Mark and Kenny begin Season Seven: Defending the Crown with a detailed discussion of Madonna's most politically urgent (and last - for now!) film project, in collaboration with Steven Klein as well as the debut of a now oft-covered Elliott Smith song. Topics include channeling the source and upping security, Instagram, VICE and BitTorrent, cutting edge lingerie, Danny Tull, troublesome rollouts and surprise drops, the illusions of the mid-2010s, the Daddy Syndrome, Jean-Luc Goddard, The Night Porter, David Lynch's influences, rebirth and performance, Anne Sexton, Ariana Grande, the Gagosian Gallery, Rocco Ritchie, Anderson Cooper and the GLAAD Awards, the importance of props, Amnesty International, Pussy Riot and the continuing struggle and fight to protect human rights and the freedom of speech - globally. Madonna's in the kitchen getting dragged across the floor and getting sued for one million dollars! Thank you - as always - for listening. We are so excited to be resuming our conversations with each and every one of you. It's a Revolution of Love!

Another week, another German philosopher. This time, Steven Klein joins us to discuss the ideas and legacy of one Jürgen Habermas. We talk about his evolution alongside and away from the Frankfurt School, the enlightenment project at the core of his work, and why a critical theory born in crisis is a different animal than a critical theory born under conditions of relative capitalist stability. Love him or not, we can't deny that Habermas is a giant of modern European philosophy. Shout out to the Habermaniacs. leftofphilosophy.com | stevenmklein.comReferences:Jürgen Habermas, “The Public Sphere: An Encyclopedia Article,” trans. Isamaya Ffrench's eponymous beauty brand ISAMAYA is very new - two years! But what an impact it's made. Shocking us with her lipsticks in penis-inspired packaging (a sentence I never thought I would write!) and her Steven Klein campaigns, her brand of cosmetics has landed - as she says - “exactly where I wanted it to land”. But juggling it alongside her day job - creating campaigns and catwalk looks for some of the most influential global stars in the fashion and music industry, from Balmain, Giambattista Valli, Vivienne Westwood as well as contributing to international magazines like Vogue, Dazed, and Beauty Papers, recently took its toll. When she experienced one too many burnouts, Isamaya finally learnt that she's the only person who can improve her own life quality. And so that's just what she did. We expect LED lamps to act like incandescent lamps, but they don't. Why is that, and what do we need to consider to make LED light beautiful? From flicker, to burn out, to the color just seeming “off,” there are reasons why consumers run into issues and report dissatisfaction with their LED light bulbs. Don Peifer joins Raelle and Liz, taking us through the key points to consider as we switch from a hot glowing wire (tungsten) to the glowing computer that is an LED. Show notes Don began his career in lighting as a designer for film and fashion. He designed the lighting for Annie Leibovitz, Steven Klein and a variety of award-winning cinematographers. He received his Masters of Architectural Sciences in Lighting from the Lighting Research Center at RPI. He designed the lighting for the Nike Media Store in NYC. In 2007, he founded Lunera Lighting, a venture-backed start-up, which provided lighting for the fleet of Apple Stores and scores of Fortune 500 companies. He has worked with many of the industry leading manufacturers including Acuity Brands Lighting, where he was the VP of Innovation and Legrand, where he held the position of Creative Director for the Lighting Sector. He is currently the founder of Smash the Bulb, a luminaire manufacturer that uses alternative manufacturing techniques, circular design and sustainable materials to address issues with the current paradigm of lighting. In February, 2022, Smash the bulb was awarded one of 4 L-Prizes by the Department of Energy. Don has lots of great information. We put together a glossary to help out. His latest collection being shown at Paris Fashion Week is inspired by his father's job as a refuse collector.

The Work of Politics: Making a Democratic Welfare State (Cambridge University Press 2020) advances a new understanding of how democratic social movements work with welfare institutions to challenge structures of domination. Steven Klein develops a novel theory that depicts welfare institutions as “worldly mediators,” or sites of democratic world-making fostering political empowerment and participation within the context of capitalist economic forces. Drawing on the writings of Weber, Arendt, and Habermas, and historical episodes that range from the workers' movement in Bismarck's Germany to post-war Swedish feminism, the book challenges us to rethink the distribution of power in society, as well as the fundamental concerns of democratic theory. Ranging across political theory and intellectual history, The Work of Politics provides a vital contribution to contemporary thinking about the future of the welfare state. Tejas Parasher is Junior Research Fellow in Political Thought and Intellectual History at King's College, University of Cambridge.

You might find Phyllis Posnick in the West Village in New York City at her mainstay eatery Via Carota, or at a book signing of her best seller STOPPERS to fashion enthusiasts. She may be spotted in New York, London, Milan and Paris for Fashion Week, or Upstate New York with Steven Klein removing "Real Doll” faces for a Vogue shoot illustrating excessive cosmetic treatments. More often, Phyllis is meeting with photographers discussing new projects.Phyllis gives listeners an inside peak of what it’s really like being a fashion editor at Vogue, from asking Nicolas Ghesquière to make a Queen Elizabeth I gown to be worn by Cate Blanchett for a Mr. Penn sitting, or managing the logistics of flying bees from Colorado to New York for a shoot. After 30 years at Anna Wintour’s Vogue, working with the best photographers (Irving Penn, Steven Klein, Tim Walker, Annie Leibowitz and Anton Corbijn) she still has something to prove, because in fashion "you’re only as good as your last shoot".

W Magazine excerpt about Eileen: "The New York aesthetician Eileen Harcourt spends her days hopping from TriBeCa lofts to Upper East Side penthouses to Hamptons manses, treating a roster of VIP clients that includes Adriana Lima, Lauren Hutton, and Daphne Guinness. A fashion-world favorite, she can often be spotted prepping skin backstage at runway shows and treating models on set for the photographer Steven Klein. She also sees clients at her Upper West Side studio, where, happily, mere mortals are welcome." (eharcourts.com) Featured Guest on Episode Fifteen Eileen Harcourt earned her fashion degree in Boston, and her aesthetic license in cosmetology in New York City. Shortly afterwards she went to Paris and studied with world renowned Jacques Courtin Clarins (CLARINS), the founder and chairman of the Clarins Groupe, a French company that produces luxury skin-care products and makeup made primarily from plant extracts, and with Decleor. After her studies, she founded her own skin care salon in Soho in 1985. She developed the revolutionary use of calming, uplifting oils while administering facials to the stars, and ultimately blended them into a “tranquility” candle for the home. After the success of her product line, she began selling her products wholesale (clients include Club Monaco, Viacom, Lauren Hutton, and many more). In September of 2000 she founded her unique, sensorial shop which included her original candles, soaps and personalized aesthetic services on Mott Street in NYC. She taught classes at the learning Annex on creating your own products, and branched out into television with episodes such as “The Beauty Authority” on Lust for Looks, a men's network fashion program. Eileen has been featured in Vogue (US, Italy, Japan, Mexico), InStyle Magazine, Style.com, Allure, Marie Claire, W, and more. She subsequently developed “pop up” shops in Cherry Valley, New York in the spirit of her original New York City location. In 2005 Eileen pioneered “backstage skin care,” made even more popular by the feature interview with Style.com. Eileen is well-known as a pioneer aesthetician. During her prolific career serving the fashion and entertainment elite, her mission with her products and services is to reveal the light that comes from within. The insane life of Dianne Brill began in Wisconsin, then London in her early twenties, and by some fluke of a visa problem New York City got her, thank God. By 1985 she was featured in the New York Times as the reigning queen of NYC parties. Andy Warhol famously said of Dianne, if you were at a party and Dianne Brill was there, you knew you were at the right party. Her supersonic beauty, skintight rubber fashion, and club appearances drove the paparazzi insane and made her officially known as the queen of the night. She was at the top of what became known as the Fab 500, literally the 500 coolest people that were on any New York city guest list in the 1980s. We're talking Iggy Pop, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Klein, Debbie Harry, Mario Testino. And of course Andy Warhol. She was married to Rudolf Pieper the owner of the legendary club, Danceteria where her legendary status was cemented. Everywhere Dianne went she was adored and always made a statement. She’s acted in films like iconic downtown NYC film, Slaves of New York, and For Love or Money with Michael J. Fox. She wrote a book, “Boobs, Boys and High Heels or How to Get Dressed in Just Under Six Hours.” She started a clothing line and she was dressing Duran Duran and Prince, walking in runway shows for Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood. She even has a mannequin created after her figure…She started her own cosmetics line, Dianne Brill Cosmetics, and now she is on Instagram and YouTube with her channel, The Brill of it All. Dianne Brill was truly way ahead of the curve for being famous for being fabulous, way before social media likes followers and the notion that people are just famous for no discernible reason. The thing about Dianne is she's famous because she created a sensation, a fury, she represented what it meant to be everywhere at all times a sensation, and anyone that watched her walk across the room. We had such an amazing time going down memory lane and celebrating her incredible and illustrious life. And don’t forget to wish our Aries queen a Happy Birthday today! When Lady Gaga’s makeup is mentioned, the one name that comes to mind is Sarah Tanno. As her official make-up artist, Sarah accompanies Gaga on every single tour and does her make-up for every single show, red carpet event and magazine shoot. Their work together led to many collaborations with global brands like Marc Jacobs Beauty, and In 2019, Sarah was named the global artistry director of Haus Labs.Sarah Tanno is the self described ultimate rule-breaker, so naturally Lady Gaga recruited her to be apart of the exclusive Haus of Gaga. She’s the conceptual brain behind Gaga’s Countess in American Horror Story – it was a task which awarded her the 2016 Creative Arts Emmy, as well as Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award.Along with Gaga, her loyal client base includes Gigi Hadid, Dakota Johnson, Suki Waterhouse, priyanka chopra and Hailey Beiber. She has worked with leading photographers Steven Klein, Karl Lagerfeld, Inez & Vinoodh, and Paolo Roversi to named more. The last big show that was thrown with the Think Tank was a confusing one, for many reasons. Firefly Productions tricked the Think Tank into producing it, the Think Tank tricked its audience into attending it (#District798), and the actors tricked guests in every way shape and form. By the end, people even thought the weed was fake while they hit it. This show was described as a "mindfuck" by the media, and it encapsulated that word in every way. Whether you caught or missed the show, or caught the show but missed huge chunks of it (we don't blame you), this interview with Steph and Steven of Firefly is a crash course on how to give a viciously original take on priorly used content. Producers will love this episode. Artists will too. This week’s guests on Radio Cherry Bombe are Victoria Granof, Kerry Diamond & Claudia Wu. Today’s program was brought to you by The International Culinary Center. Victoria Granof Classically trained at the famed Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Victoria Granof worked as a cooking instructor, chef, and pastry chef at restaurants in her hometown of Los Angeles before moving into photography. Victoria has been commissioned for editorial shoots and ad campaigns for clients ranging from Bon Appétit to Kraft, Nestle, Absolut, KitchenAid, and Clinique. She has worked with many of the photo world’s best-known image-makers, launching her career with a decade-long collaboration with the great Irving Penn and later teaming up with Kenji Tomo, Mitchell Feinberg, Hans Gissinger, and Steven Klein, among others. In addition to still images, her portfolio features video, including a number of short, striking motion pieces (a melting popsicle, a sizzling egg, a deconstructed still life) created with Craig Cutler for his “CC52” series of personal work. “I’m excited about things I’ve never seen before. If I see one more heirloom tomato on a rustic table I’m going to scream. Show me something that changes the way I see things.” [04:00] –Victoria Granof on Radio Cherry Bombe Kerry Diamond & Claudia Wu. Kerry Diamond and Claudia Wu are the co-founders of Cherry Bombe Magazine. Kerry is also the co-owner of Brooklyn eateries Wilma Jean and Nightingale 9, and the Carroll Gardens’ coffee shop Smith Canteen. Claudia has her own graphic design firm and sometimes publishes Me Magazine. Cherry Bombe is a beautifully designed biannual magazine that celebrates women and food—those who grow it, make it, serve it, style it, enjoy it and everything in between. It is about sustenance and style and things that nourish the mind, the eye and, of course, the stomach. Our readers, subjects and contributors are passionate about food, aesthetics and the world around them. Cherry Bombe is available at select bookstores, magazine shops and boutiques and by subscription. “I think a lot of journalists and subjects these days take for granted things can be changed any moment if things are incorrect in a story. In print, when it’s out – it’s done. There’s no changing information that’s already out there.” [33:00] –Kerry Diamond on Radio Cherry Bombe
Industry Leaders from the world of Beauty & Fashion providing thought provoking insights from Inspiring minds. Guests are interviewed on their experiences in both Fashion and Beauty and offer the Beauty Fashion and War audience guidance, wisdom and candor. EP 33: Victoria Hunter (the Thunder from Down Under) and Larry Raspanti, deliver a profound talk on what it takes to run a successful Hair Salon in the Jungle known as New York City. Equipped with over 40 years of combined expertise, these 2 Entrepreneurs share their Social Media Strategies and how Bob Marley was a True Rasta-Man! What does it take to make a positive impact in the world of Beauty and Fashion? Join us as Victoria Hunter and Larry Raspanti shares their Entrepreneurial mindset and an inside glance at their journey to becoming successful Entrepreneurs in the world of Beauty, Fashion and War! [shadowbox] It’s my pleasure to introduce 2 seasoned professionals in the world of Hair Styling, Color, Hair Painting and Entrepreneurship. Their New York City based Salon, ‘The Whittemore-House’ has been featured in almost every major metropolitan magazine to include Time, NY Daily News, Elle, Salon Today, Allure and GQ to name a few. [/shadowbox] Victoria Hunter - Bio Victoria Hunter approaches hair color with the discerning eye of a fine artist. As a pioneer of the “hair painting” genre, Hunter studies every head of hair like a 3 Dimensional canvas – intuitively deciding where to place the perfect pop of auburn or unexpected streak of dusty lavender. While in Hunter’s chair, no creative vision is off limits; over the course of her career, she has made a name for herself as the gold standard of hair color for countless models, cool girls, editors, stylists and celebrities and has become the go-to colorist for famed stylist Guido Palau. A native of Queensland, Australia, Hunter honed her skills in Melbourne, London and Hong Kong before arriving in New York to serve as the color director of Bumble and bumble. In 2007, she achieved widespread recognition for her innovative hair painting method as the first ever recipient of the Hair and Beauty Award at the Colour Secrets Gala in Frankfurt. Two years later, Hunter left Bumble and bumble to open Whittemore House Salon with partner Larry Raspanti. Located in the bucolic setting of a tree-lined street in the West Village, Whittemore House Salon serves as a hub for in-the-know New Yorkers (and beyond). On an average day at Whittemore, one might witness Hunter creating an army of muted pastel wigs for the recent Marc Jacobs Fall 2014 fashion show while simultaneously transforming the model of the moment. Over the course of her career, Hunter has collaborated with some of the most iconic photographers of our time, including Steven Klein, Steven Meisel, Ellen von Unwerth, Mert and Marcus, Inez and Vinoodh, David LaChapelle, and David Sims. Her work has been featured in countless editorials, including American Vogue, Italian Vogue, Numero, ELLE, W, i-D and Interview magazines, to name a few. As one of the most in-demand visionaries in the fashion industry, she has created looks for a laundry list of iconic advertising campaigns, from Dolce & Gabbana to Lanvin to Alexander McQueen. Most recently, Hunter’s work can be seen in campaigns for Prada, Lanvin, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs. This past spring, she teamed up with Steven Meisel to create three cover stories for Italian Vogue. Hunter maintains an ardent passion for her signature hair painting method and continues to lead master classes on the technique around the world, including her main hub of Whittemore House Salon in New York. She believes there is no one “rule” to creating the perfect color, and instead works with stylists to develop an eye for color and tone, texture and style. As a result, the signature of Whittemore House—and of Hunter—is a bespoke look that is at once as effortless and seamless as it is unique. Larry Raspanti - Bio Larry Raspanti has always questioned traditional assumptions about hair and the application of color, which led him to the art of hair painting. Over the years, Larry has developed this modern way of coloring hair, bringing it from its infancy to the elevated craft it is today. He is an authority on men’s fashion and grooming, and is often backstage at fashion events and runways shows. As a result Larry has traveled the world extensively. He approaches hair with the perspective of an architect, deconstructing its three dimensionality, which he expresses both in cut and color. His inherent design capabilities have influenced his highly intuitive cutting techniques. A natural entrepreneur, he opened Whittemore House with Victoria Hunter in 2009. Everyone Wants to Have Better Sex with Curvy Girl Chrystal Bougon
www.radicalista.com has an article "Cougaritis: Beware, Slippery When Wet!" The recently-coined term "Cougar" firmly attached itself to me after I appeared in a slinky gold bathing suit, seated alongside a 20 something hunk for a Dolce & Gabbana ad in the December, 2008 issues of VOGUE, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair and W. I was curious as to why they would feature me in that suit (I had purchased it from eBay) as it wasn't from their collection. The answer came as a revelation...they're selling alternate life styles, not clothing! So, naturally the photographer, Steven Klein choreographed that Cougar/Cub scenario...and I was off at the races! People still stop me on the street with, "Oh, you're that Cougar from Dolce & Gabbana" and yes, I am! Tune in to Better Sex Radio to hear all about Cougars and Hattie the original cougar!
