Then, we get recommendations that play with heavy distortion, post-rock, jazz, and field recordings. "Soundscapes reveal a lot about how people think and behave." The field recordist and musician talks about listening culture, repatriating African sounds and his new album with The Bug. Today's conversation moves away from the dance floor, focusing instead on the soft, ambient soundscapes of the Berlin-based musician Joseph Kamaru—AKA KMRU—whose work has been featured at festivals like CTM, Mutek, Atonal, Horst Music and Arts, Dekmantel, and Unsound; concert halls like The Barbican; and major galleries and site-specific installations around the world. Kamaru moved to Europe from Nairobi, where he first became interested in music production, and field recordings specifically. As a graduate student in the sonic arts, he learned that the majority of the discourse around sound art practices is specific to Western Eurocentric or occidental ways of thinking. He's since embarked on a mission to use field recording as a means of repatriating African identities that are often left out of institutional archives and grapple with the legacy of colonialism. In this RA Exchange, Kamaru reflects on the sociopolitical angle of his work, and his observation that listening, by its very nature, is never neutral. He also talks about how civilisation and technology has changed our collective listening habits; how sound sources beyond the human hearing range make their way into his work with the use of electromagnetic microphones; and his new album, Disconnect, made with the musician Kevin Richard Martin (AKA The Bug). Listen to the episode in full.

“A mixtape of unreleased music and a few collaborations with friends which I thought would be a perfect mix for a Monday listen.” KMRU, also known as Joseph Kamaru, is a sound artist originally from Nairobi and currently based in Berlin. He explores sound to convey various interpretations in his work, drawing from his listening experiences in Nairobi and beyond and grounded in the discourse of field recording, noise, and sound art. Working under the guidance of Jasmine Guffund at Berlin's Universität der Künste (better known as UDK), KMRU looked at waveforms and embarked on a process where he would “write scores from the shapes, gradually turning the scores into raw synth sounds.” Kamaru's ambient-experimental music has taken him to the Barbican, Berlin Atonal, Présences électronique, and seen releases on Editions Mego, Subtext, Seil Records. His new LP ‘Dissolution Grip,' released on his OFNOT imprint, marks a shift in his approach, blending field recordings with synthesized sounds, hinting at his evolving musical direction. With all that in mind, we thought we'd ask Kamaru to put us together this week's mixtape for a Monday… let's get stuck in. @kamarujoseph

Everyday is a good day to support and buy from Black artists. Formerly known as Black Bandcamp - Black Artist Database has a simple premise: to get more Black people paid for their music. It's a crowdfunded resource of artists, aimed at bringing cultural and material support to the Black community. Alongside artists and DJs; they throw events, skills-building workshops and now have a podcast. It's also a project that seeks to call out the effects of white supremacy on creative access and daily lives; whilst providing an antidote rooted in the vulnerability and expressions of black creativity. Hear from Tanya Akinola aka T-N. She's a naarm-based DJ, writer and label manager who has been working alongside B.A.D. She joined us to chat through how she got involved with B.A.D, creating your own systems of creativity, and what it is to act in meaningful solidarity with Black artists. This week's show featured tracks by Black and First Nations artists selected by Tanya Akinola including Tygapaw, Dameeela, KMRU, plus unreleased tracks by Claddy World and Niks. “It's only the tangible objects that are being returned to their places, but these intangible [sounds], or like the ephemera, how would one return it? [...] You can give them back to the people.”In the final part of a diptych series guided by Kenyan composer and FSN collaborator Nyokabi Kariũki, we meet KMRU, one of the leading ambient electronic artists in the world today. The conversation traces KMRU's journey from how place influenced his music-making, into the way ethics have shaped his field recording practice, and finally, his 2022 project ‘Temporary Stored'. With this album and research project, the sound artist attempts to bring sound back into the conversation around the restitution of art objects back to Africa, which has been a growing topic in the world of museums and archives in recent years. “Sound, too, was a looted object,” KMRU says. This leads Nyokabi to pose the question, “what spaces are right to record? What spaces are better left alone?”The interview between the two Kenyan sound artists, Nyokabi Kariũki and KMRU, offers a powerful second glance of some of the exciting things bubbling up in the Kenyan music scene; and it shines a light on how sound is an important part of how Africans understand their relationship to place, heritage, and life. Transcript: Gaylene Gould: Right now, it feels like the old world is crumbling [echoes]. We're kind of teetering on the edge of a new one, but if we're gonna sidestep the problems that have played us so far, we are gonna need new tools, new ways to be together, to live new, and to connect [echoes]. Tai Shani: Any of the things that do have that idea in them of like what the world could be [are like] casting a stone into darkness, but that stone gets met at some point? Or, that's the hope, isn't it? Zing Tsjeng: What if we just thought a little bit bigger here, and we came up with an alternative view of the future and what it could be like. Gaylene Gould: What is a world and how do we begin to reshape it? What role can artists play in this? These are the questions we'll be exploring in REWORLDING, a new Serpentine Podcast series hosted by me, Gaylene Gould. Irenosen Okojie: You can create worlds that people don't recognise. You can create worlds that feel familiar, but suddenly you take somebody somewhere completely new and recalibrate a universe. [echoes] Gaylene Gould: The Serpentine program is all about exploring art and ideas for a changing world, and I've been working with the team to hunt for tools that will help us fashion a more expansive, compassionate and resilient world. Samson Kambalu: For me, remembering is almost like a creative exercise, you know, to try to get back to the present moment by the way of the past, Declan Rowe John: Art is like a way to portray your message to the world and kind of bring people together and show that they aren't alone. Gaylene Gould: Throughout this series, I'll be speaking to leading artists, designers, writers, and thinkers. We'll be hearing new sound art as well as diving back into Serpentine's vast archive to try and answer some of these questions. Performer from Tai Shani's work: I pray you can survive this and live forever Gaylene Gould: In REWORLDING, we'll be dreaming, listening, playing, remembering, and connecting in radical new ways. We'll be traveling together through gardens and game worlds, inner states and outer space, and I cannot wait to share the journey with you. Our first episode drops in January, 2023, so subscribe to Serpentine Podcast now and start your year by reworlding with us.
Nyokabi Kariūki, Moor Mother, Edward Wakili-Hick and KMRU discuss yelling to the universe, why making music is easy, quick thinking collaborations, what experimentalism means to them, and struggling through your processes. Nyokabi Kariūki grew up in Nairobi and played classical piano from an early age, before moving to New York to study composition. Her sound is guided by a love for experimentation, improvisation and collaboration. KMRU, a sound artist and musician who is also from Nairobi, is one of the leading exponents of Kenya's experimental music scene. His hypnotic ambient music is made up of environmental sounds and field recordings; he's also the grandson of the influential Benga and gospel artist Joseph Kamaru. Nigerian-British musician and drummer Edward Wakili-Hick is a member of renowned jazz quartet Sons of Kemet. His most recent project, Nok Cultural Ensemble, draws on Afro-diasporic percussive traditions to create a sound that looks both to the past and the future. Poet, musician and educator Camae Ayewa, aka Moor Mother, is one of the most in-demand musicians around. Her sound delves into free jazz, soul and Black classical traditions.
RADICAL MURMUR is a three-part sonic essay on the possibilities of sound. Close your eyes, open your ears. Part 2: RESONANCES OF LOSS. In this episode, we listen to the sighing and groaning of a tired planet. In composer Evelien van den Broek's music, we hear field recordings of animals that no longer exist. This is how she tries to make the current "biological destruction" palpable. Peter Cusack travelled to Chernobyl and other ecological disaster zones as a "sonic journalist". What do places we know from the news but that we have never 'heard', sound like? And philosopher Salomé Voegelin reflects on how the COVID-19 crisis threw us back on ourselves, threatening to evaporate the sonic "in-between" between people. "There is no inner genius, there is only an outer connection." RADICAL MURMUR is made in collaboration with rekto:verso, Gonzo (circus) en Collateral. Today's guest deejay is Joseph Kamaru, AKA KMRU. Having Joseph on the show is a bit of synchronicity. I became aware of Joseph's music a few years ago while searching for music on Bandcamp. What immediately struck me was the sense of intimacy I experienced while listening to his music. Yes, I'm aware that the genres Joseph expresses himself through lend themselves to that kind of feeling. And I'm also aware that this is a complete projection, but I got the sense that a movement of thoughts and emotions conveyed in his music. Shortly after conning across Joseph, guest deejays on Soundwave began including tracks from his album in their mixes. So, of course, I reached out to him to share select tracks on the show. oseph's mix, like his releases, has that sense of interplay between thoughts and emotions. And, perhaps, sympathetically, Joseph's mix stirred up thoughts and feelings in me, which is the whole point. Join sun next week when our guest deejay will be protoU. See you then. Today's guest deejay is Pierre Laplace. I invited Pierre to share a mix on Soundwave after hearing his 2019 album, You Disappeared. Since then, Pierre has released a new album, Sundown. Where You Disappeared felt like the soundtrack to a China Miéville novel, Sundown felt like a Koyaanisqatsisque soundtrack for a doomed planet. The album notes for Sundown tell a tale of desperate conflict in Rome in the year 2062. That works, too. The album drips with foreboding. The first mix Pierre shared was an unexpected delight. Then I could hear the influences of someone like, say, Ennio Morricone, in his music, Pierre's mix didn't convey the feeling of his own music. Pierre's mix for today's show is further from his albums. His mix is more unexpected and just as delightful. Aside from three artists, I'm unfamiliar with the musicians who appear in Pierre's mix. I've gone down the listening rabbit hole on Spotify because all the music in his mix is brilliant. I'm sure you'll be doing the same. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be KMRU. On this edition of Free City Radio (120) we hear from photographer Darren Ell who speaks about documenting moments of protest and organizing within movements for transformative social change, locally and globally. Darren speaks about the ways that these movements intersect and also about efforts to document realities of anti-colonial struggles in Haiti and Palestine. This interview was sparked by a photo series that Darren published called "Speaking Out," which you can find here: https://www.darrenell.com/index/G0000draAtKwaSi8 The photo series visits moments at Occupy Wall Street in NYC, the main photo that accompanies the podcast today, also two protests in Montreal to oppose neo-colonial Israeli state military bombardments in Lebanon and Gaza, Palestine. Finally a protest from the Quebec student strike in 2012, during an action organized to protest the neoliberal hike in post-secondary tuition that was being pushed by the Liberal Party in Quebec. "Ambient as interesting as it is interesting"The term Power Ambient is yes, another attempt at putting a badge or genre to a wide-encompassing range of music stylistically, but it's one that I have often gravitated towards amongst many others when describing a particular style of music we are dealing with here. When it comes to a spectrum of Ambient music styles, I'm more often than not on the ‘lean in' side of things, than the ‘lean back'. It's easy to throw up Brian Eno's definition of Ambient music “…as ignorable as it is interesting” to help elaborate on what I mean, as essentially within a Power Ambient context, we are removing the desire to ignore it.To put it another way, Power Ambient is best suited to those who want to immerse themselves in the music; the wall of sound; big movements; rumbling bass; wide frequencies, and layers of dense drones. These are elements that envelope a space in richness; be it soft and all-encompassing like a heavy blanket, or more on the noise spectrum, making your body rattle and the hairs on your neck stand-up on end. But the common output is that you're better off taking note of what's happening, than sticking it on in the background and making a cup of tea. It's not a new descriptive term. A 2014 Fact magazine article captured a few artists that seemed to be prevailing in this style, alongside a mix that Chris SSG loosely described as including Power Ambient (now Chris references his style as Big Room Ambient) and more. recently a Bandcamp list (although not sure all that stuff aligns with my own vision for it). There is no doubt in my mind, however, that a powerful style of Ambient music has exploded in recent years (as has the creativity of Ambient music in general, really). Perhaps this style has been more embraced due to a couple of things. In dark times comes inherent anger and expression, and it's pretty grim out there right now. For any music culture, this can often send people into darker production spaces. Secondly, I can feel an emerging undercurrent of rebellion for what ‘Ambient' can stand for nowadays. With a world of meditative apps and ‘Piano Chill' playlists continuing to give Ambient music a certain reputation, (at least we have moved on from Spa music, right?), I have a feeling this stereotyping is pushing producers, and even listeners to explore new styles of Ambient music, and opening doors into more expressive forms of music that stand out against an all too frequent beige playlist. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean that Power Ambient is just noise and complexity for the sake of it (it can be) but like all music, there's an art to getting the balance right. For me, Power Ambient can range from relatively quiet, intense soundscapes with a mysterious underpinning, to just short of full-on Merzbow wall-shaking. Call it a version of Noise, Drone, Experimental, whatever, but wrapped in a different guise, it's still bearable as Ambient music but stops short of becoming too much. I wanted to highlight just a few of my favorite artists whose broad strokes defined ‘Ambient' music, has always made me sit up and listen. As with all Portals features, I try to focus on a mix to bring the idea to life and a jump-off/entry point for the artists included. This was harder to mix than a regular DJ set, because of the inherent energy of Power Ambient music. Used consistently in a mix, at some point you're going to get burnt out and it will start to fade into the background just like listening to white noise. In my experience, Ambient tracks with force or energy are best used interspersed in sets to make people lean in and grab their attention, or as part of other styles to continue a certain level of energy (I've heard this type of music as an interlude in more heavy beat-driven sets for example). It can also work great as a live show where the listener knows what they are getting into already, of course (earplugs at the ready). As a 1hr+ mix, I, therefore, had to be considerate of the energy and flow and tried to create a few distinct chapters with peaks and troughs and an easy onramp at the beginning. I encourage you to use the links below to jump off into each artist's universe on Bandcamp. Despite it being a relatively well-known list of musicians when it comes to the Ambient enthusiasts, I've tried to give a good snapshot of artists that might push into this style within some of their works, especially if any of this music is new to you. RIP to two influential producers included in this mix, Cesar (Mount Shrine) and one of the greatest noise/experimental artists of our time, Mika Vainio. Maikoiyo Alley-Barnes is a multi-disciplinary artist – a filmmaker, writer, designer, and founding member of the Black Constellation. His work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum National History in New York, and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle – including a series of exhibitions in collaboration with several members of the Constellation. He's also directed music videos and short films for Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, and Porter Ray. In this episode, Larry Mizell, Jr. hosts an extended conversation with Alley-Barnes. The two discuss not just Alley-Barnes' work, but the pivotal art and community work of his parents, the engine of erasure that resounds throughout Seattle, and grander ideas around attribution, continuum, and authenticity. If every member of the Black Constellation is a star, Alley-Barnes is akin to gravity – an unseen force putting pieces into motion and holding disparate artistic worlds together. Thank you to Beverly Glenn-Copeland, KMRU, Laraaji, Nailah Hunter, Niecy Blues, Noel Brass Jr., Shabazz Palaces, Space Afrika, and Yves Tumor for lending their music to this episode. Experimental sound artist KMRU(@kamarujoseph)is a master of quietness. His music is as much about empty space as it is the delicate field recordings that fill it in. The Kenyan artist has been perfecting this balancing act from his base in Berlin, most notably on 2020 full-length Peel. It's a record of slowly unfolding synth beauty and drawn-out drone mindfulness. Soft focus chords bleed and blend into one another like different shades of watercolour paint and the environmental nature of the sound sources lends it a gorgeously natural atmosphere. For this week's most meditative mix, KMRU puts together an hour of soothing sound in a painterly fashion. It is unhurried but always going somewhere thanks to a gentle underlapping rhythm, expansive synth arc or little hiss of static. What sounds like distant vocal calls drift in and out of the mix which at times is like a recording from the furthest recess of the cosmos, at others the pleasant ambiance you might hear out of a Berlin window on a sunny afternoon.
Listen to an interview with filmmaker Franz Böhm on the film Dear Future Children, which follows the experiences of three young activists involved in frontline movements for progressive social change, in Chile, Hong Kong and Uganda. The film is described this way : "The project follows activists on the protests in Hong Kong against the Beijing-influenced administration under Carrie Lam, the protests in Chile against social inequality in the country and in Uganda at the local Fridays for Future protests and actions for climate justice." Dear Future Children has been projected by Cinema Politica and I collaborated on those screenings, the context within which this interview has been recorded also. Music on this edition is "Jinja Encounters" by KMRU. Free City Radio is hosted and produced by Stefan @spirodon Christoff
The DIY bedroom-producer stars of this episode are Joseph Kamaru from Nairobi recording in Berlin under the name KMRU, Tristan Arp from Mexico City and CARM out of New York. We celebrate the release of the wonderful new record from Inni-K which fashions a new sonic cloak for the ancient sean-nós form and re-visit the music of Nicolas Jaar and his deepest work yet, Cenizas. In between, there's time to marvel at the powerful sounds of resistance coming from the alto-saxophone of Matana Roberts and at the fruits of a unique collaboration between two uncrowned kings of the wild frontier, Pavel Milyakov and Bendik Giske. Electronic musician and sound artist Josep Kamaru, aka KMRU, takes us on our first December sonic journey. Born in Nairobi and currently based in Berlin, KMRU is a sound artist and producer whose methods include field recording, improvisation, noise, machine learning, radio art and drones. With a paramount sound and visual sensibility, his work is reminiscent of ambient masters such as Lawrence English. KMRU's sound though is uniquely positioned between the rarely-married cultures of ambient and African music, entwining his compositions with field recordings from his native Kenya and the surrounding countries of East Africa. Self-releasing his productions, these have been received very enthusiastically by both critics and the audience. In 2020, he released three albums that showed the depth and range of his sound: Peel, an LP of hypnotic drones on the avant-garde institution Editions Mego; Opaquer, a collection of vivid and dreamlike sound sculptures; and Jar, a dreamlike cassette of found sounds and analogue ambience. KMRU hasn't stopped in 2021 with a few more releases including Logue, an album Formed of tracks written from 2017 to 2019, which represents an artist not only in command of his form but also willing to develop and evolve, ready to deconstruct and radically refocus his music to explore new contours of experimental and ambient sound design. This mix he shares is a liminal narrative of falling asleep, each track feels like an episode of a hypnagogic state. I've been thinking deeply about dreams and nostalgia this past week and these tracks evoke this feeling. Tracklist: Patricia Wolf - Morning Light KMRU & Nyokabi Kariuki – unreleased Fields We Found – Drops Alexandra Spence - Suddenly Silent Perila & Ulla - every something is an echo of nothing Kevin Richard Martin - In Slow Motion Klara Lewis & Peder Mannerfelt - Styrofoam Tone Pita - Two Top Five Tim Hecker and Daniel Lopatin - Uptown Psychedelia Aho Ssan - Outro (KMRU Remix) Tashi Wada - March 2007 MIGUEL ANGEL TOLOSA - salon 09-02 loscil – Vespera The Transcendence Orchestra - Weather Series John Hassel -Hex Sarah Davachi - Border of Mind

I l'Adriano Calero ens parla de la sèrie de Winding Refn "Too Old to Die Young" on els llocs i situacions s'acompanyen d'ambientacions molt determinades.
"Within the complex sound spectre of our environments and surroundings, sounds are always immersive, proximal, and constantly pushing through our bodies. There is a temporal flux with the sounds of our habitus and daily lives which most often goes unnoticed and ignored. My practice with field recording and engagement with the environment, heightened my awareness of my surroundings and sounds that inhibit this place- learning from them and using the environment as an instrument. There is an underworld in which these audio environments aren't accessible to us and is rich with sounds. ‘Resonant Links' investigates this aural-dual infrastructure of the urban and sea life accentuating auditory perspectives and dimensions of these two worlds posing critical questions on our sonic habitus and ecologies." KMRU is a SHAPE artist 2021. SHAPE is a platform co-financed by Europe Creative program of European Union. ‣ bit.ly/ENSEMBLE005 ‣ bit.ly/ENSEMBLE005-EN

Σ2 explores darker sides of experimental music and spatial aspects of sound. Intense and occasionally harsh, the compilation reflects on the lineage of unconventional composition — minimalist drone, spoken word, field recordings and underground noise. Coming from different backgrounds and using diverse production techniques, the 11 artists deliver a dense sonic palette and challenge the listener to go beyond the conformity of genre and into the unknown.
