Local news matters: Indiana journalism investigations that had direct community, policy impacts in 2023

‘Bad Bars' investigation  The IndyStar investigative team's dive into violence and other issues at Indianapolis bars started in fall 2022.  Journalists Ryan Martin and Tony Cook uncovered more than 600 reports of violent acts tied to Indianapolis bars since 2016, including homicides and gun violence. Their investigation revealed lax oversight and a decline in enforcement of underage alcohol rules. The reporting led to bars being shut down, calls from the community for more oversight, and an increase in funding for an understaffed Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission.   WFYI's School accountability of student seclusion and restraint   And Governor Eric Holcomb signed a new law this legislative session that blocks schools from temporarily removing a student from instruction except as a last resort.  The Commission on Seclusion and Restraint also has to meet twice a year now, rather than once.  These changes, among others came after reporting done by WFYI's Lee Gaines. Her work, based on public records, school logs, audio records of state meetings, and parent interviews– found that some schools do not accurately report incidents of restraint and seclusion to the state. The DOE is also required to conduct an annual audit of seclusion and restraint data reported to the agency by school districts, according to a rule that took effect in 2018. But the department has no record of an audit ever being done for the year before 2023, according to a spokesperson for the agency. The IDOE began conducting audits following inquiries from WFYI. This week on Noon Edition, our hosts will talk about local news reporting focused on these two stories, which had policy impacts in Indiana.  You can follow us on X @WFIUWTIUNews or join us on the air by calling 812-855-0811 or toll-free at 1-877-285-9348. In this no-holds-barred episode of our podcast, SPJ and Tomb take on "The American Society of Magical Negroes," a film that's sparked controversy and disappointment in equal measure. From the cast and director urging audiences not to judge the movie by its trailer to the glaring absence of meaningful press in truly Black spaces, we dive deep into the heart of what makes or breaks a film's cultural and artistic integrity. The episode explores various facets of the critique: from disingenuous marketing efforts that echo broader issues of misrepresentation and tokenism, to the disappointment felt when legends defend the indefensible. We dissect the missteps of engaging with Black culture superficially, the irony of seeking revolutionary acclaim while trying to appease all, and the stark reality of a film failing to resonate with its intended audience or beyond. Join us as we unravel the complexities of expectations versus reality in filmmaking, the importance of authentic representation, and how "The American Society of Magical Negroes" serves as a cautionary tale of ambition falling short of its mark. This episode isn't just a critique; it's a call to action for more genuine storytelling and cultural respect.

Recent reports concerning the future of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) have stated, with one September post from NiemanLab saying that both membership and revenues are so low that the organization is set to "end the year $391,000 in the red," according to an audit prepared by an external accountant and dated August 2023. The same article by Sarah Scire featured the sub-head, "If we don't change our thinking, the next incoming president will be the last president.” That new president was sworn in at the October 1, 2023, annual convention in Las Vegas. She is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, journalism professor and associate dean for the Center for Media Design at the Santa Monica College, Ashanti Blaize-Hopkins. Hopkins also made history on that date as the first black woman ever to be elected to that post. Hopkins feels confident that the financial issues reported are not insurmountable, stating during this interview with E&P Publisher Mike Blinder, "I can firmly and unequivocally say that I will not be the last president of the SPJ. All of the journalism organizations across the country are facing financial situations. We have the benefit of having a foundation that was created to be in support of the society. That foundation has $12 million in the bank." She continued, "We are on our way to 'righting the ship,' and I can firmly say that will happen before the end of my term." Diversity within the SPJ and the journalism industry is another goal of Hopkin's. As quoted in the press release announcing her presidency, "I hesitated to join SPJ for several years because I just didn't see anyone who looked like me in leadership positions. It made me feel like I didn't belong in the organization. But I decided to be the change that I wanted to see in SPJ," she said. "Representation matters, and I hope to show through my leadership and diverse board of directors that there is a place for everyone at SPJ." In this episode of "E&P Reports," we go one-on-one with newly sworn-in Society of Professional Journalists President Ashanti Blaize-Hopkins to discuss how she plans to keep the organization prospering during a time of lagging membership and conference attendance, as well as her plans for SPJ's success. We also hear her views on the news media ecosystem as a whole and how we can define what is journalism in a world of disinformation and "fake news."

For over 15 years, Mickey H. Osterreicher has served as general counsel to the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), where he helps support, train and advocate for First Amendment rights. Starting his journalism career in the 1970s, Mickey was a staff photojournalist as an undergraduate for his campus newspaper at the University of Buffalo. He later became an award-winning photojournalist whose work has been published and broadcast over the years by the New York Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, ABC World News Tonight, Nightline, Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News and ESPN. Mickey returned to UB to get his law degree in 1998, where he served as an adjunct professor. However, not only does Osterreicher have an extensive news media background, but he also wears a shield — serving for over 30 years as a reserve deputy for the Erie County Sheriff's Office. He was recognized as their ‘Reserve Deputy of the Year' in 2017. The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) honored Osterreicher in 2015 as a “Fellow of the Society,” the highest professional honor given by the SPJ. And in 2021, he was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Today, most of Mickey's time revolves around training journalists and police officers about how to respect the 1st Amendment and generally get along better since both perform necessary work, usually in close proximity, especially during times of crime and crises.  In the recent May 2023 E&P Cover Story: “The shifting balances of press powers. While First Amendment champions work to affirm the free press, others seek to undermine it,” Osterreicher stated, “(Saying) ‘I know my rights' to a police officer today — whether you're covering a news event, or a demonstration or protest — is often the last sentence you say before they order you to turn around and put your hands behind your back." Mickey also shares the same concerns as many leaders in our industry about the blurred lines of defining who is a journalist in today's multiplatform, social media-driven news ecosystem. Osterreicher stated,  “When I was a journalist, it was pretty obvious. I was the noob with three Nikon SLRs around my neck, and nobody else had a camera. Or when I was in television, and I had a big Beta camera on my shoulder and press credentials,” he recalled. “Now, you've got young folks who are being sent out — whether they're reporters or photographers — with iPhones. They look the same as the protesters.” In this episode of “E&P Reports,” we go one-on-one with National Press Photographers Association (NPPA)'s general counsel, Mickey Osterreicher, to gain some advice on how both the news industry and the nation's law enforcement can work better together to respect the 1st Amendment, while each goes about their tough jobs during times of crime and crises. We also chat with him about his perspectives on helping define who a journalist is, especially now, as so many citizens are recording news on their personal devices.

Les Zaitz is a well-respected figure in the Oregon journalism world (and beyond, as we discuss), having spent decades working in the industry both as a reporter and, more recently, as a media entrepreneur. He is retiring from his post as the founding editor of the Oregon Capital Chronicle and will continue to lead two local publications, the Malheur Enterprise and the Salem Reporter. This was a fun episode--Les is funny, knowledgeable, and direct. We cover many aspects of journalism (local vs. national news, business models, the rise of "creators", whether the state should fund news, etc.), as well as the recent controversies involving the Enterprise and Rep. Greg Smith and some new ideas on closing the urban/rural divide.   Here is his bio, courtesy of the Chronicle:    "Les Zaitz is a veteran editor and investigative reporter, serving Oregon for more than 45 years. He reported for The Oregonian for 25 years and owns community newspapers and a digital news service. He is a national SPJ fellow, two-time Pulitzer finalist, including for a lengthy investigation of Mexican drug cartels in Oregon and five-time winner of Oregon's top investigative reporting award. He has investigated corrupt state legislators, phony charities, and an international cult that moved to Oregon, and the biggest bank failure in Oregon history. He also has been active in reforming the state's public records law and was appointed by the governor to the Oregon Public Records Advisory Council. In his spare time, he operates a ranch nestled in a national forest, feeding horses and assorted animals."   You can support Les' work at the Enterprise, the Reporter, and the (free!) Chronicle.
