A retired Green Beret simply could not lose another soldier in the Global War on Terror. He called together a group of Special Forces veterans from the Army, Navy and CIA to join him in one last mission. As the US withdrew after 20 years in Afghanistan and the Taliban seized control, their friend, an American-trained Afghan commando, had to be saved. Operation Pineapple Express will likely go down as one of the greatest rescue missions in history. What makes it even more interesting and inspirational is the fact that it was mostly organized by civilians – retired Special Forces operators, Congressional staff, and state department personnel. In the midst of the horror and chaos of our withdrawal from Kabul, Pineapple Express was able to get approximately 1,000 Afghan allies and their families on evacuation flights. It was just one among several operations conducted by volunteer groups. Lt. Col Scott Mann is a retired Green Beret and was one of the principle organizers of the effort. He describes the events in his book “Operation Pineapple Express”.  It all began with a plea Scott received from Nezam, an Afghan Army Special Forces NCO who had served with Scott. Nezam was receiving threatening texts from the Taliban and knew he had to get out of the country, but his application for the special visa he was promised was mired in bureaucracy. “We didn't have the resources, we didn't have the authority, and we didn't have the means. But we know what a promise is.” Once they got Nezam to safety, Scott's phone started blowing up with messages from other operators asking for help with other at risk Afghan partners. Task Force Pineapple would eventually be comprised of over 100 volunteers. Scott's book also shares the tremendous stresses placed upon his volunteers. Many had battled to put the war behind them but found themselves managing a new mission from the sanctity of their homes. Scott discusses the serious long term implications of the way the withdrawal was handled and the moral injury to the Veterans who served in Afghanistan. Scott and his wife formed Operation Pineapple Express Relief to fund continued efforts to help at risk allies. Operation Recovery is also still helping get allies out. TAKEAWAY – “We may be done with al-Qaeda and ISIS but they aren't done with us. The graveyard of empires will follow us home.”

In Episode 76 I sit down with Lyla Kohistany and Ashley Sogge. Both women are military veterans and Lyla is an Afghan refugee herself that fled Afghanistan in the 80s. They served overseas as active-duty service members and saw the need to help the refugees in the countries that are plagued by war. Now in a civilian capacity both Lyla and Ashley are working with Task Force Pineapple, not only to facilitate relocating Afghan refugees, but also further assisting the refugees that have already been relocated. They are also providing aid to the people that are left inside of Afghanistan that hope to one day flee the now Taliban controlled county themselves. Task Force Pineapple will be renamed “Honor the Promise” officially on January 1st and they received their 501C3 status. James Gordon Meek is an Emmy, SPJ and Overseas Press Club Award-winnng national security investigative reporter for ABC News. Previously he was Senior Investigator and Senior Counterterrorism Advisor to two chairmen of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security. With LTC Scott Mann he created Task Force Pineapple, an ad hoc group of veterans who evacuated hundreds of Afghans after the fall of Kabul in August 2021.  James was my guest this week as we dove into his 90-minute documentary feature "3212 Un-Redacted" which premieres on Hulu on November 11. This is a very special show. As you know, November 11th is Veteran's Day. This is the day where we honor the military veterans who served in our Armed Forces. This Veteran's Day is different. This is the first Veteran's Day since the withdrawal of our forces in Afghanistan. Many Afghanistan veterans are struggling right now. They're struggling to find some meaning to the sacrifices they made and the tragedies they experienced in America's longest war. My guest today is here to help. Lt. Col Scott Mann is an Afghanistan war veteran. He is a former Green Beret and the co-founder of Task Force Pineapple. You've probably heard of them. They're a group of citizens working independently of the government to help Afghan special operators and their families since the withdrawal. Scott is also a writer and producer. He wrote and produced a film called “Last Out — Elegy of a Green Beret” that tells the story of the Afghan war through the voice of the warriors and military family members who lived through it. How far would you go to honor a promise? Over the last few months, our combat veterans have shown us that they will go to great lengths to honor a promise to their Afghan brothers and sisters. It's a lesson for all of us. But sometimes, honoring a promise means helping our neighbors go back into harm's way. Jason grew up in a patriotic family.  He listened to stories of family members who served in the military.  Jason's father was an army paratrooper; his grandfather on this father's side was a highly decorated B-24 pilot who flew over Europe; his grandfather on his mother's side fought for France during World War 2. This legacy was planted within Jason.  Joining the military was the only thing he ever wanted to do.  At age 14, Jason's father told him about a highly elite, highly secret unit with the toughest training in the military who went to airborne school with him.  They were called the Navy SEALS.  It intrigued Jason.  Jason did everything within his power to build his physical strength in order to one day become a SEAL.  Although small in size, he played football and wrestled to help him achieve the goal. Jason enlisted at age 17.  By the time Jason turned 19, he was headed for Navy SEAL training.  BUDS has an attrition rate of 75-80%.  There are approximately 2,400 active SEALS today, and only 12,000 total in American history.  It is a prestigious brotherhood. Jason was eager to prove himself.  That eagerness turned to confidence, which turned to arrogance. Jason was sent to school to become an officer.  While enrolled, September 11, 2001 rocked the nation. After completing school, Jason came back to the SEALs.  What he found was very different.  When Jason began school the U.S. was operating with a peace time military, and he arrived to a war time military. Tactics were different.  Jason had very little combat experience, and yet he was a leader.  Jason did not handle criticism well. The perfect storm erupted in Afghanistan.  Jason went against a commanding officer by going into a valley to help in a fire fight.  Jason was sent to army ranger school to cool his jets. Jason's attitude in ranger school was less than stellar.  He found the training harder than anticipated, but found his footing and a change of attitude. It took a long time for Jason to earn the trust and respect of his brothers, but he did it with patience and hard work. On September 13, 2007 Jason and three others walked into a well planned ambush in Iraq.  Jason was traumatically injured:  two rounds in his left elbow nearly took his arm; a round went through his face and exited the right side of his nose; blew out his right cheek bone; blew out his orbital floor; broke all bones above his eye; and shattered his jaw down to his chin. Jason spent considerable time at Walter Reed hospital, but he did not want people feeling sorry for him.  Jason created a proclamation that now hangs permanently at the wounded ward in Walter Reed.  His proclamation went viral, gaining him a visit with George Bush. Jason is a highly sought after author and motivational speaker.  Most recently you might have heard his name associated with Task Force Pineapple, an operation airlifting people out of Afghanistan.
