Golfer Thomas Detry schreef afgelopen weekend Belgische sportgeschiedenis door als eerste landgenoot een toernooi in de Amerikaanse PGA Tour te winnen. Dat circuit wordt wereldwijd gezien als het hoogste niveau in het golf. Dus mogen we Detry nu tot de absolute wereldtop rekenen? Of heeft ie nog meer in zijn mars? We vragen het aan Sporza-collega Bart Aerts, ex-golfer Christopher Mivis en Jérôme Theunis, de coach van Detry.

Twee keer per jaar trekken grote aantallen trekvogels van hun broedgebieden naar hun overwinteringsgebieden en weer terug. Tijdens hun reis verbinden ze landen, continenten én hun bewoners. Welk beeld tekent zich af als we migratie bekijken als natuurlijk fenomeen? En hoe doen trekvogels dat, zulke grote afstanden afleggen zonder een druppel fossiele brandstof? In de laatste aflevering van 2024 spreekt Anthonie over deze en andere vragen met Theunis Piersma. Theunis is hoogleraar trekvogelecologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, onderzoeker bij het Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee en founding director van Birdeyes. Hij is net terug uit Mauritanië voor enkele weken onderzoek aan wadvogels en het wad van Banc d'Arguin. Hoe is het om daar ‘onze' lepelaars, kanoeten en andere trekvogels terug te zien? En hoe ziet de wereld eruit als we die door de ogen van deze trekvogels bekijken? Theunis is openhartig over zijn rol als onderzoeker. Hij is opgeleid om alles door de wetenschappelijke bril van evolutionaire processen en natuurlijke selectie als verklaringsmodel te bekijken. Maar hij komt er steeds meer achter dat een essentieel deel van de werkelijkheid dan ontbreekt. Hoe gaat hij hiermee om? En hoe kijken zijn vakgenoten hiernaar? Verder spreken we over geopolitieke spanningen in Europa en de rol van migratie, over de afwezigheid van Nederland op het internationale toneel, de grutto als verhalenverteller en nieuwe plannen voor spannend onderzoek. The winning bid came after some chaos, as Paarl Royals and Pretoria Capitals both tried to outbid Super Kings but were forced to pull out as they didn't have much left in their purse at that point and had other spots still to fill - if they were allowed to keep bidding, they would have run out of the money needed to fill their quota of 17 players. Ferreira has played 19 T20s so far, and boasts a strike rate of 148.26 and an average of 54.85.   The Jansen brothers - Duan and Marco - were also in demand, with Marco joining Stubbs at Sunrisers for Rand 6.1 million (USD 344,000 approx.) and Duan going to MI for Rand 3.3 million (USD 186,000 approx.). Marco is already part of the Sunrisers franchise in the IPL, while Duan was recently with the Mumbai Indians development squad that toured the UK.   Kolpak-returnee Rilee Rossouw, who has played T20 cricket around the world, also hit paydirt, with Capitals forking out Rand 6.9 million (USD 389,000 approx.) for him. Wayne Parnell, another Kolpak returnee, also triggered a bidding war, which was won by Capitals too. Theunis was biting at the bit when he had the opportunity to bring on a piece of agtech that would go on to help with their operating of Macadamia farms across the East Coast of Australia. As they're dealing with investors, they want to know where there money is going so inventory is a big one for them. Also looking at how they can improve their orchards and breakdown any inconsistency. What I liked about this story specifically was the way he dealt with the employees adopting the agtech. He was able to get around the barrier by providing the tools each tractor needed to get the job done. He went and bought every one an iPad in order to utilise the products straight away and that they wouldn't see an adoption lag and then early adopters. This has brought the company together and allowed for greater transparency on and off-farm. Abstract: In this study, we report the results of a comprehensive phenotyping of the retina of the AppNL-G-F mouse. We demonstrate that soluble A{beta} accumulation is present in the retina of these mice early in life and progresses to A{beta} plaque formation by midlife. This rising A{beta} burden coincides with local microglia reactivity, astrogliosis, and abnormalities in retinal vein morphology. Electrophysiological recordings reveal signs of neuronal dysfunction yet no neurodegeneration was observed and visual performance outcomes were unaffected in the AppNL-G-F mouse. Furthermore, we show that hyperspectral imaging can be used to quantify retinal A{beta}, underscoring its potential as a biomarker for AD diagnosis and monitoring. These findings suggest that the AppNL-G-F retina mimics the early, preclinical stages of AD, and, together with retinal imaging techniques, offers unique opportunities for drug discovery and fundamental research into preclinical AD. Theunis Marinho começou a trabalhar aos 14 anos como office boy numa empresa de autopeças. Aos 50, já era presidente de uma multinacional, a Bayer Polímeros.
