Continuing non-metal September, the boys remain firmly rooted in the year 1993 for this week's album, the classic So Tonight That I Might See by Mazzy Star.
This week, we welcome one of our favorite musicians to the show: Mark Lightcap of Acetone and the Dick Slessig Combo. Back in 2017, author Sam Sweet released a great book about Acetone called Hadley Lee Lightcap, accompanied by a stellar Light in the Attic anthology compilation,1992-2001. Writing about it, Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury said: Though Acetone were label-mates with the Verve at Virgin subsidiary Vernon Yard, recorded for Neil Young's Vapor Records, and attracted high-profile fans like J. Spaceman and Hope Sandoval, nothing about 1992-2001 indicates a band bound for the spotlight. The trio's music, a heady mix of surf, country, exotica, hillbilly spirituals, and slow-motion indie rock, pulled from thrift store LPs and adhered to its own logic. Hadley, Lightcap, and Lee listened to music deeply, searching for elements beneath the surface. The band uncovered psychedelic qualities in unlikely places, turning up lysergic textures in mood music, Tiki kitsch, and Charlie Rich records. Coupled with the foundational influences of the Velvet Underground, Brian Eno, Steve Reich, and Al Green, this strange blend takes time to reveal itself. Acetone's music requires patience. Lee's voice seems to float out of the speakers, his bass locked into meandering grooves with Hadley's meditative drums and Lightcap's tremolo and reverb-drenched guitar. Like its contemporaries, Low, Souled American, and Mercury Rev, Acetone created music that deconstructed and protracted rock & roll templates. We've kept on the Lightcap beat ever since. Back in the early days of the pandemic, we covered his other band, the Dick Slessig Combo, and their mystic, mantric 40+ minute version of Glen Campbell's “Wichita Lineman." Last year, New West Records reissued Acetone's discography, featuring illuminating liner notes by J. Spaceman of Spiritualized/Spaceman 3 and Drew Daniel of Matmos/The Soft Pink Truth. The occasion prompted a great conversation with Mark that we published in written form last year. This week on the show, he joins us for a loose talk from his backyard in LA. From “beautiful music” to his run-ins with Oasis, this conversation takes plenty of fascinating turns. There's plenty to read about Acetone and Dick Slessig over at Aquarium Drunkard. This week the Vietnamese photographer and author Ngoc Minh Ngo. Ngoc was born in Vietnam in 1963 and grew up during the Vietnam War. Her father, Chau Minh Ngo, was a colonel in the South Vietnam Army and her mother Phi Truong became a nurse's aide after raising eight children. Ngoc was the sixth child—she has four sisters and three brothers. Despite enduring a brutal war, Ngoc describes her childhood as enchanting and beautiful. Her parents did all they could to protect their family and offer some normalcy to those troubling times by spending time on the beach. At the age of 12, shortly before the end of the war in 1975, the family were evacuated to the US and settled in Sacramento, California where, with the help of sponsors, they began a new life. Ngoc described herself as a very shy and reserved child but that did not hinder her development. She found her own way to the University of California, Berkeley where she earned a BA followed by a Masters of Landscape Design at Columbia University. After spending some time traveling to Japan and Europe Ngoc made her way to New York with a view to working in painting restoration. But after a chance encounter while working on a feature film she discovered her true passion was to be photography, so she learned black & white photography and developing. Ngoc's images have been published The World of Interiors, T Magazine, Vogue, Architectural Digest, Cabana, and House & Garden UK. She is also the author of five books: Bringing Nature Home: Floral Arrangements Inspired by Nature; In Bloom: Creating and Living with Flowers, and Eden Revisited: A Garden in Northern Morocco, The House of a Lifetime, and New York Green. She is currently working on a new book entitled Roses in the Garden inspired by her father's death. She has, she says, always been independent and self-contained, paving her own way as a refugee and re-imaging her life as a reflection through the beauty of the images she creates. Ngoc and her husband, the photographer Julian Wass, live in New York. They have a daughter Lily who works in public health and is also a poet. We've all heard the saying that comparison is the thief of joy. But have you ever thought about how many different areas of our lives it applies to? We can spend so much of our time worrying that we aren't keeping up or meeting some unspoken expectations. So how do we learn to run our own race? In this episode, Petra Bagust talks to two wonderful guests (who are also good friends in real life), counsellor Charlotte Cummings and Baptist Pastor James Beck. Somewhere between Beth Gibbons, Billie Holiday, and Hope Sandoval lies the voice of NYC-based School Night alum Odetta Hartman — well, at least she does on “Dr. No,” a transformative re-working of “Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child,” originally made famous by her iconic namesake Odetta. But check out the rest of her album, Swansongs, which will feature a range of sound when it drops on March 22.
This week Oliver looks at legendary 90s soft indie rockers Mazzy Star. On this episode of the Dance Cry Dance Break, “The Source,” written by Josh Hanson, inspired by Apparition, a song by Jessie Marks.Dream-folk pianist and singer-songwriter Jessie Marks grew up in the Bay Area. Born in Marin, yet having spent her life almost everywhere between Berkeley and Santa Cruz, and nurtured by the rugged seaboard of Big Sur, it's certain that the Central California Coast is her true blood line. The sea is her biographer, and it's evident in the fluidity and oceanic nature of her compositions. Influenced by the female artists Cat Power, Fiona Apple and Hope Sandoval, Jessie's music takes her audiences on a journey that is both intimately personal and transcendent.Bandcamp Spotify Instagram WebsiteJosh Hanson lives in northern Wyoming where he teaches, writes, and makes up little songs. He is a graduate of the University of Montana MFA program, and his work has appeared or is forthcoming in Sinister Smile Press, BlackPetals, Fast Flesh, Stoneboat, and Diagram. Blog Twitter FacebookThe SourceBy Josh HansonThey'd moved at least once a year. Furnished houses filled with anonymous furniture, or sometimes hollow, empty rooms that they would half-heartedly fill with a mattress on the floor and a pressboard chest of drawers. All things that would be left behind with only a water ring on the top or a black scuff along the base to show that they had belonged to anyone, had seen use. This new place was nice, a low, ranch-style house under tall trees, with a wide, fenced yard. Plenty of room for him and his brother to play. But beyond the fence was a stand of trees that led further back into the hills, into a maze of old concrete foundations and rusted girders and the frames of old machinery whose purpose they could not even imagine. It was here that they found the first of the bones. It was in the loose gravel hemmed in by the remains of a ruined foundation, and the boys had been using the space as a kind of no man's land, scrabbling over the crumbling walls and belly-crawling across the gravel amongst the hail of imaginary gunfire and shrapnel, fingers digging down into the dusty rock, where he uncovered that circle of bright bone. There had been no moment of confusion, no mistaking it for something else. It was so clearly the crown of a skull, off-white with the sutures along the crown clearly marked with dirt. He called to his brother, and by lunchtime, they had uncovered most of the skeleton, the rib cage collapsed and lying in a thousand tiny pieces, but the long bones all whole and almost fully articulated. They stood over the bones and looked down, both of them quiet for a long moment. Who were they? How long had they rested here beneath the gravel and dust? It was as if someone had simply laid down in the center of the floor and gone to sleep, waiting and waiting--how many years the boys could not imagine--for someone to uncover them. He got down on his knees and began to shovel with both hands in the dirt. Somehow he knew there were more. He could almost hear them humming below the surface. They'd waited so long.Within minutes, he'd uncovered the fine bones of a hand, and calling his brother over, the two boys began to clear the ground. Both boys worked in quiet, their faces white with dust and streaked with sweat. The next morning, at the excavation site, the bones shone bright in the morning sun. Three figures laying rigid in their beds, chests collapsed, staring upward. They were about to get down in the gravel and move away more rock and dirt, when he heard something off to his left. He straightened and looked deeper into the trees, back where the rusted frames of machinery were half-hidden by weeds and the ground sloped slightly upward toward the hillside. He watched and listened. Nothing. There it was again. He moved off, leaving his brother playing in the dirt, up, toward the direction of the sound. Almost a voice. He passed through the shadow of the trees, emerging in the next clearing, the chalky red brick of an old foundation off to his left, thin trees growing up where once the building had stood. He cocked his head to the side, strained his hearing. Strained for that humming feel. He began to dig.It took hours before he found something. This time it was the long bone of a leg, very white against the dark clay that made up this part of the slope. Deeper than the others. Following the legs up to the pelvis, he soon realized that the roots of a tree were caught up with the bones, snaking through the ribs. He dug away the dirt from around the roots as well, and by early afternoon the whole skeleton was visible, the tree growing spindly and straight, rising from the ruined chest, so alien there among the bones, and he heard the hum. It was behind him, further up the slope. He followed the path up and around, away from the excavated bones, away from the house, away from the afternoon sun. He walked on until the hillside rose in a sheer cliff-face of deep red rock. He looked up, and the cliff rose out of sight above him. Scrub trees grew at the base of the cliff, and there were chunks of brick here, too, running right up into the cliff face. He followed the line of crumbling brick, just barely breaking the surface, pushing away the brush and high grass. And there was the door. Wider than it was high, maybe three feet across, with a brick archway set in the hillside. The door itself was made of thick timbers that appeared to have been nailed up from inside what he imagined must be a tunnel. He squatted down before the doorway, pressed a hand to the wooden planks. Cold. Solid. He felt the hum in his hand. It was inside, the source of that sound. Deep within the mountain. He imagined it, grub-white and hulking, rubbing itself up again the other side of the door, only inches from his raised hand. It was ancient, timeless, and patient as the earth itself. It sank bones into the ground and raised up saplings from the graves. It was calling to him, and it knew his name, had always known his name, had been waiting. How long? Forever. He crouched down, kicked sideways. The wood crumbled more than it cracked, and he pushed it away from the opening, hearing the pieces drop hollowly into the passage within. The sound was unmistakably his own name. So soft. He gripped the edges of the doorway and slid forward, feet first, and dropped down, into the cool belly of the mountain, into the comforting hum of that eternal source, and he followed it blindly down, into the dark. It might be the best a tambourine has ever sounded on a song…it just sparkles. “Fade Into You,” Mazzy Star's mid-90's MTV classic is the rare one hit wonder that transcends time and place. The song is such a warm blanket of sound that it was featured on countless mix tapes in the 90's, then placed prominently on every mix CD made by a sensitive guy in the early 2000's, and still lives on an immeasurable number of streaming playlists. (T)his song exists kind of out of time. It could have come out a couple years ago, or it could have come out in the 70s or the 90s. In the latest episode of One Hit History, Sloane Spencer sits down with musician M. Lockwood Porter to discuss a song that arose from the tail end of the Los Angeles music scene known as the Paisley Underground. Mazzy Star is fronted by the tantalizing wallflower Hope Sandoval and though the song was everywhere in 1994, neither Spencer nor Porter became familiar with the hit until years later. Porter shares details about his forthcoming fifth LP, which includes contributions from John Moreland. One of the things that makes this band so tantalizing is that my understanding is that Hope Sandoval is very shy and has stage fright…it just adds some mystery and depth to what you hear in the music. Well, we're using the term hit really loosely, and we're using the term favorite pretty loosely. And we've come across some incredible songs got a wonderful guest with us today, Mr. Lockwood Porter, a number of fantastic records that you can check out at his website am Lockwood porter.com, or, of course, our favorite band camp at a fifth album on the way in 2022. Want to hear more about that? Hello. M Lockwood Porter 0:35 Hi, how are you doing? Sloane Spencer 0:36 I'm great. How are you doing? Great. What's up with this next record? M Lockwood Porter 0:40 You know, it's becoming a little bit of a cliche at this point. But it's one of those lockdown records. Like so many other musicians, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands over the last year and a half, two years or so. And yeah, so for this one, you know, I just did a lot of recording at home, which I hadn't really done very much before on my previous records. You know, it was usually three live in the studio with a band but this one, I rushed up on my engineering skills and I bought some microphones and working on songs throu...

“The Ghosts” Kira Roessler, who was just known back in the '80s as KIRA, was the bassist for the legendary Black Flag from '84 to '86. A ferocious outfit that played a physical and fiery brand of blistering and punishing punk rock, Kira was no stranger to getting in the van and tearing from town to town with her bandmates. After leaving Black Flag, the UCLA educated Roessler who had also played with DC3, the Monsters, the Visitors and Twisted Roots, formed the bass-led duo Dos with her husband Mike Watt. Dos put out a couple of great albums and then Roessler retreated a bit from music and focused on her day job as dialog editor in the film industry. With a few Emmys under her belt and contributing to two Academy Award- winning films, Kira has done dialog editing on Game of Thrones, Joker, Mad Max Fury Road and A Star is Born. Her debut self-titled solo album is an intricate and instrumentally complex album. With vocals that bring to mind a blend of Kim Deal and Hope Sandoval and bass-fueled arrangements that provide a perfect foundation for the compositions, KIRA is a moving and stirring debut. In this chat, Kira talks to Alex about carving out time for the creative process, the power of musical minimalism and memories of d. Boon. https://kittenrobot.com/records www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com Stereo Embers Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
We had the pleasure of interviewing Highland Kites over Zoom video! Highland Kites started as Los Angeles native Marissa Lamar's solo project, and was a way for her to deal with the aftermath of her beating a severe case of neurologic Lyme Disease, losing much of her earlier life in the process. Music was a way to deal with not just the pain, but to help her heal and find a new purpose. Having never played or sung she started learning piano in 2014 at 26 and within 6 months played her first show. What started as just something to help her mind heal and give her an artistic outlet became an obsession and something she fell deeply in love with. She shortly after met drummer, Neil Briggs through a mutual friend. Their musical styles were very different but the contrast created a sound that they both resonated with. They have since released 4 EPs, a full length album and many singles, done 6 tours and over 100 shows. Their music has been described as “Hope Sandoval fronting Radiohead”. They have a love for adding texture to songs, and creating dreamy landscapes around brutally honest and direct lyrics. We want to hear from you! Vinyl LP Records - - - The history - - A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), often simply called a record, was an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. Because the records were made of polyvinyl chloride they took on the name “VINYL”. In the mid-2000s, gradually, records made of any material began to be called vinyl records, or simply vinyl. The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. - - - The details - - The LP record (from "long playing" or "long play") is a phonograph record format characterized by a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm, having a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter, and uses the "microgroove" groove specification. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. The new product was a 12- or 10-inch (30 or 25 cm) fine-grooved disc made of PVC ("vinyl") and played with a smaller-tipped "microgroove" stylus at a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm. Each side of a 12-inch LP could play for about 22 minutes. The average LP has about 1,500 feet (460 m; 0.28 mi) of groove on each side. The average tangential needle speed relative to the disc surface is approximately 1 mile per hour (1.6 km/h; 0.45 m/s). It travels fastest on the outside edge. - - - It is one, long, groove - filled with music. But, in reality, it is “Just A Groove”, an album oriented groove. Největší inspirací pro Amelii Sibu je v poslední době kapela Mazzy Star: „Je to strašně hezké, takové písničkářské a hodně křehké.“ Uskupení vzniklo na přelomu 80. a 90. let v Kalifornii okolo dua tvořeného Hope Sandoval a Davidem Robackem. V posledních letech začala být kapela opět populární.
Happy 2020! I got married in 2019 which was pretty incredible, but otherwise the year was mighty rough in all sorts of ways for all sorts of people. MENÚ: Okolona River Bottom Band (Bobbie Gentry vs Norah Jones) / Big Boss Man (Hope Sandoval) / Reunion (Bobbie Gentry) / Parchman Farm (Carice Van Houten) / Mornin' Glory (Laetitia Sadier) / Sermon (Bobbie Gentry -demo- vs Margo Price) / Tobacco Road (Susanne Sundfør) / Penduli Pendulum (Bobbie Gentry Live at BBC) / Jesseye Lisabeth (Phoebe Bridgers) / Refractions (Bobbie Gentry vs Marissa Nadler) / Lousiana Man (Bobbie Gentry Live) / Courtyard (Beth Orton) / Ode To BIllie Joe (Lucinda Williams vs Bobbie Gentry) //

It's amazing what you can find when just digging for new music. One day I was listening to Hope Sandoval and I decided to click on the “Related Artists” link. As I perused through the list, I saw Marissa Nadler. For some reason, she just looked really interesting so I clicked it and the first […]
Hope Sandoval og Kurt Vile - Let me get there. Moses Hightower - Ellismellur. Lay Low - Little by little.

1993年,第二张专辑《So Tonight That I Might See》上市。 1996年,MAZZY STAR推出了他们的第三张唱片Among My Swan 。 EP----At The Doorway Again。

What's This Bitch Talking About? is the podcast version of Mixtress Radio (airs every Friday from 7-11pm CST on mixtressrae.com) Most of the songs mentioned are contained in the Sestra Playlist, the link to which is always in the podcast description notes. This episode contains a loooooooot of insufferable rambling about trying to figure out how to be a better human in a post I-can't-believe-we-expect-Donald-Trump-to-govern-us America. As always, every sentiment is positively dripping with my characteristic delusions of optimism. Sestra playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/mixtressrae/playlist/0vKHv3AjdDNNjUWIe5xtwt Album of the night is Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions' "Until the Hunter"
This edition features a healthy dose of psychedelic pop and folk before veering into more experimental directions. There are obscure gems from Bobby Jameson, Red Television, as well as new music from Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions, and some avant-garde pieces from Anthony Braxton, Raymond Scott and more. Thanks for listening. Artist/Song/Release/Year 01. Ron Geesin … Continue reading →

Tilefnið er heimildarmynd sem heitir Eight days a week ? the touring years og var frumsýnd í september. Hér er lagalisti þáttarins: The Beatles / She loves you The Beatles / Can´t buy me love The Beatles / A hard days night The Beatles / I wanna hold your hand Iggy & Stooges / No Fun Utangarðsmenn / I wanna be your dog Aaron Lee Tasjan / Little movies Pixies / Classic Masher Pixies / All i think about now Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions feat. Rob and Callum are back with their music podcast; the focus being immediacy, so prep yourself for 11 songs that go straight for the jugular. As seems to be standard we’ve got some great stuff from Australia with the post-punk snarl of Den and the rocknroll punk of Tyrannamen. There’s some nasty machinegun hardcore from Golden Pelicans, deathly dark hip hop from zeroh and amongst that some tender beauty from Hope Sandoval w/ Kurt Vile. Take a ride and drop us a line.
