Bible Reading: James 3:1-12Kaylee threw down her phone and fell back on her bed. I can't believe Emma isn't inviting me to her party. I thought we were friends! Just then Mom walked into her room. "Kaylee, please make your bed and take your laundry basket to the laundry room." Kaylee groaned. "I don't feel like doing it right now, Mom. You're on the way to the laundry room, so why don't you take it yourself.""Kaylee! Do not talk to me like that. We each have chores we have to do. One of yours is to make your bed and pick up your room.""I'll do it later," Kaylee said.Mom frowned at her. "Kaylee," she said in a warning tone.Kaylee got up and started to smooth out her sheets. "I'm not sure why I talked back to you. I guess I felt angry because Emma just told me I wasn't invited to her party." She sighed as she fluffed her pillow. "Emma's attitude sometimes changes for no reason, and she can really hurt my feelings. One minute she's talking about all the fun we had at youth group, and the next she's telling me I'm not invited to her party. It's like her words turn instantly rude!" She looked at her mom. "But then I just did the same thing to you, didn't I? What makes us change like that?" "Sometimes feeling disappointed or mad can make us want to hurt others," replied Mom. "We need to watch what we say when we feel upset or hurt. And if we do sin with our words, we should ask for forgiveness right away--from both God and the person we hurt." Mom put an arm around Kaylee. "Remember that Jesus loves you, me, and Emma all the same. He forgives us when we hurt others with our words, and He'll also help us speak in a loving way, even when we feel upset."Kaylee nodded. "I'm sorry, Mom. I guess I was upset at Emma and took it out on you." She sighed. "I was really looking forward to Emma's party. Now what am I supposed to do?""Well," said Mom, "Jesus forgives us when we hurt others, and He also helps us forgive others when they hurt us."-Christine CollierHow About You?What kind of words come out of your mouth? Does it change depending on how you feel? Are you more likely to say rude or mean words when you feel disappointed or upset? When we say hurtful words in response to feeling hurt ourselves, it only makes things worse. If you've hurt someone with your words, ask them to forgive you, and ask Jesus for forgiveness too. Then trust Him to help you show His love to others through your words all the time.Today's Key Verse:Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up. Jon uses Winston Churchill's and Spiderman's phrase "with great power comes great responsibility" to ease us into today's passage. Words can uplift or wound. He takes apart several of James's parallels recognising how "spreading like wildfire" is yet more relevant in today's society given the proliferation of social media - "be quick to listen and slow to type". Reflect on what you say but don't be silent - words heal as well as harm.

There is an added layer of difficulty if you are a parent to a chronically ill child. In the first part of the episode I share some of the "don'ts" I learned along the way. I shared the resource "Taming Your Tongue"  Here's the link: https://amzn.to/3Iu4KdC The second half is more positive and I shared some of the "do"s. One of those suggestions was to start a file with all the medical information your child will need when they launch as an adult and are responsible for all of their medical stuff.  One parent created a book on Ehlers-Danlos after her child requested she put together all her knowledge. That book is now the go-to authority on EDS. Taming your tongue will improve your relationships and your life #5. Watch lest your negativity begins to destroy your positivity.(Your tongue is a powerful tool) #  The positive tongue. We need to train our tongues – forming good habits so that what comes out of our mouths will be: Positive Up-lifting Up-building Encouraging Exhorting Inspiring A blessing Just “Ooze-positive” Will it be like this 24/7? I'm sure you won't but we need to train our tongues to be positive at least 80% of the time. Proverbs 22:11 (Amp) - He who loves purity and the pure in heart and who is gracious in speech - because of the grace of his lips will he have the King for his friend. We really need to tame our tongues in the area of our confession. Matthew 12:34b (NIV) - … for out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The word of God conceived in the human spirit, formed by the tongue and spoken out of the mouth will become a creative power that will work for you. Our tongues should always rise to the level of the Word of God. As Christians we should be known as people who speak positively – speaking the Word of God into situations. Story of the man that joined the monastery: They were allowed to speak only 2 words every 7 years. After the 1st 7 years, he met with Father Superior who asked him what his 2 words were. “Food's bad”, said the man. After another 7 years, he was asked what are your 2 words? “Bed's hard”. Another 7 years pass (21 years in the monastery) he was asked for his 2 words. “I quit!” Well, I'm not surprised”, said the disgusted Father Superior.  “All you've done since you got here is complain!” The power of our words: A careless word may ignite strife. A cruel word may wreck a life. A bitter word may he instil. A brutal word may smile & kill. BUT A gracious word may smooth the way. A joyous word may light the day. A timely word may lessen stress. A loving word may heal and bless. Contrary to what we've heard: “Talk is not cheap” Talk is very expensive. Our words are powerful. What we say affects what we get from others and what others get from us. A list of POSITIVE ways to train your tongue each day - if you make these a habit in your life, you & others will see an awesome life change! Pray Share your faith Express gratitude Tell the truth Admit a mistake Confess your faults or weaknesses Comfort someone who is hurting Give a sincere compliment Pledge your support and carry it through Defend someone against negative criticism Discourage gossip Express appreciation Express hope or enthusiasm Encourage someone to persevere Express concern for another Speak of God's goodness A positive tongue is a sure sign of true spiritual growth and maturity. James 3:2 (Amp) – For we all often stumble and fall and offend in many things. And if anyone does not offend in speech [never says the wrong things], he is a fully developed character and a perfect man, able to control his whole body and to curb his entire nature. Our ultimate aim is:  1 Peter 2:21-22 (Amp) – 21For even to this were you called [it is inseparable from your vocation]. For Christ also suffered for you, leaving you [His personal] example, so that you should follow in His footsteps.   22He was guilty of no sin, neither was deceit (guile) ever found on His lips. *Guile – Dishonest / Underhanded / Devious Make a godly decision for your life to speak positively. Only you can do it. Maybe you have held onto your weakness and failures because of having an untamed, negative tongue. God's message to you today: Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Ephesians 3:20 (Amp) – Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams] God wants you to trust Him. His strength is just waiting for your positive confession. You are what you say and the confession you make. Revelation 12:11 (NIV) – They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. “If we understood the power of our thoughts, we would guard them more closely. If we understood the awesome power of our words, we would prefer silence to almost anything negative. In our thoughts and words, we create our own weaknesses and our own strengths. Our limitations and joys begin in our hearts. We can always replace negative with positive.”   – Betty Eadie My Never again list: Never again will I confess  “I can't,” for I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Phil.4: 13) Never again will I confess lack, for my God shall supply all of my need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.(Phil.4:19) Never again will I confess fear, for God hath not given me the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of  a sound mind. (2 Tim. 1:7) Never again will I confess doubt and lack of faith, for God hath given to every man the measure of faith. (Rom 12:3) Never again will I confess weakness, for the Lord is the strength of my life (Ps 27:1) and the people that know their God shall be strong and do exploits. (Dan 11:32) Never again will I confess supremacy of Satan over my life, for greater is He that is within me than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4) Never again will I confess defeat, for thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ. (2 Cor 2:14) Never again will I confess lack of wisdom for Christ Jesus has made unto me wisdom from God. (1 Cor 1:30) Never again will I confess sickness, for with His stripes I am healed (Isa 53:5) and Jesus Himself took my infirmities and bore my sicknesses. (Math 8:17) Never again will I confess worries and frustration, for I am casting all my cares upon Him who cares for me (1 Peter 5:7).  In Christ I am “carefree”. Never again will I confess bondage, for where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2 Cor 3:17).  My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Never again will I confess condemnation, for there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:1).  I am in Christ  :therefore, I am free from condemnation. - o 0 o -

Taming your tongue will improve your relationships and your life #4. What is in the well of your heart will show up in the bucket of your mouth. Jesus said: Matthew 15:18-19(NIV) – 18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ‘unclean.' 19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. Wisdom is divided into 2 parts: - Having a great deal to say; - and NOT saying it. The boastful frog: Two geese were about to start southward on their annual autumn migration, when they were approached by a frog to take him with them. One of the geese expressing their willingness to do so if a means of conveyance could be devised, the frog produced a long stalk of grass, got the two geese to take it one by each end, while he clung to it by his mouth in the middle. In this manner the three were making their journey when they were noticed from below by some men. The men loudly expressed their admiration for the device and wondered who had been clever enough to discover it.  Whereupon the vainglorious frog opened his mouth to say, “It was I,” lost his hold, fell to the earth and was dashed to pieces. Moral:  When you have a good thing going, keep your mouth shut. As a child of God, God wants for us to bring our tongue under the control and authority of the Holy Spirit.  It's not an optional extra – that's the model Jesus died for. Have you ever wondered why when you tell your doctor you are tired and exhausted, he immediately looks at your tongue? Why do you view patients' tongues as part of your practice? Answer: I use the tongue to gather information about a patient's health and well-being. It's a way to get clues about what's going on in your body before it erupts. 1 Peter 3:10 (Amp) - For let him who wants to enjoy life and see good days [good-whether apparent or not] keep his tongue free from evil and his lips from guile (treachery, deceit). treachery = break trust deceit = dishonest How important to God is the quality of our tongues? Isaiah 6:1-8 (Amp) - In the year that King Uzziah died, [in a vision] I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the skirts of His train filled the [most holy part of the] temple.  2Above Him stood the seraphim; each had six wings: with two [each] covered his [own] face, and with two [each] covered his feet, and with two [each] flew.  3And one cried to another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!  4And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who cried, and the house was filled with smoke.  5Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone and ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! 6Then flew one of the seraphim [heavenly beings] to me, having a live coal in his hand which he had taken with tongs from off the altar; 7And with it he touched my mouth and said, Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity and guilt are taken away, and your sin is completely atoned for and forgiven.  8Also, I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, whom shall I send? And who will go for Us? Then said I, here am I; send me. When your tongue is touched you will be anointed for service. In the book of James 3 – 2 things James warns us about in this chapter: 1.  That we are revealed by our mouth. 2.  That our mouth has tremendous potential for disaster. Proverbs 18:20-21 (Amp) - A man's (moral) self shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; and with the consequence of his words, he must be satisfied (whether good or evil).  Death and life are in the power of the tongue and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it (for death or life). It's our tongue that sets us apart from the world.  Children of God need to have a different tongue. That's why God calls us to have a Tamed Tongue. If we do: - It will be clear evidence that we are Christians. - It's evidence we're walking in obedience. Here are some more tongues we need to consider in our daily walk with Jesus. # The belittling [afkraak] tongue. Ephesians 4:29 (Amp) - Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God's favor) to those who hear it. If you belittle, you'll be little! Do people feel better about themselves after spending time with you, or do you focus on their shortcomings rather than their good points? If someone speaks well of a person you're not to fond of, do you reply with a negative response and run the person down – belittling them? 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NASB) - Therefore ENCOURAGE one another and BUILD UP one another, just as you are doing. During a building operation a hammer is used for demolition as well as the construction process.  Our words are like that – they can tear down or they can build. How do you use your words mostly?  Is it your normal behaviour to build?  If not, ask God to help you to change your heart.  Make a quality choice to form a habit to be an encourager who builds up! May we choose to be big, not be little. # The cynical [sinies] tongue. (Distrustful – Not sincere) Cynic:  Always finding fault; making comments disrespectfully; making something important less so. They criticize acts of kindness; Always critical of peoples motives Afrikaans:  skerp / sinies Eliab, David's oldest brother was a true cynic.  David knew who his God was and that he had a covenant with Him. He could have destroyed what God wanted to do. 1 Samuel 17:36 (Amp) – Your servant killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God! Obviously, this was not for Eliab. 1 Samuel 17:28-29 (Amp) - Now Eliab his eldest brother heard what he said to the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, why did you come here? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and evilness of heart; for you came down that you might see the battle. And David said, what have I done now? Was it not a harmless question? Eliab whose name meant “God is my Father” - imagine one with such a name running from the giant and being cynical about David's confidence and his motives. A person, who is cynical, scorns [spot] the motives of others.  It's like venom; it poisons the atmosphere wherever it is present. Find a cynical tongue – it can drag weaker minded people down. We must really observe our comments wherever we are. If you identify things coming out of your mouth that you know ought not to be coming out of your mouth… When bitter water comes out of your sweet fountain… This will be the key: To your spiritual strength or weakness. To your spiritual effectiveness or ineffectiveness. To your spiritual victory or defeat. To your spiritual power or being powerless. James 1:26 (LB) - Anyone who says he is a Christian but doesn't control his sharp tongue is just fooling himself, and his religion isn't worth much. Your spiritual success and maturity ‘gauge' is your tongue. - o 0 o -

Taming your tongue will improve your relationships and your life #3. If your mind should go blank*, don't forget to turn off the sound. Blank*is when= you go into the flesh when you just vent, become ugly, angry, abusive, negative, destroy, and hurt people with your Tongue   By Pastor George Lehman Begin to speak to yourself.  Ask yourself, “How am I doing with my tongue?  Do I need to change?” With a look of satisfaction on her face a woman said to John Wesley:  “My talent is to speak my mind.” John Wesley said: “Woman, God would not care a bit if you buried that talent.” James 1:26 (LB) - Anyone who says he is a Christian but doesn't control his sharp tongue is just fooling himself, and his religion isn't worth much. (What is your religion worth) The clever people have worked out: In 1 week the tongue speaks enough to fill a 500 page book. In a lifetime = 3 000 volumes = 1, 5 million pages. Jesus understood the problem and says in: Matthew 12:36-37 (Amp) - 36But I tell you, on the day of judgment men will have to give account for every idle (inoperative, non-working) word they speak.  37For by your words you will be justified and acquitted and by your words you will be condemned and sentenced. Clearly Jesus is saying we are going to be very accountable for the way we use our tongues. Proverbs 10:19 (Amp) - Where there is much talk there will be no end to sin, but he who keeps his mouth shut does wisely. No one ever got into trouble for what they never say. Let's continue to consider some more aspects of taming our tongue: #5  The slandering[laster/kwaadpraat] tongue. Slanderers make malicious, false or even true statements about others. The intention is to damage their reputation, character or good name. The truth is, given certain circumstances, anyone can be tempted to slander (run someone down). Rare is the person who can weigh the faults of others without putting their thumbs on the scales. You'll never move up if you're continually running somebody down. Proverbs 10:18 (NLT) - To hide hatred is to be a liar; to slander is to be a fool*. *Fool – someone who disregards God's word. One thing is that slanderers don't have a place in heaven: Psalm 15:1-3 (Amp) - Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary?  Who may live on your holy hill?  He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart and no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman. Some people are so insecure and easily threatened, they need to run others down to make themselves look better in the eyes of others. Resorting to slander is clear evidence that this person is not secure in God's promises. Think about a time when you made slanderous remarks about someone: What was your motivation for doing it? Why did you feel the need to blacken another's character? When we attempt to slander others by running them down with our tongue, we sow evil seeds for which we will surely reap the consequences. I therefore remind you: Proverbs 13:3 (Amp) - He who guards his mouth keeps his life, but he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. #6  The gossiping tongue. The difference between a slander & gossip. GOSSIP SLANDER DEFINITION Gossip refers to idle talk or rumor, especially about personal or private affairs of others Slander refers to the act of spreading rumors or lies about a person to cause damage purposely PURPOSE May not be to cause hard deliberately Done with intention of harming one's reputation DAMAGE Merely involves talking about someone who is not there and is not as damaging as slander Damages one's reputation and good name PUNISHMENT Not punished by law Punishable by law   Proverbs 18:8 (Amp) - The words of a gossip are like ‘choice morsels'; they go down to a man's inmost parts. Do you sometimes engage in idle and malicious talk about the personal affairs of another person? Gossip is like a delectable ‘choice morsel' that we find impossible to resist.  It's like a chocolate you can't say ‘no' to it when it's being offered. I'm certain every one of us has been guilty of this pastime; as a bearer or a hearer at one time or another. The downside of such behaviour is that it lowers your sense of self-worth, because when you gossip, you tend to realise you're not walking in integrity. You see, a true child of God feels best about himself when he does things that are pleasing to God. Gossip does not usually start with the intention of harming someone; whereas Slander is a deliberate attempt to harm someone's reputation. What's the solution?  How do you stop gossiping? Catch yourself before you indulge. Ask yourself why you are being a bearer of such news. Do you need to be the centre of attraction? Do you feel superior to know something bad/negative about somebody that the hearer doesn't know? Why make your ears a dustbin by receiving gossip? It's been my experience that people who are serious about growing spiritually, spend time with God in prayer are less likely to waste time gossiping about the affairs of others. It is very difficult to gossip about someone you love and care about. Here's a warning: Proverbs 20:19 (NLT) - A gossip tells secrets, so don't hang around with someone who talks too much. As I said before:  Nobody ever got into trouble for something they never said. If you're serious about being OBEDIENT to God and eliminating from your life… A lying tongue A hasty tongue A divisive tongue An argumentative tongue A slandering tongue and A gossiping tongue … you need to get a positive, effective action plan in place. Ask the Holy Spirit to convict you when you get out of line. Psalm 141:3 (Amp) - Set a guard O Lord over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips. A great idea: Maybe get a friend who you will be accountable to. Make an effort to only speak that which is positive; that which builds up; encourages and motivates. Romans 14:12-13 (Amp) - And so each of us shall give an account of himself [give an answer in reference to judgment] to God.  Then let us no more criticize and blame and pass judgment on one another, but rather decide and endeavor never to put a stumbling block or an obstacle or a hindrance in the way of a brother. -o0o-

Taming your tongue will improve your relationships and your life #2. A tongue was intended to be a divine ORGAN, but we often allow Satan to play on it. by Pastor George Lehman Consider this word in the light of building loving, serving relationships. We need to have an active program of change in place.  We need to be improving in our spiritual lives otherwise there's a serous problem in our walk with God. Opposite of progress is regress (vordering is agter uitgang) To regress means to return to a former stage of life or a less developed state. Proverbs 12:18 (Amp) - There is one who speaks rashly like a piercing of a word; but the tongue of the wise heals. Clearly the unwise use their tongue to hurt, to breakdown, to destroy We are going to look at the various ways our tongue affects our daily lives. Proverbs 21:23 (Amp) - He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from troubles. #2  The hasty tongue. Proverbs 29:20 (Amp) - Do you see a man who is hasty in his words?  There is more hope for a [self-confident] fool* than for him. *Fool – someone who behaves without discipline Have you sometimes offended someone because you did not engage your brain before shifting your tongue into drive? Have you ever made a commitment to God or man without giving it much thought or consideration and then went back on your word? What does this say about our growth development? James 3:2 (Amp) - For we all often stumble and fall and offend in many things. And if anyone does not offend in speech [never says the wrong things], he is a fully developed character and a perfect man, able to control his whole body and to curb his entire nature. How we need to depend on the Holy Spirit to direct our speech so that we don't innocently offend others by what we may hastily say. Proverbs 18:13 (Amp) - He who answers a matter before he hears the facts – it's folly and shame to him. If we are going to promote unity, we need to practice NOT being easily offended.  Give others the benefit of the doubt when they have a hasty tongue.  Don't you also have one? God wants us to have integrity and keep our promises.  Not make hasty commitments and fail to deliver. 1 Chronicles 29:17 (NIV) - I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with INTEGRITY.  All these things have I given willingly and with honest intent… Ecclesiastes 5:2 (Amp) - Be not rash with your mouth and let not your heart be hasty to utter a word before God.  For God is in heaven and you are on the earth; Therefore, let your words be few. If you are a person with a hasty tongue you need to STOP, THINK and PRAY before you speak. James 1:19 (Amp) - Understand this, my beloved brethren.  Let every man be quick to hear (a ready listener), slow to speak, slow to take offence and get angry. #3  The divisive [onenigheid] tongue.   Matthew 5:9 (Amp) - Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God. One of Satan's most effective strategies for hindering any effort which two people undertake is divide and conquer. He knows the power and blessing that results from unity.  His plan is to bring division which destroys unity and harmony. Sadly, if we don't guard our tongues, we can so easily be peace-BREAKERS. The bible warns against being a divisive person: Proverbs 6:14-15 (Amp) - Willful and contrary* in his heart, he devises trouble, vexation*, and evil continually; he lets loose discord and sows it.  Therefore, upon him shall the crushing weight of calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken, and that without remedy. Contrary – opposite of what is expected. Vexation – Frustration Paul calls the church to pursue peace.  Not only must we refrain from causing division, but we must also become active agents of peace. Ephesians 4:3 (Amp) - Try always to be led along together by the Holy Spirit, and so be at PEACE with one another. Stop being over sensitive. Stop being offended over harmless statements. Stop reading more into comments than what was intended. #4  The argumentative [skoorsoekerig, twisgierig, stryerig]    tongue. Proverbs 20:3 (NLT) - Avoiding a fight is a mark of honour; only fools insist on quarreling. Unlike a divisive tongue whose actions destroy unity between people an argumentative person enjoys looking for opportunities to have an argument with anyone who may have a different viewpoint from theirs; always getting people on the defensive, causing unending quarrels. The quarreller's goal is not to add value to someone's life, but rather show people up. Proverbs 17:14 (NLT) - Beginning a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out. What an awesome responsibility we have as God's children to guard what comes out of our mouths. Say this to God but beware of a HASTY tongue! Psalm 39:1 (Amp) - I said, I will take heed and guard my ways, that I may sin not with my tongue; I will muzzle my mouth as with a bridle while the wicked are before me. -o0o-

Taming your tongue will improve your relationships and your life. #1   The Christian should learn two things about his tongue – how to hold it and how to use it. If you can master this your life will improve greatly By: Pastor George Lehman Story of butcher: The mother was waiting for the butcher, who was late.  This was back in the days when butchers made house calls.  She told Johnny, "I'm going upstairs, if the butcher comes, let me know. I want to talk to him." Johnny forgot who his mother wanted to see, so when the minister called, he shouted upstairs, "Ma, that man's here now." The mother answered, "I can't come now, give him the money out of my purse, and tell him we didn't like his tongue last week, and we're going to change!" Story of the Board meeting: The pastor announced that there was to be the Board Meeting at the conclusion of the service. When he saw a complete stranger standing in the front of the pulpit shortly after the closing prayer, he asked him if he could help him in some way. "I'm here for the meeting," he announced. The pastor replied, "Oh, that's only for the Board members." The answer: "If there's anybody more bored than me, I'd like to meet him." Well I trust you won't be bored with this word BUT CHALLENGED We need to know this, “We cannot consistently perform and use our tongues in one way and expect a different result. Our lives need to be in a constant process of change for the better.” How true - some people have eyes that see not, ears that hear not, but there are very few people who have tongues that talk not. It's said that teachers often teach what they need to learn themselves. Well, I am firstly speaking to myself.  I don't know about you, but I want a tongue that always speaks what is pleasing to God. Psalm 19:14 (LB) - May my spoken words and unspoken thoughts be pleasing even to You, O Lord my Rock and my Redeemer.   James 3:8-10 (Amp) - But the human tongue can be tamed by no man. It is a restless (undisciplined, irreconcilable) evil, full of deadly poison.  With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who were made in God's likeness!  Out of the same mouth come forth blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not to be so. Our only hope for the tongue is the Spirit of God.  It must be brought into subjection by Him on a daily basis. We need to actively ask God to help us become sensitive to any negative uses of our tongue. Unless you make an active, wilful decision to having something in place to guard your tongue, you will never taste victory or fully develop into what God has purposed for your life. Isaiah 50:4 (Amp) - [The servant of God says] The Lord God has given me the tongue of a disciple and of one who is taught, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary… A changed heart should house a changed tongue. Words are the vehicle through which we communicate our thoughts and attitudes.  The tongue is the driver. Therefore, moving into spiritual maturity requires that we learn to speak the right words in the right season and for the right reason. If you find you are constantly at war with your tongue, then this word on the tongue is especially for all of us who want to become spiritually empowered; to transform our tongue into a God pleasing wellspring of life. How we choose to use our tongues will have consequences: Proverbs 18:21 (Amp) - Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit. It can make or break; Create or destroy; Encourage or discourage; Build up or break down; It will either propel you into your purpose to soar like an eagle or it will cause you to crash land and be like a turkey. Over the next few weeks, we are going to discuss important aspects of taming our tongue. #1  The lying tongue. Proverbs 12:22 (Amp) - Lying lips are extremely disgusting and hateful to the Lord, but they who deal faithfully are His delight. As God's children everything we say and do must be based on truth.  Lies make a shaky foundation for our relationship with God and others. 1 Peter 3:10 (NIV) - For whoever would love life and see good days must keep [operative word]  his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. Why do people practice ‘deception' Lies, half truths, exaggeration? Many do it for financial gain – you lie on your tax return; For social advantage – you lie about who you are to try to impress people - you make out to be something you are not; To hide some sinful act – you lie to cover up sin so you won't be caught out; Or to obtain other benefits – lying to get any advantage, i.e. a job application. In Genesis 27 we see Jacob, whose name was “trickster”, deceived his father to get his brothers' birth right blessing. Engaging in deceitfulness is a slap in God's face and has dire consequences. Here's a truth I don't think we really want to know - God has sealed the destiny of every liar. Proverbs 12:19 (Amp) - Truth's lips will be established forever, but a lying tongue is only momentary. Revelation 21:8 (Amp) -    But as for the cowards and the ignoble and the contemptible and the cravenly lacking in courage and the cowardly submissive, and as for the unbelieving and faithless, and as for the depraved and defiled with abominations, and as for murderers and the lewd and adulterous and the practicers of magic arts and the idolaters (those who give supreme devotion to anyone or anything other than God) and all LIARS (those who knowingly convey untruth by word or deed)--[all of these shall have] their part in the lake that blazes with fire and brimstone. This is the second death. The Psalmist knew the consequences of lies and deceitfulness.  He asked God to deliver him out of this pit: Psalm 120:20 (Amp) - Deliver me, O Lord, from lying lips from a *deceitful tongue. *bedrieglik Are you really trusting God through the inner working of the Holy Spirit by always speaking what's pleasing to God?  Or do you need to join in this prayer?  Ask God to help you so that this proverb will become a reality to you. Proverbs 8:6-8 (Amp) - Hear, for I will speak excellent and princely things; and the opening of my lips shall be for right things.  For my mouth shall utter truth, and wrongdoing is detestable and loathsome to my lips. All the words of my mouth are righteous (upright and in right standing with God); there is nothing contrary to truth or crooked in them.   Psalm 12:1-4 – Help, Lord, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. 2Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception. 3May the Lord cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue 4that says, “We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips -who is our master?”
