uprising following the killing of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and countless other African Americans by police. We begin by hearing “Credo,” a prose poem first written by W.E.B. DuBois in 1904. The version we will hear was conceived and produced by Dr. John Michael Cooper. It is a compilation of 36 voices reading from DuBois' proclamation on his philosophy of racial equality. This is a digital method to embody and share the truth that Black Lives Matter now, that Black voices speak truth to power with their poetry and music, and that all Americans can be moved and changed through a justice-focused interlocking of art, education, activism, and pride. Dr. Cooper mixes diverse and impassioned voices recorded for this project over the summer of 2020.He intercuts music written for the Credo by African-American composer Margaret Bonds, allowing us to hear for ourselves the hardtruth #36: African American History is real.History feeds us in today’s struggles. This episode’s shared voicing of a call for justice also aligns with the project’s hardtruth, #98, that “peace can be the most powerful deterrent of all.”DuBois writes: “I believe that armies and navies are at bottom the tinsel and braggadocia of oppression and wrong; and I believe that the wicked conquest of weaker and darker nations by nations whiter and stronger but foreshadows the death of that strength.”Agree?
