A Very Opinionated Look At URGH! A MUSIC WAR--CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE: An interview with Lesley Woods of Au PairsHello everyone! This week, I'm releasing this extra-special episode from the Revolutions Per Movie Patreon for everyone to hear! It's an incredible conversation with a complete legend—Lesley Woods of Au Pairs, who has also been an immigration lawyer in the UK for over thirty years. Anyone who has been listening to the URGH! A MUSIC WAR PODCAST knows that Lesley's performance blew open my and Chaki's head with her slashing music and sexual politics lyrics…something that was new and necessary for young kids witnessing this film. So getting to talk to Lesley was an honor. We talk about the origin of Au Pairs at a bus stop, Lesley's political awakening in college, being banned by the BBC, how the podcast helped Lesley watch the film for the first time, the ever-present blood on her guitar, the band's first 7” Kerb Crawler, the way the band moved around on stage, what the band wanted to do differently on their 2nd LP, why the band gravitated towards music to dance to that was still protest music, the difference for Lesley writing music then and now, the incredible Urgh lineup they played with Gang of Four, Mekons & Steel Pulse, the trouble with music journalism and its attitudes towards women in the industry, how Lesley turned her back on music for a spell, why she turned to immigration and refugee law in the UK, freedom of expression and the right to hold your opinion, Thatcher's Section 28 law banning queer literature and references in schools, Gavin Friday of The Virgin Prunes, how Lesley found her way back to music and performing with members of Thurston Moore's band & Big Joanie, plus Lesley Woods explains why it really was an actual MUSIC WAR!!!If you enjoy the show, please consider joining at patreon.com/revolutionspermovie to support this completely independent endeavor (plus get access to over 170 episodes of Revolutions Per Movie, a 7" flexidisc with Ann Magnuson, Vanessa Briscoe Hay & Peter Buck, stickers, and more). This week on the news, Decoy says HELLLLLLO to Sleater-Kinney. Formed in Olympia in 1994, Sleater-Kinney was one of the defining bands of the riot grrrl movement. After releasing seven studio records, the band entered a hiatus in 2005 but returned with full force with No Cities to Love, released in 2015. The band's latest is called Little Rope, released earlier this year. Head over to the band's official Hello shop for shirts, totes, camo hats and music—I recommend checking out this great tribute album, featuring bands like Wilco, Low, Big Joanie, and St. Vincent, who's also produced Sleater-Kinney music in the past. In other news, earlier this week we were surprised to see that Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio AKA Bad Bunny, has joined the cast for the forthcoming Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to the 1996 original film. The Puerto Rican rapper joins Adam Sandler, and the film is slated to appear on Netflix in the future. And to close: in 1998, Swedish hardcore band Refused released their landmark album, The Shape of Punk to Come, which blended electronica, hard rock, jazz, and other forms. The band broke up not long after. But their influence continued to grow—prompting a reunion. This week, the band announced that it will stage its final tour in 2025, sharing dates, word of an expanded version of their classic album, and news about a tribute album, The Shape of Punk to Come Obliterated, featuring remixes and covers from bands like Zulu, Touche Amore, Quicksand, Ho99o9 and more. The Autumns, Beach House, The Dears – fucking love The Dears, Dirty Three, Emmy the Great, Fionn Regan Howling Bells, John Grant, Lanterns on the Lake, Laura Veirs, Lift to Experience, Midlake, The Walkman…For the last 25 years, Bella Union have been responsible for bringing me some of the best music I've ever heard. And before that, the label's owner, Simon Raymonde, in tandem with Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie in the immortal Cocteau Twins, was responsible for bringing me even more. I can't imagine what my listening habits would look like without Simon and without Bella Union, and so I'm delighted to speak to him on this episode about all of the above and more. We talk about the band Simon is currently managing – the brilliant Big Joanie – how Bella Union came to be, his thoughts on the legacy of his old band the Cocteau Twins, his feelings on where the record business finds itself in 2023, his forthcoming memoir, and his posthumous relationship with his father, the late, great Ivor Raymonde. How great? I mean, he wrote the Dusty Springfield song 'I Only Want to Be with You'! On the heels of releasing their sophomore album, and Kill Rock Stars debut, Back Home, UK black feminist punk trio Big Joanie join Carmel Holt for a thought-provoking conversation about their journey as musicians pushing back against the lack of intersectionality in punk and the music industry for the past decade, and the ongoing double bind of an industry that is simultaneously trying to diversify music spaces and falling prey to tokenism.

Winter is coming, and there are some ice cold tracks on this week's Independent Music Podcast that provide a stunning soundtrack for longer Northern Hemisphere nights. It's a long way from the Hot Beer we were taking on the last time O.B.F. collaborated with the late, great Nazamba, but their latest collaboration is truly superb.Elsewhere, Anthony Parasole brings his Full EFX project to the podcast, with thundering dungeon techno. We have horse-riding metal with Nansarunai's raw black Indonesian metal. The beautiful folk of Shovel Dance Collective is also a real highlight. Black Feminist Punk trio Big Joanie formed in London, but are now based over various cities in the U.K. Their sound is “punk” and… also looks to Riot Grrrl jaggedness and DIY sensibilities, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and girl group harmonies. Their 2022 album, Back Home, sees the band ruminating on the ideas of home, whether that's in the U.K., back in Africa or the Caribbean, and considering how second and third generation communities of Black & Brown folks define themselves as British people. Borne of guitarist/vocalist Stephanie Phillips's desire for a space “where I could be Black and be into punk and it wouldn't be seen as a conflict”, Big Joanie began as a post on social media, (Kerry Cardoza, Bandcamp), and is named for Phillips' mom. Stephanie Phillips of Big Joanie talks DIY and making one's own culture, and the band plays remotely from their London recording studio. On a literary note, Phillips is also a writer and journalist, whose own book Why Solange Matters is out now, via University of Texas Press. Drummer/vocalist Chardine Taylor-Stone's book, Sold Out: How Black Feminism Lost Its Soul, via Cassava Republic Press, is due out in late November of 2022. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “Your Words”, “Cactus Tree”, “Today” Watch "Your Words":
Hier rollt eine neue Diversität und Nonkonformität an: Gleich mehrere aktuelle Alben versprühen Wut, Angst und Energie und verpassen der «Gitarrenmusik» einen zukunftsgerechten Anstrich. Wir hören die spannendsten Auszüge, natürlich nicht ohne auch ein paar Klassiker zu zücken. 1, 2, 3, 4!
One of the beautiful things about music is that it's a seemingly bottomless resource. Whenever you begin to doubt it, something new and fresh quickly dispels the notion. Big Joanie's sophomore LP, Back Home, is just such a record. It's confirmation that the spirit of punk beats on in new groups, even as it charts new territories. Ahead of the album's release, singer and guitarist Stephanie Phillips joined us to discuss the band's journey, Sleater-Kinney, music journalism and the power of Solange. Hosted on Acast. Big Joanie - In My Arms from the 2022 album Back Home on Kill Rock Stars. British punk trio and International Clash Day alums Big Joanie are releasing this sophomore record Back Home on November 4th via Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz's Daydream Library Series (UK) and Kill Rock Stars in the US. Ahead of its release, they've dropped a string of singles including “Happier Still” and our Song of the Day, “In My Arms.” Led by a rambling guitar, the nostalgic track looks back on a past relationship with regret and melancholy. “I've compromised too many times /In my life,” sings Stephanie Phillips. “One day I'll make the great escape /And send another you away /But now I dream /Of you in my arms.” Frontwoman Stephanie Phillips said this of the song in a statement: “At this point I was getting tired of living in London and dreaming about another life. It's about knowing you should go another way in life but you end up dreaming about the road you've already travelled down even though you know it won't take you where you need to go.” On the flip side, the Lydia Garret-directed video for the track is joyful in celebrating queer love and friendships. Focusing on a group of teens over the course of an exhilarating day where they explore a theme park, have a bonfire on the beach, and finish off with a personal dance party with Big Joanie as the entertainment. Iain and Andrew offer some thoughts on the runners and riders up this year's Mercury Prize, before getting down to reviewing some fresh tuneage. Does U.S. Girls' pivot towards the eighties make for a welcome return? Does Big Joanie's brand of “black feminist punk” raise a pulse and a smile? Does the murky noise-rock of Chat Pile captivate, as well as challenge and confront? Does Matthew Davidson's output as Twain stand up to his work with alternative-folksters The Low Anthem? And does The Utopia Strong's second LP represent the progressive-synth trio's big break, or is it just a load of old balls? So many questions! A “masterwork of transcendental guitar” has The Vinyl Word. Marcelo Maldonado Peixoto (born November 5, 1967), also known as Marcelo D2, is a Brazilian rapper and singer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Acclaimed by young people, he is known for his unique style of rapping, which blends in the traditional Brazilian samba. Living in the poor suburbs, he grew up between the 'favelas' and the streets of Andarai, far from postcard Rio and its rich seaside districts. In this episode a playlist created and published by D2 between May 2017 and Nov 2020. Lineup: Death, X-Ray Spex, The Selecter, ESG, Glorious Din, Colourbox, A.R. Join Skin as she looks to the past to pay tribute to those that formed this genre, as well as looking forward to those leading its resurgence. She also addresses everything in between as each week we'll be putting together the pieces of the puzzle to discover more about the blackness of rock! The Blackness of Rock concludes with Skin addressing the current state of rock & race, something she discusses with British punk band, Big Joanie, and broadcaster, Sophie K.
Aside from her life as a fabulous multi-instrumentalist - bassist in Big Joanie, guitarist in Charmpit, drummer in the enigmatic Dirty Girl and solo synthesiserist (I just made that word up) - Estella Adeyeri is building communities and networks that are about providing opportunities and voices for the many, not just the few:She is a member of the team behind Decolonise Fest, an incredible music festival organised by and for punx of colour, she's a board member of Good Night Out Campaign which is all about safety on nights out, free from sexual harassment and violence, she volunteers at Girls Rock London which provides development and support for young and adult women, trans and nonbinary people.Oh, and she's also a fantastic DJ.Doesn't leave much time for Netflix…..
It's been a rough week so time for a much more relaxed episode of the Basement in full self-care mode. What interest do we have in ancient fisticuffs, riding the wind, terrible gigs, when drummers sing or the modernised works of Alan Bennett? All we need are our pumping hearts and the sweet sounds of Aphex Twin, Plot 32, Teenage Fanclub, Frenzal Rhomb, Big Joanie, Good Grief, The Walker Brothers and their sweet, satisfying ilk! So trousers down, teeth in and brave heart for another trip to the Basement. Bring a cloth. This week's guest on the podcast is Chardine Taylor-Stone from the band Big Joanie. In this episode, she talks about being inspired by the Afropunk documentary, punk's roots as a working class subculture, gender roles in the punk genre and much more... Big Joanie are a Black feminist punk band whose passionate live shows and punk rock ethos have led to them becoming one of the most talked about bands on the UK live scene. The band formed in the heart of London's DIY punk scene in 2013 and acts as a space where its members (singer/guitarist Stephanie Phillips, drummer Chardine Taylor-Stone, and bassist Estella Adeyeri) can be completely themselves as black women. Big Joanie released their debut album Sistahs in 2018 to wide critical acclaim on Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz's label Daydream Library. They have since toured with acts like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, and Gossip, and are currently working on their second album. Chardine Taylor-Stone is an award-winning cultural producer Black feminist activist and writer. She was featured in The Voice newspaper as one of the Women Who Rocked the World in 2015, Diva Magazine's LGBT Power List 2016 and Buzzfeed's ‘The Most Inspiring British LGBT People Of 2016‘. A regular on the Pride Power List, in May 2017 Chardine won the British LGBT Award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to LGBT+ life'. In 2018 she was nominated by Diva Awards for LGBT Activist/Campaigner of the Year and has again been nominated by Diva Awards in 2020 for “Unsung Hero”. A committed trade unionist she is vice-chair of the Musician's Union Equalities Committee and newly elected member of the London Regional Committee. Having fun is a serious business. In this episode British Library curator Polly Russell joins forces with illustrator and club-night founder Flo Perry to explore how lesbians and queer women have partied, socialised and come together since the 70s. Because it’s in these moments and places that communities thrive and identities are confirmed. And these spaces are under threat. Polly and Flo are heading back to the 80s to get a sense of lesbian nightlife then, with club promoter Yvonne Taylor. They’re exploring the power of punk with Chardine Taylor Stone - LGBT+ activist and drummer of black feminist punk band Big Joanie. And they’re meeting British Library Research Fellow Eleanor Careless to learn how lesbians found each other in the past using feminist magazine Spare Rib. There’ll also be lots of metaphorically partying in some of the hottest queer nights happening pre pandemic- Tabitha Benjamin’s Butch, Please and Xandice Armah’s Gal Pals. Get your glad rags on, it’s going to be a wild one. Unfinished Business podcast series is generously supported by Joanna and Graham Barker and The Eccles Centre for American Studies. A Pixiu Production.

Author and musician Stephanie Phillips, who plays in the Black feminist punk band Big Joanie and whose writing has been featured in major outlets all over the world, grew up a music fan but for years had "a general disinterest" in the Beatles, due largely to the "sad dad army" of fans that she couldn't relate to as a young woman of color. “There wasn't really much in the Beatles for me to latch onto,” Phillips tells host Ken Womack on "Everything Fab Four." “That was, I learned later, because of how their story and their myth and their music had been commandeered by a very specific white middle class elite.” On this episode Phillips talks about her influential essay "On Loving the Beatles as a Black woman," finding her own way into Beatles fandom, why we shouldn't call them "geniuses," and what she doesn't hear on their albums. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/everythingfabfour/support

An hour of summertime nostalgia in musical form.New music from Sneaks, Khruangbin, Fontaines D.C., Yves Jarvis, Big Joanie.
This week on the Yellow Brit Road, we dive through new music and old, discuss guitaring faux pas, and talk about identity. We opened with a solid set by Siouxie and the Banshees, and in a curveball for this show, American singer Andy Williams. His version of Can't Take My Eyes Off You can be heard here, and Muse's jazz cover for a BBC performance in 2002, here. Rock music is not dead, and this show will testify to that! We heard indie music from Gaffa Tape Sandy, Beach Riot, SuperGlu, Billy Nomates, Big Joanie, and Ailbhe Reddy. Billy Nomates' debut album releases in August. We had some math rock from Clever Girl, an album recorded globally on tour by Delta Sleep, and pop excess (excuse the pun) from Rina Sawayama (with her song XS), who the Mercury Prize deemed "not British enough" on passport grounds, in spite of being one of Britain's most exciting young pop musicians. The podcast discussed in the show, United Zingdom, by journalist Zing Tsing, can be heard here. This week's Masala Chai was straight from Toronto, Canada and featured a dash of lime as we listened to the Seams' sublime Lemonade and Partner's Hello and Welcome. Their album Never Give Up releases in November. Consider supporting your favourite musicians directly by buying their music and merchandise! The playlist for this week can also be found here. Listen live on your dial at 101.9 FM in the Kingston area, or on cfrc.ca, Sundays 8 to 9 PM! (Full shows are available in the archive for 3 months from release)

The Opus can't fail with The Clash. The diversity of influences on London Calling go way beyond reggae and dub. In fact, they go deeper than the music itself. This is an album that gets its hands dirty by digging right into the culture that wound up influencing the four English rockers. Is this cultural appropriation? If not, how did they manage to pull it off? And what can musicians today learn from their approach to making music? The Opus attempts to answer these questions as it continues to unpack the iconic double album. In the second episode of our London Calling series, host Andy Bothwell is joined by Spoon's Britt Daniel, Texas country legend Joe Ely, Houston rapper Fat Tony, South Florida Genreless musician Yeek, British LGBTQ activist and Big Joanie drummer Cardine Taylor-Stone, Head of Design for MOMA PS1 Vance Wallenstein, and filmmaker Joseph Patel. What are you waiting for? Join 'em aboard this train in vain above. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of London Calling, revisit a selection of The Clash’s best tracks via all major streaming services, and enter to win both the 40th anniversary London Calling Scrapbook and Super Bundle.
This week, we’re going truly global, taking in three continents. Lead singer and guitarist of the UK black feminist punk band Big Joanie, Stephanie Phillips, guides us through this bumper episode. Joining her is: one half of the duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, who’ve been playing together for almost 20 years and have been inspired by everything from Heavy Metal to Jazz, it’s Gabriela Quintero; a singer, composer and choir director from Cuba, she’s signed to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label and has been quoted as saying: “We want to make Cuban music universal again by mixing the traditional with our young spirits”, it’s Daymé Arocena; finally, a Cameroonian singer songwriter, one of 21 children and who started singing at the age of just 3. He mixes African, Latin and American influences, it’s Blick Bassy. Led by Stephanie, they’ll be discussing the expectations that are placed on their music from outside forces, how their various influences manifest themselves in the music, and whether or not politics can be a creative force.
Die Musikschreiber können Feierabend machen! Besser als Big Joanie selbst wird keine(r) ihre Musik beschreiben können. Sie sagen nämlich, sie seien „The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY and riot grrrl with a sprinkling of dashikis.“ Wobei ein Dashiki übrigens ein afrikanisches, politisch aufgeladenes Kleidungsstück ist – sozusagen das Stoff gewordene „Black Lives Matter“. Ihr merkt schon: Wir sind Fans des Trios aus London. Und ihr werdet es auch sein, wenn ihr euch ihre Debüt-EP „Sistahs“ reinzieht.

Growing up in Wolverhampton, Steph Phillips was a quiet girl, shy to the point of wanting to vanish during social occasions and conscious that as a black teenage female she was, anyway, invisible to most of society. These days, she's found her voice in a space where she can be what she describes as her "full self'" - she's the guitarist and lead singer with the black feminist punk band Big Joanie. In a lineage of music-making with attitude that can be traced back through Riot Grrrl to the original punk icon, the late Poly Styrene of X-Ray Specs, Steph now commands a stage on which issues of identity, of race and gender, of political activism and artistic expression collide in joyful, noisy creativity. Presented and produced by Alan Hall A Falling Tree production for BBC Radio 4

Singers, who needs 'em? Jeff and Jobe discuss some of their favorite instrumental tracks, both from strictly instrumental bands and from bands who gave their vocalists a rest. Jobe gives an extremely lukewarm review to Sistahs from Big Joanie, Jeff tries to understand the band Baroness and the people who like them, Clean Cut in the Unsigned Artist Spotlight, and the guys spend some time talking about smelly ferrets.

In 2017 it's easier than ever to express offence. The angry face icon on Facebook, a sarcasm-loaded tweet or a (comparatively) old-fashioned blog post allow us to highlight the insensitivities of others and how they make us feel - in a matter of moments. Increasingly, offence has consequences: people are told what they can and cannot wear, comedy characters are put to bed. Earlier this year, a white artist was condemned for her depiction of the body of a murdered black teenager. Those who were offended demanded that the painting be destroyed because 'white creative freedoms have been founded on the constraint of others'. It's easy to scoff. Detractors refer to those asking for a new level of cultural sensitivity as "snowflakes" and insist the offence they feel is self-indulgent. But history teaches that fringe discussions often graduate to mainstream norms. So are these new idealists setting a fresh standard for cultural sensitivity? A standard that society will eventually come to observe? Mobeen Azhar puts aside familiar critiques about the threat to free speech. Instead, he tries to understand the challenging arguments put forward by those who are pushing for new norms, and who believe that being offended will create a more culturally aware, progressive society. Featuring contributions from X-Factor star Honey G, black lesbian punk rockers Big Joanie and RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Charlie Hides Producer: Tim Mansel.
