Our edited track from 1979 by Earthstar is taken from the album ‘French Skylines,' produced by Klaus Schulze. As usual, we always like to give the female side exposure, with Brooklyn-based composer and producer Rachika Nayar, who has transitioned from the ghostly netherworlds of her debut to a vivid fluorescent cinematic maximalism, and Nadia Struiwigh, who echoes a free-spirited approach of electronic music in the mid-eighties, giving emotionally-charged ambience. Today we welcome Rachel Noll James to discuss her latest film project INGRESS. Biography Rachel is an award winning screenwriter, actor and filmmaker with a focus on female driven films and bringing the female gaze to stories and genres traditionally dominated by a male perspective. Rachel grew up in Santa Fe, NM. She moved to Los Angeles to attend Occidental College, and went on to study and work in the LA area for over a decade. Rachel spent her first few years in LA working solely as an actor before she found herself getting increasingly restless waiting for other people to offer her work. So she started creating her own. Rachel's first feature was ‘Don't Pass Me By,' a film she wrote, produced, and starred in alongside Hollywood veterans Keith David, C. Thomas Howell and Sean Stone. Rachel won Best Feature Writer at the LA Femme Festival for the script, and the film was released worldwide in February of 2014. Soon after, Rachel produced and co-wrote the feature film ‘The Storyteller' which won the Silver Prize in the Family Film category in the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards and was released on Hallmark Movies Now after winning multiple awards in the festival circuit. Additional credits include the multiple award-winning short film ‘Paramnesia' that was released as part of acclaimed horror collective Fun Size Horror Volume 1, the short film ‘Half Light' that landed Rachel as a quarter finalist in the NextTV directing talent search and was released exclusively through Seed&Spark, and the short ‘Follow The River' that won Rachel honorable mention in the Port Orchard Film Festival. Today’s Talkhouse podcast started with a little bit of serendipity in the form of album release dates: Both of our guests, Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast and producer/musician/former Vampire Weekend guy Rostam, have excellent records coming out on June 4. They’re also fans of each other’s work, so we figured it made plenty of sense to put them together. Zauner’s album, her third under the Japanese Breakfast name, is called Jubilee, and as you’ll hear in this conversation, it took a deliberate turn toward slightly happier themes than her first two. It comes hot on the heels of Zauner’s first book, a heartbreaking memoir called Crying In H Mart, that deals with her mother’s death—also a theme in her early music—and food, lots of food. It’s a really touching read, and an ideal companion to her musical catalog, which grew in really compelling ways with Jubilee. Rostam is best known as a founding member of Vampire Weekend, and even though he officially left the band a few years ago, he still contributes some songwriting and production work. He’s kept plenty busy otherwise, producing records and writing songs with an incredible array of other artists, from Hamilton Leithauser to HAIM to Clairo. His first proper solo album is the gentle, string-filled, fantastic Half-Light, which came out in 2017, and now he’s releasing Changephobia, which as you’ll hear ditches the string section and brings in a sax, among other things. These two jump right into a conversation that flits around from silly to deep: On one hand, they talk about childhood loves of chess and fencing and the importance of song five on an album. On the other, Zauner gets rightfully annoyed at interview questions she gets that other people don’t, and Rostam talks about being Persian in a band that was sometimes pegged as particularly white. Shelter Distilling is right in the center of the Village in Mammoth Lakes, a couple hundred yards away from the Village Gondola. It's owned by Matt Hammer, Karl Anderson and Jason Senior, who's also the head brewer. They brew beer and distill various craft spirits there on the premises, and they have a full menu of great food and cocktails. Both their beers and their spirits are incredible. I got to try a few of each: for beers, the Festbier, the Foggy Goggles hazy IPA, the I'm Your Huckleberry cider, and the Alpha double IPA; for spirits, the High Sierra and Dark Sky single malt whiskeys, and the Little Green Monster absinthe.Thanks to Karl and Jason for pouring drinks and taking time to hang out. This was super enjoyable for me because I discovered a couple new favorites and got to talk about Mammoth and the Eastern Sierra, plus got to know a couple good local guys whom I had never had the chance to meet before. Rostam, Santigold, Dijon and Samantha Urbani discuss whether melody or lyrics come first, how to avoid the temptation to go back to tracks to make alterations, and how naming an album is the last bit of personality you can sprinkle on a project. Rostam is a Grammy-winning producer, composer, musician, and founding member of the band Vampire Weekend, producing their first three albums. Now a solo artist, he released his debut album Half-Light in 2017, and went on to produce Haim’s Women in Music Pt. III LP, as well as working with the likes of Frank Ocean, Solange, and Carly Rae Jepsen. Joining him is singer, songwriter and producer Santi White, aka Santigold. She’s released three albums to date, and draws influences ranging from 1980s pop and rock to new age hip-hop. Dijon is an artist whose reflective, folk-inspired R&B has drawn comparisons to Frank Ocean and Nick Hakim. He began producing music as part of the duo Abhi//Dijon whilst in college before establishing himself as a solo artist. And finally, Samantha Urbani is an artist, filmmaker, and songwriter who formed the influential DIY indie band Friends. She then moved to LA, where she lent her skills to collaborators including Dev Hynes, Nite Jewel and Zoe Kravitz.

Portland, Maine writer Monica Wood, whose second play “The Half-Light” premiered last week at Portland Stage, talked about her writing process, her mutually supportive marriage and the importance of teaching the arts, among other things, in front of a sold-out audience Tuesday at One Longfellow Square in Portland. Portland Press Herald arts reporter Bob Keyes interviewed Wood on stage for the latest installment of MaineVoices Live, a series put on by the newspaper.  Wood, who grew up in the western Maine mill town of Mexico and now lives in Portland, is the author of beloved memoir “When We Were the Kennedys” and the novel “The One-in-a-Million Boy.” Her first play, “Papermaker,” was the best-selling play in the history of Portland Stage.

Rostam Batmanglij is a songwriter, producer, and composer, who first rose to prominence in 2006 as one of the members of Vampire Weekend. He’s produced songs for Frank Ocean, Solange, Carly Rae Jepsen, and more. But his September 2017 album ‘Half-Light’ is his first as a solo artist. Frank Bidart reads from his work on April 23rd, 2015 in honor of National Poetry Month. The first poems are from Metaphysical Dog (Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013). Bidart finished by reading a few lyric poems from his forthcoming collection Half-light: Collected Poems 1965-2016 (FSG 2016). This talk was held at Wellesley College's Tau Zeta Epsilon society house, and was sponsered by the Wellesley College English Department, The Wellesley Review, Tau Zeta Epsilon, and Zeta Alpha.
