The last time I had the privilege of interviewing Rhiannon Giddens it was in 2017 at Edmonton Folk Fest. In the next five years, she became a World star. For example: In October 2017, Giddens was named one of the 2017 class of MacArthur "Genius" Fellows. In 2017 and 2018, Giddens appeared in the fifth and sixth seasons of the CMT's  In January 2018, Giddens co-produced Songs of Our Native Daughters for Smithsonian Folkways. in early 2018, the Nashville Ballet announced that Rhiannon Giddens has been commissioned to write the music for Lucy Negro, Redux. In 2019, Giddens released two studio albums: Songs of Our Native Daughters  and There Is No Other with Italian musician Francesco Turrisi Giddens earned an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for her lasting impact on the UNCG community and her work in music. In 2023, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music from Princeton University In other words, the last 5-6 years have been a delightful blur. Thus my first question was …what do you remember of the last 5 years? If anyone is going to change music in her lifetime – it's Rhiannon Giddens!!   Enjoy.

By the standards of any musician, Rhiannon Giddens has taken a twisting and complex path. She was trained as an operatic soprano at the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and then fell almost by chance into the study of American folk music and took up the banjo. With like-minded musicians, she founded the influential Carolina Chocolate Drops, which focussed on reviving the repertoire of Black Southern string bands. Giddens plays on Beyoncé's new country album, which boldly asserts the Black presence in country music. But her view of Black music is unbounded by genre: “There's been Black people singing opera and writing classical music forever.” Giddens shared a Pulitzer Prize for the opera “Omar” in 2023, and as a solo artist, she has moved through the Black diaspora and beyond it. David Remnick talked with Giddens when her album “There Is No Other,” recorded in Dublin, had just come out, and she performed in the studio with her collaborator, Francesco Turrisi. This segment originally aired May 3, 2019.

This July 4th, we celebrate our nation's 246th birthday. Throughout these years GOD has truly blessed these United States. We have so much for which to give HIM thanks, and we should! Even though HIS great blessing has been poured out on our nation, we live in a time of great division and chaos. Our land is in need of healing. While GOD's plan is for HIS people, the Church, to be HIS instruments of healing in our land. We have allowed that national division to distract us and divide us. In Acts 4, the Apostles Peter and John stood before the leaders of their nation and declared that, “THERE IS NO OTHER”! “There is no other” through which healing can come. “There is no other” through which salvation can come. “There is no other” to build upon but JESUS! Join Pastor Joe Still as we look to GOD's Word for the way to bring healing in the Church of our LORD JESUS and healing to our land.

By the standards of any musician, Rhiannon Giddens has taken a twisting and complex path. Trained as an operatic soprano at the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory, Giddens fell almost by chance into the study of American folk music. Alongside two like-minded musicians, she formed the Carolina Chocolate Drops, in which she plays banjo and sings. The group is focussed on reviving the nearly forgotten repertoire of Black Southern string bands, but the audience for acoustic music remains largely white. Giddens tells David Remnick she was heartbroken that her largest Black audience was at a prison concert. “The gatekeepers of Black culture are not interested in what I'm doing,” she says. “This is a complaint I've heard from many, many people of color who do music that's not considered Black—hip-hop, R. & B.” Her view of Black music is more expansive: “There's been black people singing opera and writing classical music forever.” As a solo artist, Giddens is moving increasingly further afield from African American and American music; her new album, “There Is No Other,” recorded in Dublin in collaboration with the musician Francesco Turrisi, explores folk styles from the Middle East, Europe, and Brazil, as well as early America. She and Turrisi perform “Wayfaring Stranger,” the ancient ballad “Little Margaret,” and the tarantella “Pizzica di San Vito.”    This segment was previously aired in 2019.

She played cello, keyboards and sang in the group, and after five hit albums, she left the band to pursue a solo career as The Gentle Waves. She kept The Gentle Waves moniker for a few albums, afterward deciding to record music under her given name. Between 2006 and 2013, Isobel also made three albums with Screaming Trees' Mark Lanegan, and her most recent album There Is No Other, was released on Rough Trade right before the pandemic crushed society for a year!  This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi recently completed their first tour of Australia together, although it turned out to be an abbreviated visit due to the cancellation of their appearance at the Blue Mountains Folk Festival. However, they did appear at Womadelaide and the Port Fairy Folk Festival to great acclaim and we saw them give a final brilliant show at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Saturday March 14. The day prior to this they spoke to Brian Wise and played several songs from their acclaimed album There Is No Other, released in 2019. (The song 'I'm On My Way' was nominated for a Grammy and, in September 2019, Giddens received the Legacy of Americana Award at the Americana Honors & Awards in Nashville).

Criticised for not expressing sympathy for Jeffrey Epstein’s victims in his recent interview with BBC's Emily Maitlis, Prince Andrew has since told friends he ‘regretted’ not doing so. We consider how victims and survivors are so often an afterthought when allegations of sexual assault are being discussed. French women don’t get fat. They look effortlessly chic and coiffed at all times too. We all know the cliché of the perfect French woman – but how much of it is true? And how much does it impact French women who might not fit into this mould? Alice Pfeiffer, author of the book Je ne suis pas Parisienne, takes us through the history of this problematic icon. Women make up 28 per cent of the police workforce in England and Wales, but in ranks of chief inspector or above, women only represent 20 per cent.? As all 43 forces attend the first Gender Equality Summit, we ask how can they encourage women to see policing as a viable career. Rhiannon Giddens is a Grammy Award winning musician who went from opera to folk. She explains why she made the move, and the inspiration behind her new album, There Is No Other. Earlier this month, McDonald's Chief Executive Officer Steve Easterbrook was fired for having a consensual relationship with a subordinate. But what are the rules where you work? And how easy are they to navigate? We hear from two listeners and Chantal Gautier, who specialises in workplace psychology. As statistics show 46% of gamers are women and the number of women working in the games industry is also growing, we ask how are women re-shaping the landscape of gaming? And as Frozen 2 hits the cinema, how does it measure up to the first instalment? Bidisha and Rhiannon Dhillon discuss.

All movement m regardless of what is moving, all movement is a sexual movement. There is nothing that is not sexuality moving. The entire universe is sexuality moving. When sexuality belongs to our self-experience then it is a very shallow movement. It is about your self. You are defining your self through sexual experience. Sexual experience cannot define you. But as Awareness Knowing at the heart …when movement is known from the heart, then sexuality belongs to the heart. The entire universe is a Union of Awareness-Knowing. Awareness-Knowing moves the universe..and as it moves the universe in an instant just beyond the movement, there is the Masculine and Feminine Principles that are One in Real Self and that's expressed. That union is expressed and that's the Goodness that is in the entire universe.. So anything that you do whilst you as Awareness has a body involves sexuality. Sexuality split from your heart is a distortion of your consciousness and your relationships will be distorted . It will be a about a me . Sexuality , in other words your formed life and its movement and your intimacy, aligned with what you are knowing in your heart will be the formation of the Real You in relationships. The Real You will start to form. When we are called to another in deeper intimacy it is not actually about something for the self. It's about a union of Being that then fills the heart fills the body and fills the self with what Love really is . In fact when two are moving in that way there is such a deepening and such an opening ..it really can't be mistaken ..It has nothing to do with your self! Nothing to do with your self . Because your true unions are not for your self they are for the meeting of what you really are in the Deep of You. That kind of ‘Calling’ -I am not calling it attraction, because attraction has duality in it - attraction is: 'likes and dislikes' . Calling is when your Being calls for that, that is truly deep… A Calling can be that the one you are ‘called to’ is nothing like your self would want .. When you really awaken to a Calling there is no aversion. Attraction is aversion - there will be opposites. In true Calling - although your opposites will come up, they will be met by your Union and the aversion will be transcended. When you are really called into Deeper Intimacy, your life is no longer yours as a separate sense of self to the other. Your life belongs to Truth and in the Truth your self will come up for you to meet like you have never met before ..Each meeting will be new.. Then there is a marriage in your heart, in your being in your body with the apparent other ..but now the other is disappearing, because you are meeting inside and you will see clearly and experience: There IS NO Other in the true meeting of Love .
