Both news headlines and LGBT activists hailed the decision as a major step forward for same-sex rights in India. But in Mahesh Rao's new novel Half Light (Penguin Random House India, 2025), the court's deliberations sit in the background behind the budding relationship between Pavan, a hotel worker in Darjeeling, and Neville, a young, confident student. They meet first in Pavan's hotel in Darjeeling in 2014; after a tragic incident, they meet again four years later, in Mumbai in 2018. We're joined again by Prarthana Prakash as a guest host. Mahesh Rao grew up in Nairobi, Kenya. He has worked as a lawyer, academic researcher and bookseller in the UK. His debut novel The Smoke is Rising won the Tata First Book Award for fiction. His short fiction has been shortlisted for numerous awards. One Point Two Billion, his collection of short stories set across 13 Indian states, and Polite Society, a Delhi-set reimagining of Jane Austen's Emma, have both been published to critical acclaim. Recorded October 2nd, 2025. Thinking Aloud, Thinking Together is a new series of live and recorded conversations amplifying voices that have been silenced in Irish cultural life. It gives space to artists, writers and thinkers who offer radical new perspectives on existing narratives. Our first conversation takes the form of a podcast series. Entitled 'In the Half Light: Voices from Black Ireland', this podcast is delivered in partnership with the Museum of Literature Ireland and curated by Dr Phil Mullen (Assistant Professor of Black Studies at Trinity College Dublin and a leading researcher on the historical experiences of 'mixed-race' people growing up in Ireland). Using the audio format, Phil has created an anonymised, open space for 'mixed-race' people who grew up in Irish care institutions to explore the impact of their erasure from institutional abuse history and discourse in Ireland. Through this conversation, she aims to undo that erasure, one voice at a time. Phil will be in conversation with journalist and researcher Caelainn Hogan. The conversation will be chaired by writer Eoin McNamee. This event is organised in partnership with the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute and Trinity Research in Social Sciences. Speakers Dr Phil Mullen is Assistant Professor of Black Studies and located in the Department of Sociology. She teaches on the Trinity elective which introduces students to the epistemology of Black Studies as an intellectual pursuit. This is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary field of knowledge that interrogates historical events that have impacted on those who are racialised as Black, while centring the perspectives of Black people in constructing and deconstructing these events. Sheleads a research project to recover the lived experiences and sociological impact of African students who came to Trinity in the early 20th century, which amplifies our understanding of Blackness in pre-Celtic Tiger Ireland. Caelainn Hogan is a writer and journalist from Dublin. Her first book Republic of Shame investigates the ongoing legacy of Ireland's religious-run, state-funded institutions and the shame-industrial complex that incarcerated women and children. She has written for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, National Geographic, The Guardian, VICE, Harper's, The Washington Post, The Dublin Review and more. Eoin McNamee is a novelist and screenwriter. His nineteen novels include Resurrection Man and the Blue Trilogy. He has written six Young Adult novels including the New York Times bestselling The Navigator, and three thrillers under the John Creed pseudonym. He wrote the screenplay for the film Resurrection Man directed by Marc Evans and I Want You directed by Michael Winterbottom. It requires mental energy to develop the creative means to plan our re-entry into our proposed new world, and it takes physical energy to implement those changes around us. But, the biggest and most effect change is within us, in our minds and hearts. Work to calibrate and synchronize these with your new mission. Expend the mental energy so that the task of pushing through your boundaries is well rewarded. This session is your comforting pillow of that much needed mental reset. We at Spaceman's Transmissions propose that you set aside a quiet hour-ish of time to let everything go, and let the tapestry here guide you to the prairie of peaceful vibes. A place where you can assemble your collage of innovative endeavors which will bring your incrementally closer to where you view yourself. After a UFO sighting at the age of twelve in New Jersey prompted a deep exploration into a spectrum of paranormal phenomena, filmmaker Alan B. Smith set out to create a project that depicts these incidents of high strangeness through the stories of others. His documentary film HALF LIGHT illustrates these phenomena in a deep and mind twisting fashion, but this film is not just about the paranormal, as Alan explains, despite his initial intention to create a film covering aspects of anomalous events including UFOs and alien abduction, life after death, and even shadow beings, what came through was a deep and passionate connection with the spiritual aspect of the experiencers whom he interviews. HALF LIGHT features several prominent figures in the paranormal/UFO space including Marc D'Antonio, Ryan Sprague, Cheryl Costa and Race Hobbs. Today we welcome Rachel Noll James to discuss her latest film project INGRESS. Biography Rachel is an award winning screenwriter, actor and filmmaker with a focus on female driven films and bringing the female gaze to stories and genres traditionally dominated by a male perspective. Rachel grew up in Santa Fe, NM. She moved to Los Angeles to attend Occidental College, and went on to study and work in the LA area for over a decade. Rachel spent her first few years in LA working solely as an actor before she found herself getting increasingly restless waiting for other people to offer her work. So she started creating her own. Rachel's first feature was ‘Don't Pass Me By,' a film she wrote, produced, and starred in alongside Hollywood veterans Keith David, C. Thomas Howell and Sean Stone. Rachel won Best Feature Writer at the LA Femme Festival for the script, and the film was released worldwide in February of 2014. Soon after, Rachel produced and co-wrote the feature film ‘The Storyteller' which won the Silver Prize in the Family Film category in the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards and was released on Hallmark Movies Now after winning multiple awards in the festival circuit. Additional credits include the multiple award-winning short film ‘Paramnesia' that was released as part of acclaimed horror collective Fun Size Horror Volume 1, the short film ‘Half Light' that landed Rachel as a quarter finalist in the NextTV directing talent search and was released exclusively through Seed&Spark, and the short ‘Follow The River' that won Rachel honorable mention in the Port Orchard Film Festival. Rachel is currently in post-production for her next feature film, ‘Ingress' which Rachel wrote and directed.  Slated for completion in 2022. Rachel is a member of Northwest Film Forum, Women in Film Seattle and a co-founder of the female-focused production company Emergence Films.
