This one is for all you baseball fans. Josh Kantor is a former Chicago resident and current organist for the Boston Red Sox. CHIRP DJ and Features contributor Mike Nikolich caught up with Josh to talk about the saga that resulted in him becoming the owner of Nacy Faust's organ, an instrument that she used to delight White Sox fans for many many years. The story starts with an auction and culminates in a cross-country tour featuring Kelly Hogan of the Decemberists, Max Crawford of Poi Dog Pondering and Robbie Fulks player Gerald Dowd. Also in this interview, Mike and Josh cover Josh's work with Hot Stove Cool Music and his many rock band side projects. "Keep the repertoire current, keep updating, keep learning the new pop songs, it's more work than just kind of sticking to what you already know. But it's well worth it." - Josh Kantor Produced by Mike Nikolich Image: Adam Glanzman

Dave Edmunds, It'll Be MeThe Youngers, MemphisThe Youngers, Willie MccoyThe Kokomo Kings, No Dinner TonightThe Kokomo Kings, A Drive-By Love AffairThe Kernal, Green, Green SkyThe Kernal, The LimitThe Lonely Dogs, Teenage KicksThe Lonely Dogs, R'n'r Is Back In TownThe Split Squad, Hey DjThe Split Squad, Another CinderellaUnderwater Sunshine, It's YouUnderwater Sunshine, Listen To ReasonNRBQ, I Like Her So MuchNRBQ, Miss Goody Two ShoesWhen Rivers Meet, Never Coming Home

Welcome to the Says Who Good Times Fun Hour, which is what we're calling it this week as everything is A Lot and people are starting to get a bit crispy around the edges. So let's keep it light and fun! Let's talk about Rudy Giuliani eating soup! Because he does not eat it like other people. He eats it Rudy Style. And it's gross! You won't like it.Also, let's talk about medicine for horsies, because it 2021, and people take that now. And then they get a case of the Rudys. It all comes back to Rudy in the end! Seriously, though, people are taking a lot of horse medicine. And Maureen got a pair of roller skates.Saddle up, SaysWhovia! Let the fun times begin!Note: the organ music at the top of the episode is courtesy of Josh Kantor.
You may know him as the organist for the Boston Red Sox, or as a keyboard player for bands such as The Split Squad and Jim's Big Ego, or for his live-streaming show "7th-Inning Stretch", or from his work at a small school referred to locally as Harvard University. This Boston icon is a very busy man and we are very excited that he took the time to hang out for bit and share some fantastic stories and unique experiences. Come on in and join us for a great hang with a damn fine human being.
Boston Red Sox organist Josh Kantor returns to talk to the boys about how kept his iron man streak alive during 2020's work stoppage, breaks down an average game day, shares where he stands on Sweet Caroline, comments on J-Lo's "wattage" and, for some reason, the best and worst Batman.
James sits down with Centro-Matic/South San Gabriel/Monsters of Folk's Will Johnson and Fenway Park organist/Baseball Project member Josh Kantor to try to recreate - virtually - their annual brunch during South By Southwest. We talk music, handling a pandemic, baseball, being a fan of a cheating team, and more!
Pete Mummert does not hold back on the hard-to-answer questions today. What did the leage mean to Dottie? Were we supposed to know Helen Haley was a doctor? How is adult Stillwell Angel handling all this? Why is Kit so late to the reunion? But, as you would expect from Indiana Jones Minute's carbonite fever dream expert, he also brings some great possible answers. Tune in to hear all this and more, including real players, reunions, and real players' reunions on screen. (Also, please note this is not actually the last episode. Rockford has made it to the World Series and James Anderson has made it to our podcast. Everyone is here in Racine for Game 7 from Doris's dad to Dottie Hinson—hey wait a minute! That's right: Dottie is back and she is in full Terminator mode. We have so much to cover today from real on-screen injuries to the unfairness of Alice being benched, from Mae taking her place as leader to whether Kit ever went home again. Bob, bears, betrayal, Stillwell, signal ignoring, steak dinners, cut off men, and finally that infamous collision! James, Rachel, and Tierney debate how this movie could have ended and enjoy our last moments of the film in 1943. Erica Ayala writes about women in sports, studies leadership roles, and played Division One softball—which is to say that we're lucky to have her on today to talk about A League of Their Own. Together we analyze the different roles (and all their associated expectations) that these players faced, and we develop some headcannon about Bob. As a former catcher, Erica brings expert insight into Dottie Hinson, but she also sees right into Kit Keller's motivations as well. Doug Greenberg takes a break from his show Rocky Minute to talk about a different sports movie today. A former catcher, he brings special insight into Jimmy's speech about what makes baseball great. Doug, Rachel, and Tierney all confront their mortality and it isn't even in relation to the telegram scene! Tracy Reiner breaks all our hearts, Tom Hanks is very good, and Tierney loves Bill Pullman. All this and gas rationing trivia as well. Kit and Doris fight, Kit and Dottie fight… are you noticing a pattern here? Today Paul Francis Sullivan (host of Locked on MLB and Bull Durham Minute) joins the show to talk about bench-clearing brawls and the importance of Penny Marshall to baseball. But he's also here to bestow the nickname Jar Jar Kit on a certain actress! And all this without one of the most controversial deleted scenes of the movie. Are you getting too big to finish your own podcast episodes? Because here in the 6th inning, we are being traded to Racine. Dottie Hinson has questionable bunting strategy, but helps the League by scoring a Life magazine cover. Jimmy Dugan chastises Evelyn too vehemently, but also grows into his role as Manager. Kit Keller is dissed by Ira, but has the coolest outfit on the bus. And Marla gets married! It's a busy inning here and we have TWO guests to help us understand it all. Rachel and Tierney are joined today by Mike Carlucci and Jarf Harden, so grab some of that Heinz red magic, steal a hot dog from the stands, and let's dive in!Music by Josh Kantor (@jtkantor on Twitter)“Let's Go Padres” song found hereSpecial thanks to Tom Taylor (@TomTaylorWriter on Twitter)We're on social media under our parent podcast series @vcrprivileges. Play ball all day and dance all night! Today Sean German of The Next Scene Podcast joins us to watch as Evelyn asks to bring her son on the road with the Peaches and to witness the arrival of “Stillwell Angel”. He helps us analyze what's probably the worst day of Miss Cuthbert's life. Then (33:57) it's a Spinal Tap Minute reunion as Heidi Bennett joins us to watch the Peaches dance the night away. Chris and Jeff of The Jay and Silent Bob Minute podcast join the team to watch the very first game of the AAGPBL. Welcome Jimmy Dugan! Oh, gross, Jimmy Dugan! Our Peaches stand up to hecklers and doubters (including their own coach) as they bond on the ballfield. Can the players overcome the inherent sexism of their society? Can our hosts and guests handle how gross stadium mens' bathrooms are? Time to find out so sit back, have a laugh with today's newsreel, and enjoy a cup of Helen's coffee as we start the 3rd inning!Music by Josh Kantor (@jtkantor on Twitter)Special thanks to Benjamin FrankartWe're on social media under our parent podcast series @vcrprivileges. Alex Robinson of Star Wars Minute joins the team to talk about the movie A League of Their Own, covering from the arrival of our gang at tryouts on Wrigley Field to the hiring of Jimmy Dugan. We meet so many wonderful characters: Mae and Doris in all their New York glory, Shirley “Indictment of the Educational System” Baker, and even young Tea Leoni. They may have to play baseball in skirts, but isn't it worth it when you realize Tom Hanks is a peeeeeeeeach!? What's at Stake for Congress During the Pandemic (0:31)Guest: James Curry, PhD, Professor of Political Science, University of UtahCongress is trying to pass another stimulus bill this week allocating more money for loans to small businesses suffering in the pandemic. But both the House and Senate are operating with a skeleton crew in Washington. Most members of Congress are back in their home districts trying to keep constituents happy and preparing their re-election campaigns. Lessons From a Former Secret Service Agent (16:56)Guest: Evy Poumpouras, Former Secret Service Agent and Author of Becoming BulletproofAnywhere the president goes, they go. You see them standing stone-faced in dark suits and ties, sometimes talking into their sleeve cuffs. The US Secret Service are iconic. They're also mostly male. But Evy Poumpouras had the job for 12 years. She protected President Clinton, both Presidents Bush and President Obama, plus members of their families. She also worked as an interrogator for the intelligence arm of the Secret Service. Her new book is part-memoir, part-instruction manual. It's called “Becoming Bulletproof.” Taking Pictures for Social Media Makes an Experience Less Enjoyable (38:06)Guest: Alixandra Barasch, Professor of Marketing, New York UniversityIn these days when museums and national parks and travel destinations are closed, social media feeds are filled with images that are closer to home. Why are snapping that pic of your pet, your kid, your dinner? Is it to share with a loved one? Or because it'll look great on your Instagram feed? Or just because you want to remember the moment? Why Sometimes We Just Don't Want to Know the Truth (50:39)Guest: David Hagmann, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. This last month, I have intentionally avoided looking at how my retirement funds are doing. If I don't look, I don't have to feel bummed out by the big losses, even though knowing the truth might help me make better investment decisions. “Active ignorance” is what Harvard researcher David Hagmann calls this. And it's pretty common – though what kinds of information we choose to avoid differs from person to person. Learn to Make Sourdough From a Starter and Help Solve a Scientific Mystery (1:03:35)Guest: Rob Dunn, Professor of Ecology and Evolution and Director of the Public Science Lab, NC State University; Co-Founder of the Wild Sourdough ProjectThe pandemic has spawned a new fascination with bread making – maybe because bakeries are closed? Or because people are stuck at home with time on their hands? At any rate, yeast sold out in stores right along with toilet paper and Purell. But you don't need to buy yeast. With flour, water and patience, you can cultivate the microbes that cause bread to rise. It's called a sourdough starter and exactly how is works is a scientific mystery that the Public Science Lab at North Carolina State University is trying to solve. They're asking people to document their sourdough starters and submit the data to the Wild Sourdough project. 7th Inning Stretch Continues Without Baseball (1:19:58)Guest: Josh Kantor, Boston Red Sox OrganistToday the Boston Red Sox were supposed to be hosting the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park and Josh Kantor was supposed to be at the stadium organ, where he's been for every Red Sox game since 2003. But none of that is happening right now because of the pandemic. So Kantor has started hosting daily concerts from his home, live on Facebook: taking requests from fans on Twitter as he's done for years.
James Curry of Univ of Utah on Congress in the pandemic. Evy Poumpouras, former Secret Service Agent, on "Becoming Bulletproof." Alixandra Barasch of New York Univ on the Instagram effect. David Hagmann of Harvard Univ on truth or ignorance. Rob Dunn of NC State Univ on sourdough mystery. Josh Kantor, Boston Red Sox Organist, on 7th inning concerts.

The Fenway Park organist, Josh Kantor, went on a Twitter rant about us using a YouTube clip of one of his tunes for our intro. This clip has been in our podcast since 2015. How many times has he reached out to us about pulling this song? Zero times. Is Josh Kantor a clown? Yes, and we discuss this madness at length on today's show. We also talk how Dustin Pedroia's impact on this year's team could be bigger than you think, if now was the right time for Alex Cora to call out E-Rod, a random recap of the madness of 2011's Game 162 sparked by a sit-down Jared recently had with Evan Longoria, your Down in the DM questions and much more. Enjoy!
We are taking a little detour from our usual format to bring you this very special episode. We hosted a conversation between the illustrious sports reporters Gordon Edes and Steve Buckley with arguably the most well know Presidential Historian in the world - Doris Kearns Goodwin. With the 2018 Red Sox World Series Trophy in the room, we talked, sang and celebrated Red Sox Baseball while raising money for the amazing Pete Frates Family Foundation. We would bet that most of you listening either participated in or at least heard of the Ice Bucket challenge. Started by Pete Frates who was struck with ALS a few years ago, with his parents John and Nancy and the millions of people who took part in the challenge, the foundation has raised a ¼ of a billion dollars to fight ALS, which is just astounding. We were truly honored to have John and Nancy Frates join us on that Sunday evening to say a few words as well as Red Sox great Sam Horn, Red Sox Poet Laureate Dick Flavin and the Sox Fenway Park organist Josh Kantor. It was a special night, made all the more wonderful not only by the money raised but the gathering of friends and family.

For more than 40 seasons, Nancy Faust was the organist for the Chicago White Sox, so when her Hammond Elegante Model 340100 went up for auction, Boston Red Sox organist Josh Kantor knew he had to have it. There was just one catch...he had to pick it up in person.

Well that escalated quickly. Maureen and Dan play catch up with the events surrounding the sudden firing of FBI Director James Comey. Sure, he didn't do well by Clinton's emails, but all indications are he was leading pretty deep investigations into all this Trump Russia stuff. Aaand, now he's not. That's convenient. Oh, and the Russia stuff? Now they're in the Oval Office too. Sure, why not. We also learn about Trump's dessert preferences, what he likes on his salad (surprisingly, not Russian Dressing), and Maureen begins to build a Stranger Things-inspired Spicer Light Wall to get readings from the Sean Spicer stuck in the upside down. There's a lot of smoke, there's a lot of fire, there's a lot of truth and a lot of fiction too. To help them wrap their heads around it all, Maureen and Dan are joined by Mother Jones' Editor in Chief Clara Jeffery as well. SHOW NOTES: Clara Jeffery is the Editor-in-Chief of Mother Jones, whose coverage of Trump, Russia, and the repercussions of the election has been phenomenal. Support journalism! The pecan pie Dan references is from the Carmeilla Grill in New Orleans. Go. You will not be disappointed. The Watergate book Maureen has been listening to (after she finished All the President's Men) is [Washington Journal: Reporting Watergate and Richard Nixon's Downfall](Washington Journal: Reporting Watergate and Richard Nixon's Downfall ) by Elizabeth Drew. The organ music you hear on this (and other) episodes is performed by Josh Kantor, who in addition to being the official organist of Says Who moonlights as the official organist of the Boston Red Sox. You can hear him play at every home game this year. Your Intrepid Hosts: Maureen Johnson and Dan Sinker Our awesome theme is courtesy of Ted Leo. Says Who's Logo was made by the one and only Darth
