Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette joined the show. Jason thinks Paul Skenes will be here in May. He could still win Rookie of the Year and the service time talk goes out the window. He doesn't think it's going to be a Super Two thing. The Pirates are conserving innings now so they don't have to shut him down late. The Pirates traded for San Francisco catcher Joey Bart for a minor league pitcher. He's a former No. 2 overall pick that will backup Henry Davis and likely means Yasmani Grandal will be out even longer.

He's a former No. 2 overall pick that will backup Henry Davis and likely means Yasmani Grandal will be out even longer. Steelers insider Mark Kaboly of The Athletic joined the show. Mark thinks if a Tyler Boyd deal was going to happen with the Steelers, it would have happened by now. He thinks the Stefon Diggs trade to Houston is a salary dump for Buffalo. Center remains a big question. Mark heard the Steelers would rather get a center in the second or third round.

Hour 4 with Dorin Dickerson and Adam Crowley: What to do with Paul Skenes. The ideal option is to call him up in June after Super-Two and have him for another year of service, but bring him to Pittsburgh right after. What if the NFL had a minor league system like baseball? It could help players develop. Having the USFL and XFL, merging to the UFL, become the minor league system makes sense. Broderick Jones is eventually going to left tackle... but when? Kevin Dotson did well for the Rams after leaving Pittsburgh. Calls on the Steelers and Pirates, including a moon conspiracy. Legendary Pirates broadcaster Lanny Frattare was in the building and joined the show.

Hour 2 with Joe Starkey: 93.7 The Fan Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. We hear a Louis Riddick clip that he would prefer Justin Fields on the Steelers than starting his fellow Pitt man Kenny Pickett. Jeff would trade for Fields, but thinks they're going to stick with Pickett and see what he has in his arsenal. The Penguins were embarrassed last night against Florida. Jeff would sign Jake Guentzel and trade him to Washington for Tom Wilson. They need to try something different. We praised the Karlsson move, but this team has no grit. The physical nature is not there. Pittsburgh Baseball Now Pirates reporter John Perrotto joined the show. John thinks Henry Davis could start in AAA and learn how to play his position better. Davis was the No. 1 overall pick and it's depressing if he starts there, especially if he hits well in spring. Derek Shelton 'strongly implied" Yasmani Grandal will be the starting catcher. The Pirates track record of first-round draft picks is not, not good. If Skenes has a lights-out spring and they don't bring him to Pittsburgh, the Pirates are kidding themselves about what they say regarding Super Two. Free association! Opening Day starter will probably be Mitch Keller.

The San Francisco Giants' Joc Pederson and Thairo Estrada are Silver Slugger finalists. Pederson had a monster year in a somewhat limited role, given that nearly 90% of his plate appearances came against right-handed pitching. Estrada is a finalist at the utility position, which is a new one for the Silver Slugger Award. Which of these SF Giants players might win, and why?Offensively, Pederson did exactly what the Giants wanted him to do this season. He crushed right-handed pitching. He actually held his own against left-handed pitching as well, but he faced them so little that it doesn't necessarily indicate real improvement. Pederson struggled defensively, and whether he returns to the San Francisco Giants seems to have a lot to do with what his market is. Will he seek a Kyle Schwarber-type deal (4/$79M)? He has a right to want that kind of deal, as Schwarber is a similar player, but whether it's out there remains to be seen. The SF Giants almost certainly give that kind of money to him, since he is a defensively challenged platoon player.Estrada is not a free agent—far from it. The SF Giants still have four years of team control over Estrada, but happily, Estrada is a Super Two this offseason, meaning he will reach arbitration a year early. This means that he will earn far more than the league minimum salary in 2023. MLB Trade Rumors estimates a $2.4 million salary for Thairo Estrada next year. The Giants should be happy to pay it, as Estrada had a breakout campaign and was overall the Giants' best position player. While not a star in any category, Estrada was simply above-average across the board, leading to an above-average 2.7 FanGraphs WAR in 2022. The Giants were right to let Donovan Solano walk in free agency, opening up second base for Estrada.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

That's how we define a successful boyfriend season -- some we picked too soon, some didn't live up to the hype,  some left town, many were all we hoped for and more, but nobody broke our hearts. We had a great time saying goodbye to our 2021 crew and making room for the new guys. Wander Franco makes a case for being a 2022 Rays boyfriend with his tremendous deal. We teach vocabulary words in English and Spanish this week, setting you up for the deadline to tender contracts to players with six or fewer years of playing time (Super Two!), and for understanding the calls if you are watching winter ball instead of negotiations (carrera!). LIDOM provides cover for Yasiel Puig and Marcel Ozuna, and also gives Jose Siri and Mike Brosseau a place to shine. They honor “No Violence Against Women” Day by treating women to a day at the ballpark, and Big Papi will roll out Día de Leyendas to support his children's fund on December 5. 12/5 is also the next double header in the Puerto Rican Women's series, currently tied at one each. Pottymouth will need your support this week as her CPBL Lions are making her lose sleep. Lastly, we prepare you for a likely lock-out as the CBA needs to wrap up on December 1st and it is not looking good. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' offseason so far, relative to the rest of the market. Kevin Gausman, obviously a top target of the Giants, signed a new deal with the Blue Jays yesterday for five years, $110 million. It's a strong deal for Gausman, but it actually looks pretty reasonable compared to some of the other names flying off the board. Max Scherzer, another Giants target, signed with the New York Mets for three years, $130 million (a whopping $43.3 million per season, a new record). What does the rest of the market look like? Will the Giants get in on the frenzied activity? There was a report this morning that Alex Wood is getting his physical with the Giants today, so that would give them three solid starters locked up for at least two years in Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, and Logan Webb. They'd still be in an enviable financial situation, with a solid roster and tons of cash available to spend. The question is how much of it they're going to spend. Finally, Ben discusses Mike Yastrzemski officially reaching Super Two status. It's great news for Yaz, who will now make something closer to $3 million than what he otherwise would have made (near the league minimum).Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms

Small market teams have to build from within. How many times have you heard that? Well, Doug Gray wrote a post about their inability to do that, over the last several years, and he and Jeff unpack that post. They also talk Nick Senzel's season opener and what the whole Super Two thing is about, anyway. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Host Adam Burke was back on the airwaves with another edition of The Bettor's Box, BangTheBook.com's MLB betting podcast to kick off the month of June. It was a good time to take a look at how to handicap minor leaguers getting the call and spot starters filling in for injured pitchers because there have been so many of them this season. League average isn't what it used to be in the big leagues, so handicapping these unknowns can lead to a lot of good betting edges if you know what to look for. Along with that, Adam took a look Down the Lines at some line moves from the last couple of days and also gave out a best bet for Thursday night's action. The Super Two deadline is coming, which means top prospects will be making appearances soon and they could have betting impact. Finally, Adam previewed three weekend series with some picks and analysis.
