Vanessa Van Edwards visits Google to discuss her book “Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People.” Do you feel awkward at networking events? Do you wonder what your date really thinks of you? Do you wish you could just decode people? To do this and more, you need to learn the science of people. As a human behavior hacker, Vanessa Van Edwards created a research lab to study the hidden forces that drive us. In her book “Captivate”, she shares shortcuts, systems, and secrets for taking charge of your interactions at work, at home, and in any social situation. These aren't the people skills you learned in school. This is the first comprehensive, science-backed, real life manual on how to build connections. Just like knowing the formulas to use in a chemistry lab, or the right programming language to build an app, “Captivate” provides simple ways to solve people problems. You'll learn how to work a room, how to read faces, and how to talk to just about anyone. When you understand the laws of human behavior, your influence, impact, and income will increase significantly. What's more, you will improve your interpersonal intelligence, make killer first impressions, and build rapport quickly and authentically in any situation—negotiations, interviews, parties, and pitches. You'll never interact the same way again. Originally published in June of 2017. Visit http://g.co/TalksAtGoogle/Captivate to watch the video.

Dr. Richard Low is a huge fan of Vanessa Van Edwards’ work on the science of unlocking human behavior and we are delighted to have her on the show. In this episode Vanessa shares specific strategies from her experiences teaching dentists how to build trust and help patients feel comfortable within the first moments of your interaction. Another secret we uncovered is that you might accidentally be making people feel judged and distant by the way you smile and the best way to get sincere expressions for your profile pictures, websites and more. Bio: Vanessa Van Edwards is Lead Investigator at Science of People — where she unlocks the formulas and patterns behind human behavior for hundreds of thousands of students in over 200 countries. She is the national bestselling author of Captivate: The Science of Succeeding With People, available in 14 languages around the world. Her work has been featured on CNN, NPR, BBC, and Fast Company and dozens more. Biggest Takeaways: Why micro expressions are so important and how you respond to them is valuable. Why you need to be authentic in your emotions. Importance of hand gestures. How physical touch builds trust. The first 20 seconds of meeting someone is the most important. Why you need to get on the same level as your patient during first impressions. How to slowly move into someones personal space. Show Questions: What is your face saying to your patients? Are you paying close enough attention to your patients to spot the micro expressions? Do you have the courage to acknowledge the expressions? Are you giving the right signals during that first 20 seconds? You know, it's a very interesting chemical, but one of the things that it does is it builds trust. So the moment someone shakes hands with us, we get this burst of this chemical that makes us feel belonging, which is so powerful." - Vanessa Van Edwards "However, especially if you are in the first 20 seconds to a minute of interaction, that is the single most important time to have your hands visible." - Vanessa Van Edwards
Are you a recovering awkward person? My next guest states she is—although you'd never know it given her amazing insights and understanding of what she has branded, The Science of People. As we know from being a child and certainly a preteen or teenager, we all feel awkward from time to time. Maybe some of us more than others. My own palms get sweaty just thinking about walking into school on the first day of school, after a fight with a friend- or worse, a break up. Blargh. And what about when walking into a party or school event when you aren't sure who will be there—or when you do and the people who are there aren't exactly the people you jive with. Do people even say “jive” anymore? Anyway, what if we could tap into the science of people so that we can give the kids and teens in our lives some hacks that allow them to be successful in social situations? And what if some of these hacks could help us connect better and have better conversations with our kids? That would be pretty great, wouldn't it? Vanessa Van Edwards is lead investigator at the Science of People—a human behavior research lab. She is the national bestselling author of Captivate: The Science of Succeeding With People which was chosen as one of Apple's Most Anticipated Books of the year. Her work has been featured on CNN, NPR and Fast Company. She writes a monthly column on the science of success for Entrepreneur Magazine and the Huffington Post. She even has a successful Ted Talk which is awesome. She speaks worldwide and I couldn't be more thrilled to have her stop by our show today. Vanessa Van Edwards is a behavioral investigator, a published best selling author, and the brains behind the innovative human research lab The Science of People. The Penguin author and tea lover is also a monthly columnist for the Huffington Post and Entrepreneur Magazine. Aside from designing breakthrough research experiments to help decipher the code of human behavior, she also conducts revolutionary courses and workshops that teach people how to succeed both in business and in life by understanding people’s hidden dynamics. Her latest bestselling book Captivate has been dubbed by Apple as one of the most anticipated books of the year. She also looks forward to writing and illustrating her very own children’s book in the near future. This week’s episode talks about the art of building rapport, why the element of surprise is so underrated, and how a little word switch can make a world of difference. Vanessa also shares how you can be perceived as warm by other people, how you can encourage people to show off their best selves, and the difference between a pet project and a pest project. For those who want to forge better relationships with others, Vanessa offers the following advice, “Everyone has their own unique brand of charisma and not everyone has to be a bubbly extrovert to be liked.”
“We like winners. We like to be around winners. We like to work with winners. We like to be friends with winners. That is because we know unconsciously that could activate our feedback loop to win. University of British Columbia did a research study on athletes. They studied athletes around the world. They also studied athletes who'd been blind since birth. They found that across races and genders athletes have the exact same body language when they win or lose a race. Pride body language very specifically is when people take up as much space as possible. They tilt their head up towards the sky. They open their arms wide. They'll jump up into the air or firmly plant their feet. It's as if they're saying “I feel good in the world so I want to take up more space in it.” Whereas defeated athletes, this is the body language of losing and shame, is when they take up as little space as possible. They roll their shoulders in. They tilt their heads towards their chest. They usually will grip their hands in a fist or clenched fashion. They even will stand or sit in fetal position. This is the universal gesture of shame. In today's episodes we talk about first impressions. More specifically we talk about how to present yourself to potential clients during your first interactions together. We touch on our personal tips from our consults, body language, micro expressions, and finding common ground - that imitates small talk. Our goal of our first in-person meeting is to letting the client know we are easy to communicate with. And to ensure them that we will be a stress free element of their wedding day and just be a solution to theirwedding photography needs, not an added problem.Every client has a specific problem they are looking to solve; ours at it's simplest form, is couples looking for a wedding photographer. I like to put myself in the couples head and figure out what their emotional attachment they have to "their problem."By knowing the emotional aspects of what the problem is can help me define and showcase my services better. I put myself in their shoes and thought about what would keep them up at night (about their search for their photographer.)Clients just want you to be able to solve their problems. The most important thing that can happen at your first meeting is that your client walks away feeling like you’ve totally got this and that they’ve made the right decision in choosing your services. We reference; a book called Captivate: The Science of Succeeding With People by Vanessa Van Edwards. And an article on FashionMag.com.I hope you enjoy Episode 13 of House Fur Happy Hour Podcast, it might be one of my favorites so far!

Some leaders have a high level of natural, God-given, intuitive, emotional intelligence. They know how they feel and they understand how others feel. They can build connections based on those feelings, and everyone is the better for it. I (Matt) did not receive that particular gift under the leadership Christmas tree. I went to school for more than 20 years, and nobody told me that emotional intelligence was more important than 10th-grade geometry. Talking about feelings wasn’t something that happened in my house growing up. I’m not angry about it. I don’t blame anyone. But I have to admit that paying attention and prioritizing emotions was not on my radar for a long time as a leader. And the odds are that they may not be that big of a priority for you either. And our failure to prioritize emotions - ours and those we lead - and a lack of development if emotional intelligence does not come naturally is costly. I would estimate that 80% of the interpersonal conflict that I have encountered as a leader is because someone was hurt because they didn’t feel heard or understood. Think about that. Most of the problems that exist in our relationships come down to feelings, not facts. We can talk about ‘speaking truth in love’ ‘til the cows come home, but without emotional intelligence, people won’t believe we love them. If you struggle to name your feelings or create problems for yourself as a leader by not prioritizing the feelings of others, this podcast episode will help you. Tal’s gonna share wisdom about emotional intelligence, depression, and the connection that exists between our mood, mindset, and momentum as a leader. Life is hard. Leadership is painful. Without resilience, you’ll quit or hide when the chips are down. Listen to this episode, take action and make the change you need to be the best version of you as a leader. In this episode you’ll discover: [Bonus] The exact medicine you need to take to kick a cold. The myth that 1,700 pastors quit each month...and why the truth might reveal a bigger problem. The truth about depression from a licensed therapist. The common grace of medication for depression and other mental disorders. The limitations of ‘biblical counseling.' The relationship between your mood, mindset, and motivation.
