Vanessa Van Edwards visits Google to discuss her book “Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People.” Do you feel awkward at networking events? Do you wonder what your date really thinks of you? Do you wish you could just decode people? To do this and more, you need to learn the science of people. As a human behavior hacker, Vanessa Van Edwards created a research lab to study the hidden forces that drive us. In her book “Captivate”, she shares shortcuts, systems, and secrets for taking charge of your interactions at work, at home, and in any social situation. These aren't the people skills you learned in school. This is the first comprehensive, science-backed, real life manual on how to build connections. Just like knowing the formulas to use in a chemistry lab, or the right programming language to build an app, “Captivate” provides simple ways to solve people problems. You'll learn how to work a room, how to read faces, and how to talk to just about anyone. When you understand the laws of human behavior, your influence, impact, and income will increase significantly. What's more, you will improve your interpersonal intelligence, make killer first impressions, and build rapport quickly and authentically in any situation—negotiations, interviews, parties, and pitches. You'll never interact the same way again. Originally published in June of 2017. Visit http://g.co/TalksAtGoogle/Captivate to watch the video.

Notes: Cues - It's about warmth and competence. Can I trust you? Can I rely on you? – How are you showing others warmth and competence? Dr. Kofi Essel - His non-verbal protocol for warmth: Fronting - He angles his toes, torso, and head towards the person. Be in alignment with the patient. Non-Verbal bridges - Slowly warm someone up. Lean in. In your 1 on 1 meetings, remove all barriers between you and the person. Show them 100% focus. If you see someone gazing over your head, look where they're looking. It will help make them aware of what they're doing. Question Inflection - From the Ring founder when he pitched on Shark Tank. This is something that a lot of us mess up. When stating a fact, SAY IT, don't ask it. The 4 modes of communication: Nonverbal Verbal - Syntax Vocal Imagery Touch – A group of researchers at UC Berkeley watched the first 3 games of the NBA finals in the 2008-2009 season and counted every single time players were seen touching on camera. They found the team that touched the most, won the most games.    Touches = higher trust Speed dating research – Followed 144-speed dates and found that postural expansiveness was the most romantically appealing trait. Participants who took up more space were 76% more likely to be chosen for future dates. Want to show someone they matter? That you're listening? Turning toward is tuning in. Zoom Calls – How do we best approach them? - Look into the camera so the other person feels you are looking them in the eye. Disney teaches all of their employees (from janitors to princesses) specific nonverbal cues to use with guests. And they all embody the pinnacle of warmth… “Being a highlighter is about constantly searching for the good in people. When you tell people they are good, they become better. When you search for what's good, you feel great.” “When you try to be the same as everyone else, it's boring. When you try to fit into a mold, you become forgettable. When you try to be “normal,” you become dull. Just be yourself, because no one is like you. If you're a little weird, own it. The right people will like you for it.” “Vulnerability is sexy—it shows we are relatable, honest, and real. That is attractive. And the science proves it: “A blunder tends to humanize him and, consequently, increases his attractiveness.” “Humans are purpose-driven creatures. We want to believe there are reasons behind everything we do. Before leaders can inspire action, they have to get emotional buy-in. When we explain the motivations behind a goal, it allows listeners to feel partial ownership of that goal.”

We will learn: Insights on how people work.  Surprising effects of eye contact and when is too much.  The two traits that make up charisma and simple tweaks in behavior to lean into them.  Have you ever watched someone and thought,  “Wow, that person has charisma?” How does that person seem so confident, so effortless, so connected, when I just seem so awkward? In every stage of my life, I've met people that seem to have that ability to just own the room. People trust them. People like them. People want to do business with them or be friends with them. It's not just confidence, it's charisma. But what even is charisma? Is it a cool connectedness? Is it social grace? Is it persuasion? And how can we be more charismatic if we're not even sure how to define it? Well, turns out, there's a lot we can do. There are cues we can pick up on and put out to be that charismatic person that seems to attract people and opportunities. That's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Vanessa Van Edwards. Did you know that we can predict a leader's charisma based solely on five seconds of exposure? That nonverbal signals account for 65 to 90 percent of our total communication? Today we're talking about cues, specifically the formula for charisma (hint: a combination of cues that project warmth and competence). As a self-described “recovering awkward person,” Vanessa's secret sauce is combining the latest research, real-life case studies of success, and fascinating examples of notable figures (like Oprah and Britney Spears) with practical strategies you can start using immediately. More About Guest Vanessa: Vanessa Van Edwards is a speaker, researcher, and national bestselling author. More than 50 million people have seen her engaging YouTube tutorials and in her viral TED Talk, You Are Contagious. Vanessa is Lead Investigator at Science of People. She is the bestselling author of Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People, translated into 16 languages. Today we're talking about her new book, Cues: Master the Secret Language of Charismatic Communication.  Key Takeaways: Your all-important first impression starts at the very first moment of an experience with someone: when you walk into the room, or when the camera flips on, and not with the first word you speak. We all have patterns for when we feel awkward and out of place, which are not the ingredients for charismatic communication. But we also have patterns for when we are at our most confident and natural. Tracking those and taking advantage of them to give yourself more comfort and ease in your communications can immediately increase your charisma. It's extremely hard to lie with your voice, so spending time (and creating the best environment) for your body is going to make your competence and warmth much more evident in the subtle cues of your voice.  ⭐️ Permission: Skip the happy hour! Drop the scheduled phone calls! Think about the times and places where you feel the happiest and most confident, and engage with people then, instead of sticking to the ‘normal' times and places you feel you should. ⭐️ Do (or Delegate) This Next: Practice “I see you” acknowledgments when you first start talking to people in person or over video. A wave, a nod, or a smile all show the people you are talking to that they belong.

Are you a recovering awkward person? My next guest states she is—although you'd never know it given her amazing insights and understanding of what she has branded, The Science of People. As we know from being a child and certainly a preteen or teenager, we all feel awkward from time to time. Maybe some of us more than others. My own palms get sweaty just thinking about walking into school on the first day of school, after a fight with a friend- or worse, a break up. Blargh. And what about when walking into a party or school event when you aren't sure who will be there—or when you do and the people who are there aren't exactly the people you jive with. Do people even say “jive” anymore? Anyway, what if we could tap into the science of people so that we can give the kids and teens in our lives some hacks that allow them to be successful in social situations? And what if some of these hacks could help us connect better and have better conversations with our kids? That would be pretty great, wouldn't it? Vanessa Van Edwards is lead investigator at the Science of People—a human behavior research lab. She is the national bestselling author of Captivate: The Science of Succeeding With People which was chosen as one of Apple's Most Anticipated Books of the year. Her work has been featured on CNN, NPR and Fast Company. She writes a monthly column on the science of success for Entrepreneur Magazine and the Huffington Post. She even has a successful Ted Talk which is awesome. She speaks worldwide and I couldn't be more thrilled to have her stop by our show today. “We like winners. We like to be around winners. We like to work with winners. We like to be friends with winners. That is because we know unconsciously that could activate our feedback loop to win. University of British Columbia did a research study on athletes. They studied athletes around the world. They also studied athletes who'd been blind since birth. They found that across races and genders athletes have the exact same body language when they win or lose a race. Pride body language very specifically is when people take up as much space as possible. They tilt their head up towards the sky. They open their arms wide. They'll jump up into the air or firmly plant their feet. It's as if they're saying “I feel good in the world so I want to take up more space in it.” Whereas defeated athletes, this is the body language of losing and shame, is when they take up as little space as possible. They roll their shoulders in. They tilt their heads towards their chest. They usually will grip their hands in a fist or clenched fashion. They even will stand or sit in fetal position. This is the universal gesture of shame. What happens is when we first see someone, in that first few seconds, we're very quickly trying to decided “who do you look more like a winner or a loser?” We can pick up how prideful someone feels based on how much space they're taking up and how much movement they have”- Vanessa Van EdwardsVanessa Van Edwards is a published author and behavioral investigator.
