Join us in the next Love Extremist Living Room and be a part of the conversation: www.extremist.love/livingroom Jacob Patterson runs Think Tank Gallery in LA, one of the most successful and widely shared art spaces in the world. In this episode Ethan and Jacob discuss how the Pandemic is shifting how we engage with art and artists, the importance of white men standing up against white supremacy, the beauty and difficulty of having a gallery in Downtown LA on Skid Row and how Jacob engages all people in his community with unconditional love and intentional attention. Jacob Patterson of Think Tank Gallery and Bobby of the Pizzaboyzzz join us as we visit the Tank at the edge of the Arts District in DTLA. The current show is Nothing Cheezy, a pizza-themed collaborative art show that acts as both a parody of the ubiquitous "selfie palaces" and, well, it's also a selfie palace. The show has been extended through mid-September and features special events pretty much every night for the price of admission. Get ready for a freewheeling discussion about street art, selfie palaces, and the often complicated relationship between the two. Plus: we announce a special auction of a pair of invitations to The College of Extraordinary Experiences, that has a shot at powering us through the end of the year. Content Advisory: strong language and sensitive subject matter. Listener discretion is advised.
We went to skid row a few weeks ago and got an exclusive tour of the Nothing Cheezy exhibit from our homies Deladeso and Anta52. They’re part of Bloody Gums, an art collective based in LA doing raw, sadistic, funny, irreverent, dope, cheezy shit and are really making a name for themselves in LA / the greater ‘(f)art’ scene. They talked to us about doing art full time, the sacrifices needed to be IG famous and the biggest goal of all: taking the white mans money. Shout out to these vatos for hosting us as well as Think Tank Gallery, PizzaBoyzzz, and the other Bloody Gums crew we encountered on our stroll.
Seasons change, time passes, friends move away... or up the street. Think Tank Gallery is moving from its home at 939 Maple, the site of many a memory for immersive LA, to a new space at the edge of the Arts District and Little Tokyo. We get together with Jacob Patterson of Think Tank in the podcast studio at the Old Tank one last time to reminisce, talk about ongoing relations with the city of LA, and what's next for Think Tank. Content Advisory: we curse. As we often do.
Think Tank Gallery impresario Jacob Patterson invites Noah over to the studio to share the scoops on Think Tank's latest projects in LA. They've got three big shows opening in the next few weeks, including the Sea-Saw residency on the Santa Monica Pier which will feature local favorites like The Guest & The Host, #Metaforyou, and Lola Kelly. Plus it's Jacob and Noah, so you know the convo gets off the rails and into some ish. Brought to you by Meow Wolf and our generous Patreon backers.
Maca rode some wild waves while Quest Nutrition jumped to the billion dollar company range, as he built one of the world's best art departments. Part of that was hiring Dino Nama, who is now Think Tank Gallery's Art Director. The two reminisce on what it took to operate on such a level, the difference of running smaller and more mobile design agencies, and break down wtf an art department even is. They also have a lot of inside jokes (just warning you). By the end of the episode we discuss what it would take to really build perfection in a design agency or art department. 7:00- Jacob obsesses over this. Srsly read it. We've mentioned the trip that manifested DS&WC at Think Tank Gallery, the show that brought our gallery back into our old venue, but we haven't discussed the process of putting it on. Hundreds of people were involved in producing this massive arts and events series, and four of them sit down after breakfast to smoke a few bowls and talk about it in this episode. If you came to the show you'll love hearing what went into it, and if you didn't you'll love hearing our host's best friends ruthlessly mocking him for a couple hours. The last big show that was thrown with the Think Tank was a confusing one, for many reasons. Firefly Productions tricked the Think Tank into producing it, the Think Tank tricked its audience into attending it (#District798), and the actors tricked guests in every way shape and form. By the end, people even thought the weed was fake while they hit it. This show was described as a "mindfuck" by the media, and it encapsulated that word in every way. Whether you caught or missed the show, or caught the show but missed huge chunks of it (we don't blame you), this interview with Steph and Steven of Firefly is a crash course on how to give a viciously original take on priorly used content. Producers will love this episode. Artists will too. We're back! It's been a while since A.R.T. has posted an episode of our podcast, and a lot has happened in the interim. If you read between the lines (or read the "farewell letter" we published online after the LA Weekly story last year), then you know a bit of what happened, but our host Jacob Patterson takes a moment in this episode to break down what happened and where we're at because of it. If you don't give a damn and want to hear inspiring creators talk about how they're changing the world, skip this one and head over to the first full episode of Season 2 with the CEO of Meow Wolf. 0:18- What has happened to Artists Real Talk? Get ready for some brain-twisty-ness on the latest episode. First: we have Lin Bo, of China's dissident Xiong Collective joining us for a hot second at Think Tank Gallery where he is hanging their new collaboration 'District 798.' Lin Bo is the subject of the show 'Caught,' which is also making its bow at Think Tank. How does that work? We have no idea. Then it's time for one of THOSE episodes, as we sit down with Derek Spencer of Ceaseless Fun (and the League of Experiential and Immersive Artists) to talk about... well, everything. Plus a short rant about Gothamist shutting down, word on the Immersive Design Summit, and strange interruptions galore. This one really is like hanging out with us.
Oh, do we have a multi-layered episode for you today. First, we turn to Jacob Patterson of Think Tank Gallery, as we drop in on the night of their media preview for their next big show Drinkin', Smokin', West Coastin'. Then we unlock the No Pro time machine (Where do you think all that Patreon money goes to?) to enter the world of Nocturnal Fandango before The Sudden Loneliness Gift disrupted their dreams and plans. That's where we find Jason and Kevin Davidson, the couple at the heart of that company, weeks after Have You Seen Jake? ended, before a tragic fire--an uncanny echo of stories past--took Kevin away from Jason. All that, and Noah shares his tale of a Technodelic experience. Wait, what?
This week we had the opportunity to talk to Think Tank Gallery founder and A.R.T. Podcast host Jacob Patterson this week about building DIY art spaces, the world of sneakerheads, and how he accidentally made two videos go viral in the early days of YouTube.
We really want to experiment with the format of this conversational show, and this week our co-host Jacob Patterson sits down for a conversation with two team members. Art Director Dino Nama and Real Talk Research Assistant Madelyn Flores listed a bunch of questions they put together after listening to prior shows and looking over some Think Tank exhibits. Patterson does a hell of a job stumbling through them and only answers like 5% of them in an hour... we also provide a little context for who Think Tank is and where we currently stand in the scheme of things. Noah started NoPro when he decided that he wanted to find out more about the world of Immersive, and found there was no newsletter to follow. Years later he runs the definitive Guide to Immersive Entertainment in newsletter and deep-dive, long-form podcast format. He also records his show in our studio. We talk about the Ghost Ship fire, the world-changing Tension Experience, the fertile grounds for creation in LA, what Immersive Theatre is and how the term is abused, Think Tank's Trap House show, the paradigm-shifting advancements in VR, and the most important things that have happened in these worlds. If you don't know what Immersive is, you're in for a major lesson on what is in theory the most impacting art form in the world. Shelley Holcomb may be the best person to listen to if you’re deciding what to do with your time. For her day job she helps run the SCI-Arc brand and public program, and spends the rest of her time curating a sex show (Whits n Giggles), creating her own art and experiences for places like MOCA, and running the definitive voice in event curation across Los Angeles (Curate LA).
