To make the beauty and grandeur of nature accessible to everyone, Bartram's Garden teamed up with a local audio describer and visually impaired accessibility consultant to produce audio descriptions of three gardens on their grounds. Join White Canes Connect contributor Simon Bonenfant, as he speaks with audio describer Beth Feldman Brant, along with Accessibility Coach Charmaine Parrish, about everything you need to know as part of this exciting initiative! Recorded audio descriptions include a Know Before you Go, detailing an introduction and orientation to the Welcome Center, Ann Bartram Carr Garden, the Historic Bartram House, and the Common Flower Garden. You can access the recordings here. https://www.bartramsgarden.org/audio-descriptions/ The audio descriptions will be debuted at the upcoming Bartram's Garden Spring Fest on Saturday, April 19. The fest runs from 10:00 to 2:00 PM, with the audio description portion from 12:30 to 1:30. Here is a description of what to expect.  “As part of Bartram's Garden's SpringFest event, join Beth Feldman Brandt and Charmaine Parrish for a guided walking tour featuring their new audio descriptions of select areas of the Garden, including the Ann Bartram Carr Garden, the Historic Bartram House, and the Common Flower Garden.  After we tour together using the recorded descriptions, you are invited to share refreshments and community, and to give feedback on the experience.  Friends and family are also welcome!  Note that while this tour is designed for safe navigation by people with visual impairments, exploring other areas of the Gardens is best done with a sighted companion. Registration is encouraged but not required. Register at https://www.bartramsgarden.org/event/audio-description-tour/.  Light refreshments will be served. In the event of inclement weather, this tour will be rescheduled for Saturday, May 10 at 10 AM. These audio descriptions were provided by Beth Feldman Brandt and Charmaine Parrish as part of the Sowing Excellence Awards, a collaboration of the IDEA Center for Public Gardens and the U.S. Botanic Garden. We are also grateful for the expertise of  Sarah Pharaon as well as staff members Mandy Katz and Emily Constantino in supporting the creation of these audio descriptions.” Those wishing to utilize the service should prepare to bring their mobile device and, if preferred, headphones for the best listening experience. After the 19th, anyone is welcome to come to the specified gardens and listen to the audio descriptions whenever the gardens are open! Employability and Future-Proofing Graduates: Pathways to Success at MDC:

Changing Higher Ed

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2024 35:23

In this transformative era for higher education, institutions are at a crossroads, balancing traditional academic rigor with the urgent need for graduates who are immediately employable and adept at upskilling to meet rapidly changing business demands. Miami Dade College (MDC), under the visionary leadership of President Madeline Pumariega, stands out as a beacon of innovation and adaptability. In this podcast, Pumariega offers a compelling model for aligning curriculum with industry needs, embracing technological advancements, and fostering strategic partnerships to secure students' success in the workforce. Madeline Pumariega leads Miami Dade College with profound insights rooted in her 20+ years of experience in higher education and dedication to uplifting low-SES communities and first-generation students through accessible, quality education.    Key Points Overview Strategic Alignment with Industry Needs: How MDC excels in forming alliances with business partners to directly link education with emerging job opportunities. These collaborations ensure that programs are tailored to the skill sets demanded by key sectors, enhancing graduates' employability. Comprehensive Skill Development: The college champions a holistic approach to education that encompasses academic knowledge, employability skills (including internships and apprenticeships), and digital competencies. These three pillars prepare students to be resilient and adaptable in a future-driven job market. Leading the Way in AI Programs: MDC has proactively embraced AI by integrating it into its curriculum and, in 2023, launching programs specifically designed around AI, including a college-credit Certificate in Artificial Intelligence, an Associates in Science in Artificial Intelligence, and the first Bachelors in Artificial Intelligence approved in the state of Florida. The AI program at MDC saw over 400 students enroll, with the average age being 44. Focus on Workforce Readiness: Through specialized programs and certificates, such as those in cloud computing and healthcare, MDC aligns its offerings with the precise needs of local and national employers, ensuring students are ready to contribute meaningfully to their fields upon graduation. Accessibility and Community Engagement: Initiatives like the Idea Center and partnerships with entities like Amazon Web Services, IBM, and the Mark Cuban Foundation demonstrate MDC's commitment to supporting entrepreneurship and small business growth within the community, further enhancing students' real-world learning and job prospects.   Three Key Takeaways for Higher Education Presidents and Boards Emphasize Industry Partnerships: Strengthen collaboration with industry leaders to ensure educational programs meet current workforce demands. This engagement fosters alignment between graduates' skills and employers' needs, enhancing employability and opening doors for students to make meaningful contributions in their respective fields. Align Budgets with Strategic Priorities: Clearly define your institution's strategic priorities and ensure that budget allocations reflect these values. Whether focusing on reimagining student success, academic excellence, or innovation, financial resources must support these aims, driving impactful outcomes and institutional growth. Cultivate a Culture of Care: Recognize and nurture your human capital—faculty, staff, and leadership—as their well-being directly influences the student experience and success. A culture that values and supports its members can transform an institution, making it a place where students and staff alike feel valued, engaged, and motivated to achieve excellence.   Final Thoughts MDC's proactive approach to education, characterized by its responsiveness to workforce trends, technological innovation, and commitment to accessibility, serves as a powerful model for institutions aiming to prepare students for rapid employability and workforce demands. Under Madeline Pumariega's leadership, MDC exemplifies how colleges can lead the way in bridging the gap between education and employment, ensuring a brighter future for students and communities alike.   Read the transcript on our website →     About Our Podcast Guest Madeline Pumariega is the first female president appointed to lead one of the nation's largest educational institutions, Miami Dade College (MDC). Adding to the historic nature of this appointment is the fact that Pumariega is an alumna of MDC. Prior to becoming MDC's president, Pumariega was appointed the first female and Hispanic chancellor of the Florida College System (FCS). In that role, she designed and implemented strategies to keep college accessible and affordable for Floridians, especially for those entering high-demand job fields. In 2019, Pumariega became the executive vice president and provost of Tallahassee Community College.  In her current role as President, Pumariega has prioritized working with business partners to identify the skills needed by key industries and tailoring higher education programs to match those needs. This intentional forming of strategic alliances and job pathways between companies and MDC students accelerates each graduate's ability to enter the workforce immediately. Driving her relentless pursuit is the passion to develop leaders and build thriving communities. Join the Enabled Disabled Community: https://www.enabledchat.com Universal Design: How "Inclusive Architecture" Benefits Businesses & People Michael Kimmelman, the architecture critic of The New York Times, wrote that the planning and designing of public and commercial spaces for accessibility and diversity shouldn't be seen as a requirement, but instead, as an opportunity, both economic and creative. And he also emphasized that such a vision required a shift in mindset: Universal Design (UD). With one in four American adults living with a disability, it's hard to believe that only a handful of organizations and institutions have truly embraced the benefits of Universal Design, but for some reason, it is still largely misunderstood and rarely applied. Did you know that universally designed spaces don't cost significantly more, are just as aesthetically pleasing, and lead to healthier, more inclusive, and productive environments for more people? This program will change forever–and for the better–the way you look at commercial buildings, public spaces, and bathrooms. Join Gustavo Serafini, host of the Enabled Disabled Podcast, and his guests, Jonathan White, Director of Design Consulting at the IDEA Center in SUNY Buffalo, and Julie Sawchuk, Accessibility Consultant, in a dynamic dialog about the big and small benefits that businesses–and the people in them–derive from UD. In this conversation you will discover: The main goals businesses usually have when designing their commercial spaces How YOUR experience changes, and what you can expect, as a user of universally designed public or commercial spaces What your future house, office building, school, library, government agencies, and shopping centers will look like when they are universally designed And so much more! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/enableddisabled/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enableddisabled/support

Stacey Wood shares what she is doing in her high school entrepreneurship class and how that connects with the book, The Innovator's Mindset. Wood goes into detail about what her students are doing in her class' Idea Center and how they work to be social entrepreneurs and create new products that resolve existing problems. Couros also goes into detail about how to use his 5 Questions to Ask Students at the Start of the Year resource. This closing question is one that Couros is consistently asked, especially by high school teachers: Couros asks Wood, as a high school teacher, when you have students who come into your classroom and are conditioned to have that mentality of “just give me the test,” how do we un-condition our students from that mentality? Wood shares some great advice in response to this question that has helped her as she works to create opportunities for students to show their learning. Jessica gives more information on ESTEEM, which is Notre Dame's master of science degree program at the University of Notre Dame. Here, graduate students are equipped with the skills needed to launch new businesses, become innovators within large corporations, and be leaders of dynamic, innovative teams. We also hear from Renee Yaseen, an undergraduate at Notre Dame as she shares her start-up company FriendOver and her experiences working with the IDEA Center.   #BoldFail is a celebration of strategic failure. No profitable startup or entrepreneur goes from success to success. All experience multiple challenges and failures along the way. Failure by itself is neutral, neither good or bad. The question is: what did we learn from it? Failure in operations and failure that results from complexity can be prevented with proper processes, oversight, and care. But failure that comes from pushing beyond boundaries is a commendable, necessary step because it breaks new ground on the path to discovery. #BoldFail is a celebration of the mindset that sees the future, seizes opportunity and embraces failure as a routine step toward success, a chance to persevere or pivot rather than quit.

Bienvenidos a Inconfundiblemente Latino, soy Julio Muñiz. GG: En primer lugar, a hacer Networking. Queremos inspirar a...
