They discuss the process of making their new record I Just Want To Be Wild For You (out February 18th on Kill Rock Stars), life in Portland Oregon over the last couple years and how a space heater contributed to their sanity preservation. Maria explains why she see's loneliness as luxury and why it's precious to her. Joe plays Road Song, a tune which illustrates the circular monotony of touring, something most musicians are presently longing for. Matthew and Maria tell us why they feel most "alive" on tour, share a few tour survival techniques and why the experience of spending time with people you don't know is important. We recently had the pleasure of attending the Treefort Music Festival in Boise, Idaho, an annual event bringing an eclectic musical lineup as well as discussions, food, beer, and much more. We had a great time at the fest and one of the highlights was getting to have a conversation with Open Mike Eagle and Video Dave. Mike owns our podcast network Stony Island and we have interviewed him several times before, but he is truly one of the most practiced and engaging podcast guests on the planet. This was our first time talking to Video Dave and we all got along well immediately. Mike drops some knowledge about What Had Happened Was Season 3, his TV writing gig, and his feelings around performing in these uncertain times. Dave tells us about his excellent video projections and his last album, Week 1560. Our hosts also share some impressions about traveling, music festivals, and getting back together to pod in person. Beats this week are from our friend Controller 7's new album entitled exhale02: Moments. These shenanigans are brought to you by the world's greatest hip-hop storytelling flower-giving-focused podcast network, Stony Island Audio. Learn more about your ad choices. Joshy Soul is an artist who finds his stride amongst the things he knows best: art and soul. Based in Long Beach, CA, Joshy Soul has soaked up every hint of inspiration during his journey. At an early age gospel music was a critical thread of his youthful fabric. His grandmother from New Orleans would sing hymns of the religious South throughout their house, and this lit a musical fire in his heart that would eventually manifest itself into Joshy Soul. When with his former outfit 'The Cool' Joshy Soul amassed a noteworthy gigography including sold out shows at the Egyptian Theater and Gallivan Plaza in Salt Lake City, headlining the Treefort Music Festival, performing at Hard Rock's Miami Dolphins Stadium, performing with Nick Murphy, and supporting the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, The Roots, Cat Power, Haley Reinhart, and more. He recently released a new single titled “Celebration” on June 9th. Grizzly Goat's music is as the band's name suggests, undomesticated. Grizzly's blend of folk-rock spans the entire breadth of the Americana genre; from soft and sincere campfire ballads to rocking electric harmonica solos on top of pounding drums and flailing banjo. The band is hardworking and tireless. They've brought their rootsy compositions from coast to coast in their white passenger van. Whether at a festival or a small scale BBQ joint, Grizzly Goat's aim is to connect with their audience on an individual level, building a relationship with each listener. Specifically, the band has supported acts such as Greensky Bluegrass, Jim Avett, River Whyless, Town Mountain, Jamestown Revival, and Brett Dennen, along with playing at such festivals as the John Hartford Memorial Fest, Treefort Music Festival, Mayesfest, Forest Fest, Decatur BBQ Blues and Bluegrass Fest, Zion Canyon Music Fest, and the kick-off for the Cold Mountain Music Festival. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

On Tuesday we're previewing Season 4 of Gritty Birds. This week's interview is with constantly touring married master duo Kolars. I met with the group while they were in Boise in 2017. They are infectious, not just in personality, but also their intense stage set up. A mix of tap, drums and sultry guitar and vocals, they're one of my favorites. Find out more at grittybirds.com
I was very fortunate to run into one of my favorite current rappers, Mariah Parker (aka Linqua Franqa), at Treefort Music Festival earlier this year. And somehow I managed to keep my fanboying to a minimum for long enough to talk to her about her worst show ever. We were using the festival's press room, which was in fact reserved for someone more official, so the convo was kept short. But Mariah manages to pack in a lot in 22 minutes. Because we were rushed, I failed to give her the introduction I would have liked, so I'll just say here that I first became aware of her right after the 2018 election. I was passing through Athens, Georgia, having a burger with a friend and talking about the amazing slate of women of color who had recently been elected to congress. I think I had said something about the delight I'd felt seeing the old white Christian dudes cringe as some of the women who would later be known as "The Squad" were sworn into office on a Koran rather than a Bible, and my buddy Adam brought up the recent Athen election in which a county commissioner was sworn in on a copy of Malcom X's autobiography. He then added that this woman was also a local rapper. I had to hear the music of this person, and it wasn't long before I was a huge fan of her music and her politics. Big thanks to Mariah and her partner Deidre for the great hangs and conversations.

Ep. 74: Live recorded from Treefort music festival in Boise, Idaho – Chef & food system advocate Kris Komori, and farmer & seed propagator Beth Rasgorshek || – For Sourcing Matters episode 74 we join chef & food system advocate Kris Komori, and farmer and seed propagation Beth Rasgorshek for a conversation @ The Treefort music festival in Boise, ID – recorded in-front of a live audience. With three consecutive James Beard nods, Kris Komori is the rock star of Idaho’s chef world. A graduate of the College of Idaho, he sharpened his kitchen skills in Portland before moving to the Gem State. Komori’s creative, constantly changing menus drew fast admiration when State & Lemp opened in 2013. Most recently, he and his team have been developing a new concept and restaurant that will launch in downtown Boise soon. Beth Rasgorshek has worn many hats: journalist, pioneering CSA farmer, flour producer and now seed farmer. Today, Rasgorshek grows certified organic vegetable seeds on seven tillable acres at Canyon Bounty Farm in Mampa. She now raises and sells both small-seeded and big-seeded crops like green beans, dry beans, edamame, various flower seeds, watermelon, muskmelon, peppers, wheat, leeks and onion. We’re a lot more alike than different. That’s said about people from areas all over the world. But, when it comes to farmers and food producers – the similarity and bond is unquestionable. With the regenerative agriculture revolution we’re discovering that we have friends and like minded brethren on every corner of planet -and- increasingly everywhere in between. TuneIn to hear about what’s going on in Idaho. Learn how our problems with a common enemy could ultimately unite our diverse stakeholder for battle. ABOUT TREEFORT: The Treefort Music Fest is a five-day, indie rock festival which is held at numerous venues throughout downtown Boise, Idaho in late March. Slow Caves first performed in our studio in 2015. Since then the Fort Collins band has signed to the Cincinnati-based Old Flame Records and released the "Desert Minded" EP. This year they've performed at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and Treefort Music Festival in Boise, Idaho. The self-described "synth-punk" band returned to our studio earlier this month. They performed some new music and spoke with Scott Carney about signing to their new label, how they've evolved as a band over the past two years and getting compared to the Beach Boys.
