MDJ Script/ Top Stories for May 2nd Publish Date: May 2nd Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, May 2nd and Happy Birthday to Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson. ***05.02.24 – BIRTHDAY – DWAYNE JOHNSON*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Kennesaw State Students Hold 2nd Protest for Palestinians Amid Nationwide Demonstrations Man Gets Decade Behind Bars for Stalking West Cobb Woman Smyrna Resident Detained on Murder Charges Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss breakfast ideas instead of vending machines. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Kennesaw State Students Hold Second Protest for Palestinians Amid Nationwide Demonstrations Kennesaw State University students conducted their second demonstration supporting Palestinian rights, amidst calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and urging the university to divest from companies tied to Israel. This action is in coordination with the Party for Socialism and Liberation in Atlanta. Notably, the protests have adhered to peaceful standards, abiding by university guidelines for unregistered events. A significant march took place through the campus, with university police providing traffic control without direct intervention. The student organizers, while focusing current efforts on supporting their counterparts at Emory University facing arrest, hinted at possible encampments during KSU's upcoming commencement. University officials are yet to comment. This protest is part of a larger wave of campus demonstrations across the country, calling for educational institutions to sever financial connections with Israeli-linked entities. STORY 2: Man Gets Decade Behind Bars for Stalking West Cobb Woman Michael Lydon Strong, 43, from Dallas, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stalking his former girlfriend and her 13-year-old son in late 2020 in west Cobb. Already serving six years for selling cocaine, Strong was found guilty of aggravated stalking and disorderly conduct. The victim and her son had sought a restraining order against Strong due to his violent behavior. He violated the order by breaking into their home while they slept. The son called 911, and officers arrived while Strong was still inside. Strong's earliest release date is Oct. 12, 2030. Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. emphasized the office's commitment to protecting domestic violence victims. STORY 3: Smyrna Man Arrested for Murder Bobby Pegues, 40, of Smyrna, was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing Travis Johnson, 48, in Marietta. Pegues faces charges including aggravated assault and murder. The incident occurred on Lorene Drive around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Johnson later succumbed to his injuries at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Pegues is held without bond at the county jail. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb County Police at 770-499-3945. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Annual GHC Youth Fishing Rodeo Returns This June Georgia Highlands College will host its Annual GHC Youth Fishing Rodeo on June 1 at Paris Lake in Rome. The event, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., is free for children under 15. Parents can assist, but not fish. Prizes will be awarded for the heaviest fish in each age category. Other free activities will be available. Loaner gear will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Food will be available for purchase, along with a cash-only raffle. The lake will be stocked with fish prior to the event. For more information, visit the college's website. STORY 5: Whataburger Seeks Approval for New East Cobb Location Whataburger, a fast-food chain expanding in Cobb County, is eyeing a fifth location at the former O'Charley's site in east Cobb. The proposed 7,000-square-foot building at Sandy Plains and Shallowford roads includes a two-lane drive-thru, which conflicts with land-use restrictions set in a 1999 settlement. These restrictions prohibit fast-food restaurants or drive-thru services. Whataburger's request for a site plan approval, not rezoning, will go before the Cobb Board of Commissioners on May 21. The chain already has two locations in Kennesaw and plans for another in Acworth, pending construction. We'll be back in a moment Break: INGLES 5 STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss breakfast ideas instead of vending machines. Locked On Ole Miss - Daily podcast on Ole Miss Rebels Football, Basketball & Baseball
Today's Locked on Ole Miss podcast we talk about JJ Pegues coming back to the Ole Miss Rebels and Lane Kiffin and Pete Golding for the 2024 Season. We talked about the importance of the Lines in the 2024 CFB Expanded Playoff year and this will be a major piece of the Rebels puzzle going into next year. We also talk about the Top 5 players that Ole Miss should try hardest to retain and why that works. In the second segment of the show we talk about a cryptic tweet that was sent out by Walker Jones that featured five sharks. Was he just really excited about JJ Pegues or is each shark a player coming back. I do think that releasing the first name on Wednesday leading up to the transfer portal means something. We discuss value and the need for a balanced team as well. In our final segment of the day we talk about Chris Beard and the Ole Miss Rebels men's basketball team and the improvement they have made from Game 1 to Game 6 that was a 20 pt win over the NC State Wolfpack as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge in Basketball. The Memphis Tigers come into to town and Ole Miss has the ultimate free shot after the NC State game and they will do it will some reinforcements in Mousa Cisse. WANT MORE OLE MISS SPORTS CONTENT? For this episode, I'm turning the table by interviewing the interviewer! I first met my next guest when the editor and publisher of the Women Who Podcast magazine, Kathy Baron, asked if I'd like to be interviewed for the 2023 Fall issue. And given I love all things podcasting, I of course said yes. Thus began a new friendship and relationship with writer, copywriter, editor, content creator, and fellow podcaster Chelsea Pegues (Pig-geese). Chelsea has a Professional Writing degree in Communications from Southern New Hampshire University, graduated Summa Cum Laude and is a member of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society. For 14 years, she served as a Senior Administrative Professional at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and continues to have a passion for learning, communication, media and creating content across multiple mediums. Her desire is to apply her creativity and skills to projects that make a positive impact in the world. We'll be chatting about how her original podcast ‘The Sticky Eddie Podcast', with her co-host Suzanne Michele, and their current one, ‘Let's Try This Again…Random Chats About the Chaos of Life', is doing just that! So let's meet Ms. “smarty-pants” by welcoming Chelsea Pegues to 19 Stories… Chelsea can be reached via the following: Business email: chelsea.pegues@gmail.com A new business website is under construction: chelseaelizabethwrites.com in the near future. As the enduring "last frontier," Alaska proves an indispensable context for examining the form and function of American colonialism, particularly in the shift from western continental expansion to global empire. In this richly theorized work, Juliana Hu Pegues evaluates four key historical periods in U.S.-Alaskan history: the Alaskan purchase, the Gold Rush, the emergence of salmon canneries, and the World War II era. In each, Hu Pegues recognizes colonial and racial entanglements between Alaska Native peoples and Asian immigrants. In the midst of this complex interplay, the American colonial project advanced by differentially racializing and gendering Indigenous and Asian peoples, constructing Asian immigrants as "out of place" and Alaska Natives as "out of time." Counter to this space-time colonialism, Native and Asian peoples created alternate modes of meaning and belonging through their literature, photography, political organizing, and sociality. Offering an intersectional approach to U.S. empire, Indigenous dispossession, and labor exploitation, Space-Time Colonialism: Alaska's Indigenous and Asian Entanglements (UNC Press, 2021) makes clear that Alaska is essential to understanding both U.S. imperial expansion and the machinations of settler colonialism. Juliana Hu Pegues is associate professor in the Department of Literatures in English at Cornell University. Alize Arıcan is a Society of Fellows Postdoctoral Scholar at Boston University and an incoming Assistant Professor of Anthropology at CUNY—City College, focusing on urban renewal, futurity, care, and migration.
