July 20, 2024, marks 10 years since Cork venue the Pavilion, run by Pat Conway, Stevie G and Joe Kelly, closed its doors. It left an indelible mark on me and so many music lovers. Friendships were formed there, ideas were hatched, bands were watched, and DJs filled the floors. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, a whole host of the people who loved the Pav recall the six years when the recession took hold of Ireland and the Pavilion opened its doors. The first gig was Evan Dando and the Lemonheads in April 2008. The following year, Kanye West and the xx both graced its stage and the Pav was up and running. Theo Parrish, King Britt, the Pharcyde, Roy Ayers, Floating Points, Franz Ferdinand Eddie Reader, Lee Fields, Candi Staton, NASA, Theesatisfaction, Shabazz Palaces, Sly and Robbie, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Rakim are just some of the big international acts who played the Pav in that time. It also hosted and supported so many Irish acts, from Altered Hours to Hozier, Saint Yorda to Gilla Band. There were club nights like Go Deep, Sunday Times and Floating Joints which called the Pav home over the years. We hear about all of these and more over the course of this episode charting one of the best venues the country has ever seen. Erik Blood is the technical wizard of the Black Constellation. He's worked with nearly every artist in the Constellation and has left an undeniable footprint on Seattle music at large. But he's more than just a “behind the scenes” force. When Blood steps up to the mic, he uses every instrument and genre in his arsenal to convey his truths and intersecting identities. On this episode, Blood relays his journey into music production from recording tracks on a Teddy Ruxpin to producing pivotal Seattle records for Shabazz Palaces, Tacocat, THEESatisfaction, Moondoggies, and more. Blood also digs into his solo work, the way sexuality plays into his music, and growing up in a Black and white home. Blood's love of music and skill in capturing its recorded essence knows no boundaries. Maikoiyo Alley-Barnes is a multi-disciplinary artist – a filmmaker, writer, designer, and founding member of the Black Constellation. His work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum National History in New York, and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle – including a series of exhibitions in collaboration with several members of the Constellation. He's also directed music videos and short films for Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, and Porter Ray. In this episode, Larry Mizell, Jr. hosts an extended conversation with Alley-Barnes. The two discuss not just Alley-Barnes' work, but the pivotal art and community work of his parents, the engine of erasure that resounds throughout Seattle, and grander ideas around attribution, continuum, and authenticity. If every member of the Black Constellation is a star, Alley-Barnes is akin to gravity – an unseen force putting pieces into motion and holding disparate artistic worlds together. Thank you to Beverly Glenn-Copeland, KMRU, Laraaji, Nailah Hunter, Niecy Blues, Noel Brass Jr., Shabazz Palaces, Space Afrika, and Yves Tumor for lending their music to this episode. Stasia Irons, aka Stas THEE Boss, is an agent of change, a self-fulfilled prophecy of art as a means of embracing Blackness and queerness. Through her early days as half of the Sub Pop-signed hip-hop duo THEESatisfaction through her solo work, Stas has always been “ahead of her time.” But Stas isn't content to be looked back on as an innovator – she boldly and correctly asserts that her work deserves its recognition now. On this episode, Stas and her Black Constellation family reflect on her artistic journey, her heartbreaks, and the philosophies that made her one of America's most gifted and slept-on rappers and producers. We also hear reflections on the term “Afrofuturism,” the burden of being the first in an artistic movement, and the spiritual and familial continuum she and the Constellation all work within. On December 1st, 2006, Rahwa and Asmeret Habte took over Hidmo on 20th & Jackson. In a very short amount of time, Hidmo became known as a community center cleverly disguised as an Eritrean restaurant in Seattle's Central District, and a mecca for Seattle hip-hop. The space Rahwa and Asmeret helped create along with their family and friends became a safe space for youth in the neighborhood, an organizing hub for a large amount of community organizations in the city, and an all-ages venue for musicians who had very few venues accessible to them. Hidmo brought together community in a way that very few venues in our city ever have, and what happened those 4 years on 20th & Jackson can still be felt throughout our community, and the world today. Rahwa tragically passed away earlier this year, and in honor of her legacy and the legacy of what she helped build, we brought together a playlist of some of her favorite artists who have graced the hut, along with personal memories shared from the artists themselves, including Blue Scholars, THEEsatisfaction, Khingz, JusMoni, Hollis, Shabazz Palaces, Meklit, Invincible, Dakota Camacho, Beyond Reality, Siren's Echo, One Be Lo and more. 1. Blue Scholars - The Distance (feat. Rahwa Habte & Semone Andu) * words from Prometheus Brown 2. Khingz - Blaq Han Solo (feat. Rahwa Habte on the outro) * words from Meklit 3. THEESatisfaction is Cat and Stas. The pair live, laugh, love, dance and create in Seattle. They were one of the first hip hop acts signed to legendary indie music label Sub Pop. This might have been seen as a bit of a weird move for an indie music label… (Sub Pop is remembered as the epicenter for all things “alternative” in the 90s–they were the home of Nirvana among many others) …But really, good music is good music. Check out “Do You Have Time?” In the words of THEESatisfaction: “A love song about pot, or is that a pot song about love?” Take a listen to THEESatisfaction, though, and you can see why Sub Pop snapped up these two talented women. They are a potent mix of introspective Slam Poetry, Black Jazz and Sunday morning soul–100% hip hop. Listen to our chat.
